This highly suspenseful tale takes place in modern day but sets out to solve a WWII family mystery. The characters lead you on a suspenseful journey full of twists and turns and many surprises.
This was my first book by Kathi Oran Peterson. It won’t be my last. I love how this was a mystery combined with romance. Plus the history that is brought into the story is wonderful! You can’t go wrong with this book!
Treacherous Legacy is a contemporary thriller written by Kathi Oram Peterson.
Anna Braverman knows her father and uncle were once spies for Israel, so when her uncle summons her to share critical information, she comes.
But their meeting is barely begun when her uncle is assassinated.
Now Anna is on the run. Who is after her, and is there anyone left she can trust? Will she be able to survive, let alone somehow solve the conspiracy surrounding her family's legacy?
My Thoughts: This book was exciting. There is plenty of action and suspense, and lots of chase scenes (which I love.) It's a bit unbelievable, but does read like a good action novel, so I approve. :)
If you enjoy action/adventure with a little romance, you will probably enjoy this book.
I would like to thank Covenant Communications for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you!
I love a good suspenseful read. And I really enjoy learning about History while reading as well. This book combined my love of reading and suspense. It was an edge of your seat ride the whole time. I wasn't able to read a lot at a time so not only was I feeling the angst while reading, but I felt it for several days wondering what was going to happen next as the book stretched on, in between my reading time. It was well worth the time spent.
I enjoyed the mystery as well as Anna, her uncle Ezra and Kristofer are trying to unravel what happened to Anna's great-grandfather during WWII. He was a famous Jewish painter who disappeared without a trace and was accused of supporting the Nazis. When a tragedy strikes, Anna is left to run and put all of her knowledge and skills to use to figure out this mystery. Not knowing whom she should trust and being in a foreign country leaves her in a real conundrum. Not to mention, she's a wanted person.
Clear your schedule so you can read this with fewer interruptions than I had. Trust me, you'll want to because you need to figure it all out. Who are all these people who keep showing up in Anna's path and are the clues she's following really going to help her or just lead her on more of a wild goose chase?
The historical aspects of the book were very interesting. It was fun finding out more about the people who lived in Iceland and Denmark during WWII. I always loved the book, Number the Stars, when I was younger and reading about the Jews in Denmark during this time. I had several moments where I thought of that book while enjoying this one.
Content: Some moments of peril. Some death and some talk about war and concentration camps, the Holocaust. Nothing overly graphic.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Happy Reading!!!
I was so frustrated at Anna's stupidity sometimes. I faced some problems with the other language(s) and the Mossad groups. But I ended up liking it anyway. Not much unpredictable per say, but definitely a page turner. You can give it a try. I didn't mind the lack of romance aspect.
First of all, I really love this cover! So pretty and fits perfectly! This book was intense and full of twists and turns that had me guessing the whole time. I loved the characters and their personal journeys that came throughout the book! Lots of great detail and I actually felt cold! Thank you for a great thriller!
Anna is on the run, thanks to her Uncle warning her just before he died. Despite his warning to trust no one, she quickly comes to rely on Kristofer, a complete stranger who appears to have known her uncle.
Putting skepticism at her quick trust of Kristofer aside, the fast pace of this novel keeps you engaged throughout, while allowing enough room for character development and new intrigues as a second stranger enters later in the novel.
A tragic but heartwarming mystery.

When 35-year-old Anna sees her uncle, her last living relative, die in front of her, he uses his last breath to tell her to run. Anna’s uncle had continued her father’s work to prove that their ancestors were not Nazi sympathizers, and now Anna feels the same duty to finish what they started. Following the teachings of her father, Anna starts down the right path, but digging into family secrets is dangerous for Anna’s heart as well as her life.
Anna runs from people trying to kill her and is forced to trust strangers in order to reach her goals; she gets misled and discovers things about her loved ones that are hard to believe; and, yet, through it all, she barely scrapes by -- as should heroes who are on a quest for justice. While all these elements made the story as outlandish as it was entertaining, the climax felt less involved and victorious than I hoped. Peterson has written a compelling journey with a quick ending as she ties up all the loose ends. My favorite part was the author’s note where Peterson explains which WWII details from Anna’s story are true.

