We read this to our pre-school class. They all loved the book but none of them (including the teachers) had ever heard the proverb that was being explained: "When spiders unite, they can tie up a lion." Even not knowing this saying previously, the book was still a lot of fun and the kids thoroughly enjoyed it. Hoping to see more fun books in this series.
The pictures was mesmerizing, me and my son both enjoyed working with Sule. Looking forward to meet him again in another book.
Sule the Proverb Detective is a really sweet book that introduces young readers to various proverbs while making the stories interactive and totally engaging. My kids (ages 4 and 6) were captivated by Sule and his adventures and loved finding the hints and lessons along the way.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance e-copy! I can’t wait to buy a physical copy to add to our collection. It will try a lot of use in our house!
Sule the Proverb Detective is a children's picture book which teaches children proverbs through stories. It tackles one proverb (I assume per book in the series) - this edition Sule helps Fara understand the proverb "When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion" by using her own problem as an example. As it's interactive, it makes the child directly engage with the story, and in turn they are able to understand the proverb. Not only does it teach the reader a proverb, it also has themes of kindness, friendship and teaches children the importance of working together! It's only a bonus that the illustrations are wonderful and diverse, as the story itself is so well crafted.
I would recommend this book to children aged 6+.
I’m giving this an “interesting”. I like the way the book was put together, and the activities inside. I even like how the meaning of the proverb is found, even if I have never heard that proverb before.
This was a charming book that combined a life lesson with a seek-and-find. At the beginning of the book Fara is overwhelmed by her to-do list when she runs into her friend Sule who shares a proverb. In order to understand the proverb. Discovering the meaning of the proverb becomes a game for Fara and the reader as they chase down Sule, encountering friends along the way. This is a great interactive book to teach children about the importance of working together and accepting help from friends and has a fun interactive element. The illustrations are engaging and depict a diverse cast of characters.
Cute book! It taught me a proverb I didn't know. Also I liked how there was so much representation in the drawings, especially seeing the kid in the wheelchair
Very cute story about an African proverb, a young detective who likes to help his friends, and learning that you don't have to take on everything yourself. The art looked a little cut and paste at times but the market setting was vibrantly drawn and visually very interesting and the lesson was wholesome.
"When spiders unite, they can tie up a lion."
This is the the proverb Sule uses to help his friend, Fara, when she's overwhelmed with party preparations. With Brittnie Brotzman's vibrant illustrations and Rawl's engaging story, SULE the PROVERB DETECTIVE will quickly become a favorite among kids and teachers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Ener House Publishers for this delightful e-arc.
This is an excellent book! As a parent, I am always looking for books that feature protagonists of African descent., Three things stand out in Sule the Proverb Detective. First, the author and illustrator do a phenomenal job of affirming Black people and culture. The images are attractive. The culture is well-represented. The interaction between characters is ideal. Second. proverbs are critical learning tools. In Western education, they are used very little. Sule the Proverb Detective, provides parents and educators with a compelling vehicle for teaching the meaning and application of a well-known African proverb. Finally, this book will get plenty of use in our home. Each year during Kwanzaa, we read different stories to reflect on each of the seven principles. Sule the Proverb Detective, is perfect for reflecting on the principle of Ujima, collective work and responsibility. Thanks, Ms. Rawls for this excellent resource!
Absolutely loved this! I love the way the interactiveness and the adorable illustrations give you a feel for the culture, and the theme of working together - plus the whole proverb premise is so fun and Sule is so funny and sweet! Definitely a series to keep an eye on.
Entertaining way to help learn proverbs. The mystery aspect helped keep my children engaged in the store and wanting to learn more with Sule. Definitely will continue to read this series with my children.
My child’s review:
Sule and Fara are so fun to learn with.
Would recommend for at home learning and church studies.
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.***.
This book introduces children to what a proverb is and is a story that is built around a proverb. I enjoyed it and I think children would too. Throughout the book, readers are invited to search for things within the illustrations. I think this would appeal to school-age children and adults to share. My thanks to Netgalley and publisher for a digital copy in exchange for my review.
This is such an entertaining book! I loved reading about clever Sule and her friends. I'm sure many children learn about proverbs after reading Sule! I'd love to read more.
This was one big LOL read!
Children often look at proverbs and idioms literally. This story is a great way of getting them to understand the wisdom of proverbs. Of course, there is only one proverb in this book so I presume each book of the series will take up one proverb.
The story is told in a very interactive way, with little activities peppered throughout the book to keep little minds occupied. The illustrations are oh-so-adorable! I really loved this idea of explaining a proverb through a picture book and look forward to more books in the series.
