A fun read but certainly not my favorite from the author. I think one of the main reasons why I didn't love this much as some of her other novels is because the heroine really wasn't my cup of tea. No matter, I plan to continue reading her novels because they are so much fun!
This is my first book by Elizabeth Hayley and I enjoyed it!!! A cute romantic comedy between Gabe and Rachel!!! Read and enjoy!!!
Gabriel and Rachel meet up unexpectedly and some old feelings have been rekindled but both hold secrets that threaten to derail them before they can even start. While I enjoyed the banter and the obvious chemistry between the main characters and I generally enjoy Elizabeth Hayley books, this one left me sighing and perhaps a bit confused. I guess I didn't get the big secret. I get exclusivity, I do but it seemed way more cloak and dagger-ish than it truly needed to be in my opinion.3.5 stars
The One-Night Stand is an easy-to-read sports romance. It has the drama, secrets, and lies that I don't always get in a sports romance. Always enjoy reading this fun writing duo.
Gabriel is a recently retired MLB player and looking to move on from that career. And he does that quite quickly when he takes over the exclusive Players Club. He is used to being in the limelight but this is something different. He gets wrapped up in scandal and drama. He needs something or someone to get his mind off some of his troubles. And he finds that in an old friend named Rachel.
Rachel is an investigative sports journalist. She is waiting for her one big break and hopes that it comes soon. When she sees Gabe again at a party, the sparks are still there. Their chemistry is fiery and hard to resist. A one-night stand might be the best thing for both of them right now.
But that one-night stand turns into many more. They both go into this relationship with ulterior motives so you can expect things to get tricky after they start to catch feelings.
I give The One-Night Stand 4 stars. It's a cute sports romance that had just the right amount of drama and intrigue. Elizabeth Hayley bring the sexy and witty banter that is their signature.
I am very hesitant to like this book because while the plot was interesting, the protagonist was morally... not right and her motives were not pure and didn’t end up being pure. I typically like a good sports troupe (and second chances too) but this was not a book that leaves you satisfied at the end.
The One-Night Stand was a good read by Elizabeth Hayley. Gabriel Torres was a Major League Baseball player who just wanted a simple and quiet life after baseball. But he would find himself in the middle of scandal and drama after starting to run the exclusive Players Club. Rachel Adler crashed back into his life and he welcomed any distraction. Rachel wants to be one of the top sports journalists in the country. All Rachel wanted was a one night Stand and she thought Gabriel was a good partner. But Rachel gets a tip that ties Gabe to the biggest story in sports history. I enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more by the author.
This book was a lot cuter than I anticipated. Rachel, a spots writer for a big New York sports magazine, has been chasing an illusive story for years. So when the story leads her back to an old crush Gabe, the lines start to blur between a relationship and a source for the story. What starts as a one night stand turns into true feelings and when he becomes the main character of her story she quickly realizes that she can't have her relationship and her story.
Overall I thought this was cute. I love a sports romance. I thought it was well written, and the characters were really likeable. In all honest, I didn't think One Night Stand was an appropriate name for the book. It was such a small part of the story that was pretty insignificant. Overall 4 stars!
This was an interesting take on what professional athletes do after the game has ended. Meeting Rachel and Gabe was an absolute pleasure. Sure there are some things that went down that I wasn't happy about but then it wouldn't be a great story without some conflict.
Rachel is a reporter working on a story that she's been trying to find the truth about for most of her career. Gabe is a retired baseball player and they once new each other way back in college so a chance meeting was inevitable. Gabe always thought of her as the one he wanted but got away.
Seeing their relationship blossom throughout the book was sweet. You could feel through the pages how much they really did adore each other. But things progressed slightly in the wrong direction for them. Without giving too much away the main characters really did go through a tough times and broken trusts but it's releasing them and forgiveness that matters.
Things happen for a reason, sometimes it's the getting there that makes your relationship stronger in the end.
This was a good quick read.
Reading this gave me the feeling I was reading a Wattpad fanfiction. This is not necessarily a bad thing! It actually made me feel a tad nostalgic, it is that feel of quick, too quick for my liking, unrealistic romance where the chapters feel super short and so many things happen that it's a lot to keep up with. I felt like sometimes the romance seemed to go a bit from intimate scene to intimate scene, which I don't read romance for.
On the other hand, it's sometimes nice to escape in the fluff romance with someone you remember from college who now is quite famous. Add in a twinkle of drama and boom, you are easily captivated by it. I think there are a lot more romances with fluff I feel more captivated by, but it was overall a decent read!
