The Sinful Lives of Trophy Wives is definitely a love/hate story, and you flip from one feeling to the other. A very fun read, rich women, rich men and a mystery. Perfect for the beach as the time flies as you read. Thank you #NetGalley#BallantineBooks#TheSinfulLivesofTrophyWives
OK, so Sinful Lives of Trophy Wives tells the story of three women, none of whom are trophy wives. Seriously. Brooke is much younger than her ridiculously wealthy husband and is super hot and whatever, but she's a published author with her own money. Erin is married to a super rich plastic surgeon but is a news anchor so again, own money and job. Georgia is engaged, got money from two dead husbands, but also seems to have come from money so again, not a trophy wife. Also, Erin and Georgia are in their mid to late thirties and their husbands are not older, but I digress.
Erin is a news anchor but storms out of her job when she's about to go on air and keeps expecting them to beg her to come back and it's honestly embarrassing to read about. Georgia is known as the Black Widow because her first husband fell down the stairs and the second one killed himself and now she's engaged. Brooke moves into their super exclusive neighborhood and over the course of literally A WEEK is suddenly their BFF and knows all their shit. It's weird. If you're going to be into potentially nefarious dealings, maybe don't share it with the new girl in the first two days?
You can't really get a read on any of them because they're all hiding stuff, from themselves, from each other, and they are honestly just terrible people. You might think that Brooke isn't terrible, but considering she's filing a lot of this drama away for her book, she seems kind of terrible. Anyway, over a week, a bunch of ridiculous stuff occurs and then is "wrapped up" at the end into a very bedraggled, crooked bow that makes you go, "Wait...does that actually fit??" but not really care enough to reread the book to go back for clues. It's a fun read. But I'm not going to pick it up again
Mystery writer Brooke gets more inspiration than she knows what to do with when she moves into the exclusive Presidio Terrace. Her neighbor Georgia is widely assumed to have murdered her two wealthy husbands and Erin, the tv anchor who lives across the street, is no better. The trio bonds over mimosas and cattiness during the week leading up to Georgia’s third wedding. With as many secrets as they have it’s no wonder things rapidly spiral into chaos and violence. The writing is taut and the characters are all delectably detestable.
My mouth is on the floor. It has been for like 15 minutes now- talk about a jaw dropping ending. I don’t want to give anything away, so I can’t elaborate beyond READ THIS BOOK. I figured out one part of the plot semi early, but it was still really well done. But then the shock came.
The book is an easy read that you won’t be able to put down. You will be drawn into the world of Erin, Georgia, and Brooke. The author does an exceptional job of switching between the three points of view without missing a beat. I’ve alluded to two twists above but I think there were really more like 10!
I received an advanced copy from the publisher for my honest review of the book.
This is just the book I needed to read! After several serious, sad, and thought provoking books - I needed this one! Its kind of like a soap opera or a real housewives episode. Also a reminder of what you see on the outside of people's lives is not necessarily so.. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review.. This is a new to me author and i may just have to check out what she's written before.
This book reminded me of eating a so bad, but so good dessert. The characters, a group of women living in an elite San Francisco enclave, are wickedly flawed and judgmental, yet each had her vulnerability beneath the facade. I loved that they prioritized their friendships with each other, regardless of motive. I loved the juxtaposition of one woman’s opinion of another with that other woman’s reality. I also enjoyed that the women varied in age and stage of life/career and that no one’s grass was really greener.
The case of the missing fiancé was intriguing but for me it played second fiddle to the fun of what transpired whenever these women were together. Imagine Desperate Housewives set in San Francisco - never a dull moment. I fear that revealing anything more on the plot will lead me into spoilers so I will sign off with a thumbs up! Thank you to NetGalley and Random House/Ballantine for allowing me to enjoy this. ARC.
"You know what they say: love and money get people killed", just ask Georgia, Erin, and Brooke. In a mystery, chick flick kind of book, love and money are the ultimate killers? You will meet three trophy wives and find connections to all three of them, as well as their husbands. Each woman has different things on her mind, different motives, and different reasonings for following through with what she chooses to do.
This book is one that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and if I'd had enough time, would have read it all in one setting. There were some twists that had me going "woah." with my jaw on the floor, especially at the end.
