I loved the idyllic setting of this book...a lakeside community where everyone seems to be invested in their homes and lives. However, the plot moved to slow for me and there were so many holes that I wasn't that interested in it. I had so many lingering questions by the end of the book that will go unanswered.
The first half of the book took me forever to get in to. I started and stopped several times. Once I got to the second half, I flew through it. I would have liked to have more POV of some of the other characters but overall this was a good Who Done It that was not easy to figure out in the first few chapters.
Wow! Wow! Wow! Megan Miranda is quickly becoming the Queen of the thriller in my universe. This was the fifth novel I have read by her and every time she keeps me on the edge of my seat and leaves me wanting more, She writes well developed and relatable female characters in a genre where that is not that easy to find. Kudos to Ms. Miranda for another job well done.
Once again, Megan Miranda has written a thought-provoking thriller!
Set in the idyllic neighborhood of Hollow’s Edge, Such a Quiet Place demonstrates that the grass really isn’t greener on the other side. Hollow’s Edge, advertised as a picture-perfect neighborhood to prospective residents, has its fair share of secrets. Some of those secrets are even deadlier than others.
Through the events that transpire in Hollow’s Edge, Miranda explores how fear can impact a person’s life. Fear can cause one to misperceive harmless actions as threats and when afraid, a person’s sole focus then becomes survival. We all know people are capable of many things in survival mode - even murder.
Such a Quiet Place is a cleverly written tale that slowly reveals the many dark, hidden truths of Hollow’s Edge. This book is sure to delight both longtime fans (like me) and new fans.
Many thanks to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the e-ARC. All opinions are my own.
I was lucky to be able to read an early copy of this book with @lovearctually over on Instagram. ☀️ This story is about a quiet neighborhood where everyone is friends and colleagues, as most also work at the nearby college. That is until one of their own is charged with murder and now 14 months later they are back and out to find the truth of what really happened. I really liked the quiet almost ominous feel that you get while reading this story. I felt like the end could have been developed a little more but overall its still a great read, I just like my books tied up with neat little bows. Thank you so much Simon and Schuster for my copy for review and for the fun interview with Megan Miranda. It was so fun to hear her thoughts on her book and writing process. This was another fun slow burn thriller that had me guessing till the end of the book! Her books make such great summer reads.
Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda is a very highly recommended mystery set in one quiet neighborhood.
Hollow’s Edge was a quiet neighborhood until the murder of Brandon and Fiona Truett. Now a year and a half later the neighbors are trapped on the street, unable to sell their homes while seeing the empty Truett house daily. Ruby Fletcher was convicted of the double murder, largely based on the testimony of all the neighbors, but now her conviction has been overturned. Ruby, 25, was the roommate of Harper Nash, 30, and when released she returns to Harper's home and the neighborhood knowing full well the effect her return will have on the neighbors. Harper doesn't tell her to leave, knowing Ruby has no place to go, but she doesn't know exactly what Ruby is planning, especially after Ruby says that someone will pay for her incarceration. Ruby clearly is taking advantage of Harper, and the tension and suspicions in the neighborhood rise.
This is a wonderfully written mystery with enough twists to keep you guessing about who did what. I love the description that it is an updated village murder mystery, because that is exactly what it feels like, only with house cameras, cell phones, and a community website. All the same people are still living on the street when Ruby returns, so all the players are in place to figure out what really happened. All the neighbors seem to be normal middle class people, only Ruby stands out as not one of them. But, how much do you share with your neighbors? Can you really trust all of them? What secrets are left unspoken? What misunderstandings are perpetuated?
Miranda's writing is outstanding. She sets up the information you need to know at the beginning of the plot, telling you about the neighbors, who they are and where they live (map included). This does make for a slower start, but since Ruby shows up unannounced at Harper's at the start, it also serves to increase the ominous overall feeling that something is going to happen. Harper is a great character and narrator. You quickly learn her background and what she is thinking. It becomes clear that Ruby has plans and, with the annual 4th of July party approaching, it appears that something will be happening. The final denouement was perfect. I didn't have a clue how this novel was going to turn out until the end.

Megan Miranda is one of my favorite authors. I wish I could give this a five-star review. I have to admit, this book got a little redundant and petty in the middle. But the ending made up for it with a good twist I didn't see coming.
