The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson is a beautifully written and unique dystopian novel set in a futuristic Brazil. The story follows June, a young artist, and Enki, a boy chosen to be the "Summer King," in a society where power dynamics are complex and layered. The world-building is vivid and full of cultural depth, with themes of love, sacrifice, and rebellion woven throughout. The romance and political intrigue keep the plot moving, though the pacing can be slow at times. A must-read for those who enjoy thought-provoking and richly imaginative sci-fi!
I'm not really sure how to review this as I had to DNF it. I lost interest about half way through and that was me pushing myself through it. A story has to grab me off the bat. This didn't do that for me I'm afraid.
Apparently I just never sent feedback here, even though I gushed about this book fucking everywhere and immediately walked into a bookstore to buy a print copy about ten minutes after I finished the e-galley. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13453104-the-summer-prince?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=nII3ScwYND&rank=1
