A terrific set of forced proximity romances with plenty of heat and angst to boot. The stories varied for me in terms of plot (I was definitely more of a fan of Oliveras' and Skilton's novellas than the first one), but overall it was a delightful rom-com anthology that will make you crave the hot summer months, especially in the dead of winter.
I love the premise of the book, three friends navigating life during a brown out in New York city. I really like the almost bi-lingual feel of the second story. The characters and stories had a different but interesting vibe than most romances. I wasn't crazy about the fact that there was no epilogue. The three friends continued to reference each other and their weekend trip but then nothing, No recap with each other, no idea if the trip happened. It felt unfinished.
My issue with novellas is always the length, so three novellas in one book actually works quite nicely for me. I'm not expecting a full length story, but I do get a full book. It's a great way to get to know new authors!
Summer in the City by Lori Wilde, Priscilla Oliveras, Sarah Skilton
Three novellas about three best friends stuck in a sudden summer blackout in New York and the strange unexpected things that happen for sudden instant unrequited love and revenge.
Well written, easy read with a few twists and intrigue lovely read for lazy days.
I would like to thank Netgalley, Kensington Publication, Lori WIlde, Priscilla Oliveras, and Sarah Skilton for the opportunity to read Summer in the City before it is published.
Summer in the City is a series of novellas centered around three best friends from New York City on a really hot summer day that ends with a citywide blackout. Lori WIlde takes the first story, Night at the Museum. Ria is an art restorer who has been tasked with restoring a series of pieces that were found in an attic. All four paintings are based on the four seasons and centered on two lovers. The first one she is working on is called Serendipty, is based in spring time. While she's restoring, she happens to start seeing the same man pretty much everywhere she goes. Not surprisingly, she starts to have feelings for the man that she's never met or even spoken to. She and Victor, the man she has seen around the city, end up meeting at an exhibit at the MOMA. Victor is a buyer who is trying to find the newest artist and newest piece of art for his clients. As the night progresses, Ria brings Victor down to her office space to see what she was working on, when the lights go out and they have no way to get back upstairs. Will they be able to handle the night by themselves? The next story, by Priscilla Oliveras, Lights Out, we meet Vanessa and Mateo. Vanessa is a journalist tasked with reviewing her former crush's new play that he has financed and written himself. She had been critical of one of his previous plays and was feeling some guilt about that. In the middle of opening night, the lights go out around the city. After the theater empties, Mateo and some other cast members head outside and start singing some of the songs from the show while people wait for cabs and Ubers. At some point, the crowd panics and Vanessa is injured. Mateo decides that they need to head to his apartment to wait out the power failure. Once there, old issues are brought up and both have to decide if they will forgive and forget or if they will carry these grievances with them. The final story, by Sarah Skilton, Mind Games, is about the final friend Alison. Alison heads to see her former lover's magic show. She is definitely not there to just be a peaceful audience member. She is there to make Nick sweat. She has her own grievances with how things went down with Nick. What she doesn't know when she goes in is that this is a job interview for Nick. Nick has to figure out a way to get Vanessa to stop being a heckler. By the time the power outage effects Nick and Alison, they are locked into his personal suite. Alison needs to figure out if she can forgive Nick and mend their hearts.
I really enjoyed these three books. One part of the book that I liked was that all three novellas were intertwined with the three women. I hadn't read a novella like this before, it was an intriguing way to read the books.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Ryan, Vanessa and Alison hope to have a summer they will never forget. This book was a quick read and written by some of romance best authors This book was entertaining.
A summer read, Summer in the City, a compilation by veteran authors Lori Wild, Priscilla Oliveras and Sarah Skilton is a light-hearted read. Three best friends find themselves in New York City during a city-wide blackout, add handsome men, interesting locations and voila! A heartfelt story ensues. A quick read, this is book meant for the beach.
Romance dashed with a little bit of erotica. New York City. A blackout. Seriously, what else do you need in a story?
This anthology was so fun and entertaining! I love romance and I love books set in NYC so I was thoroughly entertained throughout the entirety of this book.
The characters were all fun and engaging, and their stories made me want my own flirtatious, steamy night during a blackout in Manhattan.
I’m always on the hunt for a good anthology, and as soon as I came across this one it was practically screaming my name.
If you love rom coms and romance, don’t hesitate to pick this one up!
4 1/2 elevated to 5.
I picked up this anthology on account of Priscilla Oliveras since I've read one of her series and liked it a lot. I hadn't read the other two authors, but was pleasantly surprised.
The concept for this collection is really fun: three friends, each with their own story, with plans to get together for the weekend. But on Friday night those plans get thrown by a city-wide blackout in Manhattan.
Two of the stories are second chances with guys from the past, and one is a new prospect after four months of eye-flirting.
I loved all three stories, so well written and with engaging characters.
It was a quick read and I highly recommend it.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
This was a really good book, it had some surprises. It was very romantic, erotic, and fun to read. I have been reading books by Lori Wilde, This one surprised me because she was more than contemporary. I liked that about her books, you never know what to expect. I am glad that netgalley let me read this in exchange for an honest review,
