I love books set in Salem and I love the well thought characters in this series.

Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress: A Salem B&B Mystery
By Traci Wilton
Kensington
April 2021

Review by Cynthia Chow

As the owner of a B&B in Salem, Massachusetts, Charlene Morris is always eager to promote celebrations highlighting the town’s tourist-attracting historical moments. For the 4th of July the theater troupe Salem Stage Right is presenting a one-time-only performance of “Salem’s Rebels,” when revolutionaries stole and hid cannons from the British troops. When one of the actors falls dead from a very real bullet though, a shadow is cast over the entire event endangering not just their tourist prospects but the safety of those involved in the play. Charlene had been recording the play for her houseghost Jack Strathmore, who would have attended in person if he was an actual physical person able to form outside of the B&B. While studying the video helps Charlene narrow down suspects and angles of the shot, police evidence quickly reveals that the gunshot that took down Madison Boswell came not from a musket but from a very modern handgun. Overheard conversations and attending Madison’s funeral lead Charlene to a heartbroken fiancé looking for the missing engagement ring, a contentious cast, and unhappy family members. Madison’s use of hypnotism to torture and prank others adds to the list of motivations for those wanting her gone, and Charlene is determined to discover the truth and serve out justice.

This 4th in the series has Charlene spending more time away from Jack than in the previous novels, although he continues to complicate her romantic prospects with his hauntings. As handsome and charming as he may be, his deceased status tends to make him a less than ideal boyfriend. That doesn’t mean that he won’t sabotage Charlene’s time alone with Detective Sam Holden, who may not want her in his investigations but does appear to enjoy having more of her in his life. The Salem setting is always a fun setting for its wiccan-tourism, although here a twist is added with the results of cruel hypnotherapy. Charlene’s friends and staff at the B&B are worthwhile attractions themselves, with their banter and relationships fun and admirable. Readers will be eager to see whether Jack continues to haunt Charlene’s life, and how this will affect her own prospects for the future. Paranormal romance, quirky setting, and an unpredictable mystery make this an entertaining romp in a unique series by this dynamic writing duo.

Every time I read one of the books in this series, I'm more in love with Dr. Jack the ghost, lol. As if he couldn't get any more awesome or funny, he sure proved it in this book! Then there's that human cutie named Sam. I can honestly see why Charlene has such a hard time and loves each one of them in their own way. Although Sam believes in tough love and learning things the hard way, as Charlene was going to find out later in the book.

I had a feeling about midway or more toward the end of whodunit, but boy was I wrong! The showdown was pretty epic, and a happy ending was had by all...except for the perp and dead woman that is. I really love Avery's character and how she's changed and grown. I'm willing to bet that Charlene wishes she could have adopted the girl had she known her when she was younger, but at least they got some good quality time together outside B&B working hours. It was fun to see Charlene kick back and actually go somewhere with her girlfriends too for a change. I always hate for books in this series to end, because it means I have to wait patiently on the next one!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

She is a B&B host with the most and techno savvy ghost. This was my first Salem B&B Mystery but it will not be my last, it was easy to keep p with the characters thanks to the sprinkling of backstory. I will be going back and reading the series starter so I can see how Charlene met Jack and solved his mysterious death. I really enjoyed how the story included a smidge of stereotypical Salem i.e. wiccan/witch aspect through Charlene's friend, Kass. Ah but Kass is not the sorceress of which we speak, no that would be the victim, that would be Madison Boswell, who was not well liked by many but definitely captivated by others. With this group of thespians there is as much drama as there are suspects. Charlene does a great job of helping Detective Sam Holden, who seems to appreciate the help she gives by passing on the info that she and Jack are able to gather from internet searches and asking questions. The story starts out with a historical play and ends with a Shakespeare classic and in between Charlene manages to take care of the B&B, provide wonderful happy hour snacks such as the warm chicken dip and white sangria. A good deal of red herrings can be found in this red, white, and blue Independence Day cozy mystery.

In this fourth instalment in the Salem B&B Mystery series by Traci Wilton, Charlene Morris is a B&B owner and widow who bought an old mansion. She runs "Charlene's" in Salem, Massachusetts, a historic small town and she enjoys the company of Jack Strathmore, the progressive ghost of the former homeowner.

Charlene acts as a group guide for her guests, taking them to local events in addition to providing lodgings and breakfast. Charlene and her guests attend a Fourth of July celebration; as part of the festivities, they watch 'Salem's Rebels' a one-off showing of a play depicting a historic event. During the second act the ravishingly beautiful star of the play, Madison Boswell is shot dead while on stage in front of the entire audience. Charlene and her resident ghost Jack assist Detective Sam Holden in identifying the culprit. So who might have wanted to kill her?