The author does a great job of quickly getting readers emotionally invested in the story as soon as (main character) Anna sits down with her grandfather in a busy restaurant to discuss what happened to her Great-Grandparents during the Holocaust. Things soon take an unexpected deadly turn which sends Anna running for her life. She can’t stop hearing her Grandfather say to her “Run. Trust No One!” Where should she go? What should she do? That is the question. Anna was thankful her father had taught her some things to look for in evaluating a situation and locating a safe house. Journalist, Kristofer Tomasson surprises Anna. He says she can trust him because her grandfather did. Kristofer tells Anna they have to keep moving because people are trying to find them. He would fill her in on the project he has been working on with her grandfather. They start to formulate a plan. Everything has happening so fast, again, she wonders who to trust?
I like the wide range of colorful characters and the fast-paced trek this unlikely crew finds themselves on. I liked how the author weaves in historical facts throughout this engaging story. I enjoyed this thrilling journey through Iceland and Denmark to chase down secrets they hope to uncover about WWII, Anna’s father and grandparents. This is an intriguing read and one that would work well for your book club. There is so much to discuss. It is an entertaining clean romantic suspense story I could not put down. This is the first novel I have read by this author it won’t be the last.

I love a good suspense/mystery and when the author can include historical facts it's even better. This is book is one of those which made it even more interesting to me. The story begins with a prologue in Denmark as the Jews receive word that they must evacuate before the Gestapo arrives. Fast forward to the present day when Anna meets her uncle Ezra at a cafe in Iceland. Before he can tell her why he needed to meet with her he's killed as they sit at their table eating. The last thing he tells Anna is "Run!", so she does. Thankfully her father had taught her lessons on spy craft and she's able to use them to find uncle Eza's safehouse. There she meets with journalist Kristofer Tómasson who offers to help her in exchange for an exclusive story. They must work together to find and bring to light the information that got her uncle killed.
I loved how brave Anna and Kristofer were, and also those who helped them in their quest to uncover and expose the truth. Of course I loved how the truth about her great-grandparents was brought to light in the end. I like when authors do their research and I learn things while reading an awesome story. This book is a great example of that. I learned things I hadn't known before, such as the Danish Jews and how a lot of them were able to avoid being captured.
This story will keep you up reading and on the edge of your seat. There are also multiple twists that will take you by surprise. It's a thrilling journey through Iceland and Denmark so hold on tight.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. Covenant via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I loved this book! It was intense and kept you reading. The storyline is fast paced and intriguing. I loved learning about an aspect of the war that I never knew. Seeing its effect on other countries besides the usual three was fascinating. I think this is Peterson's best book yet.
Going into the story I wasn’t sure how I felt about it and now finished I’m still not sure. The author details fact from fiction in author notes at the end, which help put the story in perspective. I realize again how much I don’t know about many things in the world around me.
The opening of the story takes us right into the past and the Danish occupation by the Nazi forces.
Then we quickly meet the modern descendants of the family in World War II.
There is fairly nonstop action and suspense in the beginning with Anna, Kristof and Samara. Once we leave Denmark everything slows down as secrets are revealed that directly affect Anna’s life.
Then the suspense kicks in again for a race to the finish in finding out what truly happened back in World War II.
I appreciate the author giving the reader a bit more closure than just the reveal of the truth.
Quite often I avoid heavy topics but I’m glad I took a chance on reading this book. It reminds me how important lessons from the past are for us to remember and say never again.
This was an enjoyable way to learn from the past with a side of romance.
This book drew me in from the first page. It is full of action and suspense. I couldn't wait to keep reading and find out what happened next.
The story takes place mostly in Iceland, where the main character Anna Braverman goes to meet with her Uncle Ezra. After telling Anna that he had uncovered some information to help prove that her Great Grandfather was not a Nazi spy, as previously believed, Ezra is murdered. Anna is determined to carry on Ezra's search for the truth, but someone else is just as determined to keep their secrets and will go to any length to stop Anna.
