What a beautiful book for budding readers and writers! The lyrical work in this story is nothing short of magical for a young reader. Reminiscent of EE Cummings fanciful placement of words that capitalizes on the artistry of word shaping in poetry as well as content. I loved the idea that the words of poems are emerging like leaves on a tree, each page showing the work it takes to create a beautiful piece of writing. The illustrations in the book show an emerging story across a windy landscape, the detailed and dynamic art featured merit taking time to discover all the hidden gems, silly puns, and rhyming pairs. I love that this book provides ample opportunities to make reading an engaging learning experience and could be easily adapted to include supplementary materials with this book in the future. Thanks for the opportunity to read this lovely book! I will definitely be grabbing a copy when it becomes available.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review, thanks NetGalley and Kids Can Press!
Silly, with lots of puns. It was cute enough. A poem goes whirling away and the words jumble and then it becomes something new. The story isn’t the strength, the playing no with words is the focus.
This would be one to either read 1:1 with a kid at home who can have the time to find and talk about all the little words scattered around the pages.. or make the time/ accept that you’re skipping a lot of those for the sake of time during a read aloud in the classroom.
It’s a good one for exactly what it says, poem in your pocket day or to start the celebration of Poetry Month.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is a beautifully illustrated, fun look at how made and can be a part of our everyday life. I love the personification of words and poems, that they are living entities that can take on a life of their own, be blown around in the wind, splash in the puddles and grow into something bigger! I could definitely see myself using this with a younger group in school as an introduction to poetry.
This was a short and sweet book about the creative process and finding how we all can find our creative selves along the way.
Such an interesting way to get children to be creative! A must read.
As a mom and former preschool teacher, I think this story would be a great way to introduce poetry and rhyme to a young child. The illustrations are captivating and will definitely help hold a young child’s attention. I really liked the flow of the story and how there were little puns/wordplays to make it fun.
My only criticism is that there were a few pages that seemed to just focus on the puns/wordplays without having the story continue. I am not sure if that is how the book in intended or if that is just the way the download worked out.
Overall, I would purchase this book for my children to help with rhyming and for a beginning lesson in poetry.
This book uses language in the most brilliant ways! It is a fun read for kids and adults alike and has beautiful illustrations. I will be recommending this one to all of my speech therapist and special education friends!
Poem in My Pocket by Chris Tougas is a fun and wonderfully illustrated story about a girl trying to find her lost poem. She goes on a creative journey to find her poem, encountering many words and silly puns along the way. I loved this creative book and its gorgeous illustrations. This will help children see the beauty in words and may inspire them to write their own poems!
Thank you Kids Can Press and NetGalley for providing this ARC.
This book is a fun tool to use to introduce young people to poetry. Filled with colourful images and accessible words and activity. I would use for a storytime or quiet poetry month activity.
I absolutely adored this book! The rhymes were great, the language accessible for all ages. It is truly a book for all ages. From what I found while reading to my young family, a toddler (2 or 3 years old) will love finding the letters hiding around the page; a young child (4-6 years old) will love figuring out the rhymes; an older child (7-10 years old) will enjoy reading it and finding the rhythm of the poetry; and an adult (and kind of the older children) will love the puns hidden in the pages. This is what I call creativity and a fantastic read! It is truly a book for the whole family and I very much recommend it! This is definitely going to be a book I buy for my family and others when published!!
Without a doubt, 5/5 stars!
The reader will engage with the text and probably be inspired to create some poems for their pockets.
Poem in My Pocket, by Chris Tougas and illustrated by Josée Bisaillon, is a charming and fun picture book for young readers, exploring language and the creative writing process. The playful rhyming language of the text is well-matched by the whimsical art, which includes visual wordplay as well, with cute details like bees shaped like b-eautiful Bs, and written words spilling out of pockets, flying on the breeze, and melting away into puddles. The final image is a beautiful poetic pun, adorably wrapping up a book that will surely make a delightful story-time readaloud with kids who love playing with language!
Thank you to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for the advance review copy!
A wonderful poetry adventure with each page bursting with a riot of colour, wonderful illustrations and tremendous word play. The book succeeds in making words fun and will break down barriers to writing poetry which will make it an absolutely perfect resource for teachers and parents/carers it had me so excited and looking forward to carrying a poem in my pocket.
Enormous thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an afternoon of wondeful word play.
For some of us, poetry feels cryptic. We remember back to English class where we toiled over finding the hidden metaphors and themes, only to lose sight of the playfulness of language. What if we could be comfortable with poetry? Find companionship in its rolling rhythm and peace in its rich vocabulary?
That's the kind of relationship I want my children to have with poetry. I want them to come to a poem as they would come to an old friend, with the expectation of understanding and being understood. That's why books like Poem in My Pocket are so important. Children need poetry books that meet them where they're at. Poetry books that will grow in their heart and minds from a young age, inviting them into language instead of threatening them with hidden meanings.
Poem in My Pocket does just that. This rollicking adventure features a little girl whose pocket rips and out spills a poem. Written in simple rhyme scheme, the poem floats throughout the town, ever just out of reach. And the illustrations are just as whimsical as the rhyme, with words written into motion, sometimes jumbled and mixed up in the adventure as well. And besides the poem, the author has also included extension activities, further engaging the reader in language play.
I'm a huge proponent of getting kids comfortable with poetry at a young age. This playful book does just that through language and illustrations. This is a fun book to play with puns, suffixes, and so much more. Cute story and great way to introduce the fun that can be had with poetry.
*Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I really love the artwork of this book and think that the plot went along well with it. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to my students especially during my poetry unit.
"Rhyming, fanciful allegory of the creative writing process."
A little girl's poem tumbles out of her ripped pocket and her word adventure begins. As she scrambles to retrieve them she finds they join up with other words haphazardly and create funny and imaginative possibilities when they land.
She finally scoops up the word salad and tries to bring meaning back into her poem once more. Oh no...... she loses them again to a rushing wind which releases them onto muddy ground where they plant themselves deep into the earth. To her astonishment and pure delight her words are resurrected as a magical Poet-Tree. Who knew?
The illustrations enrich the storyline greatly and visually celebrate the love of poetry. It highlights the playfulness of language and how fun it can be. This book is perfect to kick off National Poetry Month and to share on Poem in Your Pocket Day. It is a book that both the young and the old will appreciate. I highly recommend this book.
In this book, a girl’s poem, slips out of her ripped pocket and a wonderful adventure ensues. Wind whirls and twirls her carefully crafted words along the streets of the town. As she attempts to recapture the words, rhymes and puns form in unsuspecting places. “Will you meow-y me?” What a mix-up! How will she ever be able to put her poem together again?
There is so much detail in the illustrations that this is one of those books that you’ll read repeatedly getting something different out of it each time. You can spend a whole read aloud just discussing one page. This is a great book for April’s National Poetry Month or any day that you want to celebrate the power of words. Don’t forget to have you poem ready for National Poem in Your Pocket Day!
Perfect way for parents and people just interested in poetry to promote the process..
Brightly colored illustrations pull readers into the story, climaxing with a glorious groan-worthy pun.
As refreshing and relaxing as a trip to the islands.
A cute book for national poem in my pocket day (who knew that was a thing? I feel like I've been missing out my whole life.)
I loved the rhyme scheme and the illustrations were adorable. I feel like this book would be a really great addition to any classroom ages 5 and up, and teachers could make up lesson plans on this book and the event alone.
A colorful adventure of poems. It encourages to look at words and how they can be used. A celebration of words!
A special thank you to Kids Can Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review
A delightful story about a boy whose poems in his pocket fall out, and the words get mixed up... to create new poems!
