This is a middle grade book with some fantastical elements tied into it. I enjoyed the family aspect of the three sisters and the traveling that was within the book too. Being very familiar with North Carolina where the majority of this book was set I felt as if I was right at home with all of the characters. I loved the growth that we were able to see come from our main character as she went through the death of a family member. I loved the narrator of this audiobook and her voice was really soothing to listen to!
Thank you so much to NetGalley for sending me a copy of this audiobook! I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it!
Cindy Baldwin writes beautifully and her work also presents complicated situations with no easy answers. THE STARS OF WHISTLING RIDGE is a thought-provoking story with a main character that I believe many young readers will relate to. With her family always on the move, Ivy wants a forever home more than anything. But what if her wishes come at the expense of others?
This work is certainly timely in that Ivy is also an angry girl, and there's (understandably) a lot of that emotion to go around these days. The story explores what anger and negative emotions can do -- the author is never pedantic or preachy, though, in this exploration. As a result, I found myself thinking about this issue long after finishing the book, as I'm sure other readers will do as well.
Fans of LITTLE WOMEN will also enjoy this book, and will recognize the parallels between the characters. In fact, I believe Baldwin does a better job than Alcott in terms of convincing the reader to feel more sympathy toward certain characters (.... yes I'm talking about Amy March....)
Finally, I enjoyed the magical realism aspect of this story. I think we can all do with a little magic (or hope in wish-granters like the Stars of Whistling Ridge) in our lives.
I simultaneously read and listened to this book. I enjoyed the narrator and feel my students would enjoy it as well.
This would be a great read for 3rd - 6th grade student! Although, the story does lag a bit, I cant speak for all on how they would envelop themselves around the storyline. I could see this book being loved by an 8 year old!
This is a lovely story of three fallen star sisters who help rejuvenate the earth, and 3 sisters who yearn for different but same things.
I was so exasperated with Ivy for being so pigheaded and selfish, while all she wanted was a stable proper home to call her own, and friends she can be confident of committing to an even a month away. Sophie is so smart you tend to forget she’s only 8 with an eight year old’s thoughts and instincts . At first glance, Elena is the typical peacemaker middle child. But then you notice how observant and persuasive she can be.
The small town of Whistling Ridge is a character on its own, warm and yet in some ways, sinister and spooky, with a story of a love gone awry that might be at the bottom of all the things that are going wrong now.
This is a middle grade fantasy with an element of mystery and adventure, family and friendship - perfect for halloween season.
Magical. Captivating. And it is one I would love to read aloud to students. I am late to review as right after this I had to take an extended break that lasted a much longer time than I planned.
Ivy and her family travel around the US in an RV named Martha. Her mother is a fallen star and grants wishes to people in the area they are visiting. Ivy is tired of moving around all the time and wishes for a permanent house to live in where she can make friends. Little does she know that her wish will lead her on an adventure to discover the hidden past of Whistling Ridge, North Carolina.
This is a charming story! It is full of secrets, friendships, family relationships, and digging up the past. It is a perfect read for middle-grade readers!
The audiobook was wonderful to listen to! It was easy to follow along.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Collins, and Blackstone Publishing for the ARC and Audiobook of this book in exchange for my honest review!
An fun book with an interesting premise. The magic and magical realism work well together to make an engaging story
The Stars of Whistling Ridge
Ivy and her family travel… a lot. She comes from a long line of Fallen Stars. Literally. Fallen stars take shape of humans and help fulfill wishes all around the world. But all Ivy wants is to set roots down, have a forever home ands travel with her family. When an opportunity presents itself she makes a wish to stay in whistling ridge forever. Then, weird things start happening. The town's magic begins to die. Ivy sets out to help find the cause and is confronted with a tough decision. Let the magic in town die for the possibility of a forever home, or fix the magic and travel with her family again.
