Pros: Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorite classics. Revisiting this book right after reading The Wife Upstairs reminded me of how genius this book is and how timely it can be in an adaptation. My favorite part of Jane Eyre is when Jane breaks the fourth wall. I also cannot resist a gothic mansion.
Cons: My least favorite part of this book is . . . everything that has to deal with St. John.
One thing unique to this specific edition of Jane Eyre is the lovely illustrations. What book lover doesn't want a beautiful new edition of a favorite classic?!
Love this beautiful copy of this book. It is one of my all time favorite books and it was nice to have the addition. It isn't as impactful on a kindle paperwhite, but i would LOVE a physical copy of this book
An absolutely gorgeous edition of a classic! One for general book collectors, collectors of classics, and would also be a fantastic edition to indulge in if you're reading Jane Eyre for the very first time.
~ Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this title ~
Beautiful edition of Jane Eyre! I loved the watercolor designs of flowers and birds on each page. And of course, I enjoyed the story the same as well.
This is a book I can read over and over again. The classic story itself needs no review, instead I will focus on the edition. The botanical illustrations are charming, and enhance not only the romantic tones of the book, but reflect Jane's character- her appreciation of nature and knowledge and the way she blooms into a woman with the means and desire for self advocacy.
This edition of Jane Eyre is absolutely gorgeous and for a collector or general lover of beautiful editions (as most of us are) this is dreamy, Bastin is exceptionally talented.
If you haven't already read Jane Eyre, this is the edition to go for, it's stunning and the story is as brilliant as ever.
However, as with my review of Pride and Prejudice the only shame is that some of the illustrations aren't directly related to the story/plot/characters, that would really bring this to another level. A small frustration for a beautiful book.
Marjolein Bastin's illustrations are very beautiful and I enjoyed them on all the recent classic editions that feature her work (like Emma and Pride and Prejudice)
I can't wait to get my hands on the actual paper format!
I was provided an advanced digital copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes, all opinions are my own.
One of my favourite books illustrated beautifully. I wasn't sure floral designs would suit this story but the flowers, leaves and occasional fruits used work wonderfully. It has an autumnal tone and darker colouring that compliments the story perfectly.
The story is timeless as ever (I absolutely love it, even though I will always think that Mr. Rochester is at least 60% jerk). Marjolein Bastin's gorgeous nature illustrations are delicate, and fit in with the story so well.
Bastin's work make this another lovely gift idea for a loved one or for your own bookshelf.
My thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing, Marjolein Bastin, and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I don’t think I need to review Jane Eyre since I think most people know what it’s about. But this edition was beautiful along with the other releases by the publisher and artist. This would be a lovely copy for a gift as well.
This book is, of course, the timeless tale of Jane Eyre - a classic. What this edition adds is absolutely beautiful watercolor illustrations. It is definitely an editions all collectors will want as well as fans of Jane Eyre!
Jane Eyre is one of the most wonderful books I've read. I have purchased several copies of this classic novel which I cherish. However what I love about this version is that instead of leaning into the black, fire, flames and spooky elements of the story for illustration, the flowers provide a beautiful addition and highlight the softness of this coming of age story. Thank you for crafting this beautiful addition!
Once again I am amazed with the updated classics covers. This is part of the Marjolein Bastin Classics series which is aimed at helping readers rediscover and reengage with classic literature. I had the chance to view the updated Jane Austen series, which is just stunning. I love how each one represents its book and characters so well. Jane Eyre is no different. The illustrations are beyond beautiful and take readers through the story in an entirely different way. I cannot wait to get all of these into my personal library and I recommend everyone give this a try.
Reviewing for new design since there's not a ton new to say about this (really good) classic book: the illustrations are nice, and the layout looks great. I feel like it's not designed to be a "classic collectible" version, though, so much as to appeal to new potential readers who are, mainly, teenaged girls and young women. Which is totally fine and great! But I wish the obviously contemporary, youthful aesthetic weren't attached to a price tag that would be prohibitive for any of the teens I know.
While the story itself always deserves five stars, this edition merits 3 at best. The illustrations are beautiful but they don't match up to the many seasonal cues in the text. I don't know enough about birds to know whether the ones in the book exist in England.
First, This book is absolutely Lovely. I love the flowers that they have drawn throughout. I think its a lovely touch to a wonderful classic!
Jane Eyre has always been a favorite of mine. I love the story, the characters and the setting. After going through a traumatic and hard childhood of losing her parents and being abused and neglected by her living relatives, she then goes through a hard time at a school for poor girls. The settings for the book leave a bleak and dire outlook for her future and yet, she grows into a lovely person with strong morals. I love the relationship between her and Mr Rochester. The book is a fantastic example of classes at the time and is also a great example of going against the grain.
This is a beautifully illustrated new release of the classic. Small floral touches accompany the text, with great formatting and an easy to read layout.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for kindly providing me with a digital copy of this book for review.
Now then, I have read Jane Eyre a few times before, and seen just about every dramatisation available. So the story is by no means new to me. Incidentally it’s not my favourite by Charlotte Brontë- Villette holds that honour with me. However, when the opportunity to re-read this story in this fabulous new edition presented itself, I jumped at the chance. And even though I have a few other books awaiting to be reviewed, and I really shouldn’t be re-reading before I get to those, I don’t feel so naughty as this is also for review!
At the time of reading this book, here in the U.K. we have just enter the 1067th national covid-19 lockdown (I may exaggerate slightly but you get my point- we’ve been locked down and restricted movements an awful lot just lately) so I think this is perfect time for reading Jane Eyre. After all it does begin with “There was no possibility of taking a walk that day”. If that’s not echoing our current state of being stuck (but safe) at home, I don’t know what else does!
I think I’ve only ever read Jane Eyre in Autumn or Winter and I think the gothic nature of the book really suites the darker, colder months. It’s a true classic that I think most people know something about, and although not everyone will like it, I do think everyone should at least try it so they can begin to understand it’s position in English Literature history, and the thousands of references made to it in other literature and media.
This new edition is truly exquisite- although I only have a digital e-arc so can not comment on the physical final edition. The illustrations by Marjolein Bastin are delectable and add subtle touches of flora and fauna throughout. If you’re looking for illustrations depicting scenes from the novel, then you won’t find those here, but I think I actually prefer this style of illustrations. I always associate the Brontë sisters with nature and the outdoors, so these pictures of plants and birds seem very appropriate to me. I think this book will make an excellent gift for someone to be introduced to Jane Eyre, and will make a wonderful addition to any hardcore fan’s collection of all the hundreds of different editions printed. Will be keeping my eyes peeled so I get to look at the physical copy of this book as well as I think it will be stunning.
Il mio romanzo preferito in un’edizione incantevole: è sorprendente come le splendide illustrazioni rendano l’atmosfera dei mari momenti della vicenda, pur essendo semplicemente fuori.
Da acquistare, però, rigorosamente in cartaceo.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Jane Eyre is an all time classic and everyone should read it. If they do so in this book, even better. The illustrations are absolutely perfect and they match the story perfectly. They even make you want to read more (which, before, never thought it was possible).
