Received and ARC copy to review for Netgalley. Read this book with my 4 year old and he really liked it. The illustrations were cute and the story was funny. It was nice to see the message of team work and ingenuity between Sloth and Squirrel, and it was a cute story! Would definitely recommend!
Thank you NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love this cover!
My kids and I are OBSESSED with sloths to say the least, so I was SOOO excited to see this as an option. Fun read for my 7 year old. I giggled a little myself!
Overall, I'd definitely read more books by this author.
Squirrel and Sloth are BFFs. One day when they are hanging out in a tree together they see a tandem bike whizz by. Squirrel gets excited and decides he wants a bike like that so he and his friend can zoom FAST! Off they go to the store to find out the possibility of obtaining one. When they reach the store squirrel's tail droops as he discovers that bikes cost a lot of money... money that they don't have.
Does that stop the two? Absolutely not! They decide to get a job so they can earn money to purchase their dream bike and they spot a sign that might just might be the answer to their problem.
"HELP
WANTED
PICKLE PACKERS"
Yes!
After an interview they hesitantly are offered the job by a crusty looking peacock manager. Oh oh! Pickle packing takes speed and skill and the job doesn't go too well for the two. They discover the pickles are slippery, the jars are slippery and the floor gets slippery quickly! By noon Sloth and Squirrel had packed only six jars. Oh my! The manager truly isn't happy but grants them one more day of employment after he is assured they can do much better.
What does one do when you can't pickle pack to perfection and you find you yourself in a pickle? Well.... you take those pickles and create a job that you will relish. Using problem-solving, teamwork, ingenuity and creativity the two friends finally manage to reach their monetary goal and their dream bike becomes a reality. Success!
The illustrations are playful, expressive and fun. The characters are adorable and the message is very relatable and positive. The author ends the story with a surprise twist that kids and adults will love. I highly recommend this book.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle is such a funny story about an unlikely friendship between a sloth and a squirrel which made me laugh out loud all the way through the story.
The author has done a fantastic job with the humour in this book and I loved how she turned a negative into a positive situation in the story.
Squirrel wants a bike and signs him and Sloth up for jobs at a pickle packing place. Squirrel is super fast but sloth (in typical sloth style) is slow, sluggish and sleepy and their pickle packing doesn't exactly go to plan!
Super-slow sloth and super-flighty squirrel need to earn money to buy a bike. Reluctantly, the owner of the pickle-packing store gives them a job. Pickle-packing turns out to be harder than it looks and they get fired. As they are drowning their sorrows in popsicles, Sloth accidentally invents a new snack that brings them the funds they need for a bike.
Cute story about working to reach your goals, failing, and finding a way to try again. I loved the illustrations, and the characters. This will be a great addition to an elementary library collection, and I would recommend to readers who are ready to move up a step from Mo Willem's Elephant and Piggie and books.
Sloth and squirrel are unexpected friends, After seeing other forest creatures riding a bike, squirrel decides that they also need a bike. When they realize that bikes are expensive, they both find a job packing pickles. Will they make enough money to buy the bike?
Easy to read and engaging for young listeners. Wonderful illustrations paired with amusing, delightful text make this a book that I would share with students and families. Highly recommended.
I love Sloth and Squirrel. They remind me of the old I Love Lucy show. Squirrel sees a bike he has to have and comes up with an ideal that he and Sloth can earn money by working in a pickle factory. Imagine I Love Lucy working in the candy factory and that is what happens. They get fired but that doesn't stop them.
A very funny laugh out loud book. Your kids will love this and will become one that is read many times. And because of that it is one that you won't tire of! Love it!
A Special Thank you to Kids Can Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This is the story of an unlikely friendship between a very speedy squirrel and a very slow sloth who, despite their differences, work together and achieve their end goals.
This story has multiple messages. Besides the one mentioned above, about working with each other, I believe it also teaches us about how to be responsible, to stick by our friends and work with what we have even when all seems lost and to me, these are all messages we can draw valuable morals from.
