I thought this was an interesting take about grief. I thought it was an interesting read in the use of the title and theme to talk about grief.
I don't normally pick up poetry but Butcher by Natasha T. Miller is a beautifully written collection of poems about the authors own experiences as both a queer person but also the loss of her brother.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading #ownvoices and poetry.
I must admit I’m not a big poetry reader but this book certainly got my juices flowing with reading the poems. They were beautifully written and set out,
A phenomenal and raw book of poetry about her experience as a queer person and the loss of her brother. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
This was a beautiful poetry collection. My father passed away somewhat recently and I found this a compelling and heartbreaking read. It’s hard to describe but spoke to me intensely as a queer woman experiencing grief.
'Butcher' by Natasha T. Miller is written beautifully. Heartbreaking and powerful. I'm usually wary of poetry written in recent times, but Natasha won me over. Thank you, Netgalley, for this ARC.
I thought this was quite a good book and throughly enjoyed it. I was thought provoking and well written.
An entrancing and beautiful collection of poetry! I think it will be popular especially with the younger crowd.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing this arc for me to review.
The way this collection of poetry is split was truly original and something I enjoyed: they were split into the different parts of a cow.
All these chapters carry connotations of body and life, and means that feelings are channeled through organs.
I highly recommend checking out #ownvoices reviews of Butcher before you decide to skip or pick up this collection.
I read Butcher in one sitting. I was entranced by Natasha's words. This book covers so many challenging topics in a brief time- grief, longing, injustice. Natasha writes an open letter to Raven Symone that will stick with me for a lifetime. I would buy this collection AND give to friends.
A beautiful collection of prose. Miller is open and raw within each piece. This body of work really resonated and invoked an array of emotions.
Miller is a very skilled poet.
I would recommend this collection to readers who enjoyed “Black Girl, Call Home” by Jasmine Mans
Received a copy from NetGalley for an honest review.
Deeply personal, touching on issues of grief/loss, race, sexuality, and family. My favorites were "I see you" and "I learned of grief too late." I was surprised by how short this was but a substantial read. Modern poetry is new to me so perhaps it was this that I'm feeling over the length of the book. I can see myself re-reading this, taking my time with them, reflecting more on my life and the lives of others.
This book was sent to me as an ARC from Netgalley. However, all opinions are of my own.
*TW* for grief.
I feel like this book came at such a good time for me, I have been feeling quite lost and alone lately with my grief and when I picked up Butcher I felt like it was a sign to read it. I was reading the pages and they were resonating with me very deeply.
Such a beautifully written book and definitely worth picking up if you’re also struggling with some type of loss.
"And if the only legacy you leave behind are stories of your resilience, If it is only your children telling stories about how their mother was never given a crown but still moved like a queen"
I want to thank Netgalley for allowing me this poetry book by Natasha T. Miller which I have to say, I loved.
Butcher is very easy to read because of its format, plus it addresses the story of resilience, sisterhood, the BLM movement, the ongoing survival during the daily struggles of being a woman of colour and also gay.
The poetry book is divided into 5 parts that allude to the body parts of a cow, and each of these parts has poems with connotations of body and life and how feelings are channelled into organs.
Being one of my first times reading poetry I must say that Butcher transmitted all the feelings and made me empathize with everything that has happened around our society and if you have the opportunity to read it do it, it is an English is very easy to understand and a very simple reading.
I really liked this collection. From grief, to race, the poems are beautifully written and it feels like the author is allowing the reader a glimpse into their life, their losses and vulnerabilities.
This was a wonderful idea for structuring a book but for me it doesn't really meet the mark as some of the poetry falls a bit flat, it may be better in a spoken word format but it doesn't really come across well on paper.
Look, Butcher is just excellent, and you need to read it. Its poems are beautiful, honest, and visceral. I wish I had more to say, but there it is! Recommended!
"Grief is more contagious than joy"
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this poetry collection in exchange for an honest review!!
Posting my review a bit later than I'd like but what a lovely collection! These poems were beautifully written and filled with heartbreaking moments and moments of strength. I will definitely read more from this author.
Content Warning: murder, grief, homophobia and racism
This is a beautiful book of poems but they're all very sad so grab some tissues. Its short but deep. I thought that naming all the chapters after body parts was clever.
I'm new to reading poetry and Butcher by Natasha T. Miller has certainly not put me off. Poetry like this is an excellent way to gain insight into life experiences different to your own. Although I didn't like every poem there were many that really struck a chord and I will be revisiting. I love that some poems left both emotional and intellectual marks, giving me a deeper and broader understanding of another human being's life.
