Such A Quiet Place by Megan Miranda
Advanced Copy
Never read before - Finished 24/07
Harper - young, quiet, moderately successful career, respectful neighbour to the Truett’s… oh. And former roommate to Ruby who was just released from prison on a technicality 14 months after being found guilty of murdering the Truett’s. Ahh, wait! Did I say *former* roommate? To her surprise and ours, Harper now finds herself as Ruby’s roommate once again… and the rest of her neighbours have something to say about it, until something so shocking happens that they all turn to silence…
Such A Quiet Place is a mind bending story of Ruby, Harper and the the rest of their quiet neighborhood. From the beginning, you know exactly how and why Ruby was convicted of murder - but as small pieces start to fall into place; it makes you question… was it Ruby? Or was it actually someone else? Nothing can stay a secret forever, and as Megan Miranda slowly gives us glimpses into the secrets of every home in their neighborhood, you find yourself constantly working to find out the truth. But be warned, as soon as you are certain you’ve figured the truth out… you quickly find out you were wrong all along.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book (my first book read by Megan Miranda), and as someone who does not typically read a ton of suspenseful thrillers, I found this one full of riveting mystery and yet not too over the top, not crazily dark, and not overwhelmingly “psychological”. It was the perfect mix of all, and kept me captivated from the first page. (And you better bet I went straight to my library as soon as I finished this book and checked out all the books by Miranda they had available so I can read more of her work!)
Thank you @netgalley @simonschusterca @simonandschuster and @meganlmiranda for the gifted advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review & rating!
I love a slow burn thriller and this one was a great one. I was on edge at all times and felt completely creeped out as I didn’t know where it was going.
The book is about a small, peaceful college town that was shook by the deaths of two of its residents. One of their neighbours was charged with their murders, and after 14 months, is released from jail due to new evidence.
When Ruby returns back to the neighborhood after being released from jail and shows up at the doorstep of her former roommate Harper, the once close knit neighbourhood begins to fall apart even more.
Suddenly Harper begins to learn more about her neighbours and what they know about the night of the murders while struggling with trying to figure out if Ruby is guilty or not.
I enjoy a book where you begin with finding out what happened, and the rest of the book explains the why and the how. I only read this in bed at night, and it fully gave me the creeps multiple times.
If slow burn thrillers aren’t your thing, you likely won’t enjoy this one. But if you like being on edge while the facts sloooowwwly come out, this one is for you.
I like Megan Miranda's writing style, and how the story flows. However, the ending fell flat for me. There was some decent build up and I thought more was going to happen at the end, but it just didn't WOW me or shock me all that much.
Harper lives in a tight knit community, where everyone knows eachother, and are like a small family. After splitting with her husband, Ruby comes to live with her, and everyone feels like Ruby is trouble. When the Truetts are found dead in their home, Ruby is easy to blame when she had a key to their house and was seen out that night. After being convicted of the murders, Ruby is released 14 months later, and is determined to clear her name and prove her innocence. Until she confronts all the neighbors at a party, and is later found dead herself. Is the same person behind the murder of the Truetts ? Who can you really trust ?
3.5/5 Stars for me!
This book starts of VERY slow, if not for receiving a free copy by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, I may have DNF it. The books slowly picks up at around 50% and keeps gaining momentum for the remainder of the book. If you like slow burns in your thrillers and have the patience to get to the action, I think you’ll like this one.
Toward the beginning of the book, I had a hard time remember who all of the characters. There were so many characters to remember and because this was about a whole neighbourhood, these characters were mentioned repetitively throughout each chapter. Once you’ve gained your character foot it gets easier but still a few names escapes me.
Overall, unique concept with story altering details revealed right up until the last page which I always love! If the book got moving around 25% of the way through, I would have rated this book much higher.
This is the fourth book by Megan Miranda that I have read in the past year, and I think it is finally time for me to admit that she just isn’t the author for me. None of her books have been bad, but none of them have blown me away. Unfortunately, I found Such a Quiet Place on the slow side and I didn’t feel any of the tension that I was supposed to. The characters felt very one dimensional and it often took me a moment to remember who was who. The ending wasn’t overly shocking or satisfying, but at that point, I was just happy to be finished. Others have loved this book, so I’m sure it is a classic case of “it’s not you, it’s me.” Megan Miranda just isn’t for me.
