This book had a few stories going at the same time as the mystery was being investigated. The main character can be annoying sometimes due to her OCD.
Maddie Day is one of my favorite authors due to her Country Store series which is my absolute favorite but this second installment in her Cozy Capers Book Group mystery is the first I've read and it certainly won't be my last.
I enjoyed the characters and the plot and I am eager to read further in this series, starting at the beginning. The amateur sleuth in this series, Mac Almeida, owns a Cape Cod bicycle shop and there are plenty of other interesting characters as well.
Definitely a series (and author) I would recommend.
I received a free copy from Tantor Audio and voluntarily reviewed it.
I read the first book in this series and then for the second book I ended up deciding to switch to audio. This series is narrated by Rachel Dulude who is one of my favorite narrators so far, so I decided to go to audio. It took me a bit of time early on in this book to make the switch and get used to how everyone sounded, but once I was through the first few chapters I was into the story and the audio worked great for this book.
In Murder at the Taffy Shop Mac and her friends have another mystery to solve. Beverly, a women who not many people liked, is killed and Gin and Mac find her body. Gin becomes a suspect in the murder while Mac and the rest of the cozy capers book group get involved in trying to solve the mystery. I liked the mystery, there were some possible suspects from the start, but I wasn’t quite sure who did it. I liked how we got more pieces of the mystery and suspects, but no suspects can be crossed off till the end when we find out who the murderer is. I wasn’t surprised by who the murderer was, but it was great seeing it play out. I didn’t really care for how the detective kept telling Mac not to get involved and how Mac kinda went back and forth on investigating or not, even though it felt realistic. I liked how it all came together at the end and how the danger scene at the end got resolved.
I liked reading this book, just like Maddie Day’s other series it has a nice mix between the real life and events and the mystery. I enjoy reading about Mac’s daily life and her job running her bike shop. In this book she and her boyfriend Tim are struggling with a decision about their future and whether to take kids or not. Tim wants kids, but Mac isn’t sure. I found Tim could act a bit harsh at times and I am still not sure whether I like the romance or am hoping she ends up with someone else. I am a bit frustrated that this plot line didn’t get resolved as I wanted to know in which direction things are going. I thought the last chapter would resolve it, but it didn’t. They do patch things up, but no final decisions is made.
There is a wonderful group of side characters. Mac has a whole family around her, her mother and father as well as her brother and niece. Then there are the cozy capers book club members and her engineer in the store. She also has a parrot called Belle, who is so fun to read about. It’s not difficult remembering who is who as everyone has their own personality, although there certainly are a lot of characters especially when you add in the murder suspects.
I am glad I switched to the audio version. I like how Rachel Dulude narrated this one and the way she does the voices for all the characters. I like how the voices fit the characters and things like her niece who talks with a lisp or the way the parrot talks all add some flavor to the book. I really enjoyed the audio version of this book and will be continuing the rest of the series in audio if possible.
To summarize: This was a great book. I liked the mix of daily life and the murder mystery. The mystery was interesting with a few clear suspects, the mystery moves forward, but no gets scrapped of the list till the reveal at the end. I wasn’t surprised at who had done it, but it was great to see how things played out. I like reading about Mac and her work at the bike shop and seeing her interact with her friends and family. I am still on the fence about the romance and in this book she and Tim argue a bit, sadly by the end of the book I am still not sure what Mac decides. There are a lot of characters and it’s fun to read about them. I especially liked Mac’s parrot Belle. I am glad I switched to audio for this series as I really enjoyed listening to this one. I liked the different voices for the characters that the narrator did and it was pleasant to listen to this one.
A Cozy Caper Book Group Mystery Book 2.
Mac and her Friend, Gin, find summer resident, Beverly Richard dead in front of the Medical Clinic. Did she die of natural causes or did someone murder her?
I really enjoyed this cozy mystery because of the characters, the vocabulary used, and the descriptive imagery. I loved that Mac owned a parrot instead of a dog or cat. It was very creative and added interest to the story. Belle(the parrot) was better than a watchdog at warning Mac of strangers. I also liked that Mac was an active member of her community. She was always interacting with someone and leading a normal life like everyone else. I was very appreciative of all the suspects that had a motive to kill Beverly. It makes the puzzle of figuring out whodunnit more challenging and the reveal at the end a bigger surprise. I also liked that the recipes for some of the foods mentioned in the book are at the end of the book. I can’t wait to try Tulia’s Cod Cakes and Tim’s Bear Claws! This is a great series for cozy mystery fans!