The text and design are very witty and funny and, besides the messages behind the story, I liked how heartwarming it was, and I believe small kids will like it too.
What a wonderfully cute picture book about two friends who want to earn money. Through this story, kids learn that one should have patience with others, take their time and do their best work, and to problem-solve.
Thank you NetGalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read an advance reading copy.
This is the story of a friendship between a sloth and a squirrel. Weird at it might seems, I learned that any kind of friendship in the world can be made with completing each other. You can achieve your dreams, according to this book. So please have a peek at least, to see how good this book is. I am enthralled since the cover page.
This is such a fun book. The colourful, but calm, illustrations show lots of emotion and help keep the story moving. I love the different messages in the story, and think this will be a much loved favourite for many children and adults alike.
The illustrations in this picture book are amazing and the storyline is cute and funny. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Sloth and Squirrel want a bike, but they have to work in order to save money for the bike.
This story is about the cute friendship between a sloth and a squirrel who want to go on a bike ride together but need a bike. They both get jobs in a pickle packing factory and chaos ensues...
This is a lovely story with a cute pair of animals, it’s funny and the illustrations are cute and hilarious. I can see lots of the children in class really enjoying them.
Thank you NetGalley and Kids Can Press for the digital advance reading copy of Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle.
This was such a cute book. I absolutely love Sloths they are amazing, and squirrels are okay. ;) I love that when life gave them pickles they made the pickles the solution to their bicycle problem.
This is a cute story about an unlikely pair making the best of a situation and working to earn a bike. It's a silly book sure to get kids laughing and learning about earning things they want.
Many thanks to Kids Can Press and NetGalley for the advance copy.
A cute book about teamwork, working toward your dreams, and finding unique solutions when you find yourself...in a pickle. A different take on the tortoise and the hair story, with a modern industrial twist. The illustrations are beautiful. This is a very cute story with a fun little ending.
This was such a cute book with a great problem and solution! As a teacher, I could reading this to my students as a model text to ask them probing questions in order to spur on their thinking. The book reminded me of Elephant and Piggy. The ideal age for the children who would read this book themselves or have it read to them would be five to seven.
Thanks to Kids Can Press & NetGalley for this review copy of Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle by Cathy Ballou Mealey.
Both hilarious and heartwarming, Sloth and Squirrel work together to earn enough money to buy a bike they can ride together (they want to be fast) - but of course Sloth isn't fast - and earning money isn't as easy as it sounds. Perfect for lovers of squirrels, sloths, teamwork, and of course, pickles.
Great illustrations, fun concept and I appreciate that the book doesn't end up with the characters getting what they thought they wanted. A universal theme of kids working to purchase something they want and the challenges they face. I liked the juxtaposition between the squirrel and sloth's personalities and the ending is a lot of fun.
Review to come April 22nd on my blog and Goodreads.
I received this book from Netgalley/publisher in exchange of an honest review.
This cover just said READ ME! And so I had to get this book on Netgalley, I just cannot resist a cover like that. :P
This book is about two best, but maybe unlikely, friends. A hyper squirrel and a very slow but (as said by squirrel) reliable sloth. These two are just lounging around when they see someone on a bicycle (which had me and my husband in stitches as the bunny never could reach the pedals). They want a bike and find a job. I knew from then how things would end, though in the end it was still a surprise! I love love it when authors add a twist to something.
But thankfully our friends aren't giving up on their goal which had me smiling, go boys! I loved their plan and I was rooting for them!
And then came the ending and I was just laughing so hard. I showed it to my hubby who laughed and nodded that this fitted very well. I won't spoil anything, but Wheeeeeee! ;)
The art was really fun, I loved how well you could see the personalities shine through the characters. The illustrator really captured the hyperness of the squirrel and the slow-slow-slow personalities of the characters.
All in all, I am so happy I had the chance to read this one and I would recommend it. Such a fun book!
