This book was an ok rom com read. The differing perspectives was a tad annoying at times, but the theme was cute and it was a quick read.

I loved the premise of this book and think it would make a darling movie!
Olivia has made a deal to reunite with a man she met a coffee shop on the same day 10 years later. We get a glimpse of what changes in Olivia’s life year to year.
A lot of great dramatic and comedic moments. A fun and lighthearted read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson for sending me a copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

This book was such a fun romcom that feels like the plot of a movie playing out. Plot Twist follows aspiring screenwriter Olivia Ross over a ten year span after they have the perfect meet cute in a coffee shop on February 4th and they make a pact to meet back at the same coffee shop in 10 years. Olivia will have her screenplay written and he will star in her movie. The book follows Olivia over the next ten as she struggles to write her screenplay, navigates friendships and love all in preparation to meet up with the mystery actor she made a deal with.

Each chapter jumps one year to the same date, February 4th. I really liked that the book was set up this way because it kept the plot moving fairly quickly. My only problem is that the chapters could become a bit confusing because not only are we getting Olivia's POV in the present but we also get her POV from the past year. Sometimes the chapters felt a bit bogged down by info because the reader is playing catchup and trying to move forward as well.

Overall this was a delightful read and I could totally see Plot Twist being made into a movie. It is full of romcom tropes, side characters, suprises and the perfect ending that leaves you smiling. Rating 3.5/5 stars.

I love the format of this book, peeking into one character’s journey on one day a year for a span of time. This can sometimes leave the reader feeling like, “wait did I miss something?,” but overall the author handles it well. A cute story that I quickly got into, and I enjoyed watching Livi’s progression throughout her career and with her best friend -, arguably more than the romance!

Plot Twist
By Bethany Turner
⭐️⭐️

🎬Aspiring screen writer Olivia meets a handsome actor with whom she makes a pact: in ten years they will come back to this same coffee shop and make a movie together.

👍🏼A fun premise of a book.

👎🏼The execution of this book just wasn’t there. It tried to go in so many directions and didn’t end up doing any of them well. The character development was nonexistent and super frustrating as a reader.

❎A fun idea that didn’t pan out. Skip this one, there are much better brain candy books out there.

Thank you @netgalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Plot Twist is good but feels slightly confused in its themes.

An intriguing premise where an actor and screenwriter agree to meet 10 years on in a cafe to work on a project together. The premise is enough to get you hooked, but the book fails to capitalize on this and begins to miss the mark.

Thematically, this novel is confused it commits to multiple themes of romance, female friendship, serendipity and fate. Spending time on each of these themes limits how impactful they could have been had the author focused on one or two of these in more detail.

The final scene ten years on in the same cafe fails to make the impact it could have, I got lost and had to read it several times to truly understand what was going on.

Plot Twist will find its market in fans of traditional women's fiction.

Thanks netgalley for my ARC.

Plot Twist is a fun quick read. Sometimes I got a little bogged down with all of the telling vs. showing, and for me the pacing was very out of tune until right at the very end. If you like sweet rom coms and quick beachy reads then this is definitely for you. It has kind of a clunky start, but you forget about it once it gets going. It's much more a story of finding yourself than what I would consider a true blue romance and it never sexy, so if that's something you look for then this may be a bit light.

I really wanted to love this book but there was too much that made me cringe at the end of the day to rate it much higher. The premise and synopsis sounds great in theory. I was thinking Serendipity meets One Day vibes. I also really enjoyed the witty banter. It was definitely comedic and gave me some good chuckles.

What I couldn’t figure out was what this book was about: was it about the guy she met at the cafe? Not really. It was more about her and her best friend, who acted like 16-20 year olds rather than 30-40 year olds. As someone who grew up in L.A., I enjoyed the cultural references but Fionas life just wasn’t even remotely plausible in my mind and she more often rubbed me the wrong way. Lastly, Olivia was not a relatable character and at times was toxic. Her attitude and negative outlook on life made it super difficult to enjoy the book. She did not deserve the person she ended up with.

I really appreciated the concept behind it and the writing was enticing but a decade was too drawn out and there was too much unnecessary information. This is more a Comedy than a RomCom.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher Thomas Nelson for an E-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was just ok for me. I was frustrated with the two main characters a lot it seemed like they were too old to still be trying to figure out their lives, and while I know it’s fiction I still just felt it was too much for her to be working on one screenplay for so long and then of course she gets everything she wants in the end. It was fine but I did fine myself annoyed with the characters for most of the book.

Olivia is an aspiring screenwriter working as a greeting card writer in Los Angeles. She lives with her childhood friend, Fiona, a charming girl that flits through life seemingly falling into dream jobs in the entertainment and fashion industries. Olivia feels she is a secondary character supporting the leads like Fiona. She's been dating a lawyer, Liam, for 8 months but feels he has no sense of humor and Fiona heartily agrees.