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Love what I read so far of this series and I love the characters but my all time favorite character is the African Grey parrot, who will have you laughing at what it says
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to review this book.
Another wonderful cozi mystery. I loved it!
This author is one of my favorite cozy mystery writers. She weaves these stories in a way that makes you feel as if you are part of the story. I found myself reading through this book in one sitting. I could not help myself it was that good.
Mac is obviously my favorite character in Murder at the Taffy Shop!!
MacKenzie (Mac) owns a Bike Sales/Rental/Repair shop in a quaint Cape Cod village. Her best friend, Gin, owns a Taffy Shop near Mac’s shop. Gin and her boyfriend have been invited to a party at the home of Beverly Ruchart, a wealthy genealogist. After being insulted by Beverly a few times, Gin and her boyfriend leave the party early. The following morning Mac heads over to Gin’s shop to do their daily walk before opening their shops when Gin discovers Beverly’s dead body. Once the police learn about Gin and Beverly’s interaction the night before, Gin will become their prime suspect. Beverly had been rude to many of the locals, so there was no shortage of suspects. A member of Mac’s book club finally convinced her to investigate and clear Gin’s name. Also on Mac’s plate is her relationship with her boyfriend, Tim. Tim gives her an ultimatum to either decide to move in together and start a family or go their separate ways.
I have read almost all of Maddy Day/Edith Maxwell’s books and have found them all well-written and plotted with a great cast of interesting and believable characters.
A selection of interesting and delicious-sounding recipes is also included.
This is the 2nd book in a fun cozy series. The interesting characters include a minister, an astrologist, a candy maker and a bike shop owner and they live in a quirky town. The mystery flows well and there are plenty of suspects to consider.
This is the second book in this series and it is even better then the first. This series has great characters and is set in a wonderful location. I cannot wait for the next book.
Mac owns a bicycle shop while her friend Gin has a taffy shop in a cute tourist town. When Gin finds a body outside her taffy shop, she is the prime suspect. Mac, being a good friend, helps to clear her name. I had not read the previous book in this series, but I had no issues with this one. Aside from the fact that Gin is the most ridiculous suspect for this murder, I enjoyed the book. Mac is definitely a complicated character, but I look forward to see how things develop for her going forward.
Murder at the Taffy Shop by Maddie Day
Book #2: Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery
Source: NetGalley and Kensington
Rating: 4/5 stars
Beverly Ruchart is not known for her winning personality. In fact, with the exception of just a handful of people, Beverly isn’t really liked by most people in her sleepy little seaside town. Her prickly personality has made her something of a recluse so when she winds up dead outside the local medical clinic, there aren’t many in town who are surprised.
The two who are surprised are Mac Almeida and her best friend, Gin. Shortly before their morning walk, Gin and Mac find Ms. Ruchart crumpled on the sidewalk with no obvious explanation for her passing. Though Gin and Mac only found the body, it soon becomes clear – evidence! – that Gin is the prime suspect on the short list held by the police. Gin will be the first to admit Ms. Ruchart wasn’t her favorite person, but she certainly had no cause to murder the poor, old lady.
Once again, Mac and her cozy mystery group are drawn into the investigation to save one of their own. What the group quickly finds is that not only was Ms. Ruchart generally not liked by the community, but she was also disliked by most of her remaining family. What’s more, the dearly departed was in possession of quite a large estate which always brings out the vultures and exposes motives. With just a few pokes and prods, Mac and her friends find there are motives galore for the death of Ms. Ruchart and sorting through the mess is going to take real skill and determination.