As anticipated, I enjoyed this book. Megan Miranda is an auto-buy author for me and “Such a Quiet Place” was the perfect suspenseful murder-mystery that I needed in order to get out of the reading slump I was in due to my last book 😅
I enjoyed the slow burning story line with this book and loved that the plot twists kept me second guessing everyone and everything up until the end. The book was told solely from Harper’s perspective and while most of the characters in this book were unreliable and not super likable, they were fun to meet and I actually enjoyed how it didn’t feel like I was meant to love the characters. Since this story focuses on neighborhood drama, untrustworthy neighbors and how you never know what happens behind closed doors, this felt appropriate and intentional.
If you’re looking for a quick, whodunnit murder mystery with entertaining neighborhood drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat, I recommend checking out “Such a Quiet Place” by Megan Miranda.
Miranda is one of my favorite authors, but after reading this book, I was disappointed with the ending. It seemed like this whole build up of what really happened with Ruby fell flat. I will give it 3 stars because I was pulled in the whole time until the last 10% of the book.
Megan Miranda is normally an automatic read for me, but this was not one of my favorites. I enjoyed the concept and the idea, but the characters were not very likable. If I were going to recommend a Miranda book, I'd rather someone read The Girl from Widow Hills or The Last House Guest.
Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda is a decent read, but not one of my favorites. It was okay but tough to get through.
First, I want to thank the publisher for giving me early access to review this book. I am a fan of Megan Miranda and always read her books when they come out. I really enjoyed this one, especially the first half. I feel like things got a little jumbled towards the middle and felt like the characters were grasping at straws to solve the case. All in all, I did like this book though. I would definitely recommend it to but if you have been considering doing so.
Such a Quiet Place is the new book from Megan Miranda.
"Ruby is back in Hollow's Edge, a quiet neighborhood in a smaill college town. At least it was until Ruby was convicted of killing the Truetts. But her conviction was overturned based on some "new" evidence and Ruby has moved back in with Harper, who doesn't really want her there. Now neighbors are afraid and don't know who to trust. Because when Ruby was convicted they didn't tell the whole story...and now another neighbor is dead."
This is a slow burn, domestic thriller. Miranda lets us know that most of the neighbors have something to hide. She doesn't reveal the truth until it's too late - and it's a surprise. You probably won't guess the killer or what the secrets are. Miranda does a good job disguising it.
There's a part of the ending that was a little disappointing. Miranda goes a different route but I was left with a "Oh, is that it?" I have to appreciate that it was not a cliche ending.
This is not a fast-paced thriller. It's like floating lazily down the river and rounding a bend to find some Class IV rapids. Fans of Miranda's previous books will enjoy this one.
This domestic suspense novel starts out slow and builds up speed about halfway through. I love a good book about a close knit neighborhood with many secrets and this one did not disappoint. Many characters involved in this one as the main character tries to determine what everyone's motives are and how far they will go to keep their family safe. I definitely enjoyed the second half more than the first.
Read this if you enjoyed Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson
I really thought I was going to love it. The beginning was boring but it had me hooked because I live in a neighborhood that is very similar. The forced proximity, the feeling of "watching out" for each other and the message board I was intrigued. However, the characters were unlikable, not believable and the twist or reveal at the end was just ... okay. I didn't guess it but I wasn't blown away or shocked. I also thought this book was a little long for what it was trying to do and I wish the chapters were shorter too but thats just me!
I did not think I was going to like this book as much as I did!! I think it’s probably best Megan Miranda book I’ve read. The first half of the story really sets the stage for the more thriller- filled second half. Unlike some other reviewers, I did not find the first half too boring or slow paced because I was learning about so many different characters, the murder case and Ruby’s involvement in the story. That being said, the second half was WAY better and filled with suspense, mind games and unexpected twists. Solid thriller overall.
Harper Nash has had over a year to reset her life. It’s been 14 months since Ruby’s trial ended. It’s been 14 months since she saw her roommate go to prison for the murder of their neighbors, the Truetts. It was 14 months of a 20 year sentence. And that’s when she got released on a technicality.
