This was a lot of fun! Review to follow.
So it has to say a lot that I actually still remember this book 3 years later. To be honest -- I'm updating my netgalley account and realizing the number of books I just forgot to review.
This book was a good twist on the hitchhiker/riding with someone you don't know trope. I started it, put it down, and then when I went back to it months later, I read it all in one sitting. I remember enjoying the dark vibes of a late night drive home, especially in a state of anxiety.
I still grab a Sager book in the summer in 2024, so still a fan.
Riley Sager is known for his thrill ride plots and relatable characters, and Survive the Night appears to have all the classic hallmarks of a successful Sager saga. Unfortunately, this one did not hit for me. The set up is fantastic: college student Charlie Jordan is hitching a ride with Josh Baxter, someone she met through her college ride share board. While this is generally a normal situation, Charlie's campus is being terrorized by a serial killer who struck very close to home for Charlie. It doesn't take long her in ride with Josh to start wondering if he is in fact that killer. The book becomes an exciting closed room mystery with extremely high stakes, but Charlie's internal process is frustrating, and the ending was disappointing. While I enjoy Riley Sager's work and will continue to read what he publishes, Survive the Night was a miss for me.
I will start by saying how much I love Sager and how excited I was to read this book.
For the past four years the serial killer, The Campus Killer, has Wreaked havoc on a small college campus. Most recently Charlie’s best friend was the victim and Charlie has decided she cannot stay at the university in the room she shared with Maddy even one more day. Since this takes place on the early 90s there are no ride share apps so Charlie uses the ride share board to meet Josh who is willing to drive her all the way to Ohio. Shortly after beginning their journey Charlie begins to doubt Josh while we begin to doubt if anything Charlie remembers or says can be believed.
This book has a unique ish timeline as the whole thing takes place over the course of only one night. I did find the first half of the book to be a little drawn out a frustrating as to how much it went back and forth on wether Charlie was living in the now or one of her “movie.” Sager nailed the 90s vibe and it took me back to remember what things were like back before the convinces we have now. I enjoyed the second half of the book much more and it seemed to pick up a lot quicker at that point. I wouldn’t say I was shocked by the twist and the who done it but it was still over all enjoyable.
"Survive the Night" by Riley Sager presents an exhilarating narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats throughout. With a relentless pace and an abundance of plot twists, Sager wastes no time in immersing the audience into a thrilling rollercoaster ride of suspense and mystery. Sager doesn't waste a second dragging things out. It's like being on a high-speed chase with plot twists coming at you left, right, and center.
Now, the story jumps around a bit, but stick with it. However, it all comes together in this mind-bending puzzle that keeps you guessing until the very end. And let's not forget the mysticism woven into the narrative. It adds this whole other layer of intrigue, like peeling back the curtain on something you never knew was there.
there's a Campus Killer on the loose, and charlie finds herself in a car with a stranger from a ride share app so she can get home from college, but what if he's leaving campus for a sinister reason...
it takes place over a single night, so it has that taught, closed-room tension that keeps you HOOKED and flying through the pages to see what the HECK will happen and just how all the twists and turns in the road (pun intended!!!) will turn out. it starts slow but picks up and then races to the finish and will keep you guessing until the very end!
First, I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for allowing my an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This one took me awhile to decide to read. But I am so glad I did. It is about a campus killer who is on the loose and a guilt-ridden girl who although she has seen the killer, can not remember what he looks like. So she takes a ride from a complete stranger at the ride board in her university. Her best friend and college roommate was the latest victim and she has to get away from it all. But the person who is driving her into the darkness, is that person really who he says he is? Is he the campus killer? She makes it past the toll plaza, past the rest area, past the diner, and to the lodge all the while getting wrapped up in the "movies" in her head. Her brains protective mechanism when reality gets too intense. This was a good read!
I think I've realized that Riley Sager is no longer a good fit for me. I loved his earlier books, but his later ones just don't capture my interest.
I couldn't get through this title. It ended up not being for me, but I hope it finds a hope with other readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I don't usually read reviews of books until after I've read them and I'm really glad I didn't before I read Survive the Night. There were too many people complaining about this book and I really don't know why because I enjoyed it quite a bit! It reminded me a little of Dean Koontz's Intensity with the way it took off from the beginning and kept me hooked until the very end. The only part of the book that really drove me crazy was Charlie making the decision to get into a car with someone she doesn't know, even when her gut instinct is telling her something isn't right. There were a few parts that need you to suspend reality a little, but I was fine with those parts, as they really amped up the story. All in all, a good thriller!
Reminiscent of one of my all time favorites, No Exit, Survive the Night is yet another masterpiece penned by Sager. The narrator is so unreliable, yet also so dependable. I truly was at a loss for what to believe sometimes. I read this in just one sitting!
Okay sooooo at first, I didn't get the hate. The first chapter or two wasn't too bad, I didn't agree with all of the characters choices but I was interested and invested. OH boy but did that change. I did NOT hate this book, I actually enjoyed rage reading it to some degree. At first it was upsetting but when I embraced the stupidity it was fun. I do think there were a few interesting ideas, and I did like some of what happened. But there were some big decisions that were made that actively pissed me off.. sooo yeah.. not great.
When I first started this book, I thought it was going to be a quick thriller read. I did not expect to get as invested as I did. I enjoyed the twists and turns, some predictable and others not so predictable. I loved the idea that the main character saw things as movies in her head during moments of stress and that the entire plot spanned over about 24 hours. The ending didn't really do it for me but the rest of the book absolutely outweighed my slight disappointment in it. Would recommend.
Another thriller by Sager. I enjoyed this one although I still think his first few books were better. Regardless I will always pick up his books and doesn't dissapoint.
Survive the Night had such a great premise; a college girl stuck in a car with a potential serial killer. Set in the 90s with no modern technology added an extra element of suspense. While I enjoyed the read, it was a little difficult to get into. The main character, Charlie, is a film connoisseur and often referenced older films or actors I wasn’t familiar with and so had no connection to. She wasn’t particularly likeable and the plot was a little predictable. All in all, I’ve always been a big fan of Riley Sager’s books but while I liked Survive the Night, I didn’t love it like I did his other works.
Another amazing title from Riley Sager. It didn't disappoint. This book was riveting. The characters were complex and their relationships believable and built over the course of the plot. The arc of the storyline was pitched well, and details were fed to the reader at a pace to maintain interest. Highly recommend!
This one was amazing Amazing just like all his books!this one kept me up all night and read it in a sitting
This one was not my favorite Riley Sager, but still a fun journey. I always love his thrillers and they are still solid.
initial thoughts: really enjoyed the 1991 setting, and the overall premise of the book (a car ride home from college with a stranger.) there were lots of twists that I didn’t see coming, which I quite enjoyed.
however, the last page, that ending - NO. I did like how the rest of the story wrapped up, but I didn’t love how Charlie’s “love” story ended.
Riley Sager is an author I’ve come to look forward to releasing a new title. This one kind of missed the mark for me. It didn’t feel like the lead character made any smart decisions and had no sense of self preservation.
This is another classic Riley Sager book. I couldn't put it down because I kept wanting to know what would happen next. I always like to get to the end to see what twist he put in this time. I definitely recommend for thriller and Riley Sager fans.
