This book was not what I was expecting, honestly.
I liked the premise of meeting every year over ten years, but it made it hard to connect with who the characters were because we just don't get to spend enough time with them in the 364 days in between meetings. It actually ended up making getting through this book harder because I had a hard time liking them enough to care about them. I like knowing who they are in the days between. It's hard to build ten years in just ten days, and unfortunately I don't think the execution matched my expectations.
I really want to say that I like it and I'll be lying if say that I don't so yeah... This one is an unexpected enjoyable read.
I am a huge fan of YA contemporary and having reading this one reminds me of moments when I encounter something that is beyond my expectation.
This book is the ultimate will-they-won't-they / who's she going to pick. While personally that's not my cup of tea, I still flew through this book. The concept of checking on a character on the same day for 10 years was awesome! It went by so quickly because it's mostly dialogue and that the characters connect so well. If you're a Hallmark movie fan, this is a great pick.

A huge thanks to Thomas Nelson for my ARC. I enjoyed Hadley Beckett's Next Dish so was excited to dive into this one. This book tells the story of Olivia Ross who has a chance encounter with an actor who is swoon-worthy by the way on Feb 4.I absolutely enjoyed this book so much as it's plot was different and the characters just so lovable. Every new chapter began on Feb 4 *how cool is that*. This book is amazing and I absolutely recommend it .
Plot Twist drew me in with the title and the premise of a screenwriter writing a story and potentially ending up with the man of her dreams.
This is a journey of self-discovery and friendship. The plot was interesting, it felt more like women's fiction then romance for me though. I enjoyed Olivia and Fiona's support for each other and the encouragement that they gave each other.
Unfortunately, this book fell a little flat for me. I felt like I never got to know Olivia because I only got to see her for one day every year in the ten year span. I didn't enjoy the way that Olivia and Fiona lied to each other and interacted at times. Liam was my favorite character and I didn't even like him that much. I felt like he was never clear enough about his feelings and I wanted to scream at Olivia for keeping so much inside.
I’ll start off by saying that I actually read this book in 2 days which is fairly quick for me. It was an interesting book for sure with a premise that immediately grabbed my attention. Olivia Ross, our main character meets an actor and they agree to meet back at the coffee shop, in 10 years. The story spans over these 10 years, each chapter a different year on February 4th. I personally adored the humor and thought the characters were easy to like. However I have to say the plot felt a bit random at times and I found myself wanting to know the characters a bit more. That being said the book was definitely enjoyable with an unique story. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a funny and sweet read with hints of romance.
Thank you to Net Galley for giving me this book I’m exchange for my honest review!
This story started out fun and I loved the concept, but I wasn't into the execution. The romance just wasn't very believable and I had a hard time following why the main character acted the way that she did. It felt a bit random, which took me out of the story several times. I did really enjoy one of the side characters.
1.5 ⭐️
.5 only because I finished it. My gosh this book, I really, really didn’t enjoy it. The premise is really interesting, it spans ten years always landing on the same date. Liv meets a man one day in a cafe when she’s trying to write the next great screenplay. They have a meet cute and agree to meet at the same cafe in 10 years. We follow Liv for the next 10 years through finding out who the man is (a famous actor), heartbreak, friendships and career.
So, I don’t really understand the point of this story. Because of the way it’s written, hitting once every year I felt like I didn’t really get to know Liv, the main character. We just jumped in and out of her life and it felt choppy. The next complaint I have is what is this book even about? I thought for sure it would’ve been about these two people, but it’s not. We follow Liv’s life for 10 years through these trivial details and these messy relationships with her once boyfriend Liam and her best friend Fiona. Almost everything in this book was unbelievable, especially with Fiona, like what was her life? Also, this insane back and forth with Liam was SO annoying I couldn’t handle it. Like how was it him this whole time? So ridiculous. And she only goes in and out of realizing it? Through the whole book Liv goes in and out of caring about the actor she met and the entire situation, she makes questionable decisions regarding her job and she’s off at times with the geography and the dating, like she’s supposed to be 40!! And she was nothing together. That was annoying, and her fights with Fiona, her cheating with Liam more than once, and in the end finding out that the actor wasn’t even who she thought he was? A totally different person? Like I had to read the entire book for that ending? She ended up alone?? Gosh it was so frustrating. This was a total miss and pass for me. I enjoyed this book at the beginning; I really did. The premise was really fun and the way the book started was pretty good. The characters shared some really interesting banter but when we got to the middle of it, things got a bit strange. I began to feel like the characters' personality we had built up in the first part of the book had changed and they just felt shallow. Although, I will say that Plot Twist was still pretty funny and kinda cute and the premise was nice, but the characters became a little meh by the end of it.
But I'll recommend this book just for its humour. Because it is pretty funny.