Thank you to the publisher for my copy of this - all opinions are my own.
Yet another perfecting smoldering psychological thriller from Megan Miranda! I have to say, after a bit of a slow start with the story, I became totally engrossed in this story and the characters and could NOT set it down.
Megan has a very specific skill of creating really complex characters who also manage to stay JUST enough out of total focus so you can't fully get a handle on their secrets or intentions, and that makes for fantastic reading every single time.
I loved the central plot to this story, I loved the did she or didn't she mystery of whether Ruby committed the original murder. I loved the slow building tension as the community reacts to Ruby's return to the community. I love the twists and I love how Megan brings her stories to explosive conclusions.
Which is all to say, this is the exact kind of perfect summer reading that will keep you glued to the pages when you want to just relax with your book. A must have!
Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda is a twisty, gripping thriller. This novel takes place in a little private neighborhood near a lake. It's also situated near a college so not only do most of the neighbors know each other from living in a small community but also a lot of them work at the college too leading their lives to really intertwine.
Harper has lived in the community for 5 years and after her boyfriend moved out, Ruby moves in with her. It seems like the perfect set up until the night the Truett's deaths are ruled suspicious and Harper is sure she heard Ruby come in at 2 am and jump straight into the shower. Ruby is convicted and once she's out, she shows right back up and acts like she never left. Harper isn't sure what to do, how can she live with someone who may be a murderer and everyone is suspicious of. She starts to receive threatening notes and now Harper needs to figure out what's going on before someone becomes another victim.
This thriller had me guessing people including Harper until everything became revealed at the end. This was such a quick read and I loved the format of it following the community over a few days.
Thank you to Netgalley, Simon & Schuster Canada and the author for the opportunity to read an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Read if you like: neighbourhood mystery/thrillers.

This book hooked me right from the start. Ruby returns back to Harper's house after getting out of prison after being wrongfully committed for killing her next door neighbours. The issue is the rest of the community believes she is guilty. Harper tries to solve the mystery to see if she is living with a murderer.
-
The pacing was quick and I wanted to keep reading. I find Miranda's writing is generally fast paced and gripping for me! The only thing that bugged me was Harper was a bit of a pushover, which I understand why she was, but I just wanted to yell at her to stick up for herself!

CW: death, murder, divorce and abandonment.
I requested Such a Quiet Place because I love the quick juiciness of Megan Miranda's books, and this one definitely did not disappoint!
Harper Nash lives in Hollow's Edge, a sweet little suburban community with lake access, and a pool, where everyone knows their neighbours and most of them also work together at the local university. It's a quiet, idyllic place until a couple in their circle - Brandon and Fiona Truett - are found dead in their home, and Harper's roommate, Ruby, is convicted of killing them.
Fourteen months later, Ruby is released from prison when her conviction is overturned due to a technicality. She returns to Hollow's Edge, to Harper's home, stirring up old resentments and fostering a general sense of distrust in the community, because if she really is innocent, then who killed the Truetts?
This was a good one, I liked the slow burn and really enjoyed imagining the feelings of the residents of Hollow's Edge at Ruby's return. I like when I don't know who the killer is right away, and I really didn't in this one!
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the ARC!
Megan Miranda has never disappointed with a thriller, in my opinion, and Such a Quiet Place was absolutely no different.
The time spent building the characters and the setting added to the overwhelming feeling of suspense. The twists were everything I wanted them to be and as per usual didn’t see them coming. I do wish the ending had a little bit more too it, it felt a little abrupt, I wanted some more detail.
Thanks @netgalley for the digital ARC - Such a Quiet Place was published July 13!
I've read a few books from Megan Miranda now and I enjoy her writing style. I find she has a slow build, but not too slow. The twists are not huge, but still enough to get you thinking and I like that. As soon as I read this synopsis, I knew I needed it and it ended up being a good read for me.
