This book wasn`t for me. I felt bored most of the time, the characters didn`t have chemistry and the rest felt meh.
Dark of Knight (Gentlemen of Knights #4). By Elizabeth Johns. 2021. Dragonblade Publishing, Inc.
This was my first time reading Elizabeth Johns. Dark of Knight was an okay read. It wasn’t really exiting or romantic, but I would try another book by her. I can appreciate the more somber aspects of the story as it is set during the war against Napoleon, and Wellington and England’s Spanish allies play complex parts in the story. But Catalina fell a bit flat for me and I actually didn’t care for her intervention in a revenge plot. Since there had not been any action to try soldiers for the war crimes that spurred the retaliation, I would have rather seen the revenge plot come to fruition.
This was such an awesome read. The story was very well-written and contained drama, suspense and a few twists, in addition to some sweet romance and a wonderful blend of humor. The characters were so enjoyable, even the sub characters, and were well-developed, interesting and very likable. I was sorry when the story ended and I cannot wait until the next one! Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed this one. Felix Knight is a committed soldier, and secret agent for the crown. He is charismatic, committed and isn't easily fooled. When on the hunt for a traitor, he meets the beautiful Lady Catalina Mendoza surrounded by suitors, he tries to dismiss her as a frivolous social butterfly. When he realises there is much more to Catalina than he imagines, and he catches her spying too, the plot thickens. As a result they have to join forces to find the traitor, and are thrown together in a succession of situations that call for them to spend time together in close quarters. Felix finds himself re-assessing his desire to stay footloose and fancy free, focusing on his job.
Catalina was a delight, capable, brave and not capricious and silly as sometimes a character like this can be written. the adventure they had reminded me a little of some of Carla Kelly's regencies
I really enjoyed it.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
Elizabeth John’s has a finesse with her writing that sets her apart from others. Her stories are engaging and they are written in British English, adding to their historic feel. Rowley swore he would never marry—yet finds himself unable to resist offering for Emma. Their sweet love story is another winner.
3.75 stars
This was so unexpectedly good. I was drawn by the gorgeous cover but the story was equally amazing.
I liked the Suspense and the romance here. Both Felix and Catalina were great main characters and their relationship building was really really good!
Overall a great book.
Beware of mentions of r*pe and murder if you're trigger by those subjects.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Felix Knight is a spy for wellington. Lady Catalina Mendoza is the daughter of influential General Mendoza of the Spanish army who is allies with the british. Little does Felix know that lady catalina is a spy like him. They have to try to find a spy in their bunch together and end up falling for each other
Another amazing adventure in the wonderful series of the Knight family.
Once upon a time there was a handsome spy, and on his journey he met another spy, this one beautiful and Spanish! Fortunately they were working on the same side but decided to join forces to get the information they needed.
Taking place in Spain as the British army is preparing to go to war with Napoleon, Felix finds himself in the company of Catalina Mendoza and the adventure begins!
Spies, traitors, danger and just a great story! I highly recommend!
Another thrilling installment by Elizabeth Johns in the Gentleman of Knights series. I enjoy a good spy story, and this offers that in spades. Felix and Catalina are great together and spin a captivating tale about learning to trust against their better judgement. Suspense, mystery and romance come together to weave a great love story. I love the inclusion of other Knight brothers, but you can enjoy this one all on its own without reading the others first.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own, freely given.
Major Lord Felix Knight is in Spain with the British Army getting ready to battle with Napoleon. Felix is a spy and trying to locate the traitor leaking information to the enemy.
Lady Catalina Mendoza is the daughter of the Spanish Commander, and a spy working for her father also trying to locate the traitor.
Felix and Catalina not only find themselves working together, they also find themselves saving each others lives.
I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and ended up reading the story through without stopping.
Two Spies in the Night
They are on the same mission, but will they work together to bring down the spy they are seeking? The smell of roses gave her away, and her competitor follows the scent. Theirs starts as a competition, but will it end in love? After all, they are after the same traitor. Who will it be? Is it her father? Is it someone in the English army? You will have to read Catalina and Felix’s love story to find the answers you seek. If you like Regency romance with suspense and espionage, you might enjoy this story.
Dark of Knight is Felix’s story in the Gentlemen of Knight series.
Felix is determined that he will never be leg shackled. As a spy, women tend to be more of a distraction than anything.
