A suspenseful Regency romance, this novel also has a mystery that is uncovered. Viola is a playwright and although well disguised, she is attacked late one night. Coming to the rescue, Dr Duncan Neilson manages to extricate her, albeit he is rather worse for wear. When Viola is marched into The Black Widow’s parlour by her father, ostensibly to find her a suitable match, she is surprised when her rescuer is escorted into the room. Viola understands her father well enough to know that he is prevaricating and would like to know why he is pushing marriage. Duncan, on the other hand, is not entirely unhappy about the choices being made for him, especially when he realises that Viola is the woman he had rescued from thugs. When the past comes back to visit Viola’s father, he is forced to request Duncan to rescue Viola once again, whilst he goes about dealing with the more nefarious elements of the London underworld. I enjoyed this novel, although I was left with a number of questions. Viola is an unconventional Regency young woman, and her wit and intelligence win Duncan over. He, on the other hand, is an imperfect hero but nevertheless tries to do the right thing. I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
An unconventional woman crosses paths with a doctor who makes a deal with the Black Widow of Whitehall. Viola is woman that wants more out of life, which involves writing plays and dressing as a man when necessary. She runs into Duncan, a man who assists her in the current predicament she finds herself in. Duncan has his own skeletons and is attracted to Viola. When they discover that the Black Widow has matched them, they reluctantly agree, but an old enemy intervenes. Viola is no damsel in distress and Duncan is no Prince Charming, but they will need each other to get out of trouble that has come their way.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A sweet seasonal tale of the Lyon and her matchmaking.
A doctor meets a writer after she’s attacked and takes her to Mrs Dove Lyon .
Unbeknownst to them both she’s already matching them in her mind and her plans are perfect.
This is a sweet tale of romance and the beginnings of love that are helped along by her father and Bessie .
It’s enjoyable and entertaining.