A private, idyllic neighbourhood, friendly neighbours who hung out all the time. Sounds perfect right? Until the murders of the Truett couple. The accused? One of their own - Ruby Fletcher. A year and a half later and the small community is still simmering, nervous and feeling trapped. But now, with her conviction overturned, Ruby is back in town and ends up right back at the house she shared with Harper Nash, who is both shocked and terrified at her return. Within days, rumors are circulating again and it becomes clear that not everyone was honest the night of the murders. Ruby is trying to prove her innocence and Harper is now questioning everything.
I really liked the plot and found the level of suspense to be the perfect amount. I finished this one pretty quickly and it actually had a pretty satisfying ending that I hadn't fully figured out. I had a lot of suspicions throughout the novel, but couldn't quit piece it together. My only complaint would be that there were quite a few characters. It took me a while to keep track of who was who and some were barely mentioned at all. Overall, a good book and if you've liked Miranda's other books you'll most likely enjoy this one too!
Thanks to Simon and Schuster Canada for my review copy. Look for this one in stores on July 13, 2021.
A mysterious murder in an idyllic and close-knit neighbourhood is featured in bestselling author Megan Miranda’s latest suspense novel “Such A Quiet Place” set for release on 07/13/2021.
Known for her fast-placed and riveting plots with plenty of shocking twists, fans of the author may find some disappointment with the sluggish pace of most of this novel, It’s certainly not the stay up late addictive read of her previous work. Unlikeable characters and a “closed room” type of setting keeps the energy of the fairly low and, at times, difficult to push through. Many plot elements were reminiscent of other recent thriller\mystery novels and left me with a somewhat mundane recycled story that never really peaks or grabs your interest.
Worth a read for Miranda fans, just not one of her “must have” novels.
Sincere thanks to @simonschusterca and @netgalley for an advanced readers copy.
A common statement made regarding modern living: “I don’t even know who my neighbors are”. After reading Miranda’s latest book, I’m not sure that’s such a bad thing.
In the tight-knit community of Hollow’s Edge, neighbors know each other, gathering in each other’s homes or at the local pool, gossiping and empathizing, generally living in each other’s space. And then the Truett’s die under suspicious circumstances. Ruby is found guilty, and why not? She had access to the house, she’s acted suspiciously, and was accused of stealing from her neighbors. And those darned security cameras saw her out that night. But when she’s suddenly released after 14 months and the charges dropped, nobody knows what to think. And why has she returned to Hollow’s Edge? Is she set to claim her next victim?
A slow start had me worried about a book that had been lauded as a psychological thriller, one of my favorite genres. I shouldn’t have worried, because once this story got going, I couldn’t flip pages quickly enough. The paranoia and suspense that oozed from some of these pages, with well-timed twists, had me guessing and re-guessing, never sure of what the final outcome would be.
This book will be a great addition to that thriller stack that keeps you company poolside this summer. Thanks to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Canada for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is available now.
I’ve loved Megan Miranda since All The Missing Girls 5 years ago and have picked up every book released since then.
Such A Quiet Place did not disappoint - it may be my favourite one yet! A thriller filled with lots of suspense, twists and turns… what more could you want?
This book had a great plot and a great ending. Would definitely recommend to thriller fans!
I really enjoyed this book! I did find the beginning a little bit slow but it took no time picking up and I spent the rest of the book with my head swirling with conspiracies. I loved The Girl From Widow Hills so I was very excited for this book and it did not disappoint. The ending was great and just what I was hoping for! There were aspects of the book that I haven’t read in a thriller in a while which kept me intrigued. I would definitely recommend this book!
A year and a half ago, Brandon and Fiona Truett were murdered in their own home in the small Hollow’s Edge neighborhood. All fingers pointed towards fellow resident, Ruby Fletcher. Now Ruby’s case has been overturned and she is back living in Hollow’s Edge – much to the shock of the residents – like nothing ever happened. Harper Nash was her roommate when the murders took place, and as Harper has no idea how to turn Ruby away, still is her roommate. Once the threats come and Harper has a chance to dig around and investigate, she realizes that perhaps the testimonies given at the trial may not be truthful. But why would they set Ruby up? And who is the real killer? These are the questions Harper needs to find out, and soon, as their may be more murders on the way.
