This started off promisingly with an interesting premise and I thought it sounded fantastic when I read the synopsis but sadly it tailed off about 1/3 of the way through the book and lost both focus and momentum.
Our protagonist is a hustler, an arsonist for hire, who has memories of 2 previous lives, in one of which he died in a fire. To begin with, this seems off to me. If you burn to death in one life I find it hard to believe you’re likely to become a pyromaniac in the next - surely a fireman would be more logical? But I digress!
Hiding from the police, Evan meets the beautiful and mysterious Poppy and through her is introduced to the intriguing group of Reincarnationists, a select and hedonistic group who have also lived multiple lives.
One of the biggest problems with this book is that there is no moral centre. Everyone is amoral and selfish in their own way. There are lots of sections which add nothing other than an excuse for visiting a time period and they add no depth. All of the characters are two-dimensional.
I’m quite surprised that this is being made into a film as there isn’t that much plot.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review of the novel.
An entertaining and engrossing story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Good storytelling and world building, a fascinating cast of characters.
I can't wait to read the next installment in this series.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review and here it is...I loved It! It’s a tale old as time, reincarnation, we have dreamed of it for generations, that isn’t a new idea but the idea of a society of reincarnationists is fascinating and almost fantastical in the “I can live forever” way it is put across.
As always, things don’t go to plan but the journey through book 1, whilst fairly predictable is an enjoying, page turning rollercoaster that finishes just as you want more...I cannot wait for book 2!
Probably a 3.,5 star for me. Evan Michaels is different but doesn't know exactly how or why. All he knows is he remembers other lives. That is until an unfortunate incident leads him to meet a Woman by the name of Poppy, who eventually introduces him to the people and world of the Cognomina. From here he relives past lives of his own and other members of this illustrious society. From here he ventures forth to find who he was and who he will become.
Have you ever had the feeling you have been somewhere before, that you have met someone before you were introduced to them? Evan Michaels has struggled with having the memories of two other people his entire life and believes he is alone in the world with this bizarre condition until he meets Poppy, a woman who recalls seven different lives. It turns out that there is a society of people with the same condition, they call themselves the Cogomina. The organization is highly secretive, it’s members amassing a wealth of knowledge leading to almost immeasurable power. Can these people help Evan, or will they turn his already bizarre life into a living nightmare
