Aveyard is a master storyteller and world spinner. Her novel doesn't disappoint, from the first chapters I was transported to her world and could not set it down despite the copious amount of essays I needed to grade.
Victoria Aveyard needs no introduction after her Red Queen series. She creates gorgeous fantasy worlds full of magic and mystery, and Realm Breaker is no exception. It follows a cast of characters that range from too-good-for-this-world to reluctant-to-do-the-right-thing to pure-evil-incarnate-who-wants-universal-domination. But even the bad guys have range, and you’ll find yourself intrigued by their story as much as the heroes’.
If high fantasy is your genre of choice, I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t fall in love with this book. It’s as epic as it comes, spanning several kingdoms and countries. There are a handful of main players, and plenty of other characters to pique your interest. If you like assassins, warriors, pirates, queens, monsters, or wizards, then you’ll definitely find something here.
Realm Breaker sets up a larger world and a bigger overall arc that we’ll explore in future books. By the end of this first one, you’ll undoubtedly be ready to pick up the next to see what happens to Corayne, Dom, Sorasa, and the others.
Victoria Aveyard has done it again! I absolutely loved her Red Queen series. Realm Breaker is an epic, high fantasy novel starring the outcasts. It was action-packed with such likable characters. I loved it!
It was a slow beginning but the strong character and world building made the story more compelling. This book felt much more mature than her previous series, which I liked. This one is as grizzly, so if you did not mind it in Red Queen, then you will not be put off here. It is always a pleasure to read a writer who has improved upon an already good writing style. I look forward to the next installment.
My first Victoria Aveyard book and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! This was a wild ride that had me on the edge of my seat from the start. (Seriously though... what an intro). I can't wait for the next book!
I liked the other books that this author has written so I was very excited to get a copy of this one. It took me almost 3 weeks to read, though. And honestly that's why it's not getting 5 stars. It took me so long to just get halfway through the book because it was so slow! So much character and world building... a little too much in my opinion. However, because it is an author I enjoyed, I pushed through, and the last half was worth it. She is a phenomenal writer in that sense. I just wish she spent like 100 pages less on introducing us to everything.
I typically like this author. This new series has potential; however, this first book was boring with slow pacing and too many characters. It would have benefitted from a different POV.
Immortals, pirates, knights, assassins and princesses this book has it all. An unlikely group of hero’s and misfits band together to save the only world they know from destruction. The start to an amazing series, cannot wait to find out what happens next.
A medieval vibe fantasy with pirates and monsters? I’m in! Although this wasn’t up to red Queen standards, I still loved it!
Realm Breaker is the first in a néw fantasy series by Victoria Aveyard. It is an epic fantasy filled with immortals, multiple worlds, Magic, pirates, knights, queens, and of course a quest to save the world (in this case the Ward). At first I was worried about all of the POVs that Aveyard introduced us to at the beginning of the book, but as the story unfolds it becomes clear that each of these characters has a story to tell. Their stories are interwoven into the very fate of the Ward and it is interesting to see how things unfold from each perspective. I quickly fell in love with each of the characters and can already see the potential for some strong character development as they quest to save (or destroy) the Ward. I loved the world building and the descriptions in this book were amazing and really pulled me in. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and see where the companions go next. Also, I’m a sucker for a story with badass female characters and this book has plenty of those.
*Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins for the free eARC in exchange for my honest review!*
Did not finish. I got an ARC of this from NetGalley and I got 50% through it and just couldn't be bothered to finish it. It's good enough that I got through half of it, but not good enough that I care what happens. Unfortunately. So I am officially putting it down and moving on.
Different lives become connected through unpleasant events. Andry witnesses the horrible deaths of a group of knights that he was traveling with. One brother killed another and set loose a horde of violent corpses that kills everyone in its path. Reminiscent of the Lord of the Rings, this updated epic fantasy brings action and a gathering of many to fight a common enemy that wants to take over the world. The group of forsaken allies grows stronger after being betrayed by someone they thought was one of their own. This group is made up of a young woman with a special family line, a large and powerful Elder, an honorable squire, a young assassin and more continue to join as the story unfolds. They face dangerous creatures and powerful foes in this high, epic fantasy that opens a series bound to be a story for the ages! Fantastic world building and strong character development, 5 stars for this series opener!
I absolutely loved this book! The characters were so much fun to follow. The story itself was fascinating to read, I cannot wait for the next book by Victoria Aveyard!
This book was honestly just too slow for me. I had no idea what was going on in the beginning. I didn’t love the multiple points of view, particularly since there were 6! That’s way too many and some POVs I just did not care for. The plot was somewhat interesting, but the book was too slow to really hold my interest.
This book, you guys. I didn't even know I needed this book in my life, now I wish I could erase it from my brain to read it all over again. The world-building, the morally grey characters, THE BETRAYAL?! Now I want to pick up all the epic fantasy because I need to go on an epic quest again, Cant wait for the next!
Coryane feels the pull of the world beyond her small village- but her mother has other plans for her. Unfortunately those plans are to stay put and continue living the same predictable life while her mother continues to live the life of a plundering pirate. When the opportunity presents itself to embark on adventure, Coryane doesn't hesitate to leave behind her life even though she couldn't possibly imagine the adventure, and danger, ahead of her.
I thoroughly enjoyed Realm Breaker! I am always concerned after loving a series that the author's next world will be less engaging- this was NOT the case with this book! Aveyard has done a wonderful job creating a world filled with characters you can both love and hate and a storyline that will grab your interest. I highly recommend adding this book to the top of your to-read list!
I've been a big fan of Aveyard in the past but this felt a bit long to me. I enjoyed some of the plot points, but the story seemed to drag on and the numerous points of view was a bit much for me. I will continue to check out her books, but this just wasn't as good as I hoped after read Red Queen. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Holy smokes, this is the fantasy adventure we deserve!
Things we love to see:
medieval kingdom vibes but with pirates and monsters!
Great fantasy tropes like a group of strangers on a mission to save the world, old magic bloodlines, an immortal races
Advising humans and so much more!
Its a lengthy book but the pages flew by so quickly!

“There are breakers of castles, breakers of chains, breakers of kings and kingdoms,” she said, her voice iron.
“Which am I?”
Power surged through her veins, delicious and seductive. “You are a realm breaker. You would crack this world apart and build an empire from its ruins.”†
This was my first Victoria Aveyard book and I was not disappointed! The first chapter sucked me immediately into the story, though I did struggle a bit in the beginning with the sheer number of characters introduced. There are a lot of POV points and a TON of side characters, but I’m getting excellent found family vibes so... YAY!
The world-building was fascinating, and set up in such a way that I have no idea who I am “supposed” to be rooting for. (I mean... I think I know, but I also love the “villain”?!!! Are they truly a villain because I am not convinced.) I LOVE the concept of the spindles as dimensional portals to… monster realms?!!! The politics of the world were complex, but ultimately fascinating. I’m really looking forward to book 2, as this totally feels like a series that's success hinges on the complete work. So much has been set up and I really hope Aveyard follows through in a satisfying way! (I haven’t read Red Queen so I have no idea what to expect from her as a series author).
†must be checked against final text
An amazing new series opener from the author of the. Red Queen series! So exciting, funny, and full of adventure. I'm so excited to continue this series! Victoria Aveyard fans will not be disappointed!