Thank you to Net Galley, Random Houston Publishing Group, and Kristin Miller (author) for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be published July 20, 2021.
I appreciate the opportunity to review this book, so thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. However, this book was a big miss for me. The characters were one-dimensional, the plot was so over the top, and hardly any of it made any sense. I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but this book needs a major edit.
I binged my way through this delicious soap opera drama about three trophy wives in San Francisco recently so if you’re looking for the perfect slump-buster, look no further. Black Widow Georgia, image perfect Erin, and new kid on the block Brooke have plenty of secrets to keep you hooked until the last page. It’s available everywhere on 07/20 and makes for perfect beach reading. Thank you @penguinrandomhouse and @netgalley for an e-ARC.
A Desperate Housewives like book with ultra rich women who are drawn to drama; both living it and causing it. Brooke, Erin, and Georgia all fill a specific stereotype that keeps the plot rolling, but the first intriguing tidbit is trying to find out if Georgia, called the Black Widow, has had any role in the deaths of her previous husbands as she is about to marry her third husband. Enter Brooke and Erin who befriend her and the drama begins. If you like the Desparate Housewives genre, this reads like a show arc from there. So I found it quite enjoyable!
This story is told by 3 unreliable women. Brooke is the definition of trophy wife, marrying a rich older man. Erin is married to a plastic surgeon and with her career success her marriage has suffered. Georgia's nickname is black widow since her first 2 husbands both died and she inherited their fortunes. All 3 women to me are unlikable and truly not nice people. There were some really nice twists and turns which made the book an enjoyable read. This was a quick read perfect for an afternoon at the pool or beach.
This was a quick, easy read about super rich people behaving badly!! Author Brooke Davies and her much older and very wealthy husband, Jack, have moved into a mansion in the wealthy neighborhood of Presidio Terrace. TV news anchor and president of the HOA who lives across the street, Erin King, makes a beeline over to meet them as soon as they move in. Erin's husband, Mason, is a plastic surgeon. Next-door neighbor, Georgia St. Clair, has the moniker of the "Black Widow" because her two husbands have died, one by falling down the stairs and the other by suicide. Georgia is engaged to handsome and very wealthy Robert Redford with the wedding scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
I enjoyed the zany antics of these very colorful women and their complicated friendships but, It was a little confusing at times with keeping the husbands and wives straight.
Thank you NetGalley and Ballentine Books for the ARC of this very good read that kept me guessing until the very end.
It is well written. Not a bad storyline. I love the cover art. I couldn't get into the characters though. I just didn't like them very much and I find it hard to really enjoy characters that are unlikeable.
I received a digital edition of this book courtesy of LibraryThing Early Reviewers and the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Presidio Terrace is like a vortex, where negative energy and drama cling to the air like fog, swirling round and round our little cul-de-sacs.
Brooke Davies is the new kid on the block when she and her husband Jack move into the ultra-rich enclave of Presidio Terrance. It’s a prestigious gated community with security out the wazoo and has been permanently removed from Google Earth, such is the value residents place on their privacy. Jack is a security-conscious tech billionaire; Brooke is a writer working on her second mystery novel. She’s feeling stuck on her plot and harried by the move, but everything changes as she gets to know her neighbors.
Erin King, across the street, is a local news broadcaster married to a prominent plastic surgeon. Her best friend, and Brooke’s next door neighbor, is Georgia St. Claire, infamous around the city as the Black Widow. She’s been married twice, to fabulously wealthy men, and both husbands died under murky circumstances shortly after their marriages. Georgia’s lining up Husband #3, Robert Donnelly, and the city’s all abuzz that she’s also plotting his murder alongside their wedding.
Brooke finds herself fascinated by Georgia, and itching to turn her into a character in her next book. It’s easy to fall under Georgia’s sway, as evidenced by Erin’s fervent loyalty, but when Robert mysteriously disappears from his beloved yacht on the night of the pre-wedding celebration, it quickly becomes clear just how deep Erin and Georgia’s friendship goes, and how suddenly even the best-laid plans can go awry.
This story is straight out of a trashy prime-time soap opera, and it has the exact same appeal: it’s a train wreck, but once you start, it’s hard to stop watching. Every character is a façade, their interactions with each other shallow and calculated. The plot veers off into wacky world pretty quickly, and suspension of disbelief is a must if you want to make it all the way to the end.
