An engaging decades old murder mystery of a 17 year old girl. In 1985 a young pregnant girl gets on a bus leaving her family behind and travels to Fog Harbor thinking she was going to make a big change in her life. Now 35 years later her body is found encased in a barrel in an old abandoned cabin where is had sat all this time for someone to find and her story could be told.
Homicide detective Will Decker has just moved into the cabin next door and is first on the scene. He and his partner JB are assigned the case and Will eventually enlist Criminal Psychologist Olivia Rockwell to help. The investigation was fascinating and each clue just lead to more suspects and questions.
This being the second book in the series there were many things continued on from the first book. Olivia and her sister Emily still reeling from revelations about their father are dealt a heartbreaking blow which in turns leads to more questions and revelations.
Will also has many past demons he is still fighting along with his ever growing attraction to Emily. We get more info about his incarcerated brother when he has to be moved to the prison Olivia practices at for his safety.
Along with Will and Olivia the series has a rather large group secondary characters which provide plenty of humor. I'm really enjoying this series and look forward to more.
Are you looking for action? An epic car chase? Slow burn romance that's filled with tension? What about really cool crime scenes? Twist and turns you never see coming? Then this is the book for you! I love Decker and Rockwell! Even though this book is on the longer side: it never once dragged on. Which is something other books in this genre have done for me. It's perfectly paced between keeping you on the edge of your seat and giving you room to breathe before the next big moment.
As with every book, this author's writing keeps getting better. She's getting so good with her witty dialogue and I'm here for it!
Start this series today! You will not regret it! It's worth it alone for the gritty world the author has built and how she keeps flushing out these complex characters. I can't wait to see where this goes next!
*Thanks to the author and NetGalley for this title in exchange for an honest review*
Will go live 1/3/2021
Warning! Habit Forming Series!
This second book in Ellery Kane’s Fog Harbor series is the perfect follow up to Watch Her Vanish. There is a dead body and a parole hearing right out of the gate. Olivia is dealing with a personal tragedy while she assists Deck with this new case involving a decades old murder. This installment has four to five stories that are intertwined and not in the least bit difficult to wrap your mind around. Dealing with this murder case and Olivia and Deck’s personal issues makes this a perfect series. Not to mention the sexual tension!
The thrills do not end and a heart stopping scene in the climax are enough to keep your eyes glued to this book! The past makes several appearances and like a budding flower, the characters are evolving and I personally appreciate their slowly unfolding backstories. This is how series books should be written!
Ms Kane has a great ability to drop breadcrumbs throughout each and every chapter that lead you to the killer or killers in a plausible, well thought out manner. The developing love story between Olivia and Deck is a nice bonus and leaves you wanting one more chapter! This is coming from a reader who really is not into romance novels at all!
Buckle your seatbelt and prepare for a bumpy ride!
Excellent book! I can not wait for more Rockwell & Decker!
The character development is excellent, I am totally invested in them, and need to find out more of their adventures.
Keep 'em coming!
Thanks to netgalley and Ellery Kane for the ARC.
I love a good police procedural but this one was lacking for me. Unfortunately there were so many side plots going on that as a reader, I got confused. The many sidewinders drew away from the main case. I enjoyed the short chapters and the multiple perspectives. Overall, an interesting book but needs a good edit. My thanks to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.
Her Perfect Bones (Rockwell and Decker #2), my second back-t0-back read from author Ellery A. Kane. This seems to be my month for new authors. An outstanding read, captivating in its detail and development and as the second book in the Rockwell & Decker series, the development & detail is even more in depth. I was gifted a free copy and I'm voluntarily reviewing it because every good books need reviews. I look forward to more from this author and I'm sure there will be more in what looks to be an excellent series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
A great second book in this series! Love the characters - love the story - love the family drama and dynamics. Can't wait to see where things go with Ben and Termite!
A fast-paced, well-written crime thriller that leaves you wanting more!
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.
Thank you, Net Galley, for not only allowing me to pretend this book, but for helping my find a new author to read and enjoy.
I fancy myself a murder mystery junkie and this book did not leave me hanging. I found myself dropped into a book with Detective Decker, JB and psychologist who fancies her self a detective, Olivia. This book kept me interested and page turning throughout the book. When I had to set it down, it haunted me until I could continue. I can hardly wait to see what the author has in store next!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Yes I want Liv and Deck to get together but I really appreciate how the author is making it realistic and not having them fall in love together after a single glance. However, if when they do get together and we only get a few pages of their love story I will be miffed! I am waiting with baited breath to find out what the heck Termite told Liv! Book 3 needs to be here asap!!!
