The Granny Reid mysteries are quite a bit more serious in tone than your typical cozy mystery series, covering difficult, yet important subjects. That isn't to say, however, they still aren't an entertaining read--or listen. The narrator, Mil Nicholson, does an excellent job bringing life to this small Georgia community and the Reid family and friends.

This is the first I have read/listened to in the series. This is the third book in A Granny Ried Mystery series. I found it interesting to read about Savannah’s family before she became a cop. McGill, GA sounds like a warm and caring community.
Granny Ried sounds like a grandmother I would be happy to have as my own.
The story is poignant for the times. It covers intolerance, racism and sexism.
Lots of twists and turns. I was not expecting the ending.
I was fortunate enough to be offered this audio book via Netgalley. Thank-you for allowing me to listen and review while getting my exercise in on a daily basis. Looking forward to the next installment and the two I have missed.

Murder at Mabel's Motel by G.A. McKevett is the 3rd book in A Granny Reid Mystery series, and I really enjoyed it. First of all I love the Savannah Reid Mystery series, so I am excited to read this series too, and I was not disappointed. This book goes back in time to tell how Granny Reid who was awarded custody of Savannah and her 6 siblings. When a man is found dead in an abandon motel, after he beat up a girl, than escaped from the police, Granny and the Sheriff, go looking for the killer. I loved this book and strongly recommend anyone who likes cozy mystery, especially Savannah Reid series. I look forward to the next book in this series. Honestly I was not crazy about the narrator in this audiobook. The narrator's voice seemed to old for the story, in this case I preferred to read the book instead. The story is 5 stars, and the narrator is 3 stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It’s the first one I’ve read by this author. Right away I loved the characters. I didn’t know that there’s another series featuring the character, Savannah, in it. I’ll for sure be checking that out. By the way, I want to thank #DreamscapeMedia and #NetGalley for the pleasure of this listen. I want to point out that when I was a good ways in, maybe halfway, I had to stop and check the title to see if it was the same book I thought I was listening to because the title is all about a murder at Mabel’s Motel. The mention of said motel and the murder didn’t occur until about halfway. Or at least a good ways in. I was worried the title wouldn’t have much to do with the book but I was wrong. There was build up to why the title was chosen. I’ve never read a book laid out that way. It was a nice touch. I loved the grandchildren of Stella’s. And how Savannah helped her granny in a lot of ways, even when she didn’t realize she was. I’m having a hard time putting it into words, but it was so clever how the author tied in everything and the big point on how they solved the case. I want to say more but don’t want to give anything away. What a brilliant mind the author has! This was such a feel good read because of the hearts of Stella and her family. There were some sad parts but that is to be expected.
The narrator was superb. The voices went perfect with every character. I think this is now my favorite narrator for cozy mysteries. I live in the south, in NC, right at the Georgia line. The accent was great.

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery set in a small town in Georgia. The characters were really cool, and there were so many suspects in the killing of Billy Ray that it was fun to dig through the clues and evidence with Stella "Granny" Reid. This was my first book from this series, but I still felt like I knew the characters as the story developed. I will definitely check out the other books in this series. The narrator for the story was also really good.
I received an ARC copy of the audible book from Netgalley, but it had no affect on my review.

Take a step back in time to the 1980’s in Georgia. When Stella and Sheriff Manny are out to dinner, a young woman is attacked. Together, this 7 time grandmother and the arm of the law seek out what happened. After the culprit of the attack is captured (and escapes), he is found dead. Manny and Stella must find out who did it.
Opinion
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator has the perfect southern grandmother voice for this book. Listening to her is like listening to my own grandmother telling me a story. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable affair.
As for the story, it comes to a slow boil and then BOOM!, something happens to rock your socks. This is a really quaint book that reminds you of yesteryear.
Many thanks to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC of this audiobook.

I liked the budding romance between Stella and Manny. Stella is a wonderful grandmother and stood up to her son as a mother (much neede). The book addresses tough topics but I wasn’t happy with the ending or the audio reader. The reader did a great job giving Stella a voice but other characters missed the mark. The book is full of Southern sayings but almost too many. Reading about a small town in Georgia was enjoyable.

Murder at Mabel's Motel by G.A. McKevett is a fun cozy mystery set in the 1980s! This is the third book in the Granny Reid Mysteries and stars full time Grandma of seven, Stella, and her co-investigator Sheriff Manny. This series is set in the adorable small town of McGill, Georgia. I have not read or listened to the first two books in this series, but had no problem following along and enjoyed the book. It was fun seeing a mystery solved without using modern technology or social media.

This series is a prequel to the long running Savannah Reid series, which I enjoy. It's always nice to see where your favorite characters come from and how they became the people they are. Granny Reid has always been Granny but now she's Stella, a younger but still awesome version of herself. The story itself is syrupy sweet at times but the mystery is well written and keeps you guessing until the end.

Since m already a huge fan of Granny and Savanna, reading this book was an absolute joy.
A hot date for granny has all the grandchildren up in arms, and it was so funny to listen to all their reactions. Naturally murder and an investigation take place, and once again Granny and Savanna work as a team to unravel the clues.

I'm aware that this is the third book in a series and that I probably should have read the first two to get to know the characters better before diving into this book but I was looking for a cozy mystery to listen to and when I saw this one on Netgalley, I didn't hesitate.
Murder at Mabel's Motel was interesting and had its cute moments between the characters and I was curious about the mystery and how it would end. This book also dealt with racism among serious topics. Overall, I was interested and entertained but I didn't completely love it. The narrator wasn't my favorite but that's a personal preference.
<i>(Thank you for letting me read and review an ARC via Netgalley)

wonderful Little murder mystery book. I have not read the others in the series before this book, but I was also not lost because of that.
The characters were wonderful, and the plot was well written. The Plot twist at the end with the murderer was a shock that knocked me off kilter for sure.
I also liked the way that topics like the Holocaust were addressed. This is something that has to be approached with caution and I feel like it was handled well here.
I think I'll backtrack and give the others in the series a go as well.
great book!

cozy-mystery, murder, law-enforcement, whodunit, situational-humor, verbal-humor, discrimination

Such fun! I haven't read a Samantha Reid mystery in a while (can't think why) but I remember enough to know that I loved them. This is before the Samantha series and is every bit as much fun and with good sleuthing, too! Stella is raising her grandchildren while their parent is in prison and it's a real trial. She is seeing fellow widow Sheriff Manny whom she'd known since childhood and he doesn't get bent out of shape when she snoops along and gets quite bossy. Good plot, interesting characters, and a lot of laughs. Loved it!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
I win twice! I later requested an audio copy from Dreamscape Media and found that although the accents used by Mil Nicholson were a little iffy, I got a lot more enjoyment from the story and even noticed things that I missed in print. She has the gift of narrative, selecting voices that match the people who are speaking.
Also worth noting is that the publisher's blurb is really good this time.
