I found Such a Quiet Place an ok read. It was a slow burner throughout and I wasn't overly interested in the characters and didn't really connect with any of them.
I have read one book previously by Megan Miranda which I enjoyed so, even though this one didn't work for me, I will look forward to reading further books in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for my ARC.
I enjoyed this book, as Megan Miranda is a great story teller. Maybe a bit slower than her usual reads, but ends up with a good ending.
Hollow’s Edge sounds like a beautiful little community, but after a murder, and then the accused coming back, nobody can relax. I don’t want to give too much away, but a solid story overall.
Fourteen months ago, Ruby Fletcher was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the double murder of her neighbors, Brandon and Fiona Truett. Today, she waltzes back into the neighborhood without skipping a beat, having been freed on a procedural technicality. Suddenly the neighborhood of Hollow’s Edge is unsettled and on guard. Not only do they believe there is a murderer in the midst, but one who they all testified against.
Harper, Ruby’s roommate, was the only neighbor to testify for the defense, but she is as shocked as anyone at Ruby’s return. And while she isn’t convinced Ruby is guilty like all of the others, she isn’t so sure she’s innocent either. What she is sure of is that the investigation was handled incorrectly by the police and not everyone was telling the full truth about the night the Truetts died. After all that happened, why would Ruby choose to come back to Hollow’s Edge, and is she the real danger in the neighborhood?
This is my fourth Megan Miranda novel and so I feel confident in saying I think I have pinned down a signature style for her. A slow burn, character-driven suspense, full of mostly unlikeable people who you probably can’t trust. One might think this would get repetitive, but each book has its own feel, and I’ve enjoyed them all for various reasons. Miranda also has a real knack for setting a mood and nailing the claustrophobic and gossipy atmosphere of the small towns and neighborhoods she sets her books in. That very much continued to be the case here, and I really enjoyed digging into all the secrets and deceit of Hollow’s Edge.
Recommended for: people who don’t mind tension versus thrills, fans of revealing the ugliness hiding under idyllic facades, and anyone who loves to sit back and observe the shade on the Nextdoor app. Don’t look at me like that, you know you do it too...

Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for an advanced reader copy of this book for review.
*3.5 stars rounded up.
A lovely suburban neighborhood is rocked by a double murder and Ruby, a young neighbor woman, is found guilty of the crime and sentenced to twenty years in prison. But fourteen months later, she is released on a technicality and returns to her former home where her dumfounded roommate, Harper, is too spineless to turn her away. What will this closely-knit neighborhood do about a murderer in their midst? For if Ruby wasn't the murderer, it must be one of them.
This is a slow-burner of a thriller with a cast of thoroughly unlikeable characters. So glad they are not MY neighbors with their secrets and plotting! The story is told entirely from Harper's pov--and not only is she spineless, she's pretty darned clueless as well. This is a fast read, perfect for summer escapism.
I received an arc from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks for the opportunity.
I need to preface this review with a note.
In my opinion, this novel was marketed in the wrong genre. This (again my opinion) is not a thriller. It is a very slow burn mystery/drama.
Unfortunately this alters my review. I did not enjoy this novel as a thriller. I did however enjoy this novel as a slow burn mystery/drama. I went in with the expectation that this novel would be a thriller and now, I don’t feel the same about this novel.
For this review I will tell you what I enjoyed.
The character study was well done.
The mystery build up was chef’s kiss amazing.
The writing was on point.
The atmosphere….so good.
The story had me turning the pages.
Overall. I can not fault the writer. She wrote a fantastic book. I do wish it had been marketed in the right genre.
If you like slow burn, atmospheric mysteries. Pick this one up. If you are expecting a fast paced thriller with a shocking twist….move on.
Living in a close knit community, Harper and her friends are devasted when a family dies of carbon monoxide poisioning When the CO2 alarm is found missing, the police suspect foul play. Thanks to witnesses and a collection of photos from cameras on doors, Harper's roommate is accused and sent to jail. Question is...is she guilty or was she railroaded?
I have never lived in a place where I am living in tight quarters with my neighbors, where you can often hear arguments from next door. But I can picture this community and the secrets that people are trying to hide from others. As they say...who knows what goes on behind closed doors...maybe more people than you think! And who knows what may happen when everyone bands together and decides to keep secrets.
While I enjoyed the book, I could not connect with any of the characters.
Thanks to the publisher for an advanced ecopy of Such A Quiet Place by Megan Miranda.
Megan Miranda has become a comfort read author for me ever since All the Missing Girls came out a few years ago. I have not missed an adult book of hers since. Each of her books takes place in unique communities: woods, beach, lake, etc. Each has a female protagonist who has serious insecurities because of things from her past.