The saga continues with another fun story. Set once again in Fog Harbor, Will and Olivia find themselves thrown together in what can only be described as a "very cold case." Ellery lays out a good story with a few plot twists and some surprises that take the reader on a thrill ride until the final conclusion. As with all of Ellery's works, don't start this one at night unless you are ready to lose some sleep...these stories are just too difficult to put down. Looking forward to the next in the series.
The second book in the Rockwell and Decker series, Her Perfect Bones is a fast-paced action thriller. At 88 chapters, this was one long read with not a dull moment to spare.
The mummified corpse of a young girl is discovered in the cabin neighbouring to Decker's and soon the Fog Harbour police department is on the trail of a murder committed 35 years ago. With very little clues, a long row of suspects and two more people dead, Decker and his partner JB, along with Olivia are racing against time in search of the murderer before more bodies drop. In a parallel vein, Olivia is also investigating the death of her father while Decker deals with family issues.
Being new to Ellery Kane and the series, I was curious to see how this would turn out. Reading this book felt a lot like watching my favourite police procedurals.
• Gruesome crime scene - check
• Witty banter between cops - check
• Slow burn between H/h - check
• High tension car chase - check
• Shooting - check... and lots more.
Anyhow, the constant twists and turns kept me hooked and the ending was one that I wasn't expecting. So, that's a win. The writing style though, did throw me off a bit. One minute I would be reading the script of a cop show and the next minute the author was waxing poetic on the pages. I had to check if I had unconsciously switched books, a couple of times.
Overall, I would give this book a 4.5 stars. It was well-written with humour and suspense to ensure the reader kept going till the end.
A big thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for approving my request for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another good one from Ellery Kane,, a well written mystery with humor, engaging characters and a will they or won't they or rather a when will they romance. Ellery's works have depth and psychological insights, main character with guts, determination, flaws challenging family histories and dynamics . Characters you root for. Her language is direct and poetic at times with beautiful phrases and imaging and insightful zingers that leave you stunned at times. Read this book and then go and read all her books
This has got to be my favorite book of 2020. I wish the pandemic never happened just so I didn’t have to homeschool and would’ve had more time to live in these pages. I’m in love with these characters. The heat between Olivia and Decker leaves me rooting for them. The complexity of the supporting characters is done so brilliantly. The plot was intriguing and the ending leaves you needing more. Another perfect edition of Ellery’s to add to my library.
This second installment in the mystery/thriller series featuring criminal psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Fog Harbor, California, Detective Will Decker, continues a couple of months after the first. Since #1 ended with a bit of unfinished business involving escaped serial killer Drake Devere, I expected a resolution with him, but this book focuses on an entirely different situation even as it dangles more information about Olivia's convict father.
A young woman's body is found in a barrel in the basement of the cabin next door to Will's woodland home. Of course it's a homicide and Will and his partner, JB, are tasked with finding out what happened in this 35-year-old murder. Who is the girl and what happened to her in that house? NO SPOILERS.
A bit more fast-paced than the first, the narrative moves along told from the alternating viewpoints of Olivia and Will. Some of what happens seems a bit far-fetched as Olivia's involvement in the case as some sort of liaison to the Fog Harbor PD puts her always right in the action. The interaction between Olivia and Will is meant to be platonic and professional but each secretly really wants romance so that got really annoying. Just hook up already! I enjoyed this well enough but I had figured out where it was going fairly early on. Still waiting as more tidbits about Olivia's dad are revealed, and figure this is going to go on forever. I am not sold on either of the characters but do get a kick out of JB's sense of humor. Will I read the third? I figure it's at least a year away so I will need a reminder to look for it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review. It was really good to read it immediately after finishing the first in the series. Definitely you will not want to start this book without having read that one.
This is a solid, interesting crime drama.
A body is found in a barrel that's been in a basement for many years. Who was the young, pregnant woman with the 1984 t-shirt? So starts a murder mystery with strong characters and a solid narrative.
I enjoyed it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookoutre publishing for the opportunity to preview.
An intriguing beginning to this book, leads you down some twisty, slipper slopes, with some well crafted characters. I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. I would highly recommend this book for being well crafted and the suspense built up between the characters. Thank you to Bookoture for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this story.