The narrative is split between Brooke and Erin (with bookend chapters from Georgia at the start and finish). All narration is first-person present tense POV, and each narrator is unreliable, which makes for a fascinating read: juggling what they’re saying, what they’re doing, and trying to figure out where their warped perceptions meet reality. Brooke very obviously has daddy issues – her husband is 50, twenty-two years her senior, and she feels imprisoned in her marriage by his demand for a veneer of perfection. Erin is incredibly insecure, completely self-absorbed, and very obviously unravelling. Georgia is a master manipulator and revels in her reputation as a Black Widow. I found them all to be unbearably smug, albeit each in their own, insufferable way.
This was a roller coaster ride of a book, and I swept through it in one sitting, but it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. I didn’t have to get too far away from the ending to see some glaringly obvious the plot holes that slick writing can’t quite paper over. The ending is unbelievable, three twists too many and completely unsupported by the preceding narrative, which was disappointing. Certain bombshells are dropped like lead balloons. It was fun trying to guess everyone’s secrets, but they were foreshadowed pretty heavily, and none of them were very surprising. This feels like familiar territory, without the benefit of variation on the theme.
In spite of the niggles, I enjoyed this book, and if you like car-crash trashy soap opera plotlines with terrible characters doing terrible things and not really receiving any comeuppance for it, then you’ll enjoy this book, too.
The Sinful Lives of Trophy Wives provided a twist I truly did not see coming. It is rare for me to not be able to look back and find something that I should have picked up on but this book ended with a real surprise.
"Black Widow" Georgia, news anchor Erin and seeming 'trophy wife" Brooke are all thrown together when Brooke and her tech genius husband move into the presigious Presidio Terrace. None of their lives are as happy or glamourous as they may seem. Erin's career isn't as hot as she would like people to believe and neither is her marriage. Brooke appears to be the perfect woman who Erin quickly envies, but her husband believes he calls the shots. Georgia, who is suspected of murdering her previous two husbands, is planning a wedding many believe will end in murder.
The twists in this book had me finishing it in less than a day, it was really a book I could not put down.
Thank you to Ballantine for suggesting the book, as well as the opportunity to read it, and NetGalley for the ARC.
Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.
I decided to dive into this after reading some heavier, thought provoking books. I wanted something that would keep me entertained. This fit the bill, and then some. Brooke, Georgia and Erin are three attractive, wealthy, and positively vapid women living in an ultra exclusive community outside of San Francisco. They’re not likable. At all. Not even a little bit. But Kristin Miller tells their story in such a way that you can’t help but be invested in it. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out the twists in books like this but I was blindsided this time. This was just a fun book to read.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Kristin Miller and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
A fun and juicy read! This took many twists and turns that I was not expecting. However, I could not take a liking to the characters. They were not relatable and I couldn’t get into their stories. I like the premise and enjoyed the scandalous vibe but just couldn’t sync with the characters. My thanks to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fast-paced and fun thriller that centers around three women living in an exclusive part of San Francisco. When mystery writer Brooke Davies moves to the neighborhood, she hesitantly becomes friends with Erin King, a successful new anchor who wants nothing more than to retain her perfect image and Georgia St. Claire, whom has been named the Black Widow due to her past two husband’s mysterious deaths. She is engaged to husband number three, and when he goes missing, everyone assumes that the Black Widow has struck again. It’s up to her neighborhood friends Brooke and Erin to clear her name without unravelling their own complicated lives. Fans of The Hunting Wives will enjoy this suspenseful romp. Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine for the advanced review copy.
4.5 stars
What a wild ride this book was! I have been in a thriller mood lately and this book did not let me down. This is my first book by Kristin Miller and it will not be my last. It was such a page turner and every single character was a suspect the entire time. You really didn’t know what was happening until the very last page of the book. I was completely shocked at the plot twist and I didn’t see it coming (when usually I am able to). I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys rich people drama and thrillers.
TW: domestic abuse, alcohol and drug use.
*Thank you to Ballantine books for the advance reader copy for review*
Dramatic and engaging, Desperate Housewives meets Big Little Lies. A captivating story of lies, betrayal, and secrets. Evenly paced and well written. A stunning, sizzling summertime read that is difficult to put down.
