I abandoned this book after ~50 pages. It's written really poorly. The main character is such a cliche (sad, 40 year old, overweight, single lady) and a martyr (abusive alcoholic mother and she's been "saddled" with caring for her brother with special needs for decades). The whole thing rubbed me the wrong way and was unbearable to read.

Addie is a new and upcoming author who’s first book just hit the bestseller list. As she navigates book signings and launch parties, she gets help from her handsome new publicist, Jameson. Addie isn’t used to all the attention and overnight fame. She’s used to wearing yoga pants and spending time with her brother Owen who has Down syndrome. With fame comes family who want to take advantage of her new wealth and plot to sabotage Addie and Owen. Jameson can’t help but have feelings for Addie and loves being Owen’s “wingman.” Can he set his feelings aside and keep Addie and Owen safe?
I liked this book. It was a quick and cute read. The book changes between different characters points of view and I liked that. I found it a little predictable but it was still a fun read.
Her Turn didn't grip me the way I had hoped. It just sort of...fell flat...which was super disappointing because I loved the premise!
I really couldn't get on with this book which is a huge shame! I tried to read as much as I could but ended up DNF-ING at 20% because I just wasn't interested in the story. I can see how other people would love it, as there were aspects that were fascinating but for me it wasn't for me.
Started off as a cute book, but did not have an engaging plot. The chatacters became hard to relate to, and the narrative a bit repetitive.
A nice, easy read which doesn't tax you too much. I think the main character is relatable to many women now and her experiences along with how they have shaped her are well developed.
Her friendships and relationship with her brother are heartwarming and the twist in the plot was unpredictable which held my interest.
I think the ending and resolving the big secret was a little rushed and it seemed a little to easily resolved, particularly with their ready acceptance of the mystery relative back into their lives but overall a good read with some laugh out loud moments.
I started off really liking and enjoying this book.
Addie has written her own book and she is living in an apartment with her brother Owen who has Down Syndrome.
She has sent her manuscript off to her publishing/well-connected friend Nina and all of a sudden, when the book is published, Addie is hailed as a media superstar and is needed for book tours, radio broadcasts and television appearances.
Addie has enjoyed a quiet life up until now, even if it has been bereft of much parental love. Her Dad scarpered shortly after her brother was born and since her mother's death, the two siblings have stuck together. Addie doesn't believe in herself and yet she is a feisty and funny individual, her love for and determination to protect Owen an endearing quality.
The story is basically a romantic tale between Addie and publicist Jameson. There are parts that appealed to the lover of love stories in me, but overall there were too many American based colloquialisms that ended up in a repetitive loop that, at the beginning I barely noticed, and by the end were rather irritating.
It isn't a straightforward relationship between the 40 somethings and in fact there's a huge question mark over whether there will be a relationship at all as both are running from their emotions and scared to admit they might be falling for one another. The 1970 born, raised on ladybird classics, where the damsel in distress is always rescued by the handsome prince and they live happily ever after, idealist in me, did swoon somewhat at Jameson's protectiveness of Addie and Owen. Not at all the right stance to admit to, and certainly not in front of my own girls, but this is an honest review!
So, in summary, plenty that did appeal, and I liked the way that there were a fair few obstacles on life's rose-petal strewn path, with an interesting mystery surrounding Addie's cousin's wife and a senator. These aspects kept me turning the pages, but ultimately, by the finish, I was more out of love with the book than I was in love. Maybe my young teenage self would have liked it more.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review before publication.
I really wanted to like this book! I mean look at that cover! The blurb sounded so cute. Unfortunately, I DNF’d around 35%. I usually power through books and hardly ever DNF but I couldn't connect with the story, the characters, or the insta-love. I did however find the relationship between the MC and her brother sweet. I felt that the MC’s monologue was too self deprecating and confusing. The multiple POVs ended up adding the the confusion.
Thank you NetGalley for an eARC in exchange of an honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley for the early copy of this in exchange for a review.
I’m dnfing this one pretty early in. It seems poorly written and I already hate the snide comments about people being overweight. Not worth reading.
