I am very sad to post such a low rating on this audiobook. "5-Minutes Really True Stories for Bedtime" looks like a really interesting listen, but the description and reality do not match. TO BE CLEAR, this is not a rebuke on the book itself, which is fine, albeit a tad boring. This commentary is on an ARC to update the blurb. When I downloaded this audiobook, I expected stories, not five minutes of facts being thrown at me. These are presented by a great narrator, but are not what I expected when presented with a description of fun bedtime stories. Please update the blurb to be more accurate to the reality so people can better understand what they are starting.
This was a fun an unique bedtime story book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My three year old liked the voice but the stories were a bit old for him. Maybe six months or a year down the road and he will love it like I do.
Big thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook!
The audiobook is filled with 30 short stories related to sleep for children. From bears to astronauts, and from the Egyptians to lullabies, the audiobook takes you on a whole journey! The connection between sleep and the subject of the short story was always there, sometimes in the most creative ways. The audiobook is filled with fun facts, that are really true. I'm a 21-year-old and even I learned so many new things! My boyfriend (who's an ecologist) was even proud of me when I named all the new things I learned about owls and bats!
The narrator did an excellent job. I never drifted off while listening, even when driving home after a long day of work. The voice and the tone are catching but calming, the ideal combination for bedtime stories.
I highly recommend this book, whether it's for your kids or for yourself, I'm sure you'll enjoy it ;)
This book was interesting and my daughter climbed into bed without a fuss and actively listened to it. The narration was also soothing enough that she was able to fall asleep to it. There are lots of interesting facts related to sleeping in this book.
Tons of trivia regarding sleep in 5 minute-ish segments.
Lots of bits of information about sleep; and everything sleep related (targeted for children).
Who knew frigatebirds fly for days and can sleep while they are sleeping? I didn’t.
And that ... snails can sleep for years. In 1846 a desert snail from Egypt had been given to a British museum who had glued it to a display. The snail woke up 4 years later, woke up ate some cabbage and lived another 2 years.
The narrator does an amazing job reading this book with a perfect mix of excitement and pre-bedtime calmness. Many sounds are also incorporated into this audio and keeps things interesting. Really well done.
The last chapter "Lullabies Around the World" stole my heart. I would pay for this book just to play the lullabies over and over. Stole my heart! 1800 stars to the to the narrator
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advance read copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I have a confession to make. I didn’t listen to the stories in this book at bedtime. I was going to save them, but I rand out of stuff to listen to during the workday and thought I’d start, but when I started I couldn’t stop.
I LOVE Joanna Lumley’s voice. She’s British with a melodic voice that’s perfect for bedtime stories. Plus, these stories are short and full of interesting facts that all kids will love, from how astronauts sleep on the space station to how sharks sleep in the depths of the ocean. This audiobook was a pleasant way to spend a couple of work hours, but this would absolutely be perfect to divide up and listen to with your little one at bedtime.
It’s out now, so if you’re looking for new and cool things to add to your bedtime routine, definitely give this one a try.
I really enjoyed listening to this digital audiobook. I’m not sure it would help me fall sleep as the stories were interesting and the narrator’s voice is animated and enjoyable. It is relaxing to listen too and I did find it entertaining.
Facts are not bedtime stories. I’m sorry I had to say this. If the book tries to put children to sleep with boring information, then the books great. I hoped to find a story that had facts in it and that would be educative and fun at the same time, not facts that are just presented. This book has the wrong title and it’s miss understood
I received an advanced copy of this audiobook, from the publisher through netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. I absolutely enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The narrators did a great job reading this book. The author did a great job writing this book. The pacing of each story is great. It keeps your attention from the first minute. I would recommend listening to this audiobook to anyone and everyone. This audiobook is in stores now for $12.99 (USD).
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
This is a fantastic book for class, for hlmework assignmet or just for home (own children, nephews and nieces ... small neighbours... you name it). I really enjoyed it and I believe I'll be using it soon in class
My kids loved this!! Will definitely be buying this from audible as it's a book I can put on over and over for them. Thanks so much for allowing us to listen to it.
This is an excellent audiobook for children containing nonfiction bedtime stories. There are thirty 5-minute stories included. The narrator presents these stories in an engaging but still calming voice. I recommend this for curious children who will learn a lot of fun facts about sleeping. There were even some facts that I didn't know.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to this! All opinions are my own.
This was a very interesting book, informative and entertaining. As the tag line suggests, the book covers 30 interesting stories related to bedtime. And the range is indeed quite vast, as the stories go from sleeping styles to types of beds to snores to nocturnal animals to cosmic objects to astronauts. Basically, anything and everything related to bedtime or night time has been included. This reduces any chance of monotony and keeps the children wondering about where the book will go next.
The content of each story is straightforward and easy to understand. It works suitably for its target audience, children aged 4 to 8.
As this is an encyclopaedic kind of book, I can’t help but feeling that some of the stories would have been better enjoyed if the book were read instead of heard. Topics such as sleeping styles or space-related facts are definitely more fun and better understood by children if visual. At the same time, the narrator does a wonderful job bringing the book to life. She reads the stories in an enthusiastic yet calming voice, something that will create the perfect ambience for little listeners before they nod off to dreamland. The sound effects such as bird calls and cosmic beats further enhance the audiobook experience.
Each story is just 5 minutes long and will be the perfect pre-bedtime lullaby for your little one, leading to superior knowledge and sweeter dreams.
