A great book from Alice Hunter. I’ve never read a book by this author before and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed the story. The characters were well thought out and the story was well paced.
It was twisted, disturbing, and thrilling until the end. I loved watching the television series Dexter, and always wondered how his family would feel about his extramural activities. (they do know eventually (no spoilers). This book lets you see the murders from the families eyes and makes for intriguing reading.
Wow, this was a heart racing book for sure! Lots of TWs though to have a look at before reading, if you feel they might affect you. I enjoyed the dual POV and without any spoilers... I would sum up the book as being fast paced and chilling. There were lots of twists, turns and a cliffhanger that will leave you gasping in shock! I'm excited to read the sequel now. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book.
This was a great read , Beth and Tom are seemingly the perfect couple, they have recently moved from the manic streets of London to live a quiet life with their young daughter but out of nowhere Beth gets a knock on the door and discovers that Tom is being arrested for murder. A good few dark twists that keeps the reader interested throughout, I’m looking forward to reading the next book.
Told in alternating narratives between Tom and Beth this book had me from the start! Things are not always what they seem and there’s no such thing as a perfect family.
I really enjoyed this book and couldn’t wait to finish-I will stay up really late if I’m really into a book and I did just that.
Thanks for the ARC
I enjoyed The Serial Killers Wife by Alice Hunter, my first by this author but certainly nothing last. Set in a small village, you think Beth has the perfect marriage, the perfect house and the perfect family but how wrong can she be. With great twists and turns, this book held my interest and I just had to sit and read it in one sitting.
This book was everything I look for in a book. It was so exciting. The plot was fantastic. It really had me on the edge of my seat, and my heart racing. It was very well written and flowed well.
This was not great for me. I think I've seen this story one too many times and this was my least favorite reedition. This was a combination or A Simple Favor and You and honestly I was not a fan of either. The characters were insufferable. I think the whole story was predictable and the twists uninspired.
Spoilers AHEAD!!!!!!!!
I think it could have been great if Beth had started off as a emotional distraught wife with the arrest of her husband, but she was immediately suspicious. She was more concerned about people's reactions then her husband or his victim. She then immediately latches on to the newly widowed neighbor...The "twist" at the end was too obvious. I think the only thing going for her was her love of Poppy and her being a "good" mom...at least in her eyes. I think they were trying to create a Gone Girl atmosphere but it fell flat. I really wish her character was written better and with more nuance. The final twist would have made Beth's character a more compelling character. Who was the real psychopath in this relationship?
I liked the Tom flashbacks in the beginning but Tom's character was too underdeveloped to be compelling-- a Joe from You knockoff and Adam has the worst instincts ever...the characters were just flat. I think I just didn't enjoy the writing style
I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Aah! This was not quite the domestic thriller I was expecting.
A really good read, and perfect for a lazy summer day.
The atmosphere, logic of the characters, and suspense were all the better part of the book.
I found the character of Beth really interesting to read and ...that particular trope was EXTREMELY well done in this instance. You'll find yourself "just one more chapter"-ing this book until you've finished it at 2am.
Wow what a page turner. There were so many twists and turns. I loved the writing style. I was not the biggest fan of Beth’s character and how naive she was. By the end I was shocked. This was a quicker paced murder mystery and I kept racing through the pages to see who was guilty or who could be trusted. Would read from this author again.
Can you imagine being happily married to the love of your life, and then one evening he doesn't come home from work, there's a knock on the door, and when you open it, the police are standing there!
Has he been in an accident?
Or has he been arrested for killing his ex girlfriend?

Ok so wow, I seem to be on a run of incredible books at the moment! This was just perfect. It had everything I enjoy in a thriller - short, to the point chapters which kept it fast paced. Alternating POV's between husband and wife, who both turn out to be very unreliable narrators. Fantastically written characters. Just something about this book made me completely unable to put it down!
We jump straight into the plot mid action, and the beginning really built up tension as we see Tom questioned about a past murder and Beth shell shocked. I couldn’t stop thinking about how terrifying it would be for this to suddenly be happening to your “perfect” family. For me the book kept up a quick and suspenseful plot throughout, and the end wrapped up well - it did end on a pretty large cliff hanger which I’m really hoping means we get a sequel!?
I loved all the twists and turns this book takes us on and enjoyed the interspersing short chapters from the “unknown” victims to add more mystery. I found the characters very interesting — it’s easy to automatically mistrust one straight from the off but the author slowly leaves a breadcrumb trail of clues which has you starting to doubt everyone. It was interesting to see how a certain character’s mind worked in such a calculating way to manipulate things to get exactly what was wanted— from the authors note at the start of the book this is knowledge she specializes in from her career.
Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything I disliked about this! The only thing I’d say is I’d have liked a bit more from the mind of Tom but this didn’t effect my enjoyment of the book and I’d highly recommend picking this up!
Thank you so much to Avon Books for contacting me and sending me a copy to review!

The Serial Killer's Wife was a boring, bland book.
Beth doesn't even question it when her husband Tom is arrested for murder. She doesn't go see him immediately or try to get him out of jail. She ignores calls from his attorney. Then the book is all about her mundane life in the village, how the "yummy mummies" will react to the news that Tom was arrested, and how this will affect their daughter, Poppy.
Readers do get some chapters from Tom's point of view 8 years ago, which were more interesting, but, still, he's got to be the most boring serial killer.
And the twist? It was so obvious.
Another thriller that took me in from the start. Alice Hunter's debut novel is clever, brilliant and an overall epic read.
What a page turner . I couldn’t put this book down and had me changing my mind throughout . An easy page turner . 4.5 stars
I really enjoyed reading this book, I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't been for the last couple pages. I liked the plot twist towards the end, however the last couple lines of the book felt off to me, I'm not sure if it is supposed to make me keep thinking or if I'm supposed to look for another book to this story. I may have missed something with Julia along the way though.... the author gave us tid bits about her but I didn't feel she was fully developed so I guess I wasn't sure what to think.
I was super excited to read this as I have seen it about a lot and the title just grabs you immediately!
This is definitely a slow burn book and for avid thriller fans, you can probably guess the twist early on.
I found the main female character hard to like, despite the situation she was in, and felt that held me back from enjoying the book as much as I could have.
Overall a page turning read but just lacking that eye opening punch!!
This was a good book, quite twisty with short chapters which I like. The characters were believable and the plot interesting.
DNF - Did not finish. I did not connect with the writing style or plot and will not be finishing this title. Thank you, NetGalley and Publisher for the early copy!
The title and description drew me in but the story was just okay. It was a very slow burn which made it difficult at times to immerse myself in it. It had potential to be a great story but the lack of suspense and drama made it just an average read.
