This was definitely much different than any book I've read before. Each chapter takes place exactly one year after the next - always on February 4th. We go from 2003 to 2013 and see the wild things that happen to Olivia Ross on that day.
I think that because of the format we don't get the character development that we might be used to. I didn't quite connect with Olivia as much as I might have in a normal book, but she did endear herself to me. She's a likable character with struggles that I could relate to.
My favorite thing was her friendship with Fiona. It's exactly the kind of thing I dream about!!! They fight for each other, even when they fight with each other.
The ending is exactly what I wanted, though I do wish it hadn't taken 10 years for the HEA to happen. And that plot twist!!!! I did NOT see that coming.
I laughed out loud several times, which is always a good sign. There were a lot of pop culture references I did not get but also some that I did and I recognized most of the famous people. I like how they were just regular people that the characters interacted with.
This book was so much fun! I was able to read it in a few hours and enjoyed the plot with the plot twist. It was a very cute rom com that was engaging until the end. Even though the book was only one day each year I still got a good gist of their lives
Thanks to Thomas Nelson & NetGalley for a copy to honestly review.
Plot Twist is a Where Rainbows End (Love, Rosie) type story where characters keep twisting through each other's lives for over a decade. Olivia is a self-proclaimed supporting character trying to write a screenplay while currently employed at a greeting card company. One crazy day on February 4th, 2003, she has a serendipitous encounter with a sexy Irish actor (classic leading man material) and they make a deal: in ten years, they will meet back at this coffee shop on the same day and he will act in the screenplay she writes. Over the course of ten years, each February 4th is a little bit *ironic.* Crazy things just seem to happen, both good and bad. This seems like a perfect love story of Olivia and this mysterious man, but it’s truly not. This is more so about the friendship and connection she has with her best friend, Fiona, and an ex-boyfriend turned friend, Liam.
This is a book that isn’t perfect, but I really enjoyed it. I would say the first half felt very rushed—as soon as I started getting invested in the story, it would suddenly flip forward to the next February 4th. I would have liked to see it a bit more fleshed out. As I mentioned previously, this book definitely makes you think Olivia has to end up with the mysterious guy, but that isn’t the premise at all. The true love interest is Liam. I wish more would have been done to make that clear. Overall, the second half made me rate this book higher (technically a 3.5 but will round up to a 4). I really liked Olivia finding out she is a leading lady, and I love the twist in the end.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
This book takes place over a ten year period. The book is sectioned by the passage of a year. It is set in reality but I felt that some of the events in this book were not that realistic. While this is marketed as a romance, I felt that the relationship between the hero and her best friend was in many ways, the predominant relationship.
The writing style was very readable and if you are looking for a clean read for the beach - that's what I'd recommend this book for. While this is called Christian Fiction, this was not mentioned in the book. I'd say that it was more billed that way as it was a clean read.
I got this book free for an honest review. This was an okay book and I kept reading to find out what happened. I guess I just didn't feel invested enough in the characters unfortunately - However, I do recommend giving it a go as you may see this differently from me.
This was a fun, quick read! I got attached to the main character and wanted to find out what happened to her in the end. However, I'm not sure if marketing this book as a romance does it a bit of a disservice (it's hard to explain why without spoilers, so I'm being careful here). It reminded me of a book like The Switch by Beth O'Leary in the sense that that was marketed as romance, but more about the relationship between the main character and her grandmother, Plot Twist also felt like it was more about the relationship between the main character and her best friend.
I'd definitely be interested in reading more of Bethany Turner's books in the future!
This is a slow-burn, surprising and easy-going story wrote in a unique way. Bethany did an amazing job with this book. and her sweet, lovable but real characters. I really loved this book and I hope to read more from her.
Super enjoyable story by Bethany Turner!
I loved the super cute meet-cute in Plot Twist on February 4th. Greeting card writer Olivia Ross is working at a coffee shop and detests being hit on. She really is there to work. and doesn't want to be distracted. When not writing greeting cards, she is working on her perpetually unfinished screenplay. A cute and funny man with an accent and kind eyes helps her escape unwanted attention by his witty banter. They agree to meet back at the coffee shop in ten years, he an actor will have an armload of Academy Awards and she will have a screenplay for him. They never do exchange names. Every February 4th for 10 years is the anchor of the story. Plenty of twists and turns, some very self-sacrificing love and friendship, and the perfect ending!
I highly recommend Plot Twist for fans of romantic comedy. Bethany Turner does it SO well!
