This is the first book in a series. Kay Sharp is a Special Agent with the FBI working as a profiler. She takes a leave from her job to go back to her hometown, when her brother is sent to prison for a bar bawl. By returning she must face her brutal and secretive past, when she arrives she finds out that a woman’s body was found buried in the woods near the lake. When there are other bodies found Kay is afraid this may be the work of a serial killer. Soon she is racing to find a killer, who may have ties to her past. Thanks Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
First of I want to say a huge thank you to the publisher Bookouture , the author Leslie Wolfe , and to NetGalley for inviting me to join the blog tour for this book as well as letting me read and review it.Wow the first 2 things that me request the ARC of it was the cover and the title , and the 3rd thing was the little bit of the description I read after that I was like yes please and man am I happy that I did request it, because it was everything I was hopping it would be which was dark and disturbing as well as secretive and it had me hanging on to every word and the more I read the more I wanted to see what happened next,
First, book in series. Special Agent Kay is on leave from the FBI. She returns home to help her brother out who has wrongfully been put in jail. Kay is harboring secrets.
Elliott is the policeman she meets first thing. He ropes her into helping him with some local murders.
Small town, thriller/mystery.
Some graphic description.
This book has a fantastic plot as a basis for a very well written story, and the characters are just great. I can't wait for the next one.
This new series from Wolfe gets off to a great start in the opening book. Kay Sharp has made a name for herself as an FBI top profiler, receiving recognition for her outstanding work in catching serial killers. When her brother informs her that he is going to prison, inexplicably sentenced harshly for a mere bar brawl, Kay takes a leave of absence and moves from San Francisco to her hometown of Chester to be closer to her brother. Going home means Kay must face a brutal past and causes concern that her childhood secret will come to light. Upon her arrival, she becomes intrigued by a case of a body found buried by Silent Lake, and the local police detective asks for her help in solving what is emerging as a serial murder case. As the two of them embark on a search to find the killer and perhaps save lives, Kay discovers a troubling connection to her past, and she risks her life to bring justice for the victims. I look forward to what happens next for Kay.
Just wow! This was a fabulous story, I really enjoyed it. It was very tense, dark and secretive and it had me hanging on to every word. I read this late into the night because I couldn’t put it down. I’ve just found another favourite author and I can’t wait for the next instalment. Great book totally deserves 5 stars.
A good first book in a new series. Someone is kidnapping and killing women, and the police is confused. A former Fed, Kay, is helping out with the profiling. She has a dark past and it’s catching up with her. Someone else has an even darker past, and Kay is part of his plan.
A gritty murderer, who clearly has a master plan, and a dreadful past. This has a Criminal Minds and CSI feel to it. It’s a surprisingly fast and easy read despite its grittiness. Well-written with an excellent pace. I did not fall in love with the characters. I think they need to grow on me, but I’m sure I’ll get there.
The town itself feels a bit distant to me, but it is intriguing, and I’m sure it’s hiding many secrets and quirky people. Looking forward to getting my hangs on the sequel.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Kay Sharpe is a FBI Profiler on leave to her childhood hometown in order to help her brother who is in jail. Once there, she gets pulled in to assist a police investigation into a ritualistic murder. As she gets closer and closer to finding the murderer, old secrets are unburied and Kay begins to wonder if she will be the next victim.
I was initially drawn to this book because a love a thriller where a person has moved back home and they get thrust into the middle of a mystery. This book started out strongly, but I felt like it floundered a little near the end. I had a difficult time believing how parts of the plot fit together. Plus a lot of the characters didn't seem fully formed, or behaved in ways that were hard to understand. This is probably an amazing book for other readers, but it just didn't work for me.
This is my first read from this author and I enjoyed it very much. The way that each detail is revealed is done so skillfully and there's nothing to do but keep reading until the end. I'd most definitely want to read the second in this series and hope the author is hard at work writing more. Other than the story and characters, I found the setting itself to be unique and almost inviting. More, please.
My first book by this author (I know shame on me) and it certainly won’t be my last.
I was captivated by the thrilling hunt for the unsub as well as by the background story of Detective Kay Sharp.
More than once I held my breath felt my heart breaking or my eyes filling with tears.
Your babies… from the moment they were born, your heart filled with love. You swore you would love them and protect them for ever… Then you see changes. You think you know how to handle the situation, but it seems like you don’t. You don’t understand what went wrong and why and there is only one thing you can do in your opinion…
Sometimes I think we forget that those ruthless, vicious, heartless killers once were tiny, innocent babies craving love and attention. Was it their parents’ fault that things went wrong? In some cases, I guess we may say yes without a doubt. Not everybody is strong enough to fight and chose the right path and those who have to fend for themselves often fall by the wayside. And then you have that third category: respected in the community and clever enough to cover their tracks…for a while at least.
I know a sob story is not enough to excuse a killer’s behaviour, but it certainly helps you to understand where they came from.
A very good book that deserves 5 stars without a doubt
Thank you, Leslie Wolfe and Bookouture
Fantastic read. I have been completely unable to put this one down. I cannot wait to read more by this author.
Full review to follow on publication.
I chose this because of the blurb and it was as good as I hoped, there was one thing that confused me, it says that Kay has over ten years experience as a profiler and she’s only 29, wouldn’t she have had to go to college and then FBI training first? Having said that I would read more of Leslie Wolfe’s books.
