This is a super cute children's illustrated book that puts a twist on fireflies. The illustrations are nice and simple, without being boring. Without a doubt little girls are likely to adore this; but I would definitely purchase it for boys as well as fairies (aka fireflies) don't have to be 'girly'. And certainly the dark and night are of intrigue to everyone.
The language here is good for early readers and it would make an adorable and appropriate bedtime story as it takes place at night and isn't too exciting before sleep.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
If you and your kids have been missing traveling, I highly recommend this as a bedtime or anytime read. A water ferry ride to Nova Scotia uncovers a mystery of the night sky and sea. Lovely storytelling with kind and curious characters. The illustrations have an edgy, rustic quality but capture the essence of the story nicely. This tale of two sisters water encounter with fairies is a delight! Perfect story to capture the imagination of future generations.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for the chance to read this. All opinions are my own.

It was a really fun book to read and very informatif to. But not in a bored way. My daughter really loved it and wants to go catch fireflies to now.
Fireflies is a cute story about girls who end up going firefly hunting and find a surprise when they inspect their catches.
It was sweet, and the drawings were cute. I love the magical idea of fireflies, it drew me in immediately from the cover and title.
Though, when I go in for a children's book, especially one I'd like to read my kids one day, I always hope that there would be a moral in the story. I'm not sure what the moral would be here if not just "faeries exist" or "don't catch bugs" which seem like not great morals. Regardless of the lack of moral, it was still a cute story. If only the fairies had talked to the girls or something.
I was a little off put because I was drawn in by the cover that looked like two Black girls, and I got so excited to see that in a book!!!! I wanted to support it!!! But they seem more racially ambiguous with Irish names. Oh well, guess it wasn't what I expected on that one.
My favorite part was that the petals stayed alive and the music held in a jar, though. Two simple beautiful magics!
This picture book was cute for readers with an imagination. There is a lot of information in the pictures that help tell the story.
Lovely little story that will appeal to younger children!
It's quite magical and tells children that Fairies do exist ❤️ it's always good to keep the magic alive.
Oh, I was hoping this would be a sweet realistic fiction book about fireflies! Instead it started out as a realistic book and ended with "facts" about water fairies. I didn't appreciate that the "facts" were presented as true, which I think will be very confusing for young readers. I didn't find the story that engaging, although the twist of the fireflies being fairies was unexpected.
This is a nice story with a surprising twist at the end. The bond between the sisters is well-written and I like how they care for the creatures in the story instead of torturing them or killing them. The ending of the story is a bit abrupt.
The book is good for beginner chapter readers as the content and language are very basic and easy to understand. The illustrations add to the charm.
The main thing I didn't like was the section on "Fun Facts about Water Faeries" towards the end. Facts makes it sound like the trivia provided are true. It is a misnomer. I can understand facts being provided about animals or plants or humans but I really didn't understand the purpose of including facts about imaginary creatures.