After meeting an aspiring actor (who she labels as a leading man) in a coffee shop she promises him a part in her screenplay with plans to meet back up in 10 years. Though Olivia finds him attractive she puts little stock into the promise aside from adding a calendar reminder to her phone for the same date in 2013. From there each chapter begins on the next year on the same date, it becomes an annual day in Olivia's life filled with peculiar and ironic occurrences.

Plot Twist is a story about understanding and accepting yourself and others – learning to communicate and be present. Despite the passing of a year per chapter, I never felt out of the loop, or as though I was missing details pertinent to the chapter I was presently on. I really enjoyed Olivia's voice, she was an easy character to like, even when she was being obtuse.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a light-hearted story of discovery and friendship. It was light on the romance, I don't think I would personally label Plot Twist as a romance.

I picked up Plot Twist expecting a traditional meet-cute and was pleasantly surprised to find it was so much more. The premise of Plot Twist, on the face, is pretty simple. Olivia, an aspiring screenwriter, meets an aspiring actor in a coffee shop on February 4th. They agree to meet at the same shop in ten years having achieved their career goals. (Such a Hollywood set up.) The story then checks in with her every February 4th for the next 10 years. I expected the story to mainly follow their story, but the book is more about Olivia's personal journey and how her close friendship with Fiona changes as they grow.

I did find the second chapter somewhat slower than the rest of the book but that's not bad seeing as I finished this book in two readings. The story flows well and the author does a great job keeping the reader up-to-date with what's going on in the characters' lives even though all of the main action takes place on February 4th of any given year.

I thought all of the characters were well-written and identifiable. In fact, I met all of these people in LA and for getting that right, I applaud the author. This is hard to do without making the characters seem like caricatures. But the author did a great job of developing fleshed out three-dimensional characters.

Aside from friendship, this book a has strong focus on perspective and how our perception of the world can drastically change how we view people and situations. I don't want to go into too much detail to avoid spoilers but Olivia's opinion/view on multiple people and situations change as her perception of them changes. I thought this was another clever addition on the part of the author.

If you're looking for a story of friendship, personal growth and a side of romance, pick this book up. You won't regret it. I'll definitely be checking out other books by the author.

I received a copy of the book in exchange for a review from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I struggled to get into this book but kept coming back to it because it was a unique premise and I wanted to see where it would lead. We take a journey through ten years with Olivia where she has her heart broken, deals with changing friendships and has some interesting personal twists.
There were some cute moments and a few laughs but I wasn’t drawn to the character. I truly loved the concept, but didn’t enjoy the execution.

I want to thank NetGalley, the author and publisher for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.

This was a light/quick romance with a twist of comedy. The first chapter grabbed my attention with the quick banter and originality. The premise of hitting-it-off with a handsome charismatic stranger and promising to meet back in ten years was so fun and exciting. The chapters were in year increments so I found it hard to invest in the characters. It was interesting to see what had happened in the past year but I think the story needed more development in the beginning. The characters/plot points were relatable so it seemed rather realistic although movie stars were involved (Hello, George Clooney 😍). The ending was a bit chaotic but I enjoyed the story for what it was - a simple, clean and fun rom-com.

OK, I have not loved a book this much in a long time! It is sooo good! It’s a rom com but so much more. And the snarky humor? Oh yeah! 😂

The story covers a decade (2003-2013) in the life of Olivia Ross, (she’s 30 in 2003), a greeting card writer aspiring to be a screenwriter in CA. On Feb. 4, 2003 she meets a charming, handsome stranger (an aspiring actor) in a coffee shop, and in a whimsical moment they make a pact to meet back there in 10 years and he will star in her then-completed screenplay.

We follow her through boyfriends and broken hearts, up and down career choices and her relationship with the one constant in her life, her best friend Fiona. And each year on Feb. 4 something serendipitous occurs, leading to the “plot twist” on Feb. 4, 2013, and yes, it’s a doozy.

This story is filled with insightful greeting card sentiments, fun references to Hollywood A-listers (the charity event at the Getty Center is especially hilarious/memorable 🤣) and wonderful tributes to beloved rom coms like Sleepless in Seattle...loved the nostalgia feel. But it’s the fierce bond between Livi and Fi that really shines here...a simply wonderful best buddy story that steals the show, and along with the sweet romance elements, they are perfect complements.

There is no harsh language and no sex (yes, you heard correctly), the story unfolds beautifully without any of it which is utterly refreshing.

This is the author’s 4th book, and I will definitely be backtracking. Highly recommend!

Many thanks to #NetGalley and #ThomasNelson for providing me the early ARC for review. The opinions are strictly my own.

Well. It sure was a book.