Then he meets Catalina. Whom he vastly underestimates and assumes is just playing spy. Until circumstances throw them together and they must work together to uncover an act of treason amidst a war.
This is a story full of action. Felix and Catalina work together, learning to trust one another. I loved how they were not shy with each other. There was no tiptoeing about how they felt. When you are in the heat of a war, I imagine one wouldn’t have time to worry about the little things, you would just seize it while you had the chance. And that’s what Felix and Catalina do, not even knowing if there is a future for them.
It was refreshing reading a romance where they are on a level playing field and they trust one another, not hiding things from each other that will inevitably come to light. They were just themselves, and what the other needed.
I really really loved the suspense and the romance to this story. It was well balanced. There are some more mature matters mentioned, not detailed, but things like rape and murder are the root of some issues within the war and are mentioned. It had a purpose in the story.
And of course, we get to see the entire Knight family together at the end of the story. Which was nice for a little throwback to the previous books.
Next up, Euginas story. Perhaps Tinsley will be apart of that story? I’m excited to see how it turns out.
Thank you Elizabeth Johns, Dragonblade Publishing Inc. and Net Galley for the complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A cute story of spy vs. spy! Lady Catalina needed to retrieve the papers planted to catch a traitor. Unfortunately, Lord Felix Knight took them and denigrated her abilities as a spy! For Catalina-challenge accepted. She promptly steals them back and leaves a token for his benefit. When they finally realize they are on the same side of the war, they decide to join forces. They both agree to a pretend courtship, which would allow them to exchange information with a certain degree of privacy. Someone is desperate to prevent their efforts for England and has made several attempts to stop them. Neither of them expected to fall in love, but, with their differences in status, will this be a match made in heaven?
I have enjoyed the characters that Elizabeth Johns has created for our reading enjoyment. The youngest of the Knight brothers, Major Felix Knight, is the subject of her latest book. He was meant for the army and is extremely loyal to the Crown. He lives for danger, adventure and has no room in his heart for the love of a woman. After being a prisoner of war and healing from his wounds, he returns to fight against Napoleon, as a spy for Wellington.
Lady Catalina Mendoza has been following the drum with her father after her mothers dies. One night they meet accidently and find themselves thrown together in a great treacherous adventure. The characters are created with passion and I found the story line remarkably interesting. So much so, that I found the book hard to put down. Thank you for another wonderful story the of Gentlemen of Knights.
Major Lord Felix Knight is a spy for Wellington‘s army and his next assignment is to look for a evidence of a traitor at diplomat party where he encounters a most unlikely thief, one who wears rose perfume. Lady Catalina Mendoza has followed the drum with her father and they come to realize men will let their guard down and talk to a beautiful woman. Felix and Catalina a perfect together, they both seem to thrive at spying, intrigue and finding the traitor even as their attraction continues to grow. Both are loyal to their country and family. Felix he’s never met a woman like Catalina, but what does he have to offer her, a life in the army? Will they discover all that matter is love and grab their chance at happiness they both deserve? I have voluntarily read and reviewed these excellent story filled with intrigue, mystery and romance.
Dark of Knight by Elizabeth Johns is the story of Felix Knight, the youngest of the Knight brothers, introduced one by one in the Gentlemen of Knights series. Felix is a soldier, a spy, in service to General Wellesley in Spain, during the war against Napoleon. There is a traitor in their midst and Felix is hot on his trail. To his chagrin he discovers another on the same trail, a woman. It takes him very little time to discover who this woman is: the daughter of the Spanish commander, Senorita Catalina de Mendoza, daughter of a duke. At first he is resentful, then skeptical, finally resigned. They have to choice but to work together. Off they go on adventure after adventure, looking for the traitor or traitors. No one is exempt from scrutiny, including Catalina's father. It is a rocky ride. It is war. People get hurt, even spies.
This was a very fun book, moving out of England and England's women to meet Catalina, the much-loved daughter who was intelligent, brave, loving, and loyal. She was not a coward and she was as good a spy as any. Felix had convinced himself that love and marriage was not for him. He believed it so thoroughly that when it happened, he didn't know what it was. It was a fun romp through Spain, despite the war and the death. Felix was a good man and he deserved the love of a good woman, which he got in the end. The plot finale was surprising to the characters as well as the reader. It was worth the time. I recommend it.
