This third book in the First Comes Love trilogy was a great ending story for the three women friends who found their true loves in an unusual fashion. Brina Feld and Lord Blackknight (Zane) seemed to be a perfect fit for each other…however reluctant Brina seemed to be. Zane’s diligence in courting Brina and making promises that seemed doomed …led to a heart- throbbing romance. I loved the character that the author gave to both Brina and Zane and enjoyed the care that Zane showed to Brina no matter the circumstance. Of course the cousins, Harper and Robert, led to some interesting side-stories…..and who couldn’t picture Uncle Sly and Uncle Hector as the family elders who had to stick their noses into everything.. That was a fun departure from the usual female elders who would do the same thing! Overall, a quick and entertaining read which could be a stand-alone…but why? A reader will enjoy the other two books of the series just as much! Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review this advance reader copy. #NetGalley #HowToTrainYourEarl
Brina feels since she has the status of widow and is content that she does not need a man. Hence though when Lord Blacknight or Zane returns he wakes up feelings she had turned off. He has his sights and it would seem his heart on Brina. As they toy with each other, you will find yourself turning the pages to see how this works in these unpredictable times.
I really tried to like Grey's books but I can't get into them at all. I can't connect to the characters and the plot is all over the place. I understand why people like her books but she's just not my cup of coffee.
Brina has vowed to never marry again, but Zane has other plans and makes a bet he can win her hand before the season is over. She makes a bet with him that he can’t last the season acting like a proper gentleman.
The adventures and romance are good and keep you intrigued throughout. I enjoyed seeing the last of the Salty Dove widows get their happy ending.
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley.
This was cute! It was a little long and repetitive at times, but still fun and enjoyable. I loved the twist that brought these two together, and adored Zane’s journey as he worked to better himself for Brina.
Many thanks to Entangled for the review copy!
This absolutely wonderful story had me guessing throughout. Who was going to win Zane or Brina, it was so up in the air. I loved how persistent Zane is, he doesn’t make it easy for Brina to stay aloof. I loved all the chemistry, suspense, drama, and wow so many surprises. Loved them all, just when you think it’s going one way it goes another, so much to keep you reading, you won’t want to put it down.
How to Train your Earl is the third book in the First Comes Love Series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but I feel like they are improved by reading books in order. The series is based on three widows who lost their husbands on the ship, Salty Dove, who started the Seafarer’s School for Girls. It was a boarding school for the families of the ship’s crew that taught them to read, write, and learn the skills of a seamstress.
Zane Browning found himself becoming the new Earl of Blacknight after a tragic accident kills his uncle and his cousin. He had a reputation for his scandalous ways and his family feared he would fail in his responsibilities. His uncles took it upon themselves to assist him and were nudging him to find a respectable wife. When he sees Brina walking down the street, he knew he wanted her for his wife. First, he had to gain her attention and then ends up agreeing to her conditions.
Brina Feld is known and admired among Society as the perfect widow. She had no intentions of ever marrying, but the attraction she feels to Zane and his wager disrupts her life. She agrees to marry him at the end of the season if he can change his ways and become a gentleman. She has no expectations of that happening so has no fear of having to marry him.
This has been a great book with a surprising ending which I loved. Although this was not my favorite book in the series, it was still a delightful book to read and part of a lovely series.
I received an ARC and am willingly leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It's nice to see these characters again, but Brina's story was a bit lackluster for me. Her interactions with Zane are largely one-sided--I'm not sure why he's remotely appealing to her. He has a small redemption arc, but it's not nearly enough for me.
Great for: Readers of the rest of the series. I'm not sure if it would be enjoyable as a standalone novel.
While I have not read the previous books in this series, I did not find it necessary to read this book. However, I did not really enjoy this story. Despite being firmly entrenched in her widowhood and conscious of her standing with Society because of her philanthropic interests, Brina throws caution to the wind and kisses Zane in the middle of the park in the middle of the day? Was Zane that irresistible? While I did like Brina and Zane as individuals, I didn’t really feel the attraction between them. This book was not for me.
The New Earl of Blacknight is crass and likes his drinking. Zane has made a bet with his cronies that he will get the prim and proper Widow Brian Feld to accept his advances and by the end of the season be his. She has turned down every single other man that has approached her.
Brina finds out and decides to turn the table.