The Bottom Line: I had a bit more fun reading this book than the first as all the groundwork was already in place. The characters and the setting were already familiar making those details a garnish rather than the meat of the story. I did quite like the plot of this story, but I also found myself very invested in one of the smaller plotlines, Mac’s relationship with her boyfriend. On top of trying to solve a murder, Mac also has to deal with some hard questions that have arisen in her personal life. While I liked all these things, there was one bit of this book that had me absolutely in stitches . . . . Belle the African Grey parrot! Belle is a delight throughout the book, but that last scene or two at the end really brought everything together in a most hysterical way. If nothing else, I am coming back for book three because of the bird 😊
Cape Cod bike shop owner Mac Almeida and her friend Gin meet up each morning for an invigorating morning walk. But one morning, Mac is surprised to find Gin near her taffy shop hovering over the body of genealogist Beverly Ruchart. When the autopsy shows that Beverly had been poisoned, Gin becomes a prime suspect since she had brought a box of taffy to a dinner party at Beverly's house.
Beverly had annoyed a lot of people in their Cape Cod community but who wanted her dead? Mac and her Cozy Capers book group are determined to help the local police find the real killer. Despite getting warnings to stop her snooping, Mac and her gang continues their informal investigation. Thankfully, Mac's chatty African gray parrot Belle and her Alexa device come to the rescue when the killer confronts Mac at her home.
This was another enjoyable entry in the Cozy Capers Book Group mystery series.
I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and Kensington with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and provided this review.
This cozy mystery stars Mac an obsessively neat bike shop owner on Cape Cod. She had some big pluses in my opinion for an amateur sleuth. Ir rally loved her pet parrot Belle (probably my favorite character), and I loved the book club that bands with her to help solve murders. Overall the mystery in this one wasn’t bad, but it seemed pretty clear between the red herrings and the actual culprit. I found this book to be a little repetitive for my tastes both with clues and with the personal drama. Mac goes for her daily power walk with her friend Gin, but finds Gin bent over a body in the alley. Despite multiple warnings from law enforcement Mac places her in the right place at the right time to “happen” upon the suspects to try to get clues to figure out who killed Beverly.
I enjoyed reading another fun Cozy Capers Book Group mystery by Maddie Day. Mac is a great character and I also enjoyed how her family members get involved in solving the mystery. The author chose a great setting and I loved reading about all of the local shops. There were some red herrings that kept me guessing until the end. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
Mac's stars are aligned again for her to find another dead body. This time it happens to be a churlish local that had beef with just about everyone. The worst part of the case if her bestie's taffy was the vehicle for the murder. Can Mac get her bestie out of the sticky situation?
I read both book one and two back to back and I am glad I did. It let me get very immersed in the lives of Mac and her family and friends. I am excited to report that book three is to be released in November 2021.
I love that Mac has a bike shop on Cape Cod. As I read I feel like I am on vacation without leaving my couch. The author does a wonderful job of describing the scenery. One can almost smell the ocean and feel the wind in your hair.
There are a few curse words but nothing too bad. No detailed sex scenes but unmarried sex alluded so if you have a teenager you would prefer not to read this then it might not be for them. Personally, I would have no issues letting a teenager read this series.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. All opinions expressed above are entirely my own.
Another excellent edition to a wonderful series! Full of twists and turns that leaves you wanting more and enjoying each moment until the end when the killer is caught!
This series has great characters, including the protagonist Mackenzie "Mac" Almeida, and her wonderful African gray parrot named Belle. Mac is a smart, funny, inquisitive main character. She walks most mornings with her best friend Gin, and in on one of these mornings Gin finds the a body on the sidewalk while waiting for Mac. This is where the mystery begins. Mac and her friends in the Cozy Mystery Book Club get involved in solving the mystery because Gin is a suspect. I loved how the clues were uncovered and how all of the book club members work together to find information. There were several red herrings included in this great mystery. This book could be read as a stand alone, but the first book was also a great read.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Very enjoyable cozy with the kind of quirky heroine that is often found in private investigator novels, which makes it an interesting blend between the two.

Murder at the Taffy Shop by Maddie Day is the second book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series. I had not read the first book, but was easily able to read this as a standalone cozy mystery.
This book was so fun! I loved the Cape Cod setting. (It brought me back to my childhood in New England!) The characters were fascinating and so much fun! This book made me smile! Also, the mystery was great with a few red herons!
I can't wait to read the other books in the series! If you love cozy mysteries, I would definitely recommend this book!
I'm so grateful to Maddie Day, Kensington Books, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.