I was invited to read a free ARC of Dark of Knight by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All opinions contained herein are solely my own. #netgalley #darkofknight
With Napoleon waging war on Europe, Major Felix Knight finds himself in Spain where friends cannot be trusted and enemies even less so. Lady Catalina Mendoza is the best spy in her father's quiver of arrows. With Felix and Catalina after the same quarry, they meet in the most unconventional of circumstances, both of them shooting off tit for tat insults. Ultimately, they find themselves working together to run down the traitor in their midst. This novel is fast-paced and adventurous with espionage and a side of romance. Felix does his level best to keep his distance from Catalina, but the more time they spend together, the greater his respect for her grows and he finally understands the attraction his brothers have for the married state. This novel is well-written and kept me engrossed from start to finish and I loved the main characters in this story. Catalina is a practical and down to earth woman who can flick her fan at a society event or smear her face in grime and don a boys clothing to stay incognito. Felix is gallant and charming, as well as protective, but recognises Catalina's skills and respects her for them. They are indeed a well-matched pair. I thoroughly enjoyed this romance and was glad that it came to a happy and successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This was a fun read. I wouldn’t say that it was super exciting nor would I say a page turner but I enjoyed reading and getting to know Lady Catalina as well as learning more about Felix Knight, the last of the Gentlemen of Knights men. I know there is another novel in this series coming but I can only assume it is will be about their sister. I find myself really enjoying the Knight family but will say that this one takes Felix to Spain during the war so except for the small visit with Rowland the rest of the family really doesn’t play a part in this one. I would give this 3 stars out of 5. This can be a stand alone novel but it is better if you know more of the back story on him from the other brothers’ novels.
Major Lord Felix Knight has always known he was destined for the army and is fiercely loyal to the Crown. Thriving on adventure and danger, there is no room in his life for the love and relationships which have cast their spells over his brothers. After healing from his time as a prisoner of war, he returns to the Peninsula to continue the fight against Napoleon. Despite Felix’s vows to the contrary, a beautiful lady causes him to lower his guard and soon he finds himself torn between love for country and woman.
Lady Catalina Mendoza has followed the drum with her father since her mother’s death. Men are drawn to her beauty and connections, but without exception, those gentlemen her father deems suitable bore and frustrate her. The only way she can tolerate the tedium is to glean information from her suitors to help her father. One night, she is caught at the game by a devilishly handsome Englishman—and everything changes.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This has been a wonderful series and at last it’s time to discover Felix the soldier and spy of the family.
He’s tough and honourable, a bit of a daredevil and has a very good relationship with Wellington.
His high standing and charisma are a wonderful added bonus to this character, his elder brother Rowley always seemed the most important but maybe not.
This is a brilliant adventure set in the Napoleonic era and with spies and traitors everywhere.
Felix falls for a Spanish lady who’s also in the same profession.
She’s beautiful and daring and her father is a Duke .
Can these two people get the bad guy and end up together or are the differences in their lives too much to be together.
Wonderful and enjoyable to read.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Major Felix Knight does spy work for the British army. Lady Catalina Mendoza is the daughter of influential General Mendoza of the Spanish army - little benownst to the British allies, the delicate appearing lady also spies for her father. After all, who would suspect a gentlewoman?
After committed bachelor and hardened soldier Felix discovers this, he and the Lady must team up to discover a traitor on the inside who is trying to sabotage their final push to defeat Napoleon and the French army.
This is a clean and chaste historical romance, and the fourth in a series. I have to admit, in the first few chapters I was really confused about who was allied with who and what was happening with the fake papers and spying. I don't know if this is down to me not having read the previous books, or just the fact that I have no head for strategy and war. I soon got over it however, and got into the story.
I enjoyed the characters of Felix and Catalina. I like that Catalina is strong and feisty, and that Johns manages to successfully toe the line of making Felix initially aloof and battle hardened, without making him rude or a giant douchebag. I enjoyed the intrigue of their quest to find the traitor. A problem I often have in contemporary romances is that the romance constitutes the entire plot, which can get a bit tiresome for me. I enjoyed that there was a fairly strong plot element outside of romance in this story, so that their feelings could develop alongside it rather than feel like the whole focus.
I have not read a lot of historical romance, and I enjoyed this more than I expected to. It was a nice, sweet, light read, and that epilogue was cute as heck. I will definitely check out the rest of the series for when I feel like an easy, clean romance read.