Due to illness review will be short. In a nutshell this book is worth reading. If you want a fun light read that had it's complicities. You can take my review as you will or you can always form you're own opinion by reading it anyway!
The One-Night stand is a very fun and light hearted second chance romance. Gabe and Rachel first meet each other in college and then they end up meeting again a few years later. When they see each other again, they find that they still have the same undeniable chemistry they did in college, resulting in a in a one-night stand. Rachel and Gabe have incredible chemistry from the start and I loved that both their characters were layered and complex, as well as being fun and steamy together! I really enjoyed the banter between Rachel and Gabe and their strong attraction for one another.
The book was good Gabe and Rachel had started the relationship lying to each other you knew the truth would come out and blow up in there faces. I am glad that after there fight the got back together and started a real relationship with no lies and lots of Chemistry
The book has a happy ending
Rachel Adler is a sports journalists at All Access Sports magazine. Rachel has been trying to break a big story she heard rumblings about involving a secret, exclusive club for athletes. When Rachel goes to the Super Bowl to look into some leads, she runs into Gabriel Torres, a guy she knew in college, and a retired professional baseball player. After a fun night together, Rachel heads back to her life in New York. When new rumors pop up in Philadelphia, PA about the exclusive club, Rachel's boss tells her to pack her bags because she is going to spend a month there trying to bust open the story. Imagine Rachel's surprise when she runs into Gabe again. Thinking Gabe may be a great source for some type of lead, Rachel starts spending a lot of time with him. Of course the more time these two spend together, the deeper their feelings become until Rachel starts to realize that she is falling in love with Gabe. When Rachel starts to believe that Gabe may be more involved with this club that she ever expected, she has to decide if blowing this story wide open is more important than her relationship with Gabe. It will take a lot of soul searching for both Rachel and Gabe to realize what they really want for their happy ending, but in the end they both find their perfect ending.
I really enjoyed this story. Rachel was such a fun, laid back female. I loved how much into sports she was. Gabe seemed like a sweet guy who was a little lost in his life without baseball. Together they gave each other the missing piece that was missing from their lives. Overall this was a fun and enjoyable story.
This book was not for me! The writing left much to be desired. I thought it was one dimensional and often fell flat.
Although I liked Gabe’s character and some of the witty banter, I wasn’t invested in his relationship with Rachel. Though this was a second chance at love story, one of my favourite tropes, I found that I didn’t care much about what happened to either of them. And the whole “secret sports club” thing was weird for me.
Overall, not my cup of tea but I seem to be in the minority!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
3/5 stars
💚 Thanks to Netgalley for providing an e-arc!
Iiiiii fuuckiiiing hated some of the characters but thank good the writing was fine
Gabe and Rachel have a one night stand that leads to forever. However, along the way, they learn that hiding secrets from each other can easily tear them apart.
Gabe and Rachel knew each other in college and they meet again a few years later, when Rachel is visiting Philadelphia. When they see each other, they discover they still have the same sizzling chemistry they did in college. Gabe is now retired after having a successful professional baseball career. Rachel is an investigative sports journalist trying to make a name for herself.
Gabe and Rachel make a great couple, but they have to overcome a few obstacles in their way. Gabe and Rachel are attracted to each other, but they have secrets they are hiding from each other, which could hurt their developing relationship.
I liked Gabe. He is a jokester but he also has a serious side and he is protective of the people he cares about. Although Gabe wants more with Rachel, he isn’t sure how to show her how much he cares. I loved all the funny banter between Gabe and his friends; they had me laughing out loud many times. Rachel is a hard worker and a great journalist, but she has to decide what is truly important. The One Night Stand is a wonderful combination of sweet, funny and intriguing.
This is my first book by Elizabeth Hayley and the synopsis sounded so good, I couldn't wait to start it.
Unfortunately I felt like something was missing from this story. I didn't really feel a connection between the main characters and maybe that is why I didn't connect to the story.
I will still look for other books from this author.
achel Adler has been chasing a ghost of a story for years. A secret Club for athletes. In her world as a sportswriter, the rumors of this “Club’s” existence have circulated but no one can confirm the existence of it or who runs it. When she finally gets a bona-fide, legit tip that the club does exist and where it could be located, she heads to Philly to start pounding the pavement. Once in Philly she runs into Gabe Torres, an old college friend and as of a month ago, a one-night stand. To cover the true reason she is there, Rachel offers Gabe an opportunity to be the subject of an article on retired athletes. As she spends time with Gabe, she starts to realize that they are actually pretty compatible, and they decide to give a relationship. When Rachel stumbles upon some information that puts Gabe closer to the real reason she is there. She now has to decide which is more important, her relationship with Gabe, or writing the article that could make her career.