I think everyone should know that I love books with female lead characters, one of the reasons why I enjoyed this book. The other reason, Such A Quiet Place is brilliantly crafted and wonderfully thrilling - a perfect summer read. And as this is the first Megan Miranda book for me, I will definitely look into reading her backlists and future books.
A big thanks to NetGalley and publisher for an advance copy for review.
For fans of Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere
I think Megan Miranada is one of the best, current domestic suspense authors. She is brilliant at creating a creepy, relatable atmosphere filled with a cast of characters that you might find in your own life.
In Such A Quiet Place, Miranda sets her mystery in Hollow’s Edge, a private suburb filled with nosey parkers. They have a neighborhood watch, shared amenities and their own message board where everyone is in each other’s business. All was good in the hood until Brandon and Fiona Truett were found dead in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning. Their dog walker and fellow Hollow’s Edge resident Ruby, was convicted for the double murder but after 14 months in jail she was exonerated on a technicality. She is now back baby, and her former roommate and narrator Harper, isn’t sure if she is back for revenge, to clear her name, or to start fresh.
One of the themes of this novel is surveillance. How many times do you appear on someone’s camera each day? Can this be used to save you or incriminate you? Your digital footprint can be easily manipulated against you. This novel definitely made me paranoid 😳
This is a true domestic suspense, which means no crazy motivations, unreliable narrators or forced twists. If you like thrillers packed with intense drama you will probably find this a slow read.
I'm a fan of Megan Miranda's writing and was eager to read her new novel, Such a Quiet Place.
Hollow's End is a gated neighbourhood, an idyllic place to live, where the neighbours all know each other, host neighbourhood events, maintain an online community board, help each other out and more. Idyllic up to the point where two residents were murdered a year ago. Another resident of Hollow's End was convicted of the murders - but the conviction was overturned. And Ruby has returned to the neighbourhood/scene of the crime. (And isn't the name Hollow's End just a little bit creepy?)
Ohh, the places this plot could go! And go it does. We meet all of the inhabitants and realize that that perfect veneer hides the sins and omissions of almost every resident. Harper Nash is the one resident who was close to Ruby. Harper was never quite sure of Ruby's guilt, but went to court and dutifully testified as to what she knew. Was it really Ruby? Harp still has doubts. But, she's under pressure from the rest of the neighbourhood to stick with the facts they presented last year. They also want Harper to convince Ruby to leave. Ruby is never given a voice, but is instead revealed through everyone else's memories, perceptions and actions. The first half of the book is slower while we come to know all the players.
I loved the uncertainty as to who the real culprit was. Miranda kept me guessing with each new twist added to the narrative. I suspected every last one! Things move along much quicker in the second half of the book as the tension ramps up.
This is a great mystery read, but also a nice exploration of privilege, mob mentality, community and more. It's more than a little scary as it's not far from the truth at all. The ending caught me unawares and was a wee bit of a stretch. But overall, another great read from Megan Miranda.
I've read several of Miranda's back listed books and have enjoyed them all so I had no doubt I would enjoy Such A Quiet Place. I'm here to tell you it did not disappoint, I loved the slow burn whodunit style of writing that kept me interested and invested throughout the novel. I loved how the mystery unraveled and the reveal at the end surprised me.
The novel takes place in a community called Hollow's Edge a picture perfect communit. Its the type of community where everyone knows eachother, they have frequent get togethers and everyone is always involved in everyones business. Until the Truetts were found murdered in their home. The next door neighbor Ruby was convicted of the murder. Now 18 months later the conviction has been overturned and Ruby has returned leaving the community is on edge. Making uncomfortable tension in the neighborhood, suspicious activity starts happening in the community. It appears that some neighbors are hiding secrets, is it possible that Ruby is innocent, and if so who is responsible for the Truetts murder?

When Ruby, who has been convicted of killing her neighbours is released from jail after 14 months and returns home, the whole neighbourhood is on edge …
✔️ a great ending
✔️ a lot of characters and although hard to keep track at times, it does make for a large list of suspects
✔️ very much a locked door mystery style book that takes place in a close knit neighbourhood
✖️ a real slow burner - nothing much happens in the first half of the book
✖️I am always complaining that too many books have multiple POVs but in this case, I would have liked Ruby’s POV as well
