Liked this book a lot! It's a great mixture of folklore and practical ideas, written in a friendly, easygoing tone that makes it that much more enjoyable to read. Hutcheson is both nonjudgmental and conscientious, treating practices from disparate cultures with care and often stopping to note the difference between appreciation and appropriation. An excellent bonus is extensive and helpful "further reading" lists at the ends of chapters.
This book is massive endeavor on the authors part of wrapping up a cornucopia of US magical practices & lore. He did not fall short on his goal of presenting the most complete smorgasbord of belief systems & tales of groups in the US. I might add, this book would not be complete without mention of the devil as it was so much a part of the fabric of folktales once there were more than the Indigenous peoples here after Spanish invasion. What I know of "granny magic" which is pretty strong stuff if you have ever watched or been around it is heavily steeped in a form of Christianity so not knocking their ways of using it & it is imperative to be included in any serious magical tome of the US area of practitioners. Same with southern veins that have some hair raising things you can do with saints or their days which work.. I also enjoy the way he presents everything with an additional caveat of needed point made that a little bit of knowledge doth not make a practitioner make & brings up appreciation, history, practice, etc versus appropriation. This is a compilation not limited to a particular individual or worldview but a grouping of many in the US.
Needless to say, yes, this is another copious reference book you need in your collection. I can't imagine the time it took to bring forth this labor of love but well done. To peruse this book well I would recommend hardcopy rather than a kindle as that is now what I will be obliged to get
New World Witchery is an extremely thorough and comprehensive resource for someone who practices, or is interested in, any earth based practice or magical lore. The book goes into North American folklore, history, rites, rituals, spells, tools, foods and herbs, familiars, roots, stones and bones, spirits and so much more. There are also 20 chapters included for exercises.
This is a book to reach for now and then, not one to read and then shelve. An excellent guide.

Having recently been drawn to witchcraft, I live near Memphis where HooDoo is practiced til this day. It's common to see references in unexpected places. Folk magic draws me and this was an invaluable book that gave me quite a bit of details. This is definitely one I'll want on my bookshelf.
I love learning new witchy information. Especially when you can combine new with old, that makes me very happy. I really learned a lot from this book on combining the two. I also learned a lot of new things I had no idea about. The stories behind the spells & rituals were absolutely fascinating. I definitely intend to get a hard copy as well
This book explores several occult traditions which have been rooted in America. And when you mix them like in this text you get one new tradition that we can call "new world witchery". You can find here classic spells from grimoires, special verses from Bible for miracle healing, voodoo techniques...and many, many folk rituals. Seems that witchcraft beliefs are presented authentically because some parts of the book can be little "darker" than usual Witchy guide but if one carefully follows instructions it will be fine. As usual in some parts few more infos would be welcomed, otherwise this is an interesting book which will offer you great insights.
This is an absolutely fantastic collection of North American folk magic, folklore, and pagan traditions. The author, Cory Thomas Hutcheson, presents witchcraft with fresh perspective and unique personal touch. Hutcheson has a warm writing style that inviting and enjoyable to read. The contents of the rites are thoughtfully organized, which I appreciate as it will make revisiting the subject material based on current intentions simple and purposeful. Overall, this collection is well written and serves as a thoughtful guide for spiritual reflection.
This book is a great collection of North American pagan traditions. Very informative, and it includes magical exercises you can enjoy yourself. This is a book that you really need to own in physical copy to be able to enjoy. To read it in even less than 20 days was tough for me, i wanted to take notes and really absorb the information being presented to me.
At first, I did not connect the author/title with the podcast. I loved this book from the beginning. He breaks down everything to give you a clear definition of what he is talking about. The extras such as singing bones and dirt under your nails give wonderful extra information and things you can do. Having additional reading at the end is amazing because I love learning more. It shows what he had looked at in that chapter and giving the titles and etc of this resource if you want to look at it yourself. Hutcheson pulls in different practices and beliefs and show you what those are and what it entails.
I received this book from netgalley in exchange with a review.
I've been looking forward to this book for months and reading it has been an absolute pleasure! The author does a fantastic job piecing together lore and interesting spells/rituals. This tome will add depth and dimension to any practice be you an armchair magician or a practicing witch, ceremonial magician, traditional witch, etc. and I stand by this statement because even armchair magicians have a practice.
I would highly recommend this for any practitioners personally library.
This book is an absolute treasure, and one that I will need to have as a hard copy as well as on my kindle! It has so, so much amazing information in it, and is written in an incredibly accessible manner. I personally love a dense, treasure trove of information (and seriously, most of us interested in witchy ways are the same, right?!) and so I highly recommend this book.
“New World Witchery” is a valuable addition to the genre of magical studies. Many books about witchcraft focus solely on European practices, so it was a refreshing change to read about uniquely North American witchery. This book does a great job of explaining the wide variety of different practices that have developed in North America while also addressing the issue of cultural appropriation in a thoughtful and respectful way.
There are many interesting magical exercises offered in the book, which could be a great jumping off point for witches or pagans wanting to add to their existing practice. Overall, though, “New World Witchery” is mostly an engaging and educational collection of folklore.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand more about magic in North America and perhaps add some new elements to their own practice. It would also be an interesting reading experience for non-pagans who simply want to learn about magical lore and history.
* I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to NetGalley and Llewellyn.
I can definitely tell how much work went into writing this book. Although dense with information , I loved the recommended reading at the end of chapters. So many people are looking for books on this topic. I also liked the breakdown of various types of magical practices and the focus on heretically breaking from Christian roots. All are real problems many people face. Being gnostic myself I see nothing wrong with combining practices from wherever feels right. I also liked the inclusive feel the book has, although the constant mentioning the devil was a bit too much 1700s superstition/folklore for me. The concept of the devil, although important in a historical context, is not something I focus on in my daily life. Otherwise there's a lot of fascinating history in this book. I enjoyed it. Thank you for allowing me to review it. I will be sharing the book on Twitter, Goodreads, Amazon (after publication) and in the Broom Closet spiritual learning group on Facebook. I'll update this review with links as I post them.
This book is very comprehensive. It covers a bit of everything. The author has done a superb job of collecting and presenting various aspects of the craft. I have learned quite a bit myself. This is just a beautifully written authority in the craft. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone in the know.
A detailed guide to new world witchery, the author refers to American magic, although he includes other areas where appropriate, but mainly the new world. I never knew so much lore existed, although I knew of Salem, and had a vague knowledge of New Orleans, he has really opened my eyes to magical practices in the new world, and to a lot of other things in passing. This book is definitely worth a read. .