Everyone in Hollow’s Edge was shocked. It was a small community, a group of houses where young professionals lived, most of them working at the nearby college or the prep school. They were water people, so they spent their evenings and summers together at their pool, or kayaking in the nearby lake, or grilling and drinking and laughing together.
Harper had bought the house originally with her fiancé when he was finishing his degree. Once he got his doctorate, he left. He left Hollow’s Edge and he left her.
Ruby had been an undergrad living a few doors down with her father. When her father decided to move to Florida, Ruby asked Harper if she could move in with her. Harper, still in shock from her fiance’s departure, agreed. But Ruby never quite fit in with the group. The Hollow’s Edge homeowners had their own message board, where they shared everything. Ruby was never asked to join in.
Then the Truetts were found, the victims of carbon monoxide poisoning. Someone had let their dog out then started their car in the closed garage while they slept. The carbon monoxide detector that was in all the other Hollow’s Edge homes was missing from the Truetts’ upstairs hallway.
One of the first neighbors on the scene, Chase, was a police officer, and he helped his fellow officers collect evidence. He used the community message boards to find the video clips that showed Ruby out that night. He told them to be careful what they said to the police when questioned, not to offer extra information, to keep them from getting distracted. He helped convict Ruby of murder. Then he was used as the technicality that let her go free.
Harper was in her kitchen, slicing up fruit, when Ruby appeared back in the neighborhood. Not just back in the neighborhood, back in the house, in Harper’s house, acting like she’d just been gone for a quick trip and was ready to get settled back in her room. Harper didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know how to tell her no. But she knew that Hollow’s Edge, which was just getting back to normal, would never again be that quiet place she once thought it was.
Such a Quiet Place looks at the secrets and lies that are just under the surface of the lives we pretend to lead. Author Megan Miranda explores the areas between who we tell others we are and who we really are. She pulls apart the façade of a neighborhood to show us what’s really underneath. She creates layers of personality that keep us stuck, that cause us to make choices without thinking things through, that make us look away from what we don’t like, what we don’t understand, what we understand all too well.
I couldn’t stop reading this book. The way Miranda uses her characters to reveal the darkness of human character is fascinating. The more Harper learned about her neighbors, the more lies that got stripped away, the more secrets that were revealed, the more I was drawn into Harper’s world. And the twists? They were amazing. Fans of psychological thrillers will not want to miss Such a Quiet Place.
Egalleys for Such a Quiet Place were provided by Simon & Schuster through NetGalley, with many thanks.
I really enjoyed this mystery-thriller set in a college-town neighborhood where everyone knows each other. There are so many possible suspects and it was fun to follow along as Harper tries to uncover the truth. The entire time, you don’t know who to really trust because everyone has secrets. Just when you think you know “whodunnit”, the story curves in another direction. The second half of the book picked up the pace and I stayed up late to finish it. This was a great read!
Thank you @simonandschuster for the physical arc and the @netgalley digital arc as well as the “Spill the Tea” book talk with Megan Miranda. All thoughts expressed are my own.
Hollow’s Edge was always a quiet neighborhood. Set in a college town on a small lake, it is home to a tight-knit group of neighbors. But that all changes when the Truetts are murdered. Ruby Fletcher was found guilty and sent to prison. But then her conviction was overturned, and now she’s back in Hollow’s Edge. The entire neighborhood is in a frenzy. They do not trust Ruby, and they don’t want her there. But if Ruby didn’t kill the Truetts, who did? And what are they willing to do to keep their secret safe?
Such A Quiet Place is told from the perspective of Harper Nash, one of the homeowners in the neighborhood. Harper originally brought Ruby into the neighborhood as a roommate after her fiancé left her. Harper feels responsible for Ruby, but is also afraid of her, not quite believing that she is completely innocent.
This is a very atmospheric novel. There’s not much excitement to start, it is quite slow from the beginning. There’s lots of community drama. Parts of it reminded me of reading Nextdoor. But once the story picks up, it is a quick, propulsive read. I read it in a single afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, looking back over what I had read, not a ton happened in the plot. I found the ending to be a letdown, but overall I enjoyed this story!
Thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for the review copy! All opinions are my own.
I love Megan Miranda. I was so happy to read another one of her books. Everything about this book made me want to keep reading. I loved the characters, the slow reveal of details and I just couldn't stop reading it.