Such A Quiet Place follows the author's typical format. Ruby, a young woman convicted of murdering two neighbors, recently released on a technicality, returns to the neighborhood. It becomes clear she is up to no good, but what is her motive? Is she trying to prove her innocence or just seeking revenge on the neighbors who testified against her? Harper was Ruby's roommate and is the real lead in this story. She is alarmed and unhappy about Ruby returning to her house, using her clothes, taking off in her car, etc. Harper is a conflict-averse personality type that feels powerless to stop Ruby from running all over her.
It turns out that everyone in the lakeside community is harboring secrets and grudges against each other....some of which comes out in the neighborhood online message board....mirroring how different people behave online vs in person where everyone holds their tongue and festers inside rather than openly communicate and get past their issues with each other.
The fun in the book is finding out what kind of mundane and not-so-mundane dirt Ruby has on each neighbor. I enjoyed the multiple mysterious paths those secrets took me down. Some reveals were big, some small, but I felt the resolution suited the pace of the book. I felt this was a very solid psychological thriller for Megan Miranda fans. As always, I will be anxiously awaiting her next!
Ruby returns to Hollow’s Edge after 14 months. She was not gone by choice but found guilty of killing her neighbors. Now exonerated, she is back, and everyone is on edge. You see, most of them had a hand at implicating her in the crime and think she is still guilty. Ruby has nothing to lose and wants to prove her innocence so is not going to just stand back and be a friendly neighbor any longer.
A small community, nosy neighbors and a murder or two is the backdrop for this slow burn thriller. Everyone is a suspect at some point, and it kept me guessing until the end. I really enjoy Megan Miranda books!
All aboard the unpopular opinion train. Toot toot!
In a one sentence answer: I was bored. In a long winded Bookstagram review answer: I felt the information provided was extremely repetitive. I get it’s a tight knit community. I get someone was murdered! But, I felt that reminder came up every other chapter and I wanted something more.. in depth? I also feel like it wrapped up well, but left a lot of unanswered questions and loose ends. Obviously, can’t go into them without a major spoiler alert, so if you’ve read and want to discuss, let me know!
Minus the loose ends, the ending did satisfy me and I liked how it was done. I was unsuspecting of the killer, and thought it played out well. That line, “Can you believe it? Harper, of all people” gave me an actual out loud “wow” moment at the end when it was repeated. (Not a spoiler promise!) I loved that. That was the MM plot I was looking for! I love Megan Miranda as a writer, as she’s always keeping me on my toes with red herrings and right in front of your face answers.
Narration saved me on this once again. (Audio.. to the rescue!) You may know Rebekkah Ross from other Megan Miranda audiobooks, or Southern Side of Paradise by KWH! I realized I’ve listened to her several times and really have enjoyed it. I’ll be looking out for more in the future.
Overall, it was okay. It may be because I listened during the 4th of July so I wanted a little razzle dazzle, boom pop, but this one just missed the mark for me. This is for fans of Megan Miranda and locked door mysteries! Thank you @simonaudio for the gifted copy. Such a Quiet Place is out the 13th!
I loved the plot of this one! Hollow’s Edge is a small community located across the lake from a college. All of the neighbors look out for one another, celebrate life’s milestones together, and then one of the couples ends up murdered. One of their own, Ruby, is convicted and now she’s back. Ruby had been staying with Harper when she was arrested. Now she comes knocking on her door again and Harper is terrified. What really happened the night of the murder? Could there be another victim?
I loved how inquisitive Harper was. Always questioning, always thinking. I liked the community atmosphere and the “HOA” aspect. It was spot on. The mystery itself was well played out and it definitely kept me interested.
I LOVED reading about these families in this community. I don’t really even have the words for how real I found these relationships, both good and bad. I was so invested in these characters and this story.
Along with the super authentic characters, the timing of this story is perfect. All of the people in the neighborhood work at a school and have the summers off together, which is pretty chill until some sh*t goes down!
I can’t wait for this book to be in the world!
A small town drama. Plenty of nosy neighbors. Two murders. One conviction. One overturned conviction.
Ruby is newly released from prison and shows up unexpectedly shows up at her former roommate's house. Harper is stunned to find Ruby in her house. Why would Ruby come back to a neighborhood that convicted her of murder? Was Ruby indeed guilty?
Harper is caught in the middle when Ruby acts as if nothing ever happened. All the neighbors are on high alert. With everyone always watching, someone must know what really happened when the neighbors were murdered.
A slow burner with a few twists that are unexpected.
Thanks to netgalley and Simon & Schuster for the arc.
I may be the odd one out but... I found this slow. Ruby has returned to the neighborhood after being released from prison due to prosecutorial issues in her trial for the double murder of a couple in their home. She's back to Harper's house and Harper finds it impossible to make her leave, except when she takes Harper's car and disappears for a couple of days. Almost everyone is affiliated in some way with the local college, they use a list-serv (it's not used effectively in the novel), and they want nothing more than for Ruby to go away. And then she does. No spoilers from me. I found the characters a little confusing (who is important and why?) the legal issue that freed Ruby is not explained only alluded to, and a certain bit of backstory isn't revealed until very late (not generally a problem but here it's not really critical to the suspense). The writing feels detached and mannered. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. I've liked Miranda's work in the past and I'm sure others will like this more than I did.