This one took me a while because I received the audiobook and it was a synthesized voice. I waited until the actual audiobook was released in order to assess the book. The story was very well done and Ivy and her family are confronted with very serious situations. You see Ivy wanting something so bad she risks her family to get it. You see a very good family dynamic between the parents and the girls, and between the girls themselves. You see their personalities and how they love each other and also clash. I think it shows very well that people should stand up for themselves and for what they believe in, as well as the bond of a family (born or found) is stronger than anything.
I received this audiobook from the publisher via @Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars, rounded up! :)
This book was charming. I loved the tale of the Star Women who traveled the world providing wishes to those who needed them. The main character, Ivy Mae, has a very powerful desire to find a permanent home, and through one brash act drives the plot of the story right to Whistling Ridge. Here she makes friends and gets involved in a local historical mystery while her mother and aunts try to solve a present day mystery. All in all, this story had great representation, great plot development, and a strong-willed female lead that many young readers will resonate with. I listened to an artificial audio recorded version, but even so, the voices of these characters sang through to make this a very enjoyable read!
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for a free audio copy in exchange for an honest review!
I've been a fan of Baldwin since "Where the Watermelon Grow." I will tell anyone and everyone who amazing her books are for the middle-grade audience. She is masterful in writing about complex family dynamics, and situations that while complicated, are so real for youth today.
The Stars on Whistling Ridge brings in what she does so well, and adds in magical surrealism. Ivy Mae Bloom is a 13-year-old girl who calls an RV home. She travels the country with her mother whose goal is to help people by granting their wishes. Her own wish is simple, that she can find a place to really call home.
While not my favorite of Baldwin's books she once again shared a story that anyone can appreciate. It helps if you like magical surrealism (which isn't my genre of choice.) I appreciated the dynamic between the characters; Ivy and her sisters, the pets, the aunts. Even the minor cast had an important role in the story and I appreciated meeting them all. There are lessons buried in the story.
Thank you to @netgalley for my complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend.. and in the meantime, be careful what you wish for!
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this!
This book instantly drew me in, I really enjoyed this book and the plot. This author did amazing. I loved the writing style. I highly recommend picking this up!
I loved the book, but could not read the audio version. The narrator was robotic and it didn't sound right at all. I had to read the ebook version. I would love to get more ARCs of audiobooks that aren't the robots reading it, but real people.
I am very curious to see what my students think after reading The Stars of Whistling Ridge. They all loved Where the Watermelons Grow, but I have a feeling this one will have mixed reviews. While I enjoyed the audio version of this book, I was not immediately running over to put it on my to be purchased list for our library books this year. I gave this one 3 stars,.
I received an advanced copy of this audiobook from the publisher through netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. The narrator did a great job reading this book. The friendships and family relationships are described great. It was a enjoyable book to listen to. I would recommend listening to this book to anyone and everyone. It is in stores for $16.99 (USD).
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* pretty cute middle grade book with a unique spin on magic! Also loved that the kids lived on the road, if we ever move into an RV will have this in our little library for sure.
This was a beautiful well done audiobook. I enjoyed both the story and the narration. Thank you for the opportunity to review it
I received an advanced copy of the audio version of The Stars of Whistling Ridge through NetGalley.
Specifically pertaining to this pre-release version, using a synthesized voice rather than the real narrator I will have to say: Why even bother? It was truly un-listenable. I could not get through more than 2 chapters of this audio book. Fortunately I also had the e-book version, so I was able to read this highly enjoyable book and give it the good review it deserves, but the audio ARC with a computer voice is not worth anybody's time.
This was a cute middle grade story about a traveling family where the women of the family have the ability to do magic. The magical aspect wasn't explained very well (that I remember) but I guess that's probably par for the course in a middle grade novel. Don't want to overwhelm the kiddos! Oh I just remembered something about Ivy's mom and her aunts and the magic! It's pretty fantastical! Ivy just wanted to put down roots (pun intended) and it took some drastic measures for her family to see that she was struggling.