In this cozy tale, Traci Wilton wastes no time presenting the reader with the murder very early on. The author's characters are very engaging, their presences jumping from the pages and by the time I finished reading I felt I had gotten to know them quite well, whilst wanting to meet up with them again. Charlene is curious, smart, friendly, and she seems very genuine. The diverse supporting characters were a hit for me as well; from the staff at the B&B, Minnie and Will, to the B&B residents and the flirty Detective Sam Holden, and others, the reader is treated to well-crafted characters. I liked the romantic frisson between Charlene and Sam. Whilst the storyline builds upon the previous books, the novel can easily be enjoyed as an individual read.

The author gave me everything I desire from a fantastic cozy mystery making it easy to escape right into the humorous, light story and I appreciated the clever way Salem’s setting and culture were embedded into the tale. The suspects popped, the pacing was even and there were more than enough twists and surprises along with a mega climactic finish. If you enjoy a great ghostly cozy you need to check out this series. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress and I can't wait to read the first in the series, Mrs. Morris and the Ghost, as well as revisiting Charlene and Jack in book five, Mrs. Morris and the Vampire.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

After buying a house in Salem, Massachusetts, for opening a B&B, Charlene Morris finds the house came with an undisclosed amenity -- a devishly handsome ghost of a doctor murdered there. Jack, who is only visible to Charlene, becomes a close friend and mystery-solving collaborator through the course of the series. In the fourth book, Charlene and several of her house guests attend a community theater production where the lead actress, Madison, is shot during the play. Now Madison was not a particularly nice person or good actress, but she had the ability to bewitch others. As Charlene learns, almost everyone had a motive to murder Madison, but figuring out who did it will keep everyone guessing, including the reader. Engaging characters and a good mystery provide a truly entertaining read.

The fourth book in the Salem B&B series has continued to mesmerize me and made this series my favorite of all time! Authors Patrice Wilton and Traci Hall have combined their magnificent writing talents for this magical series that will draw you in further with each book!
Charlene, Salem's sleuth extraordinaire, alongside Sam, the handsome detective, find themselves looking into the shooting death of a beautiful actress during a Independence Day performance. The biggest question is whether it was an accident or intentionally done? Will Charlene help Sam find the answers to this mystery or become a victim herself? As usual, Jack, the resident ghost, will be looking over Charlene's shoulder and adding his opinions as she investigates! Join the excitement as this amazing series continues, to see for yourself, these lovable characters come to life! I can't wait to read the next book in my favorite series!

Charlene is ready to celebrate all the 4th of July festivities with her B&B guests with a day at the park watching the local theater group's production of Salem Rebels, when an innocent slip of the hand and a drop of a musket leaves the lead actress, Madison, dead.

Of course, all is not what it seems, and Michelle, a traveling nurse, who happens to be a guest of Charlene's B&B, quickly accesses that Madison's death was not from a musket....which means that her death wasn't an accident, but a murder! As it turns out, Madison wasn't well liked by most of the acting troupe, which gives Charlene an obvious lists of suspects, but, that's not all, the list grows with a jilted ex-fiancée, and an estranged brother.

Charlene, of course, is encouraged by Detective Sam to let him do his job and to stay out it. However, he seems resigned to the fact that Charlene isn't capable of minding her business, so his role becomes a bit less rigid, but more present, in an effort to keep her safe - she's her own worst enemy in this regard.

Can Sam solve the case and arrest the murderer before Charlene gets herself in too deep (again)?

Another adventure with Mrs. Morris, her friends, Charlene’s, and of course Salem. The time is summer, 4th of July, and a lot of the plot revolves around the theatre.

As an ongoing series, it seems to have found its legs. Like many cozy mysteries where a lay woman is investigating, many people want Charlene to stop for her safety. But, I have to say she can be really nosy! And maybe too pushy (she just kinda goes places and settings she’s not really invited. This leads to her eavesdropping and finding out things for the investigation, bit it is kind of shocking how often it happens and the people are just ok with her doing it after a minute or so) Jack seems to be growing stronger and learning new skills. Sam wasn’t in it as much, but it seems like their relationship might be headed into a more romantic direction.

I very much enjoy this series, and there are many different things going in besides the murder. I really like the Avery plot, Charlene being a pseudo- parent to her. The practicalities of running a b&b while also sleuthing, and trying to have a social life. Readers ho enjoyed the previous installments will definitely enjoy this one!

This is the fourth installment in Traci Wilton's Salem B&B Mystery series. Charlene Morris owns a Bed & Breakfast in Salem, Massachusetts that is inhabited by a former owner, Jack. This story is set around the 4th of July for those into holiday themed books.

I found the description of the book inviting and decided to give this series a try. It is a standalone book. I really liked the plot, the characters and twists and turns.

I will be looking into the books of the series.

I was given an advanced reader’s copy. I am not required to leave a positive review.