I really wish I liked this more because the idea was interesting but it was poorly executed. Everything was random decisions and actions with no thought process or explanation. I felt no connection to the main character and found her VERY annoying. The character growth was all over the place and felt sloppy. The writing style was just cliffnote info dump of what happened February 4th of that year over 10 years, which made it impossible to feel like you’re actually reading a book. Also, this is marketed as a romance, but it had only had a small handful of romance scenes. I’d say it’s more about her friendship with Fiona and just a lot of shitty relationships.
Twisty | Charming | Fun
Plot Twist was a really cute story that spans over a decade, each chapter focusing on the crazy February 4ths that the main character, Olivia, experiences. I love Olivia’s friendship with Fiona and the twists and turns that the romantic relationships took in the book. Bethany also did an amazing job with the relevant pop culture references spanning the decade. I also love that the ending did not turn out how I thought it would. This is definitely a unique romance read and I couldn’t wait to find out what would actually happen at the end!

I wasn't really a fan of this book. The premise sounded great, but the actual writing was kind of boring. It was hard to feel sympathetic toward the main character since she created all her own problems. I was glad that by the end she got herself sorted out a bit better, but wish she had been a little more developed. Instead it felt like she constantly used the same movie tropes to describe her life, that she was a sidekick, not a lead, and Liam was now a leading man, so he couldn't possibly stick around. And Fiona was just this flat character who was lucky, everything good happens to her, and everything bad just rolls right off. Very unrealistic. If I didn't feel the need to finish the book in order to review, I probably would have given up half way through.
This was a cute, sweet and heartfelt story with a really interesting premise. One year, Olivia Ross bumps into a struggling actor in a coffee shop and they hit it off. They agree to meet back at that coffee shop in 10 years, by. which time Olivia will have written a screenplay for him. And this is the story of that encounter and the years following that. The chapters are each on that same date in periodic years.
I would say though, don't go into this expecting a super strong focus on the romance. Romance is definitely a part of the story and there is a buildup/exploration of a relationship in the story, but I'd say this skews more Women's Fiction - which is all good! There's also a really strong focus on friendship :))
On the point of the romance - I both was and wasn't expecting the way that it would turn out. It was pretty clear early on in the story what path it was going to take, but I didn't mind it. The romance itself turned out to be quite angsty which is always a bonus hehe.
Overall, this book was just okay for me. Perhaps it's because I'm not quite in the target age range or market. I never really felt like I connected with Olivia as a character. I kept feeling like throughout the story we were just <I> told </I> about what was going on or how she was feeling, and we didn't really get a strong sense of her emotions in a more organic way (if that makes sense). While I liked the concept of following what conspicuously happens on that same day each year, I wish we got <I> more </I> of Olivia, and the other characters in between.
Naturally there are some really fun coincidences and run-ins throughout the story - from meeting George Clooney to bumping into ex's and running after actors in the airport. They were quite fun to read!
Overall - pick this up if you're looking for a sweet, fun women's fiction romance....with a twist.
Throughout each February 4th chapter, Olivia struggles with the longest writer’s block I’ve ever read about. Sure, ten years are a lot, and I’ve read some reviews on Goodreads complaining about this, but let’s be fair: she only spends a year actually writing, the rest of it is pure procrastination. Only when she is ready to deal with her feelings she is finally able to write it, cue the happy ending in the script she writes.
For the most part of her journey she is accompanied by her best friend and roommate, Fiona. Let me point out how much I love their friendship and how their bond is able to resist the adversities they go through. Everyone should have a carefree and encouraging friend like Fiona in their life! You can sense how much they care for each other even when things get dire between them.
Another reason why I love this book is that it talks about screenwriting and Los Angeles. Both are obsessions of mine, to the point that I’ve dreamed of leaving everything behind to pursue a career there more than once. Since I’m not going to do that, not in this life anyway, I’m glad for anything that lets me live the dream vicariously.
And let me dream a bit about Liam here. He is sweet, caring, adorable, loyal. And he has a big heart. Perfect guy? Heck yes. I love how Bethany Turner wrote him, and how skilled she is at writing adorable characters in general. Her style is clean and simple and the pacing of this story is so amazing that it only took me four hours to read the whole book.
On with the cons. I have two, and both are overshadowed by the perfect ending, but I’m pointing them out anyway.
First, I’m not sure of Caleb’s purpose aside from encouraging Olivia to show up at the coffee shop for the ten years anniversary. By now you probably know how I feel about new characters introduced around the end of a story, and, since there already were several important ones, I wish one of them could have had his lines. I can’t help but feel Olivia’s brother would have been a great choice because of the relationship they have.
