I know, I know. Most of the readers really did enjoy reading this book. But the format of the past ten years of the character's life was really confusing for me. I just could not get into that format. It was really stuck into the past rather than the present. I want to know what's going on rather than what's leading up to. Sorry, this book was not for me. Maybe it will for you but not me. No hard feelings.
A plot twist indeed!
The concept of the book is so interesting, a screenwriter and an actor both trying to make their dreams come true. It was such an entertaining read, I found myself so invested in the story that I couldn't stop reading it, even though sometimes Olivia was a little annoying.
I liked the way it was told, that makes us, the readers, want to know what would happen next no just with the main character but with all the characters involved.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun, clean, and quick read.
I wasn't a fan of the number of references in the story, that was a little too much for me, but besides that, I was completely surprised by this book!
This is my favorite quote, why? because sometimes we feel like a supporting character in life.
"I had long ago accepted the fact that I was a supporting character, and supporting characters don’t fall in love with leading men. But it’s perfectly acceptable for them to be friends. In fact, that’s the whole reason supporting characters are there."
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the ARC of the ebook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was read thanks to NetGalley, review by me.
This book had me hooked from chapter 1 until the end. My favorite thing about it is how the protagonist grows, the idea of this book is that we meet with our protagonist one day per year, every February 4th and how her life gets "messed" by this day...
I highly enjoyed it, because at least for me she grows from day one to the end. She learned to deal with that life throw at her this day, and how it affected her life.
I highly recommend it, it's a good, quick read.
This is the story of a woman, her best friend, an ex boyfriend and a stranger she bumped into one day. It all starts in the early 2000s on February 4th. As the story unwinds, each piece is told on the subsequent February 4th. The woman, Olivia, is trying to find her place in the world and her forever love.
Opinion
The idea of writing about only one day each year is brilliant. Bethany Turner pulls it off masterfully. She is able to convey what has happened in the last full year that the reader barely notices the absence of the other 364 days. As the title suggests, the ending comes with one phenomenal plot twist that you will never see coming. This unique novel is one that will please romance lovers.
Many thanks to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC of this book.
Oh my stars, this story gave me such a book hangover! In case you don't already know I'm one of Bethany Turner's biggest fans and Plot Twist was one of my most anticipated reads of 2021! Before I finished the first chapter I was in love with the story, and I could not put it down until I finished it because I had to know what was going to happen, and I knew I'd never be able to sleep until I did so I ended up reading most of it in a day! I can't remember the last time I read a full length novel this fast, I've been in such a reading slump so far this year, and this book made me remember (for the first time in ages) why I love to read! I loved, loved, LOVED Plot Twist SOOOOO much (the greeting card verses, and snippets of Olivia's screenplay are just some of the things I adored about this story) and it's my favorite read of the year so far! Liam was an awesome hero, I loved him! I also loved Olivia, I'm turning 30 in a couple months and I found myself totally relating to Olivia feeling like a supporting character in her own life, I loved the journey she went on throughout this story! Oh, and, I loved Fiona, she was such fun! If you love Iris's journey of self-discovery in the movie The Holiday, you'll love this book! If you love the movie Isn't It Romantic?, you'll love this book! And if you love George Clooney, you'll adore this book!
Plot Twist blessed my heart in so many ways and I absolutely adored every single minute of it! Bethany Turner has penned yet another romcom masterpiece! Snag this gem, this is one you do not wanna miss!
I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley, and proceeded to pre-order my own paperback copy because I loved it so much! My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
This is a love story that's all about ironies, and how we manage our expectations in a relationship.
What is the perfect kiss? How doe we know when we have met THE ONE? Olivia is convinced she wants to settle down with Liam. He is everything she should want - stable, successful, doting. But the one thing Liam doesn't seem to possess, that Olivia has in spades, is a sense of humor.
And then Olivia meets Hot Scotsman in a chance coffee shop encounter. They agree to meet again in the same place exactly ten years later. The date they meet, February 4, becomes a harbinger in Olivia's life.
Every February 4, for the next ten years, something momentous always happens to Olivia. Job changes, residential changes, relationship developments. And the whole time, through all of her transitions, Liam is the bedrock. They are best friends - and then they are best friends who drift apart. When Liam starts dating Olivia's best friend, Fiona, he officially becomes off limits.
But Fiona isn't Olivia, and Hot Scotsman isn't who Olivia thinks he is. And everything comes to light on February 4 - ten years after it began.
This was a sweet, clean, funny, poignant romance about finding yourself and bringing your life full-circle.
(4.5 stars) - Plucky comic relief
Plot Twist is rather different; it has a faint Groundhog Day flavor to it. We're introduced to the event that influences all that follows in Olivia's life for the next decade - which we're caught up on each year on February 4th.