This is a lighthearted, fun, bantering book between two very interesting and strong characters. The book takes on its own persona as it goes and you will be snickering at different times to see who won what battle!
I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
Captivating and engaging characters with a storyline that is amazing well written . I so so caught up in read it I was sad when it came to an end . Can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next
How to Train Your Earl is the third book in the First Comes Love series by Amelia Grey. It can be read as a standalone, but having read the first 2 books of the series, if you haven't read them you will certainly want to once you finish this one.
Brina Feld was widowed when her husband died when the Salty Dove ship sunk. For longer than most she grieved but her charity work has helped her recover and to find contentment in her life. What she hates to admit and what nobody knows is that she has started to miss being in a relationship, started to miss having some fun. When her aunt, who wants her to start living her life properly again persuades her to attend a masked ball in Paris life will never be the same again. It is there that she first encounters Zane and where she shares a kiss with him that leaves both of them mesmerised. But time was of the essence for Zane and it had to be a case of kiss and run without even any introductions.
They meet again when Zane, recently having become the Earl of Blacknight, decides that he would prove to his family that he was able to be more respectable and give up his rakish ways. What better way than to declare that he would marry the very proper widow, Brina. He knows she is much more than she lets on to society and still remembers the fabulous kiss they shared. Unfortunately, the way he goes about letting people know his intentions infuriates Brina and she lets him know in no uncertain terms that she will never marry him, ever.
The gauntlet is dropped and what follows is the wonderful story of how Zane tries to win Brina's heart and get her to change her mind about marriage to him.
I really enjoyed this book because Brina really puts Zane through his paces and he flabergasts her with his determination. Sometimes I had to laugh at what was happening. There were moments of sadness too, especially when Brina is remembering what happened to her husband. All in all this book was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of each emotion provoked. As for the passion between the couple, it was off the charts. What was great though was that although you could tell how passionate the couple was there was no need for in detail bedroom scenes. That shows me how good an author is if they can portray that without being too descriptive.
I have loved all the books in this series and am very happy to recommend them.
I cannot get enough of Amelia Grey's books. Each one is just as good if not better than the last. Grey is excellent at writing strong female characters and the banter is always fantastic. This book had me laughing out loud at this ridiculous bet the Earl made to win Brina's hand in marriage. This book is a wonderful read and perfect for and fans of historical romance.
Third in this series of stories of three widows who meet because their husbands were lost at sea in the same wreck, this is a delightful conclusion to the trilogy. It can easily be read as a standalone, but I think is best enjoyed if you've read the other two, as there are references and inside jokes among the three women, who have become best friends, that would make for a richer reading experience if known.
Brina is our third widow and the heroine of this book. She’s been struggling the hardest with her grief, and truly feels that only through a life of service and remaining a widow, can she continue to function appropriately. As a result, she is held up as a paragon of virtue in the ton as the model to emulate. Zane, our Hero, on the other hand is a rake of the first order—or is he. Never having had any expectations put upon him, he lived down to them. Now, a newly minted Earl through unexpected and unfortunate circumstances, he’s trying to find his way in a role he never wanted nor asked for.
At a masquerade in Paris, Brian encounters Zane in one of the best “meet-cutes” ever written. Never expecting to see each other again, it’s a big surprise when their paths cross later back in London.
As the story unfolds, we see them each trying to break out of the roles they’ve built for themselves, yet not sure how to do that. With each other’s help, there is growth and healing, and of course chemistry. It’s good entertainment.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher. This is my freely given, honest review.
This book is just... fine. It just didn't grab me at all. It isn't bad, but nothing about it felt special. I think part of the problem was the B-plot conflict that was supposed to drive the characters apart. Because it was just vaguely there for most of the book, the stakes never felt particularly high until the very end when it came on all of a sudden, Beyond that, the leads weren't anything special and their chemistry was fairly standard. It wasn't a bad book or poorly written, but it wasn't particularly compelling.
Brina Feld had been rebuilding her life after the untimely death of her sea captain husband five years earlier. Brina, along with two other ladies whose husbands had perished in the sinking of the Salty Dove, had opened a school for the sisters and daughters of the men lost on the Salty Dove, to teach the girls the art of sewing, preparing them to be seamstresses. After being the ever proper widow, Brina visited her aunt in Paris, where she put on a shockingly low cut pink ball gown and a mask, knowing no one from London would see her. While dodging an overly attentive would-be suitor, Brina entered a bedroom and was stunned to see an exceedingly handsome man tied to a chair with silk scarves. She unties him, after securing his promise that he was not a criminal, and he kissed her so thoroughly she relived that moment for days to come.