Thank you to Net Galley for the opportunity to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
Fans of Josie Silver's One Day in December and Colleen Hoover's November 9 are sure to love this fated lovers/missed chances romance. And if you're a movie buff, you're bound to like this even more. 3.5 stars
I was so anxious to read this book. I wanted to savor and enjoy every minute. So when I read the first scene in the coffee shop, I was intrigued, where was this plot twist going??
But then, I got lost. And until about a third of the way into the book, I was lost, I didn’t think I could finish it. I just couldn’t follow at all!!
But then I gave it one more chance and whoa!!! I was totally in, couldn’t be pulled away! From then on, the plot twists and turns - and what angst! SO glad I kept reading!
This book has to be the top contender in the anticipation index. The book journeys over 10 years, so the anticipation builds over all this time. And it all revolves around Feb. 4, ironic circumstances, fate, love and hope (and kisses).
The greeting card entries were touching and spot on. And I loved the ending!
I may go back and reread this book, to learn now what I may have missed before.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book. The opinions are entirely my own.
Olivia Ross meets a handsome charming stranger in a coffee shop and they agree to meet again in the same place ten years later....
Cue... chain of events connected to the first meeting and all leading up to the final one. The book moves through each year of Olivia's life and the extraordinary coincidences which happen on the same day every year, The ending is great, living up to the title of 'plot twist'! This book gave me 'This time next year' feels; feel good, fun and light-hearted romance with some 30-something soul searching thrown in.
The middle of the book got a little slow for me, some events seemed a bit far fetched and perhaps stretched out to fill a few pages but I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for a light-hearted fun read... a book for reading on a beach I think!
On February 4, 2003, Olivia Ross meets a handsome actor in a coffee shop. They discuss their life goals and make a pact to meet up in 10 years (at which point Olivia will have finished the screenplay she can't stop working on, and he will take a part in it). From there, we catch up with Olivia on February 4 for the next 10 years; over that time she becomes convinced that her mystery actor was Hamish McDougal, who has since skyrocketed to fame.
I thought this was a fun, fresh take on the "one day a year" story, though I was occasionally frustrated with Olivia's choices over her 10 years. The ending did have a titular Plot Twist that I did not see coming (and lately I've been able to predict many of them!) Overall, an enjoyable read, though it does require some suspension of belief, as the things that happen to or involving Olivia on February 4 are often coincidental and not-quite believable.
I was so excited hearing Bethany Turner had a new book coming out. The cover looked awesome. The blurb sounded cute, exciting, and very unique.
From the first page, Bethany’s quick, witty voice shines. Her voice itself deserves five stars. So fun and one of a kind.
The story, however, was a bit confusing. It sounded great, in theory, following a character on the same day for ten years. It was hard to follow and felt strange. The events seemed unbelievable.
The book was just alright, but I’ll definitely pick up Bethany’s future books.
I absolutely loved this book. I cannot wait to share my review with my followers! I loved that this book gave me characters I could relate to, a plot I could devour, and a satisfactory ending. I think I read this book in one setting, and it's because I just couldn't get enough of the main characters. I really enjoyed the journeys of the main character, and I especially enjoyed the evolution the main character underwent. I thought the writing and the plot was developed very organically, and that the development really gave the reader something to look forward to. I really felt like this was a feel good book, and I really liked that the story played out over a decade. Overall, just a really fun, relatable story with awesome characters.
Ok, so I used to very much be a fantasy only reader, but then I started dipping my toes into a bit more romance, and I won't lie the more "Rom-Com" type of books are one of my favorites in the Romance genre. I was so excited when I got approved for this ARC via NetGalley, because this SCREAMED Rom-Com, and it delivered for the most part.
So I'd like to start with talking about Olivia. I think she's a phenomenal character...at times. As a thirty year old woman who has self esteem issues and issues in pursuing life goals that seem like a pipe dream, she really resonated with me. But she seemed to stay that way over the course of ten years, which first off, I hope that those life hurdles don't stay with me that long but I feel like we didn't get enough outside of just February 4th of each year to really see her in any other light, so I feel like she had trouble developing as a person until towards the end of the book. But at the same time I understand the choice to really hone in on just February 4th.
Even though we got one date over the span on ten years to take a peek into Olivia, Fiona, and Liam's life, I feel like it did a great job of keeping the plot moving and being a very unique way to setup a book. I don't think I ever read a book the centered on one day a year for a span of ten years.
Now let me take a minute to talk about well...the romance or love journey. I figured Olivia was going to go on a twisty journey from the beginning (title of the book giving that a way a bit) but I didn't expect there to be this weird love triangle. Don't get me wrong, I literally felt my heart pounding when the whole coming back from Italy and THE DINNER, oh my god, I felt it. It was terrible, but it just felt a bit that the whole love triangle kind of went on for a really really long time, which I felt like was a tad much.
