Five stars. A comprehensive, well-organized resource for those struggling with food addition and those who care about them. The well known twelve step program is enhanced by a scriptural perspective. Scriptural principles along with Scripture verses to meditate upon are found throughout the book.
Probing questions in the "moral inventory" as well as "Real Talk," scenarios that highlight the particular step being discussed make this offering a valuable resource. Issues such as anger, anxiety, approval seeking, bitterness, resentment, childhood trauma, frozen feelings, self pity, self hatred, pride, isolation, jealousy and more will help readers examine their lives for the roots of food addiction.
Dr. Rhona Epstein's "The Satisfied Workbook" promises to encourage and give hope to those struggling with eating issues. Following the twelve steps, the workbook offers practical, step-by-step actions to take to move toward recovery. Epstein shares her own stories and she offers hard self-discovery questions that really make the reader think, challenging them to identify and move through stuck points. At the same time, Epstein offers hope and encouragement, helping readers see that recover is possible, even if it isn't immediate. She gives hope and helps readers see where they could be--which helps them take the necessary steps in the present.
I do think that The Satisifed Workbook is an excellent resource. Rather than read and work through it alone as I did, it might be helpful to work through with a counselor or even with a small group of people who have similar struggles. Sometimes sharing honestly with each other about what you're learning on the journey toward healing can help everyone in the group.
Kuddos to Dr. Esptein for a great resource that offers hope, help, and encouragement.
Note: I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for this honest review.
This book starts off by listing The Twelve Steps. It then connects each step to an action:
Step One: Admitting Defeat
Step Two: Building Faith
Step Three: Surrendering to God
Step Four: Searching Ourselves
Step Five: Being Hones
Step Sics: Willing to Change
Step Seven: Accepting God's Help
Step Eight: Listing Harms
Step Nine: Making Amends
Step Ten: Daily House Cleaning
Step Eleven: Connecting with God
Step Twelve: Walking the Walk
The book aims for "something bigger than changing your calorie count."
Each chapter starts off with a Bible verse, followed by an Overview. There is space to take notes in the margin. "Real Talk" shares a story of someone's struggle in this chapter's focus. "Focusing on You" provides questions to ponder and space to journal about them. There are Recovery Questions, a Challenge, and Scripture Meditations (Bible verses with space to write out how each verse applies to you).

This could not have come at a better time to review. I have been looking for a book like this that can answer so many feelings I had throughout this whole weight loss journey and I have discovered that it is more of a mental journey than a physical journey because you need to have the right mindset in order to fulfill your journey, achieve your goals, and find God's purpose to fulfill your life. I love the activities, meditations and reflections Dr. Rhona Epstein gives in the book and I am definitely not only going to consider this for our collection but for my personal bookshelf collection too and I can't wait to start this journey just in time for the new year.
We will consider adding this title to our R Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
