A super cute story about Sloth and Squirrel, two very different friends who want to buy a bike. They try to get a job but realize they have very different strengths and abilities. The art is very cute and I liked the message of everyone being able to contribute in their own way--either through hard work, reliability or great ideas. A cute story about friendship that also helps introduce terms like jobs and profit. Sweet twist at the end, too.

This is a fun read. The characters are quirky and enjoyable. It shows kids that we may be (and work) differently, but team work and some understanding of others helps us all do good things.

Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle. By Cathy Ballou Mealey, Illustrator: Kelly Collier. 2021. Kids Can Press (ARC eBook).

Squirrel and Sloth find themselves in a pickle when they try to earn money to buy a bike. A very cute story with two friends who are opposites (fast and slow) but working together, gain responsibility and succeed with an innovated idea. The illustrations are adorable.

Differences can make good friends. A speedy squirrel is best friends with a slow sloth. When they see two friends ride by on a bicycle built for two, squirrel decides that is what they need, but they will have to make money. They get a job at a pickle place, bottling and labeling jars of pickles. Well, that doesn't go well and they have some problems. They don't make a lot of money, but get paid in a different way. Using their brains, they turn what could have been a bad situation into their new bike. Such a fun story about friendship and problem solving. The illustrations by Kelly Collier were wonderful. They were large, active and so funny. My granddaughter and I loved this book. She laughed and laughed, especially at Sloth's activities. This is definitely a keeper.

I love sloths! Here are my pros and cons for Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle:

Pros
1. Seriously… is it even possible to dislike a book that features a sloth? I don’t think so! 😊
2. This is a super cute book that pits the speediness of a squirrel against the leisurely pace of a sloth. The antics are fun!
3. I hope you like pickles… because there are a LOT of them in this book!
4. There are actually a few learning moments in the story, including being responsible, coming up with creative solutions to problems, and being happy with what you have.
5. The illustrations, by Kelly Collier, are exciting and fun.

Cons
None.

Summary
This is an entertaining story that children will enjoy… and they might just learn a little lesson from it, too! It doesn’t get any better than that!

Thank you NetGalley and Kids Can Press for a free eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Such an odd collection of elements mixed together it was bound to be either absolutely weird or the most fun. The base plot is pretty standard - sloth an squirrel want money for something so they get a job that goes poorly due to the peculiarities inherent in their species. They learn to use their strengths and approach the trouble from a new angle. The illustrations alone make this worth a read, especially if you're a fan of the offbeat.

I loved everything about this book. The illustrations are so much fun. They remind me of Curious George. Then Sloth is slow but his ultra fast friend Squirrel is a perfect companion. They are the exact opposite but they hit off each other better than Abbot and Castello.

This was a sweet and silly book that made my son giggle the whole way through. The illustrations were delightful and the story itself was fun and amusing and it will definitely be a book that gets worked into our rotation of bedtime stories.

Squirrel wants to buy a bike and because it is expensive, Sloth is willing to help out and earn some of the money to purchase it. While squirrel is energetic and efficient, Sloth is not. Nevertheless, it is Sloth's latest idea that ends up being the money winner.

Sloth and squirrel make an unlikely duo. Their story show persistence, creativity, and loyalty. When sloth and squirrel decide to try to make money to buy their own bicycle, Manager Peacock gives them a job packing pickles. Things get a little out of hand until the two decide to focus on their strengths. They package a whole lot more jars, but sloth's sleepy habits cause all of the labels to be applied upside down. What will the two friends do next? Read the book and find out. Love the adorable details like Manager Peacock's pickle-themed office and the little turtle who offers to race sloth and squirrel down the hill on their bike. A new picture book that will be a popular read aloud.

Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle by Cathy Ballou Mealey is the sweetest picture book for kids. With adorable illustrations and a fun story line, this is the perfect read aloud book. My son laughed frequently at the crazy antics of the squirrel and sloth to achieve their goal. I think this book is perfect for lower elementary children. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.

"Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle" is a neat story about two friends wanting to buy a bike. I thought it was a fun idea to have them jarring pickles, but the story felt a bit rushed. I also wondered how they mysteriously had 700+ sticks for the pops. Perhaps a second fun idea could be put in to help with this second aspect? The Peacock as a manager is hilarious as well, I wish he had made a longer appearance in the story. Overall very cute.

Sloth and Squirrel are good friends who want a bike but they don't have enough money. When Sloth sees a help-wanted sign, he and Squirrel get jobs as pickle packers. Extreme cuteness ensues. Squirrel is really, really fast, but Sloth is well...just not. Can these 2 friends find a way to earn enough money for their bike? Find out as you read this fun book full of adorable illustrations.

Such a cute and playful book. Unlikely pair, Sloth and Squirrel get decide to get jobs packing pickles in order to buy a bike, and that's just the beginning of this alternative adventure of the two. This one got lots of laughs from my first graders.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Sloth and Squirrel want a new bike but they are expensive so they get a job, but jobs are hard. Together the two friends put their heads together to problem solve and get themselves a bike. Loved this one.

Sloth and Squirrel are in a bit of a pickle. 677.5 jars of pickles, to be exact.

They decide to work as pickle packers to earn the money to buy the bike they want but things don’t quite go to plan. Teamwork can be a bit tricky when one member of your team is super speedy and the other is s-l-o-w.

This is a cute picture book with two very different friends. This story shows our new friends working together towards a common goal, using initiative and thinking outside the box to solve a problem.

The illustrations highlight how fast Squirrel is, how slow Sloth is and how expressive both friends are.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read this book.