I found the ending to be a bit predictable, especially towards the end, I figured the man she met wasn't going to be Hamish but props for making him someone I really didn't expect, and it totally bummed me out that even HE wasn't the final, but I could tell who was Olivia's OTP by like half way through the book, and it made sense, and just seeing that journey, for me was pretty enjoyable.
I had a really good time with this read, although one would probably call it a very slow burn, it's a clean and fun romance, that I actually flew through. Would I call it an all time fave? Not necessarily but if I was looking for something to entertain me and really just give me an enjoyable quick read, yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
Set over ten years, on the 4th February, the book follows Olivia, a struggling screenwriter.
Some surprises I was not expecting towards the end of the book, although Olivia did annoy me at times.
I really liked this book. It was a fun escape. It had some twists & turns that I wasn’t expecting. It was a quick, fun read.
All's well that ends well. I really liked the book but there were several times I really wanted to throw it across the room. This book is a roller coaster of emotions. Olivia, Fiona and Liam are all great characters. They are all lovable in different ways and frustrating in different ways. The friendships are unbreakably strong.
I’ve had a bit of a journey with Bethany Turner’s books. When her first book released I passed on the chance to review it, not sure if I really wanted to know The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck. But the rave reviews were coming in so I eventually bought it and thoroughly enjoyed it! Then I was wooed by the plot and cover of Wooing Cadie Macaffery and I liked it even more than the first book! Then came Hadley Beckett’s Next Dish which was absolutely delicious and her best yet! So to say I was excited for this book and hoping it was going to be even better is an understatement, but, Plot Twist, this book really missed the mark for me.
The unique premise sounded really intriguing at the start but in reality having a book take place over a decade yet only getting to see a single day of each year got old rather quickly. It was like a Groundhog Day but instead of the exact same day it was just a day once a year that you spent waiting for a major shoe to drop and blow everything up. It was kind of interesting though to see just how much life could change in 365 days though!
I didn’t have any strong opinions about the heroine either way, she had her good moments and bad, though she did seem kind of overly focused on herself and how circumstances would affect her which didn’t endear her to me.
There seemed to be a lot of options for who would play the “hero” of this book and sadly I really wasn’t a fan of any of them. For the first few years I was rooting for one guy but then he made some choices I didn’t love (I have a bone to pick with guys who have a girlfriend but then kiss girls who are not said girlfriend) and he lost my vote pretty quickly.
The author did keep you guessing throughout as to how things would end, was it gonna be this guy, or that guy, or no guy?
All in all while this may be the lighthearted fun book some people are looking for and will love, it just wasn’t for me at all.
February 4, 2003 should be any other day for Olivia Ross, a greeting card writer who is struggling to complete her own screen play.
But when she enters an LA coffee shops she has a "near magic" encounter with a struggling actor and they make a spontaneous pact: in ten years time they'll return to the same coffee house to make a film together.
Over the next ten years Olivia finds February 4 is an exceptional day, full of weird coincidences and ironies.
I was drawn to this plot because it felt like an LA version of One Day, one of my all-time favourite novels, but the whole thing just fell flat for me. I didn't really connect with any of the main characters and I didn't root at all for the main love interest (which in a rom-com type novel is a bit of a shame). It also tried to shoehorn a subplot of the power female friendship but it felt a bit halfhearted.
I know most books require a certain level of suspension of disbelief, but for one supposedly set in the real world, it had far too many coincidence to feel like it flowed properly. A solidly average read, the writing style was comfortable and some people might enjoy the cutesy plot, but for me it just didn't work.

Plot Twist is the newest by Bethany Turner, Christian rom-com author queen. Olivia Ross is a greeting card writer who hopes to become a screenwriting. On February 4th, 2003, she meets a man who rescues her from another man hitting on her at a coffeehouse. They agree to meet in another ten years when he will star in her screenplay. For the next ten years, we see how Olivia’s life is every year as she experiences up in downs in love and in her relationship with her best friend, Fiona.
Plot Twist a great idea for a book and has many of Bethany Turner’s fun batter conversations. I enjoyed the first part of the book, but was frustrated at some of the choices made by the characters. I ended up feeling bad for Olivia that it took her ten long years to get together with her true love. I also felt that the book was missing what Bethany Turner has done well in other books-bringing life changing faith to a main character.
Overall, I would recommend Plot Twist as a fun read and I did think that only Bethany Turner could write a book in such a unique format and leave the reader guessing who Olivia would end up with as her love.
I received a complimentary copy of Plot Twist thanks to Thomas Nelson, but all opinions are my own.