I wasn't sure about the premise, which is obviously unlikely & necessarily guarantees a choppy plot to some degree, but it totally pulled me in anyway. It's a mash-up of women's fiction & romance. It's fun, but it's also frustrating. The characters are a bit unusual, bordering on eccentric, & yet believable. Their imperfections & insecurities are so human that at times I wanted to slap them upside the head, & other times wanted to hug & comfort them.
Olivia is her own worst, self-sabotaging enemy. When I was much younger (long before the internet), I actually knew someone who was a little like her - this friend believed that if she couldn't visualize something happening, it was because it wasn't meant to happen, & she actually made her decisions based on that. She actually skipped out on a ski trip because of it. I asked how, if she'd never done something before, would she be able to visualize it? She just shrugged and said she'd think about it. Crazy.
It's hard to tell where the story is going, & I'm not going to give anything away, but if you dislike love triangles, you may not want to read this. On the other hand, I normally dislike a lot of the things that are in here (including love triangles) but really enjoyed this book, anyway.
It's got little twists that kept me reading, so I guess it lived up to its title. 😊
*Romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic
I went into this book with high hopes of reading an amazing rom-com but as I approached the 35% mark, my hopes dissipated quickly (I even went back to reading the blurb to see if I was wrong in my expectations). By this point I was not only bored with the story but also frustrated with the characters. I didn't like Olivia (Liv) and didn't invest myself in her story. I was intrigued by her initially, but ultimately it proved to be too much work to find something relatable in the character.
All in all, an okay read for me.
Thus book had a good story and a fresh delivery, but I found the female lead to be highly immature for her age. It made the plot feel a bit unrealistic. I received a gifted copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
This book takes my 5 stars for the great creativity of making plot twist after plot twist, it's all a celebration of plot twists. Each chapter brings something new, even each page at times. There is nothing as you might expect. Except, thank God, for the end, in a typical Meg & Tom fashion.
It is hard to review this book without giving spoilers, the description says it all (and not much, but that's the beauty of it. Go blindly, it will be worth it). There is so much going on though, the actions goes on for 10 years. I didn't like the Olivia in the beginning, and was upset at times with her but only because I knew so well the place where her actions came from.
Though it's not one of my favorite tropes, it's so beautifully written, Olivia has such a big heart and the other characters are thoroughly so likeable this became a charming read. There are so many conflicting feelings that the author put so well into the pages. I adored the references to all our beloved rom-coms, her distaste for them, it really felt like a good old movie like this. Not much of a real world feel at times, but that's just the funny, joyful, serendipitous charm of this book.
The story left me with a warm happy feeling, happy that after many troubles and coincidences that life offers the matter was settled. However, it got me thinking a lot about a quote I once read: "what a mess I have made with nothing but an idea that I am not enough". Here the supporting character gest her own spotlight and the chance of getting out of that mess.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you @NetGalley, @seebethanywrite, and Thomas Nelson for the free copy!
REVIEW:
This has been one of the cutest and entertaining books I’ve read for this year! I enjoyed this Romantic Comedy so much—the plot, the characters (especially, Liam), the references, and the twists! There were so many things that went on in this book but I didn’t find it hard to keep up because of how fun it was! I’m honored to have been given the chance to read and review this book because it was a good one! If you are looking for a fun and easy read this summer or a story about love, fate, hope, and friendships, you should check this out!
AVAILABLE STARTING TOMORROW, JUNE 15th, 2021
This book is a real plot twist. I have read every book by Bethany Turner and loved them all but the description reminded me a lot of the movie "One Day" which I loved but I feared a loss of originality. Fear totally unfounded, yes like the movie we are only seeing the same day for a number of years but the author once again brought her wit and originality to this book. I looked forward to each "year" to see what it brought and each held it's own plot twist because it was not what I was expecting. Even as the day started it ended differently in unique ways with it's own element of humor, heartbreak or triumph.
The characters were engaging and even with the glimpse of just a day being able to recognize the growth or lack of, the heart breaks or breakthroughs, the changes, setback and maturing of the last year as well as it's impact on the current without being bogged down in too much detail. Just enough to advance the story yet still fall in love with them and be eager to see what the year held. BRILLIANT.
The ending, which I am not going to spoil, is it's own plot twist which I was totally not expecting. Well the ending ending I was hoping, but the just before the end ending, total plot twist. If you got that great.