Zane Browning, currently the Earl of Blacknight, is completely overwhelmed with the responsibilities he has now that he has inherited the earldom. His aging uncles try and counsel him, but when the earl happens to see Brina walking down the street in London, he asks his uncles about her, and is instantly determined to marry her. The earl’s reputation as a gambler is well-known, so he does something that initially infuriates Brina – he enters a prestigious gambling club and places a wager that Mrs. Brina Feld will agree to marry him before the last ball of the Season. Soon others are adding to the wager, and though Brina is furious and embarrassed, she agrees to tutor Zane in the art of being a gentleman, all while having no intention of accepting his proposal.
How to Train Your Earl is the third book in the series, but can be read as a stand-alone. Brina’s concern for others, her work with the Sisters and with the girls’ school, and her inner strength and courage are admirable. She needed someone like the earl to shake up her quiet life, while he needed her stabilizing influence. I enjoyed both Brina and Zane’s evolutions, but the HEA at the end fell a little flat for me.
This is a very enjoyable read, I actually found myself intrigued to read it and stayed up way longer than I should have reading it. The writing is strong and the story line is good. Zane is a true rake, the one where you love him for being such a rouge and hate him because of it too. I could really feel his power and sensuality from the very start.
Is part of a series (which I have read all) but is a total standalone novel.
So for the above, I'd actually give this story a 4 star rating... now what brought it down, (Spoilers)
*Way too much useless dialogue, I found myself skimming over full pages (e-book) and not missing out on anything.
*Brina- I just didn't get her, she flew off the handle too many times jumping to conclusions that she had made up in her mind that were far from what actually happened. She couldn't even hear another persons side of the story yet she was supposed to be this saintly person. And this big secret she kept hidden, when it finally did get spoken about I was like huh? That's all? It was a let down.
*So the new earl Zane makes a bet, yes he's pompous and self assured, but their relationship is based off that bet. There is absolutely no substance to the relationship. Brina is forced into marrying him with no way out because he declared it so? I didn't get this. He isn't a king, she wasn't indentured so why would she HAVE to marry him? Then she falls for him, yeah ok, but still, I didnt feel her love was genuine for him - lust- yes totally.
I could believe him falling for her and growing into a love, I think I felt his feelings towards her more, but not her feelings towards him.
*Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors
Overall, I had a hard time believing in this HEA

I enjoyed How to Train Your Earl! This is my first book by Amelia Grey and it won't be my last.
Brina Field is one of our main characters in this book and when she becomes the focus of the ton because of what our other main character, the Earl of Blacknight did, she decides she won't make things easy for him. See, he made a bet (in the books) that he would win her hand in marriage by the end of the Season. What he doesn't know is that after losing her husband in an accident, Brina has no interest in marriage again.
As Zane tries to win Brina over, she challenges him and pushes him to become more respectable. What she didn't plan on was falling for him and with Zane pushing her to accept his offer, Brina has to decide what she really wants for herself.
Although this was the third book in the series, I don't think I missed anything by diving into it without reading the first two so consider picking this one up when you get a chance. I'll definitely be checking out more by Grey when I can.
I enjoyed this charming romance book. The plot was good and the characters were adorable. Reading this was a great escape for an afternoon.
Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I kind of hate to see this series end since I have enjoyed all 3 books now but it is better than some authors that beat a series to death with substandard novels after a great start. Brina and Zane were a great mix, they played off each other and the author knew how to give her just enough desire to keep her from coming off like a cold-hearted widow. Zane was better at dealing with women than being an Earl but he was getting trained in both throughout this story. I would have given it 5 Stars if we had gotten a bit more details of the aftermath of the final "game" but then again I am a confirmed "revenge junkie" and I felt justice was not totally served here but it was a great ending for the story and for the series. I saw a lot of 3 Star reviews but I thought ti was good enough for 4 Stars but perhaps others did not read all 3 books since there is a bit of overlap that gives you a bit more depth in the story. 4 Stars and very enjoyable.
