I am a sucker for British novels. I was not familiar with Laura Jane Williams or any of her previous works.
Annie is jilted on her wedding day. Alexander, her fiancé, has done the unimaginable by texting the wedding planner to relay a message that he won't be coming to the wedding. Annie is beyond shocked.
Annie unexpectedly runs in to a friend, Patrick, from her past and they renew their friendship effortlessly.
Annie's would-be in-laws insist that Annie still go on the dream honeymoon that they had worked so hard to plan. Annie then invites Patrick to accompany her on the trip because they are just friends.
At first glance, this book appears to be a fluffy light-hearted read. Williams tackles some heavier topics including loss of a spouse and sudden loss.
My only complaint is that the end of the book felt rushed. I would have appreciated the book taking more time to resolve the conflict between Annie and Patrick.
I will definitely watch for future releases from Williams.
I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All thoughts & opinions are my own.
I wanted to like this one. I really did. The premise seemed like something right up my alley, but I just couldn't get into it. I didn't NOT like The Lucky Escape, it was just ok. I would love to give this author another chance in the future, but in the words of Randy Jackson, "this one is a no for me dawg."
I was really excited to be going into this book. But honestly, it was quite a letdown. From the start, the writing, the pacing and the whole story felt off. At first, I thought it was just my mood at the time, but even after my second and third attempts to get into it, it didn't get any better. At times it felt really rushed and the conversations and interactions didn't flow. Maybe it's just me and other people might like it better, but it didn't really do it for me.
A really solid addition to the genre; reliable, if a little predictable in places. Would recommend if you know what you want from this sort of book, as it definitely delivers that. Good beach read.
This was just what I needed, a cute, easy and fun read. Annie is due to marry her long-term partner Alexander but he selfishly leaves her on their wedding day with only a text to the wedding planner to explain why. Annie is understandably distraught, but when she bumps into an old friend, Patrick, at the gym, she might just have a little light coming back into her life. And when Alexander's parents still want Annie to take the tickets to the honeymoon it only makes sense for Patrick to join. This story drew me in; I felt invested in Annie's story and I just wanted her to be happy. I really enjoyed the holiday setting as it brought a lot of fun and excitement to the plot - especially after we've all been stuck at home for so long! This would be a perfect beach read.
This book has been sitting on my TBR pile for months and I am so glad I finally picked and finished reading it. The author’s previous book ‘Our Stop’ is one of my favorite romance books of all times and her romance books are just my type. I wouldn’t say I loved this book as much but I definitely enjoyed reading it and finished it in a day.
Although I did enjoy the book, there were definitely some pages I just skimped through as they were quite boring. I didn’t really love love the characters or simply to say none of them were exceptional. I did like relationships between Annie and her little sister Freddie. Overall, the book was okayish. While I do think with the outline or the main plot, the story could have been so much better but it’s a slow paced, self discovery, light read with mediocre story. Thankyou Netgalley and Avon books for e-arc.
Such a sweet book. The perfect summer read with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged and some good character development. Well paced and overall very enjoyable
I enjoyed this book, a fun, light hearted easy read, ideal for holidays.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this book in exchange for a review. I will be putting this on Amazon too.
The cover of this book is so warm and inviting that you think you're in for a good read.
The inside is not disappointing. The story was warm and cute.
Very much the kind of book you can pick up by the pool.
This was an enlightened read but at the end of the day i was a bit bored. The female MC lacked substance and i found myself skimming.
I loved the writing in this book but I was not super sold on the romance in here. It was often cringey and just not believable enough for me to want to keep reading. I nearly put this down and DNF'ed several times. unfortunately, it's not one that I'll be adding to my physical shelf
Really enjoyed this book - feel like there are a lot of tips that many of us can use.
Pleasant story with a romance to enjoy with nice plausible characters .
I loved this book a lot! So light hearted and fun. Definitely makes a good beach read. Laura delivers again with her great feel good books!
I love the chemistry between Patrick and Annie and the fact that no character was ‘perfect’ and that they all had their flaws. The plot wasn’t all smooth sailing and happy which was great to see because it really mirrored the fact that life isn’t all rainbows. It was nice to read something realistic in terms of life doesn’t always go the way you want or expect it to.
This book follows a theme of love and loss and learning to be yourself again. There was a good amount of funny in the book and I really just want to give Annie a big hug. The overall vibe of the book makes it a perfect summer read. I also like the fact that it is not a ‘go, fall in love, come home and live happily ever after ‘ book and that more happens after the return and that it’s not all smooth sailing, giving the book more depth, as well as characters.
This was an okay book for me. I thought the beginning situation was drawn out and almost quit reading it 30% in. I wanted less "woe is me" from Annie, which pushed the love story from happening sooner or made it swoony.
Thank you NetGalley for this #gifted copy to review. It was just the book I needed, so easy to read and I even listened to some parts on Scribd which I loved, made even better narrated by Carrie Hope Fletcher.
Chosen for my never ending NetGalley choice where the theme was new beginnings, which really fit perfectly when Annie was left standing at the alter.
Was it predictable, yes… Did that take away any enjoyment, absolutely no way.
I loved Our Stop and The Love Square also by this author so I think it’s safe to say she’s becoming an auto buy author for me.
Light hearted, romantic, humorous and fun this book was great.
I loved this book. It was very well written. Great characters and very easy to picture I enjoyed the story too.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion
This was a fun read! Nothing too serious, something I would recommend for laying around by the pool/on the beach
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
I love when books hit the sweet spot of a fun “summery” read but with enough emotional depth that it’s not total fluff. I’m many ways, The Lucky Escape hits this mark. However, I found it to be an average chick lit read. Unfortunately, I found it hard to connect with Annie and Patrick. I didn’t get a good sense of who Annie is and it felt like Patrick was really just to help her get over her situation. I enjoyed the book enough while reading but if I don’t understand or connect with the characters it’s hard to really love the book. I put it down thinking “ok, that was fine. On to the next”.
Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for my copy of this book in return for an honest review!
Once I got started, I absolutely devoured this book. I found myself staying up late just to finish reading it as I was captivated.
Our main characters were enjoyable and very believable - I loved(!) the relationship shown between the two sisters and between Annie and her parents, too. I found Patrick to be very charming and someone who I very much kept reading for.
It was a witty, fast paced storyline with well developed characters and the perfect lighthearted romance.