Plot Twist is a quick read that pairs perfectly with summer vibes and good humor. I’ll be honest - my opinion on this one has gone back and forth. I loved the format of this book, jumping to February 4th each year and showing how Sophie’s life had changed and all the crazy coincidences. The guys kept coming and there were a lot of unexpected moments. Every chapter (or year) had at least one surprise in store.
It really does keep you on your toes and hits a few of your favorite romance tropes - friends to lovers, a love triangle, soul mates, and probs more. However I struggled with Sophie as a character. She starts the story as a 30 year old but her emotional maturity makes me thinks she’s more like 20. Overall her decisions and lifestyle all would have made more sense if she was 20 aging to 30. Instead by the time she gets it together at the end of the book she’s 40 and I was left thinking why did you just waste 10 years of your life like that? She just seems so miserable the whole book and doesn’t seem to care to change her life to … idk not hate it??? I liked the story but Sophie annoyed the living crap out of me.
I’d recommend this to romance lovers who enjoy surprises. There’s at least a couple “plot twists” in here to entertain you!
Lovely Story!
'Plot Twist' is about Olivia an aspiring screenwriter; on the 4th of February 2003, she meets a stranger who is an actor, they make a pact that if both of them haven't made a hit in the movie industry they both will meet up again in 10 years time and help each other to make their dream come true. Turns out that there is a new adventure waiting for Olivia on every 4th of February in the coming years... Get reading to accompany Olivia on an amazing journey!
I enjoyed reading it, I especially enjoyed reading the poem-like paragraphs that there is in the book! They are related to what happened in the chapters and I found myself going back to re-read them!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
2.5 stars rounded up to 3, as I have conflicting feelings about this book. I thought the premise was interesting - sweet and potentially romantic. Some of the banter was witty and made me laugh out loud. And I appreciated some of the life lessons that were learned along the path of the 10 years that the book follows. However, I felt that Olivia was very immature for her age, and there was too much of the thoughts whirling around in her head. A great deal of the movement of the story is based on things that the characters aren't saying to each other, and I really dislike when the plot hinges on characters not talking to each other. There was a major plot twist toward the end, and I actually thought that the author pulled that off, but some of the other issues were just too much for me. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book is delightfully full of the best elements of everything that makes a great romantic comedy, which is ironic because Olivia Ross hates rom-coms but has the perfect meet-cute in a coffee shop that results in 10 years of spectacular events happening to her on February 4.
It takes place over a series of there's no way this is happening situations that seem perfectly natural within the story and due to Olivia constantly denying the fact that what's happening is even happening. It results in fun and memorable scenes that make you care about the characters and what happens to them. With extra props to Turner for managing to make the events of each year completely original while making sure to keep everything connected.
Overall, this is the book I'd recommend to anyone looking for a fun, quicky romantic comedy that expertly uses all the tropes that make the genre the delicious treat that it is.
Many happy thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the early read!
Completely torn about this one. While on one hand the relationship between Olivia and Liam works especially after they break up, then add the mysterious irish guy she meets and the pact they make to meet again in ten years time and my confusion begins. We follow her as she documents each February 4th leading up with some off the wall coincidences during the early 2000s. There were some references that went over my head but I'm sure were accurate that would briefly remove me from the storyline and became unsure who I was rooting for. Plot twists guaranteed and a few surprises, this book is perfect for those who want to follow a journey with an unapologetic trainwreck.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley for my honest opinion.
Plot Twist took me by surprise. I expected something fun and light, but I did not expect to obsessively read until I finished it in one sitting. I appreciated that Olivia was 30 when we met her, that she was still trying to figure her life out, and that she was so relatable. I love a good "we'll meet again in x years on this same day" trope, and this one was great. 5 rom-com loving stars.
The vibes of this book fit a late-90s/early 2000s romcom perfectly.
With an imperfect main character like Olivia who overthinks every situation, sabotages her own happiness, and exists in a constant state of panic, watching her fail and grow was quite the trip. On top of that, she was a refreshing perspective with being a character we see develop over a decade, from ages 30 to 40.
I also don't know why I didn't expect the plot twist when the title literally told me they would be present, but the ending was unexpected and an interesting and comedic way.
The fast-paced blurbs of Olivia's life and flawed characters had an entertaining dynamic with each other that easily kept my attention and how this story plays with fate reminded me of any Meg Ryan movie and the film Serendipity.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for an ARC of Plot Twist in exchange for my honest opinion.
One of my favorite things about this romcom was that the main character starts out at age 30 and over the course of the book she struggles with life, jobs, etc. over the ten years the story encompasses. I like that not everything is figured out and perfect in her life by age 25 - yay realistic life scenarios! I devoured this fun read in about a day and really loved all of the romcom movie references throughout. Recommended as a fun escapist choice that is more realistic than most romcoms.