I think even two stars is generous here 🤷🏽♀️ it wasn’t a great book, you know exactly what’s going to happen and the endless references to chubby girls and the amount of “smirking” (there are other words to choose!) just became a bit difficult to read towards the end. However I like short chapters and there was plenty of those! I wouldn’t recommend.
This book was such a fun Read. It reminded me of a rom-com and that is a compliment. Addie was such an nice main character and I loved reading her story. Jameson was so cute and caring. Owen is now one of my favorite book characters ever and I loved the Down syndrome representation. And yes this book made me cry
There were things I loved about this book and things that I didn't. I loved that the main character had a brother with down syndrome who was a huge part of the story and that he was portrayed so well. I didn't love the actual plot/love interest. It was a bit flat and I didn't like the POV changing the way it did. It just didn't flow. Not a bad book, just not for me. But it is worth giving it a shot, it may be the book for you.
Woman in her early 40's finally gets her big break getting her novel published. She is trying to cope with being in the spotlight, falling for her publicist and coping with rotten family coming out of the woodwork due to her fame.
The effort was made and fell flat. I think it needed more editing.. Jameson was illogical in his infatuation with this girl. It happened too quickly and didn't actually make sense.
This just wasn't the book for me. I found it hard to like the characters and the story just didn't flow for me. I found It hard to visualise what was going on. I did enjoy the aspect about disabilities and appreciated that It had been included and I'm sure plenty of people will enjoy the story just not me.
Pros:
Love the cover - though it's not completely representative of the characters in the book. I enjoyed that the main character, Addie was older than most heroines. And for the most part, Addie was relatable. She'd lost her job and was trying to finally follow her dreams. It was inspiring.
Cons:
I didn't like the multiple perspectives. From the cover to the blurb, this book seems to be marketed as a rom-com. It reads like women's fiction. Nothing wrong with that but I felt like it was misleading.
Addie has big "not like other girls" vibes. It was annoying, especially considering how old she is. I would have labeled her as purposely immature but no, the author seemed focused on making Addie stand out from the rest of the pack because she didn't enjoy dressing up and liked her comfortable writer's life. SO many women enjoy staying indoors and simply reading or writing. Characters don't have to be special to be unique!
The romance didn't click for me. Our hero was stiff. I get he was supposed to be grumpy but there was no charm. It hard to pull off being aloof and charming, so I wasn't completely surprised I couldn't get on board with this couple.
Overall, I think this book needed to go through another couple of edits. It feels like a first draft. The premise was great and the packaging (cover & blurb) sells this thing. Unfortunately, the content is lacking and often rambly.
First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for an advance copy of this book.
Addie has her life turned on its head when the novel she's been working on becomes an overnight sensation. However, with her new found fame, she finds people from her past crawling out of the woodwork. Her spineless cousin Michael and his wife Dorothy are clearly there for one thing - the money.
Enter Jameson, Addie's publicist...and protector. What starts as a snarky work relationship quickly turns to more.
Will Addie be able to handle all the stress and unexpected visitors to her life? Will Jameson cross the line from publicist to something more personal?
The idea was great but the writing was just terrible and all of the characters sucked. Many of them felt the same. There was too much telling and not enough showing.
I really enjoyed the story of Jameson and Addie, but I felt the writing was a bit immature. I liked seeing Addie as an independent 40-something female, but her character had some major issues that I felt were unnecessary. She had family issues that she knew were wrong, but continued to enable her cousins. I loved Addie and Owen's relationship and how independent Owen was. Jameson and Owen immediately developed a relationship and I loved that Jameson treated him with the respect and independence Owen deserved. I had to push myself to finish this but Owen definitely was my favorite character.
Such a sweet book. Lighthearted and loveable characters. Thank you for letting me read this one. Super enjoyable. I hope people enjoy it as much as I did! ☺️
I was really looking forward to reading this and the blurb really caught my attention but feel I couldn’t get sucked into the story, i DNF at 40% I didn’t really like the writing style or how the book was going and really struggled to try enjoy it.
Thanks to netgalley and publisher for allowing me to read and review.
