A couple of years ago I read Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Tales of Extraordinary Women and Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2 and I really enjoyed them; and this is really a continuation of those two volumes. It is so important, especially for little girls (I say little girls because I am pretty sure that is the main target audience, after all it is a children’s book about powerful women, but it can apply to anyone), to be made aware of the many wonderful women who have existed and the extraordinary things that they have done, because sometimes they are not as acknowledged as they should be.
I think that this book is very well done, considering the target audience for it. The illustrations are beautiful and very eye-catchy, and the lives of the women are concise and straightforward, only highlighting the most important events of their lives.
Incredible as always! We have a few is the Rebel Girls books and will definitely be adding this one too our collection.
Rebel Girls Lead is a great book for younger girls to learn about strong women who have pushed past the standards held for women and made something of themselves. I don't think this book is just for younger girls or women though. I think everyone could learn something from this book about feminism and strong leading women.
I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about all of these women. This book was very inspiring and I can't wait to check out more books from REbel Girls.
What a brilliant book. I haven't really read any of the other 'rebel girls' titles so was new to it. I think this book is great. It tells brief stories of a number of inspirational women. Some of whom I had heard of, Michelle O'Bama, Aly Raisin etc but other were new to me. The illustrations and quotes are a really nice touch and I like the brief overview of each person's life and achievements
This is a great starter for kids and perfect to share in the classroom. It also inspired me to find out more about some of the women I'd never heard of.
Will definitely be getting a copy for my classroom. Highly recommend!
My love for Rebel Girls knows no end. Love the inspirational and positive messages of leadership, agency and girl power! Illustrations are always top notch. Definitely will be part of our gift giving!
A great story highlighting important female leaders throughout history. The last few pages were particularly my favorite, encouraging children to be proactive, applying the readings to their own lives and beyond. A powerful book for children across all genders and a great starting point towards thinking about how to make a difference at a young age.
A brilliant and gorgeously illustrated book about twenty inspiring women in leadership who have made their mark in the world. Each story is told in an engaging and very readable fairy tale style. This will make a great addition in so many libraries and classrooms! Looking forward to buying the hard copy of this.
Rebel girls Lead is a short non-fiction book which has the stories of 25 female leaders.
I was aware of the stories of some of these women like Malala, Michelle Obama and Cleopatra, but the others were so inspiring like Kamala Harris, Lady Gaga and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Also loved the illustrations and the concept of adding one of their quotes.
Each tale is a few paragraphs and is accompanied with a drawing of the woman. All of the drawings in the book are by women from around the world! I loved seeing all of the different art styles, they were all really nice and added a vibrancy to the book. The stories were a bit on the short side, more a summary of motivations, accomplishments, and insights of each woman, but I think since this book is aimed toward younger audiences, it's good. I think children reading this book, maybe with their parents, will lead to some great conversations about how women impact communities and the world. I learned about some new leaders I hadn't known about previously, which is pretty awesome.
Both myself and my children really enjoyed these inspiration tales about inspirational women, and I can't wait to share what I learned with the students in my class when we return to school. It's full of confidence building, thought provoking incidents, that tell young people, both boys and girls alike, to shoot for the stars because life is what you make it.
Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for an eARC of this book.
This was an empowering read! Little girls, and boys for that matter, will find comfort in seeing such powerful women take action for what they care about. Passion and determination are what makes life vivid and exciting. 'Rebel Girls Lead' captured that beautifully! The art was also stunning, and I liked how there was a different illustrator for each woman. It prevented the book from getting boring, and was really refreshing to see! For younger kids, 'Rebel Girls Lead' will be easy to understand as it's written in simple language.
The only thing I didn't like was how some of the people mentioned were already mentioned in the previous books. That was unfortunate because there are so many amazing women in the world that no one knows about, so I feel they could have shed light on other empowering women.
Nevertheless, it was still a fun read!
Overall Review: 6/10 or 3.5 stars
Rebel Girls Lead is a brilliant book for young readers, it includes 25 life stories about powerful women who accomplish a wide variety of goals. There's also a section at the end with activities and questions to get kids thinking which was a nice touch.
I enjoyed the stories, I actually think they could have been a bit longer if anything. Each story was accompanied by a beautiful illustration by a female illustrator which I absolutely loved.
The women's stories that were chosen were all strong women who fought for what they believed in, there was a good amount of diversity in terms of race but I would have liked to see some LGBTQ+ representation.
All in all, I think it's a really motivating book and I would definitely buy it for my own kids one day!
An inspirational book for young girls.
- Excellent illustrations
- Inspiring read-ups on Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Lady Gaga, Malala Yousafzai, Kamala Harriss etc.
