A really engaging book. It kept readers incredibly engaged and eager to share their learnings afterwards. The kids loved the gross factor and the use of colour. As an adult, I enjoyed learning something new too.
This book was super cool and although it was geared toward younger ones I will admit I learned something and the illustrations were awesome too
My boys loved learning about this during our germ science unit in homewschool! It really is a picture book about germs but is so organized and well written! What a wonderful tool for any parent or teacher
I received an electronic ARC from Lerner Publishing Group through NetGalley.
Levine brings readers into the world of germs. The beautiful photographs show how interesting germs can be and the accompanying text identifies several varieties that live in and around humans. This is not an easy topic to share with elementary level students and Levine writes at a level that works. Her text style offers facts and other information on each type of germ.
I'm looking forward to sharing this one as part of our STEM curriculum.
It is a wonderful picture book. It describes various small germs around us that infect us. Itvis very informative book for science geeks and ideal for introducing bacteria and viruses to little children.
Germs up close really does show you some interesting pictures of germs. It explains the types of germs and what illnesses they cause. This is a great book if you are learning about germs and health in school or even cells.
I would have recommended this to every science teacher and parent out there but sadly I can not.
I saw that toward the end of this book there was a real push for vaccines and it does have the Covid-19 virus in here. I think that is where it lost me. I do not get a flu shot every year either which is mentioned.
Then, there was then mention of masks to help the spread. That is not science. The science is that those masks are not going to work because the viruses are so small they can go through your mask and unless you have a properly sealed N95 or better mask then they won’t do you any good. Then, if those are not fitted properly they are useless as well. That is why they have fit test and even with those, not everyone will be fitted properly.
I think there could have been a mention of stay home when you are sick so that you do not get others sick. So many parents take their children to school, stores, parks,Chuck E. Cheese when they are sick. They use the excuse that they take them to school because everyone else lets their child. If everyone would stop spending their child, regardless of the next parents decision, then their child wouldn’t be passing it on to other children they come in contact with every day and hopefully won’t have it again the week after they get over it.
While there was mention of coughing into your arm to keep others from getting sick, there was a picture of two children bumping elbows instead of shaking hand but when you coughed into your arm I’m sure your elbow area was contaminated.
Anyway, that is enough of my rant. Overall I would give this book three stars. I would have given it 5 and am sad to say I can’t now.
I want to thank NetGalley and Millbrook Press for providing me this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Germs Up Close by Sara Levine is an excellent and informative primer on germs. Very engaging and easy to understand book filled with great photographs of germs to illustrate descriptions. The back of the book included a section with a glossary of germ related words, a list of ‘germy’ jobs and their descriptions, and a ‘learn more’ book list for future reading. #GermsUpClose #NetGalley
With a year-full of everything Covid-19, young readers have lots of questions about germs. Germs Up Close is a great book to help young readers understand what germs are, how they look, and the impact germs have on our life. The photographs are zoomed-in versions of real germs. Readers will love seeing these up close.
This book was really cool! I can definitely see it being a hit in elementary classrooms where they love gross things. I loved seeing the different types of germs magnified. I appreciated that it included COVID-19, but that it wasn’t the main focus. I also liked the end where it talks about how we can protect ourselves from the bad germs.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Overall, not the most exciting read, but well done. I think this would be good as a one page a day type thing instead of reading all at once. I'm also going to say that while this is oftentimes fascinating, if you have a germophobe child like I was, proceed with caution. This will either help or really really hurt their ability to function. Now, it's great. As a kid, this might have made my anxiety around germs so so much worse.
I was impressed by the quality of the microphotography when explaining each germ. This is a very useful book not only for kids but as well for adults who want to see better and start educating themselves about germs in general.
The pictures are accompanied by short descriptions and examples just enough to make you curious and wanting to know more. At the end of the short book one can find a short glossary of the terms used during the explanations as well as a list of “germy jobs” like immunologist, microbiologist, parasitologist etc.
I liked it, specially the images. Great little book for children that know a little bit about the topic.
My STEM loving 9 year old son loved this colorful, informative book. “Germs Up Close” is an easy to read, introduction to germs. Have your kids ever wanted to know why we ask them to wash their hands? This book has really neat and colorful illustrations of what germs look like. The illustrations in this book depict viruses, bacteria, Protozoa, and fungi. There is also a picture of the COVID-19 virus. My son loved learning more about each of the germs in the book. This book was just enough information to “plant a seed” for my child. It has encouraged him to deep dive into more detailed microbiology. What a neat and informative book! Perfect for class libraries as well as at home libraries. Thank you Sara Levine, NetGalley, and Millbrook Press for a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC of this book.

Germs Up Close is a non-fiction book with descriptions and colorful illustrations of viruses, bacterias, protozoa, and fungi.
It also gives a peek into how vaccines and our immune system work. This book has a list of jobs that are related to researching germs.
Germs Up Close can be used at home or in a classroom to teach about germs and the immune system. I recommend this book for children five years and above.
I give this book 4.5/5 stars as there is not much detail about each of the germs themselves in the book.
Suitable for lower middle school and lower level grades. Simple to read and understand, good illustrations, covers only the most common germs and Covid-19, so limited in scope. Not useful for high school or above. Could be useful for adult literacy level learners in a health education class as an introduction to the germ theory of disease. Good if used with the correct population of learners. I do wish it covered more common diseases.
This book was both informative and gross- 2 things kids like! The pictures of the germs are interesting and their descriptions are well thought about without being scary to children. This would be a good book for any kids especially one that is sick or asking questions about illnesses.
Germs Up Close is a really colorful attention-grabbing book to teach your kids about germs. My children loved looking at all the different structures of the germs.
I love the photos and information in "Germs Up Close"! The close-ups of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and other microorganisms were beautiful and attention grabbing. The text was informative and well written and provided just the right amount of information. My only issue is the vaccines being described as containing a "fake germ." This is inaccurate. I understand simplifying the concept for children, but I wish the author had stuck closer to facts in her definition.
Overall a great book. I'd recommend it for any science-minded kid.

Germs up close examines many of the tiny organisms that can wreck havoc in our bodies, from viruses to bacteria and beyond. The pictures are all actual pictures of germs--which is amazing! You can see up close exactly what these little beasties look like, and even includes a scan of the covid-19 virus! If you have a small scientist who is curious about germs, especially with current events, this would be a great book for them! There is also information on how germs enter our bodies and how we can work to prevent illness.