The plot for this story was really good, but unfortunately this book didn’t work for me. It took me quite a bit of time to get through it. It just didn’t grab me the way I thought it would and there were moments that completely lost me. While I liked the characters, I never made and actual connection to this book. There was something that never quite clicked for me.
Rachel and Gabe have known each other since college. They bump into each other at a Superbowl party where Gabe, retired from the sport of baseball, is attending as a guest and Rachel is there as a reporter for All Access Sports. Sparks fly and they spend the night together. Fast forward and Rachel is moving temporarily to Philadelphia to cover a story that she has been investigating for several years. With proof in hand, she hopes to find all the information she needs to publish a story that would put her on the map. Rachel bumps into Gabe again on her first night in the city. They begin to hang out and eventually declare themselves a couple. Rachel and Gabe are having such a good time together, getting to know each other and falling for each other. What they each know and have not mentioned to the other is that they have secrets that must be kept private. These secrets will have an effect on their relationship if they are found out by the other.
Gabe and Rachel must navigate work, friendships, and a relationship in The One-Night Stand.
The One-Night Stand is a beautifully written romance that is a must-read.
Unfortunately things started bad, and didn’t get better. The first few chapters were utterly terrible so I looked it up to see if this was the authors debut. Nope – surprisingly they had another 30 books to their name. I wanted to give up on it, but after consultation with my friend who also uses NetGalley, it can count against you to not finish a book. So here is my book review, The One-Night Stand: She finished it against all odds and wishes she never tried.
The story is about a journalist, Rachel, and a retired baseball player, Gabe. They were once involved back in college but haven’t seen each other since until Rachel’s job sends her to Philly, where Gabe lives, to investigate a *SuPeR SeCrEt SpOrTs CLuB*, a story she’s been trying to crack her entire career. Little does she know, Gabe runs this *SuPeR SeCrEt SpOrTs CLuB*, where players go to unwind, out of the prying eyes of the public.
There’s really nothing redeeming about the book, so here is my list of why I did not enjoy The One-Night Stand:
1. There is no word building
Everything and everyone is flat and one dimensional. It’s like the authors (yes, Elizabeth Hayley is two people writing under one name) forgot that adjectives exist and can be used to spice things up a little. Where as another author might say “She walked into the room, light streaming through the floor to ceiling windows. Her eyes glanced at her old wooden desk, spying a messy pile of papers on its dusty surface.”, Elizabeth Hayley would say “She walked into the room and looked at some papers on her desk.” I am being a bit hyperbolic here but it really feels that wooden and lifeless.
2. The banter (and chemistry) between Rachel and Gabe is lackluster and forced.
Right, so here’s an example of the “banter” that is peppered through this entire book:
“Go big or go home,” Gabe said.
“Did you just make that up?” Rachel teased. “That’s a clever saying.”
“Shut up,” he joked.
That is probably one of the “wittier” attempts in the book.
As for the chemistry, the start of their relationship was basically (please indulge my artistic licence here):
“Hey I like you and I find you attractive.”
“Wow, I also like you and also find you attractive.”
“Will you be my girlfriend?”
“Are you still a HOT SHOT PLAYBOY?”
“No my love, I am reformed for YOU!!1!111!”
“Well okay then. I am your girlfriend.”
3. The spicy bits (no fade to black here but it may as well have been).
There are a few sex scenes dotted throughout the book, and while I would give the author(s) a bronze “I guess you tried” star, they were much in the same vein as the rest of the book. Let’s just say it left you feeling akin to having a tryst with a very unsatisfying lover.
Further investigation..
After a bit of googling, I realised that this book is actually just a re-released copy of an older story of theirs – now with a much nicer cover. It was also the third book in a series, which maybe explains why some things felt like they were something that should have been explained already. It doesn’t seem like they’ve released this version as part of that series. I don’t know if they changed anything in the book or tried to polish it up a little, but if they did I would hate to think what it was like originally.
Conclusion?
This gets a big ol’ kiwi yeah NAH from me. It would take a lot of convincing for me to read anything else from their authors in future, but I do wish them all the best and hope they find their stride. However, after 30 books published so far, I don’t think it’s gonna happen.