The next one is the revelation of who the mystery guy really is. His invisible presence in Olivia’s life feels too coincidental to me and I’m not sure I appreciated it. That said, Plot Twist was a great read. It was moving, it made me dream, and it lifted my mood for sure. My rating is 4.5/5 stars.
So sadly a DNF! This one had so much potential, and the idea is very reminiscent of Colleen Hoover's November 9. However, it's a big undertaking for a book to cover an entire decade, and unfortunately that's where this one fell short. Just when I would feel like I was getting a better look at Olivia's relationship with her true love (don't want to spoil it), we would be whisked away to the next year. It was rather jarring. So 3/5 stars for a good idea and engaging characters, just a miss on the execution!
I'm torn. I loved and hated this book. Loved as in LOVED and hated in a it's-not-all-bad sort of way.
As with other remarkable books by Bethany Turner, she sets up a wonderful story in the first chapter. We meet our heroine in a coffee shop (perfect setting) and she meets a guy (swoon.) But then we have to wait a whole year for the next big thing. Then, the next! And all the swoony-ness gets lost in all the waiting.
I think the plot device--having the story occur on the same date every year for ten years--sets the scene for an interesting story. Anticipation builds as the reader awaits the next encounter with the love interest, and he is dreamy. But it also requires the characters to recap the year on the "following" day.
Therein lies another problem. We spend too little time with the love interest. He's on the page and we long to have the two wake up and smell the coffee--ahem--reality of their situation, but before we get too comfortable he is gone again.
As for a romance, the story is mostly complete and inspires the reader to cheer for the hero and heroine. But as a romance, there just isn't enough romance. It is a sweet-clean read, but not a Christian romance at all. There is no faith mentioned, and the characters rely very heavily on fate or chance or some cosmic swirling something around the day in which the story evolves.
About midway through, the story strays from the love interest to friendship, and often feels like it is more about the two friends than any kind of romance. Which would be fine, if that is how the story is marketed. But the romance is secondary.
Turner has a fun, quirky voice and fills the pages with pop culture references that add depth to the story IF you know the references. If not, a lot of the message could be lost. A small complaint, probably from an editorial perspective, I did have a problem with the heroine being familiar with so many rom-coms, when she herself seemed to despise the genre.
Don't get me wrong. I binged this story. I enjoyed so much of it, I will likely read it again. But I also know I would skip over a lot of the friend stuff and get to the moments between the heroine and her love.
If there ever was a book I thought should be made into a movie, this is it! Oh. My. Goodness!
Did you hear me, Bethany . . . This needs to be a movie! I would pay bucks to see it over and over! This is such a fun and enjoyable book to read! I loved every moment I was in it; so much so, that I didn’t want to put it down! I read it all in one day and then was so upset that I was done, I actually re-read parts of it! There were a few deep relational parts, but oh the fun parts were so worth reading again and again! They were just so quirky and refreshing. Which actually made the whole book flow so smoothly.
Bethany Turner has become one of my MOST favorite authors to read if I’m having a bad day because I know I will laugh, cry, sigh, moan, giggle, and swoon! Her characters are so enjoyable to get to know. I truly feel I know them and want them to be my friends.
In this story, we are taken through time. Each chapter is a new year on the same date, or around the same date. (It’s sort of like the Groundhog’s Day movie, but not!)
I love how the author brings in SO many familiar movies, actors, and songs. It brings the story to life.
Bethany Turner has a very fascinating way of writing! The voices of each character are delightful and intriguing. She also threw in some twists I didn’t see coming.
This book is full of humor, drama, and awkwardness, as well as a sweet romance. It will make you laugh out loud. I found myself having to try and be quiet while reading it late at night, so I wouldn't wake my husband. There are also many tender moments between all the characters.
I loved this story and will recommend it to anyone and everyone who wants a fun book to read.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was really looking forward to this book since I really enjoyed Hadley Beckett's Next Dish, but this one ended up being an average read for me. I did enjoy the dialogue and the banter between characters. I appreciated the friendship Olivia and Fiona had. I just felt that the span of a decade was a bit too long and drawn out for me, personally. Overall though, if you want a clean (not Christian) rom-com, you may enjoy this book.
I didn't want this book to end! I felt these were people I could be friends with!
First time I've read Bethany Turner but definitely looking forward to finding more books from Amazon
I really enjoyed this book. It references Sleepless in Seattle and An Affair to Remember and those were two I thought of as I read this as well.
This story takes place over the course of 10 years - each section is a year later on the same "ironic" date. I love the idea that you could meet the love of your life in the same cafe 10 years after a fated promise.
The book also focuses on a female friendship. It is funny, lots of pop culture references and heartwarming all rolled into one. This is not a steamy book and it didn't need to be. And yes! There is a fun plot twist. I will look for more of this author's books!
Put this one in your summer beach bag!
