The story picks up seamlessly from its predecessor, delving deeper into Avry's world as she navigates new challenges and alliances. The dynamics between Avry and Kerrick remain engaging, showcasing their individual growth and struggles. Snyder masterfully weaves together multiple plot threads, keeping readers on edge with unexpected twists and turns.

What stands out most is Snyder's ability to breathe life into her characters. Avry's resilience and determination shine through, making her a protagonist worth rooting for. The supporting cast adds depth and intrigue, enhancing the overall narrative.

While some may find the pacing slow at times, the payoff is worth it as the story builds towards a thrilling climax. "Scent of Magic" is a must-read for fans of fantasy and adventure, promising an immersive experience that leaves readers eagerly awaiting the next installment.

It's been a few years since I've read this book, but it has stuck with me. It turned me into a Maria v Snyder fan! Since reading this book I've gone on to read most of her others.
The characters are memorable and the world building is rich and detailed. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

Scent of Magic is the second book in Maria V. Snyder's Healer series. I loved the first book and was looking forward to reading this installment, and I wasn't disappointed,

Avry of Kazan is a favorite character of mine because she is so strong, but not at all cold. In fact, I loved the majority of the characters in this book! Ms. Snyder is a master at world building, but she's just as good at writing characters you just want to root for. And the pacing of the story made this an easy read for me.

In summary, I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read book #3, Taste of Darkness.

Highly recommend. 5/5 stars.

I received a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.

Reviewing old arcs, have tried to read but couldn't get into. Won't be trying again so no formal review will be posted on social media.

Second book in Maria V Snyder's Healers series, follows Avry of Kazan as she accepts her role as the last healer in the Fifteen Realms. She has to stop an army of the undead from razing the kingdom and preventing King Tohon from being the supreme ruler.

The world building is believable and more enriching than the first book and like every second book in the series, the author sets up for the finale with a cliffhanger.

I love Maria V Snyders writing style and her characters. She creates a world that I want to step into even if it is also somewhat scary! I love the relationships that she builds amongst her characters. I am totally invested into the plot and lives of the people in this book. I highly recommend it.

Read this story a while ago, however I remembered loving continuing with Avry on her journey. I know I still love Kerrick, the ending made me cringe and I need to read the last story!

Falls slightly into the trend that Snyder can have with her novels where the second book isn't as wonderful as the first, this is still a fantastic read and I can't wait to reread the series in full at a later date.

This is the second of the Avry of Kazan series, and the second book I’ve read from this author. The first,Touch of Power was, I think, one of Big’s favourite books from last year. I bought it for her to enter one of MiraInk‘s review competitions, sadly she didn’t win, but she was hooked nevertheless.

It took me months to get around to reading it, I wasn’t nearly so tardy with this one 😉 They are ripping yarns that crack along at a great pace. Never wise to get too fond of any characters as they do have a tendency to get bumped off. Death isn’t necessarily as permanent as you might expect though.

Avry is a great lead character. Strong yet feminine, gutsy and by no means perfect. She makes mistakes, sometimes learns from them, and sometimes goes on stubbornly to repeat them anyway. There’s a strong strand of romance in the series, though largely unresolved in this particular book as the main characters spend it far apart. That doesn’t mean you get to miss out on any of the action as the narrative strand skips between them, sometimes rather confusingly. (Actually, that might just be a function of reading it as an ARC on the kindle. I’m hoping the layout is kinder in the printed version and at least starts a new line when the focus changes.)

There’s plenty of action. There’s potential genocide, war between realms, magical discoveries – all the facets of a really strong fantasy novel. I’ve a feeling there’s plenty that will stand a re read when I get round to getting it on paper, which I very much want to do.

For all that Big has read it too, we haven’t discussed it much yet, except to share frustration at the cliff hanger ending. I’m suspecting that that is a trademark of this author, and to be honest, I find it a little off putting. I do want to track down her other series – I think being able to start at the beginning and read to the end without months to wait between instalments might make the whole thing rather more enjoyable.

All in all, this is a great read, and it’s easy to see why Maria V Snyder is such a popular author.