I really enjoyed reading this book and will defiantly be recommending it to my customers!
I love stories that include information about WWII and mysteries. This one had both. It was fascinating to watch this mystery unravel and find the clues that were laid out through history.
In this story, Kathi Oram Peterson takes us on a journey through Iceland and Denmark and the treatment of the Jewish people in that area. The clues have been left for the daughter of a Mossad agent to figure out with the help of a reporter. Throughout their journey they have to figure out who to trust and how best to solve the mystery left to her by her uncle.
Anna and Kristofer work together to unravel the mystery because if they don't, it could mean both their lives. The suspense is palpable and the reveals were perfection. This story was masterfully crafted and I would believe that it was a true story. I was drawn in quickly and couldn't put it down.
I received an early copy from the publisher and this is my honest review.
I liked this story and the history included. It was fascinating to learn more about the nazis and resistance against them. I found it very well researched. At times though it was a little slow and I had a hard time getting into the story. At points I felt I had to read things multiple times to understand what was being said, but overall was an interesting read. 3.5 stars from me #treacherouslegacy #netgalley
This book was fast paced and exciting. It held my interest from beginning to end. The characters were well written and believable. Once I started reading I didn’t want to put it down and I stayed up late reading it. This was a book that I enjoyed since it had some romance in it, but there was enough action that my dad enjoyed it as well. Very good read!
This was an enjoyable novel to read. There was a great mix of history, suspense, action, and romance, which kept me intrigued and made me want to turn the pages, to know what really happened to Anna’s family.
And I loved the author’s descriptions of the various settings — from Reykjavik to Copenhagen to a boat being tossed by the stormy seas, the author’s words brought the scenes so vividly to life in my mind.
There were a few bits in the story that I thought stretched the believability just a tad too far, and therefore threw me out of the story world and back into reality. But overall, I enjoyed the read and would recommend it. I’d give it 3.5 out of 5 stars for that reason.
Many thanks to Covenant Communications and NetGalley for the digital copy of this novel for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own! 🙂
Ms. Peterson has created historical fiction at its best. With roots in the middle of WW II, Treacherous Legacy explores the life of two people who seek to discover the true story behind a man who had long been labeled a German spy. The story takes them from Iceland to Denmark and back to Iceland - including opportunities to meet the Queen of Denmark in her palace and to visit the relatively famous Hallgrimskirkja Church in Reykjavík, Iceland. The story is both tense and sad at times, but was well worth the time I spent reading it.
At times the writing seemed a bit awkward - as if written by an inexperienced writer writing in the first person. That was balanced by three characteristics that made the book stand out.
First was the inclusion of historical and geographical references that forced me to turn to Google for additional information - a feature that I appreciate when reading historical fiction.
The second characteristic that I appreciated was the use of brief Icelandic, German, and Danish, phrases by the story’s characters. These were easily translated using Kindle’s built-in translator. I discovered that the author had also included interpretations for many (all?) of these in the back of the book, though I did not discover this until I finished reading the book. It might have been more useful to include this “dictionary” near the front allowing the reader to use it as the book is being read.
Finally, the book includes a three-page essay in which she discusses the historicity of the book. She discusses a wide range of topics including the use of wireless technology by the Danish Resistance during WW II and the presence of eighty-nine-year-old women who are actively going to sea and traveling between Iceland and Denmark even today. Not only is each question clearly answered with a “yes” or “no”, but she also includes sources for her conclusions. This final essay is interesting in its own right.
I give the book 4-½ stars.

This book is full of twists and turns. It is a fast paced thriller of spies and assassins. Anna is in Iceland to meet with her uncle Ezra. He is murdered while they were eating in a public restaurant. Anna goes on the run. She meets Kristofer who is an investigative reporter and wants to help. I don't want to ruin anything, so I will just say it is a rollercoaster of a ride. I would recommend this book.
This is a well written book that hooks you on the first page. It is full of suspense and will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next.
