In 1989, four friends witness a plane crash and are hunted by a mysterious entity one dubs The Bug Man. Gabe, Kimberly, Charlie and Sonya have long been drawn to Dagger Hill, something about it calls to them to hang out there regularly. But on their last summer before senior year, a plane crash right on top of it - and them. In the aftermath and injured, they notice Kimberly is missing - taken by a strange looking man wearing a gas mask. No one believes them, but no one can find Kimberly either. Meanwhile, strange events are happening all over town, including a video clerk seeing someone in the static of TVs and soon the kids are having strange visions. Is something haunting the town? Does it have anything to do with the big (secretive) tech center in town?
Horror, science-fiction and teen angst all blend together in this creeper of a story that will keep readers guessing and chilled.
This one was interesting! I don't normally read horror/thriller type books, but this one caught my attention. I think it was a little too...neat? There wasn't near as much drama as I was expecting going in, but the writing was still solid, the characters were interesting and relatable and the plot was cool!
If you like thriller type stories about friends/found family, this one is definitely for you!
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan for the eARC.
A paranormal mystery about four friends haunted by the uncertainty unleashed by an accident that might not have been an accident and the riveting tale of how they face their deepest fears and mindboggling experiences.
The ending was just too... perfect? Especially after all the book was--a plane crash and a stalker. Not sure how it ended so neatly. But honestly, the characters and the other 3/4s of the plot were so well written, that the ending didn't ruin it entirely. I loved their friendship! Everyone needs a group like them. I really liked this one, and sci fi is not my thing at all. I think teens will enjoy the pace and drama.
Really enjoyed this book. The plot was very entertaining and action packed, but it was very easy to follow. I will definitely be picking up other novels by Devon Taylor.
Disclaimer: I got this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is perfect for fans of Stranger Things and One of us is Lying! Four teens are hunted down by a strange force in 1989. Enter Gabe, Kimberly, Charlie, and Sonya-four best friends getting ready to make the most of their last summer together. They're headed off to college in different directions across the country but they made a vow to each other that they'd come back to their hometown. But, when their hometown is demolished after a plane crash, they discover that this wasn't an accident. There are references to Steven Speilberg without being too obvious! Overall, I enjoyed it, but it was creepy at times.
It’s 1989 and four childhood friends are getting ready for their summer before their senior year of high school. Their plans are put on hold however, when a plane crashes in their town, literally on top of them. This starts a chain of events that changes their lives forever as they realize that their sleepy town of Windale, Pennsylvania holds a mystery darker and far more dangerous than they could have ever known. Devin Taylor’s Dagger Hill is an excellent story of friendship, love, and terrifying horrors and is perfect for any reader who enjoys a blend of horror and sci-fi. Taylor manages to pay homage to genre heavyweights like Stephen King and Steven Spielberg without relying too much on direct references. Recommended for fans of Stranger Things, Karen McManus, and Caleb Roehrig.