Some things that I kept thinking about:
- This isn't really Rebel Girls Lead but more of American Rebel Girls lead. There are hardly any girls from other places. Malala represents the whole of Asia! This is published in US and aiming American readers probably, with a very narrow lens of inspirational women. But I kept thinking about it, especially given the title 'Rebel Girls'.
Similar to other Rebel Girl books, this is a compendium of short bios with gorgeous illustrations. This particular one is short, with only 25 women profiled. But they were all very important stories, some of which need to be better known, and I hope this book will help with that. The election of Kamala Harris as the first woman vice president of the United States was, apparently, the impetus for this edition, and she is one of the 25 women profiled, along with other American women, such as Aly Raisman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Ann Richards, Harriet Tubman, Tammy Duckworth, Lady Gaga and Wilma Mankiller. Other women are from Germany, Guatemala, ancient Egypt (Cleopatra!), England, Mexico and a few more. The book also includes space for a girl to “write your story” and “draw your portrait” plus a quiz to find out what the reader’s leadership style is and a few exercises in leadership training.
The publisher says this book is recommended for ages 5-10. I imagine it would most appeal to readers in the older end of that range but that is just based on my 7-year-old granddaughter whose interests right now seem to be mainly princesses and unicorns. I look forward to the day I can gift her some of these Rebel Girl books!
Thank you to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This is a collection of informative and inspiring short stories, each one centered around one strong and independent woman. The book covers a range of influential women from all backgrounds, colours, upbringings etc. Each woman has their story to tell of overcoming barriers and diversity to achieve wonderful things. The stories are written using emotive language which is sure to inspire all women of all ages.
Like all the books in the Rebel Girls series, the entries contain an illustration that in some way pays homage to the culture of the woman being profiled and a short snippet (4 or 5 paragraphs) about the woman's life. Everything is very abridged and nothing is in-depth, but there is enough of an introduction to each woman to spark an interest and inspire the reader to want to lean more about her.
What I particularly liked about this one was the variety of leaders they chose. There were climate change and social justice advocates, there were politicians and judges, but there were also sports figures and migrant workers. This book profiles strong women of all ages from around the globe. I recommend it to readers and non-readers of all ages.

Rebel Girls Lead is such a powerful, informative book that I'd highly recommend that others share with their young ones. The women selected within the book are all strong role models for young girls and I fully intend to incorporate this into my own life in as many ways as possible.
Rebel Girls Lead is a collection of short biographies for 25 women in leadership roles. Due out 26th Jan 2021 from Rebel Girls, it's 64 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is a well illustrated collection of 25 short biographies of women from a broad number of backgrounds and areas of expertise including supreme court judges, political activists, athletes, artists, resistance fighters, and more. They are drawn from a number of eras, from Cleopatra to Vice-President elect Kamala Harris and from a wide variety of world cultures. The illustrations are simple but recognizable. There are a number of different illustrators contributing to this collection.
Representation is so important. It's nice to read about these inspiring women (past and present). Worth noting that some of the content contained here was previously published in Good Night Stories
for Rebel Girls, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2, and Good Night Stories for Rebel
Girls: 100 Immigrant Women Who Changed the World.
Worthwhile. This would make a superlative selection for home use, library acquisition, gifting, or school/classroom library.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
Featuring a mix of women from Aly Raisman to Kamala Harris, this title has a few repeats from prior Rebel Girls-books, but not so much that it's jarring. Each page holds a brief history of why the particular rebel woman is awesome, as well as illustrations, all created by different people from all over the world, and though the concept is pretty much the same as with other Rebel Girls-titles, it still holds up. Informative, diverse, fun, and definitely there to tell kids that they can do anything and everything and to never elt anyone tell them otherwise, this was a nice little read that's always relevant and always important.
The addition of exercise-pages in the back was really cool, and I can totally see kids get a lot out of them.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Rebel Girls has done it again! This new mini-collection of 25 female leaders is a wonderful addition to their collection.
Rebel Girls Lead came about because of the momentous 2020 election where Kamala Harris was elected as the first female vice president of the United States. Not only did they want to tell Kamala Harris's story, but the stories of other leaders that emerged in 2020, like Stacey Abrams and Jacinda Ardern. There was a desire to make sure kids saw leadership in its many forms too, in the stories of basketball coach Pat Summitt, Wilma Mankiller, the first female head of the Cherokee Nation, and Xiye Bastida, an 18 year old environmental activist.
With everything that has been going on in politics, it is important for young readers to see women in powerful leadership roles. But it is also important for young readers to realize that they have the potential in them to be the NEXT leaders. The team at Rebel Girls got smart and included what all young girls love, a quiz. This quiz asks what kind of leader are you? Because there isn't one type of personality that defines leadership. Some leaders work behind the curtain and are rarely noticed while others take center stage. They also encourage young girls to write their own story, making them really think about what they have done so far and what they hope to do in the future. A wonderful addition to the Rebel Girls collection.