Plot Twist begins with Olivia Ross, aspiring screenwriter, on February 4th, 2003. She meets a handsome, funny man in a coffee shop who also happens to be an actor. They promise to meet again 10 years later, and they are going to make the movie that she writes. From there, we get to see Olivia every February 4th for the next ten years as she works on her screenplay, and we watch her relationships with Fiona, her best friend, and Liam, her...something evolve.

In the end, this was an interesting concept that was poorly executed. I found the writing to be clunky, and it was like the book couldn't figure out what it wanted to be. Did it want to be a romcom? Did it want to be a "slice of life" story? Did it want to be about the love between two best friends? Did it want to be about following your dreams? The problem wasn't even that it tried to do all of these, it's that it tried to do all of these half-baked. None of them were fully developed.

For example, if it wanted to focus on Olivia: her career, her self doubts, it could have done that. Olivia has some real self-deprecation going on. She constantly refers to herself as a "quirky side character" who feels insignificant compared to Fiona and Liam's "leading characters." But the book never dives deep enough into Olivia's issues to actually deal with them! We also learn that part of this mindset is also probably due to her "leading man," "spotlight-stealing" brother. This is a plot point that isn't introduced until half way through the book. And then once again, only really applies for one chapter, that one year. It isn't delved into later on. It also meant there was not nearly enough character development on Olivia's part, and that I just found her incredibly obnoxious. Like, dear god, it's supposed to have been 7 years and you're still whining about this?! And the book never had enough of a pushback against Olivia's toxic mindset.

Again, I come back to half-baked ideas. I love a good love story between two best friends book (In Five Years, Codename Verity), but Plot Twist just didn't go all the way. For one, I never understood why Olivia and Fiona were friends in the first place, besides the fact that they've just always been friends. Their relationship just wasn't that well written if you ask me.

And of course the romance wasn't that well written either. This is probably due to the set-up of the book. Most of her falling in love had to happen off-page, where she told us about it as we caught up on February 4th.

Finally, I didn't like all the movie stuff. The sheer amount of references was both overwhelming and unnecessary. And going back to why I don't like Olivia's character, for someone who is an aspiring screenwriter and should therefore love movies, she is incredibly picky about them, and most of the movies she talks about is her bashing them. It was just weird.

So there you go. Bad writing, bad themes, bad characters. Obviously some people enjoyed it, but I personally would not recommend it.

Bethany Turner's book, "Plot Twist" is a cute romantic comedy that features the same date year after year. On February 3, 2003, Olivia Ross has a meet-cute at a local coffee shop when a handsome stranger saves her from a meddling creep. Every year after that, bad luck seems to follow Olivia on that same date, most of the time revolving around her on-again/off-again boyfriend Liam. While I didn't understand the reason Olivia and Liam supposedly couldn't be together for so long, I enjoyed the book's ending and even the "plot twist!"

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I've read the other novels by Bethany Turner, including The Secret life of Sarah Hollenbeck, and have enjoyed them. I enjoyed this one too; it's a light-hearted if not-too-demanding read that employs the same device as One Day by David Nicholls, of each chapter taking place on the same day of the year, year after year. I enjoyed the friendship of the main character Olivia and her friend Fiona, even if their Hollywood lives felt removed from my reality.

A so-called clean novel but no elements of faith, although published by a Christian publisher.

**I was provided an ARC of Plot Twist by the publisher in exchange for my honest review**

Plot Twist by Bethany Turner follows the story of Olivia Ross as she navigates a series of extraordinary events that occur every year on the 4th of February, starting with her meeting an aspiring actor in a coffeeshop in 2003. After he 'rescues' her from the unwanted attentions of a would-be suitor, they make a pact - ten years from now, they'll meet at the same coffee shop. By then, he'll be a famous actor, she'll have a screenplay for him to act in. Over the next ten years, shown through Olivia's eyes on each February 4th, the reader is taken on her journey through love, loss, broken trust, jealousy, and finally acceptance and happiness.

While I finished the book, I had a hard time enjoying it. Despite the fact that the characters in the book begin at age 30 and end the book at age 40, it was surprising to see how much they acted like immature 20-somethings who were just barely learning how to function as adults. Much of the turmoil between the main character and her love interest came down to a very distinct lack of communication not only with each other, but with basically everyone in their lives, that was portrayed as a weird mix of deep-seated insecurity but also some self-imposed martyrdom. It didn't feel authentic or organic, and at times, actually felt toxic and co-dependent.

Do I think it was a bad book? No. I think some people will look at this book and find the "love overcomes any adversity" aspect of it heartwarming. I thought the book, despite its flaws, was well-written. Just not the book for me.

I, unfortunately, did not love this like I thought I would. Or even like most of my fellow reviewers. I kept thinking she was being ridiculous and then I thought I would be very annoyed if she ended up with The Guy. But, I loved the ending with Fi, The Kid, The Star, and The Boss! The twist was brilliant and I enjoyed it so much, it made up for a lot of the other angst and other rigamarole
