PTA's at US schools can be brutal. And nothing shows is clearer than this story. I blame not loving this one on two things - not liking the audio narration of the MC Kira and not liking either MC. I found both girls unlikable. I found the story a bit over the top and the reasoning a little silly. I did like the ending after the court and how that all played out. I wish I'd loved this one. I think it would be good to read because I was not a fan of the audio.
I listened to the audio of this as I try to clear out my backlog and all I kept thinking was Kira sounded just like an evil Blanche Devereaux, but I digress. Overall, this book was okay, slower than I would have liked with an incredibly entitled, arrogant main character which you're meant to hate (and the author does a great job of this!) Not sure there was really even a decent twist, although I did find myself shaking my head in disgust at a point or two. Thanks for the opportunity to read this, I've never read this author before but I will still check them out!
This story is perfect for those who enjoy characters you love to hate. Suburban PTA moms, attempted murder, legal shenanigans, infused with some humor...it reminded me of shows like Desperate Housewives and Big Little Lies. Quite enjoyable!
I haven't read anything by this author before, and I was pleasantly surprised. Kira is accused of attempted murder, and will be defended by Allison, a single mother lawyer. Allison has a lot of personal issues she has to deal with, as well as an idiot boss, and still she tries to defend Kira effectively. I enjoyed the book and will read more by the author in future.
If you like mysteries with questionable ethics and unlikeable characters with a smidge of romance, then pick up The Darkest Flower. The book is written from two POV, Alison who is a struggling single mom and defense lawyer and Kira, the very unlikeable PTA mom. Alison struggles with how she feels about defending Kira and her feelings toward the other lawyer while also desperately needing to win the case. Kira, well Kira is a stuck up, rich PTA mom who will do ANYTHING for her kids.
The book was enjoyable. I honestly can't say I liked any of the characters but the story itself was good and I was not expecting the little twist at the end. I would read the second book.
Thank you netgalley for the free ARC for an honest review.
Loved this book! The perfect read if you like stories that have women at the front and centre of it all - with their secrets, stories and much more!
A fun read, would be great for the beach!
Mystery keeps you involved and before you know it you’ve almost read the whole book.
A dark fun read :)
Reading through other reviews I had low expectations but what a FAB book! I really liked this book so much! The characters are unique, interesting and so layered & twisted. The Darkest Flower is a great book so much that I had to go hunting and see if the next book was available on NetGalley or Amazon. I'm amazed at the characters especially Allison Barton & Kira Grant. Sooooo interesting! Kira definitely made a mark on my mind, what an incredible character! Kristin definitely got it right with her characters! I found myself turning pages late into the night. Allison as a lawyer was so good, so methodical, so smart, so amazing! I think I have a new favorite character who's NOT a cop! The plot was ingenious and so twisted I was hooked on it & wanted to see it unravel with no respect for my body's need for sleep and rest. It was unique and had me guessing till the very end. However, the ending with respect to the characters fates felt vague and didn't bring me closure but I see what the author did there and I will most definitely will be picking up the next book to see what happens to Allison. But most of all I WANT to know Kira's fate! Will you consider bringing her back again in a future book again please?
Thank you NetGalley, Thomas and Mercer & Kristin Wright for an arc!
Well, this is another book I picked by the gorgeous cover and I'm glad I did. I thought the book was an entertaining, crazy ride and I loved every minute of it. The book is well written, and the characters are intense. Overall, this was just an excellent read.
Books about suburban moms and PTA moms are among my favorites. I am excited to see this one is the first in a series!
An excellent read that keeps you turning the pages. I enjoy and greatly appreciate that Ms. Wright has created a suspenseful, but not boring legal thriller with all of the twisty goodness of a juicy psych thriller.
When PTA president and helicopter mom Kira is accused of poisoning another PTA member, Attorney Allison must put aside her general dislike of the woman, and as the case proceeds her own conscience, to defend Kira.
To me, The Darkest Flower reads as a law procedural with a touch of romantic suspense. While there is an intriguing mystery, what makes this book so compelling is the characters and the social commentary. Kira’s unapologetic cruel wit and working mom Allison’s sympathetic self-doubt covers the spectrum of all the funny, unkind, heartfelt, stressful, and often overwhelming thoughts a parent might have.
Oh, and when you think you’ve figured out the ending, you’ll still be wrong.
I realized this wasn't a book that would work for me before I downloaded it. Clearing out my backlog of Archived, Not Downloaded.
i really enjoyed reading this mystery novel, I loved the simplicity of the cover. The plot was really well done and had great characters. I look forward to more from the author.
It was like turning a rock upside down and finding creepy things underneath. Women so tied to their positions in schools and on boards that they only see position and postering as fulfillment. When these are challenged or threatened drastic measures are the only answer. Enter Kiro into this world of poisoned smoothies and adult mean girl tactics. You may chuckle at the mirror effect it may cause you to experience.
This just didn’t end up being a book that interested me. When I first read the premise, I was very excited and invested, but getting into it made it clear that it just wasn’t for me. Hopefully it works for others out there!
This book was so fun to read, fast paced and well developed. I thought it was an interesting technique to show the perspective of an attorney and her client during a trial for attempted murder. At first. PTA mom Kira comes off as merely overbearing in her parental style, but over the course of the story, it becomes clear that her depravity knows no depths. Meanwhile, her attorney Alison is struggling with whether the case, and her career, are worth more to her than her integrity. The only thing that it really didn't need was a love story, which seemed like an afterthought.
Thank you to netgalley for an advance copy!
The Darkest Flower is a fast-paced, addictive legal thriller about the PTA president accused of murdering a fellow mom in the PTA at a child's graduation party. The plot is filled with plenty of twists. Highly recommended!
DNF - Did not finish. I decided not to keep reading this title because I did not connect with the writing or plot. Thank you, NetGalley and publisher for the early copy!
I wanted to like this.. It sounded good and I liked the alternating chapters but I just had to force myself to keep reading. Kira was terrible, and I know she was supposed to be, but I just couldn't deal. Sometimes I have books where I hate the character but still love the book - not this time. Can't quite explain why, this one just wasn't for me.