It's the big summer event in Salem - the 4th of July and there is a special, one time only play called Salem's Rebels-1776 showcasing Salem and it's involvement with the American Revolution. Charlene, owner of Charlene's B&B, has brought her guests to watch the play and to learn some of Salem's history. They get way more than they expected when one of the actors, Madison Boswell, a very beautiful woman - at least on the outside - is shot through the heart in front of the one hundred spectators. At first it's thought to be an accident with a prop musket when it was dropped on cue to the word "yield". Soon enough it's clear that a more modern gun, a handgun, was the kill shot.
As more becomes known about Madison, the list of suspects grows and grows. Turns out she was not a nice person at all. Which one of the people she mistreated turned to homicide? With the help of her ghostly housemate and investigative partner, Jack, Charlene sets out to catch the killer. But will the killer get her first? Det. Sam Holden gets the case and he has his hands full with the investigation and trying to keep Charlene from putting herself in danger.
I have enjoyed this series from the first book and each one has earned a five star rating. The characters are well developed and the mystery is always complex enough to have me guessing wrong. Being set in Salem is perfect. I already have the next book in the series, Mrs. Morris and the Vampire, coming out on August 24, 2021.
My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress is the fourth book in the Salem B&B Mystery series by Traci Wilton, the pen name for the collaboration of seasoned authors Traci Hall and Patrice Wilton. It is July and the Independence Day festivities are upon Charlene Morris of Charlene’s B&B in Salem, MA. One of the activities she has planned is to take her guests to view the original play ‘Salem’s Rebels.’ She expected to see an enactment of what happened before the onset of the Revolutionary War in the town of Salem. She did not expect to see the onstage murder of one of the leading actors.

As Charlene becomes more drawn in to the mystery of who killed the mesmerizing actress Madison Boswell, she is also brought closer to the dynamic police detective Sam Holden. When Charlene joins her actress friends in going to the wake and the funeral in Boston, Charlene realizes what social royalty the young woman sprang from and that even her life of great privilege had not been enough for her.

As the clues mount and the possible culprits continue being added to Charlene’s list, the danger mounts as those in league in the crime become more of a threat, considering Charlene as a lose end to be silenced. Who will be able to protect her, resident ghost Jack or detective Sam?

This is another well plotted mystery in the Salem B & B mysteries. With several ongoing subplots complementing the main plot, the story leads the reader through a difficult mystery to solve with all answers not divulged to the very end. I did enjoy this book and I do recommend it!

Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress is book #4 in the Salem B&B Mystery series by Traci Wilton.

It is the 4th of July in Salem. Charlene has a group from her B&B watching a play about the Revolutionary War when one of the actresses is shot.

This is the first book I’ve read in this series and I really enjoyed it. Charlene is a very likable character as are her friends. The mystery was interesting. I don’t remember the last time I read a book where the victim was so disliked.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress by Traci Wilton is book four in the A Salem B&B Mystery series. It can be read as a stand alone.
Charlene is once again drawn into a murder investigation. This time it's an actress perfprming in a historic play for the fourth of July that is shot. Charlene was filming the production to share with her B&B's resident ghost, Jack. When it's realized it was not an accident, local detective Sam, warns Charlene to stay out of the investigation but she can't help herself.
This easy to read, fun Cozy has plenty of suspects, likeable characters, humor, and a great side story. The setting has me wanting to visit Salem.

Charlene Morris, owner of a charming bed and breakfast in the historic Salem, Massachusetts is hosting a group of guests over the Fourth of July. As a special treat, she gets each of the guests a ticket to the one time play centered around Salem's role in the Revolutionary War. Charlene attends the play as well and is shocked when the lead actress is shot through the heart in the second act. After witnessing the gruesome event, Charlene is determined to find the culprit however she quickly learns that the deceased actress had a nasty personality making her none to popular among the locals. The suspect list is lengthy and ever growing as Charlene begins her investigation with the help of her resident ghost Jack. Warnings quickly follow, attempting to scare Charlene off of investigating however she refuses to heed the warnings, resulting in some irritation from her love interest detective Sam Holden. Will Charlene be able to once again solve a murder without becoming a victim herself?

Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress is an excellent new addition to the delightful bed and breakfast mystery series featuring Charlene and Jack, the ghost and former owner of Charlene's establishment. Salem makes for an interesting city, with plenty of history and inspiration to pull from during all seasons. This newest release is sure to be a hit for history buff as it focuses on the history of Salem and provides a fascinating peek into Revolutionary age Salem. Charlene and Jack make a great sleuthing duo, with Jack providing plenty of background information that generally leads Charlene in the right direction. All of the character regulars make an appearance and I have grown to really enjoy the friendships that have formed among the group, especially the one between Charlene and Avery, which is endearing and heartwarming. There are plenty of suspects and motives floating around that Charlene must sift through over the course of her investigation and once again the final reveal came as an absolute shock. I look forward to more adventures in this series which is a perfect combination of spooky, mysterious and cozy.
