This is the first book in a young adult crime series. I don't read those a lot, but every once and again it does beckon me and of course, I follow. ;)

I think teenagers have a more difficult and complicated life than when I was young. There are advantages too where we could not count on the internet for various things, but on the other hand we had a lot more privacy which is very important too.

So yest, as an old timer, it's interesting to get a glimpse in the lives of said teenagers and I have to conclude they seem to be forced to grow up a lot faster. Maybe because there are more threats now then before, with people being able to hide behind screens to bully.

I love the twins, but there were a few youngsters who were a lot less gentle and kind, but this goes for the adults as well. After all, they should know better, a lot better...

A sad story. I am looking forward to book 2 I am going to read straight away. 4 stars

Thank you

Beneath Her Skin by Gregg Olsen and Narrated by Karen Peakes, is the first book in the promising Port Gamble Chronicles series and I really enjoyed it. However, it was slow to start with, but once I started to get into this audiobook I was hooked and it was hard to put down. It was an interesting audiobook/book.
I am looking forward to the next instalment within this series.

Big thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for my arc.

This was a good young adult mystery. It was a quick and easy read. I really liked the Ryan twins characters.

I really enjoyed Hayley and Taylor with all that entails.
I wish the story had focused solely on them instead of switching between so many different POV.
With so many POV and side stories, the main plot gets sort of lost in the shuffle.
There are entirely too many moving pieces to stay focused and intrigued in any one.
The story was still decent, just less immersive that it could have been.
Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for my ARC.

Can not wait to read the next book in this series.

Gregg Olsen is a fantastic story teller. You can’t help but like his characters even when you hate them.

Some twists and turns will have you believing you know what’s coming only to leave you surprised and even shocked in the end.

I would rate this book 2.5 out of 5 stars.

This one missed the mark for me. The writing was below par in my opinion and the author did not capture the teenage characters well at all - it definitely feels like a middle aged man writing a teenage girl.

When Katelyn’s body is found it all points to suicide but is this right. Katelyn survived a terrible bus crash a decade earlier which the town was devastated by. It’s soon clear that their suspicions could be wrong.
I just didn’t click with this book at all sadly. It just wasn’t the right one for me.
Thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

It took me to about the 70% mark to really fly through the rest of story. The supernatural element was only so-so to me, the character POV jumped around a lot, and I just didn’t feel drawn in until it was almost over. I do have the second in this series set to read by this author and liked this one enough that I will, but I don’t see myself picking up others any time soon.

**please note I will not be leaving a public review for this book as I have not paid for it, note that YA Genre doesn't interest me"

This book got off to a great start I didn't realise it was a YA book but still the first few chapters had me gripped enough to keep reading then it seemed to unravel a bit I became confused and then lost interest. All in all a good plot as I do like a bit of mystery.

Reading Between the Wines book review #98/115 for 2021:
Rating: 3 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 📱: Beneath Her Skin
Author: Gregg Olsen
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers
RELEASED on February 2, 2021!!!

Sipping thoughts: The story is about Katelyn who was found dead in a tub and was thought to be suicide. Twins Hayley and Taylor are clairvoyants who think they can figure out what happened. The first 75% of the book was really intriguing but once the cat was let out of the bag, I felt it started to fall a little short for me. I enjoyed the twins and their relationship with each other and with the medium world. I am excited to read the next book that includes Hayley and Taylor. I hope the ending is more exciting.

Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @Bookouture for an advanced copy of @BeneathHerSkin.

This book was previously released as the book envy. Gregg is one of my favourite authors but this book is a YA book and I think thats why I couldnt really get into it.

These paranormal thrillers were previously published as:
Book 1 -Beneath Her Skin = Envy (2011)
Book 2- Dying to be Her = Betrayal (2012)
If you don't like spoilers, make sure you read these books in the right order. There are plenty of red herrings, twists and turns to keep you turning the pages. Since I'd read Dying to be Her first, I knew quite a lot about the crime and the culprit(s). Still, I enjoyed Gregg Olsen's compelling writing style and finding out more about the recurring characters.
This YA mystery set in the sleepy town of Port Gamble (formerly known as Empty Coffin, hence the name of the series). The protagonists of the series, Hayley and Taylor Ryan, are 16-year-old identical twins with unusual extrasensory powers. Not only do they share a mysterious ability to sense when one of them is in trouble, but they also get visions of jumbled letters that once unscrambled help them solve crimes. While some characters in the book are quite exaggerated, I liked the way the author took pains to show how the sisters are both similar and very different in their character, attitudes and interests.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

This book was originally published as ENVY. This new edition has been re-edited since its publication in 2011.

Hayley and Taylor are twins with a gift. They are able to hear the dead. With a true crime writer and psychiatric nurse for parents, the twins were taught to use their gift to give a voice to the innocent.

Katelyn was a friend .. a much closer friend previously... found dead in her bathtub. Suicide...murder ... or accident?

The twins begin to receive messages from Katelyn.. and they are convinced that Katelyn was murdered. Everyone from the most popular cheerleader to the class outcast has motive to have her dead.

And as the twins get closer to the truth, it becomes clear that someone is watching them. Are they next on the hit list?

Although well-written, this is not one of the author's best. It's an intriguing plot if you like paranormal suspense. The characters did not come across as fully formed. Maybe because I'm out of touch with teenagers, at times this seemed to be more for a much younger audience. There didn't seem to be any high points .... and the ending was less than satisfactory. DYING TO BE HER is the second book and hopefully will answer more questions than this one did. That being said. the concept was a good one and I did not feel like my time was wasted.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this Paranormal Suspense. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This book starts with the death of a teenage girl. It seems like a tragic accident, maybe a suicide. But the people in the small town of Port Gamble share a dark past and have a lot of secrets. Teenage twins Hayley and Taylor have not only a connection but a gift. They sense there is more to Katelyn's death and continue to pick up on clues and messages that no one else can see. All of these are just pieces of a puzzle that have not come together yet. Hayley and Taylor have another problem, a person who wants to expose them, a person who knows more about their unique sensitivities and past than even they do.

This book is full of many interesting characters and families. Most of the story revolves around Hayley and Taylor as they attempt to interpret what they are sensing, and the mystery about their past is revealed in small pieces. The book does jump around from character to character, which can be distracting. It would have been easier had the characters each been given their own alternating chapters. I do like that the book resolved in a subtle and plausible manner without any big "aha" or overly dramatic moments, although there was one I didn't anticipate. There is another book after this one that continues with Hayley and Taylor's story and I very much look forward to reading about them again.

I generally shy away from YA books but I took a chance because I'm such a fan of Gregg Olsen. I really enjoyed the book and paranormal is always a winner for me. The book is fast paced and I enjoyed the storyline. The book centers around the death of a teenage girl. Was it accidental, murder or suicide? Twins Hayley and Taylor tap into their paranormal capabilities to try and figure it out.

This is the first piece of fiction that I have read from this author.. I found this book to be well written, however it just seemed to bounce around a bit and did not stay on topic where it needed to and I felt that this detracted from the suspense and the overall investment that I made as a reader. I did not really connect with the twins and it made it hard to stay committed wanting to see this book through. I felt that the other teen girls and their drama was just glazed over so I never really got a feel for the time before the death for the dead girl. I really like this author's true crime work and was disappointed by this disjointed attempt in this genre.. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.

This YA mystery is true crime mixed with supernatural elements. The twins super powers were original and unique. The suspense held my interest and the pacing of the story was fast and twisty. This is a great start to a compelling series. Thank you NetGalley for my ARC.