Such a Quiet Place takes place in a small community. After two neighbors were found dead, Ruby was convicted of their murders. But after her trial gets thrown out, she's back in Hollow's Edge leaving everyone on edge, but especially her old roommate Harper. Harper doesn't know if she can trust Ruby, and when she starts getting threatening notes she's even more afraid that there's an unknown killer among her community.
In this slow burn mystery, Megan Miranda introduces neighbors and their secrets. I think that the first half of this book was a little slower than I normally like and it was information heavy, but I think that it was necessary to set the tone for solving the murders. In the second half I was on the edge of my seat wondering what had happened and if that was what had been meant to happen. I don't want to spoil anything, because I think that going in spoiler-free makes for the best experience in thrillers.
I enjoyed getting to know the community and found their dynamic to be intriguing. I loved the small chats from the community page that were included, they added to the heightened awareness and anxiety of the story.
Such a Quiet Place kept me guessing as to who did it, but I was able to guess who did it. Which I appreciate in thrillers, when there are small threads that make the big reveal feel like a real one.
Thank you to Simon and Schuster for the physical and digital advanced copies in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this one with loveARCtually, a virtual based book club and I loved the discussion we had.
’ve read and loved so many of Megan’s books and I personally think this is one of her best!
The book takes place in a small lake community near a big college. It’s a very tight knit place where people have BBQs and share their lives with each other. Until 1.5 years ago, a couple in the neighborhood were murdered in their sleep and one of the women who lives there, Ruby was convicted. The neighbors are unable to move away and people aren’t as close as they used to be. Ruby’s conviction is turned over and she moves back into the neighborhood much to the displeasure of everyone around them. It begins to be clear that someone else was responsible and people aren’t telling the whole truth.
I also grew up in a small lake community so this book really spoke to me! I loved the neighbors spying on each other in the book, I loved the community message boards in the beginning of each chapter. I loved that Megan used the door cameras to help further plot points and that they even caught a neighbor cheating on his wife with a door camera! I changed who I thought was responsible a few times and after chatting with a few people, I guessed (wrongly) about who it was!
A domestic thriller of the close knit neighborhood genre. Hollows Edge is a small neighborhood where everyone knows everyone else. Now Harpers former roommate is being released from prison after having been convicted of killing two neighbors. Rose returns to Harpers house when her conviction is overturned. Neighbors who were once close become suspicious of not just Rose but each other. Secrets start to come out and when another murder occurs, it seems everyone is a suspect.
Another solid psychological thriller by Miranda - loved the twist that began halfway through and turned it into a compulsive read!
I am a big fan of Megan Miranda, so I was really excited to get my hands on this book! It's a great thriller once it gets going. I found it to be pretty slow-paced in the beginning, but it absolutely picked up steam and became a fast-paced, exciting story in the second half!
Ruby returns to Hollows Edge after spending 14 months in jail. Ruby was found guilty of murder, but now she’s out and everyone is watching her every move. But is she the only one being watched?
This book was kinda slow to start for me, but picked up quickly after the first half. I overall enjoyed this story. This kept me guessing and rethinking everything.
If you are a fan of murder mysteries and/ or neighborhood drama (aren’t we all?). I highly encourage this read!
Megan Miranda has been one of my FAVORITE thriller writers of the past five years. Her books never disappoint, so Such a Quiet Place was at the top of my most anticipated summer releases! I got a chance to buddy read this one after Simon and Schuster sent this ARC my way, and we also got a chance to listen in on a conversation between Megan Miranda and her editor via Zoom.
Premise: Hollow’s Edge is a quick lakeside neighborhood, where neighbors not only live in the same vicinity, many of them also work at the nearby college. They (think) they REALLY know each other. Then, one neighborhood couple ends up dead. Another is charged and convicted in connection. 18 months later, Ruby Fletcher’s conviction is overturned, and she returns to Hollow’s Edge determined to find out who’s actually responsible for the Truett’s deaths.
Her roommate, Harper Nash, doesn’t know who to trust, and the entire neighborhood is still convinced Ruby is to blame. This closed-circle whodunnit is executed with precision and perfection. Blame, suspicion, and doubt are cast around the entire circle of neighbors, and anything seems possible and even plausible. By the time things wrapped, I was both shocked and also not surprised where we ended up. It made me seriously question how far my own neighbors would go to protect their own families.
The back cover promises you’ll be “turning pages late into the night” and it was spot on! I stayed up WAY too late to finish this book, easily binging it in a day. Look for Such a Quiet Place July 13th! Thanks again to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for a review copy of this title!
