Such a Quiet Place is about a murder in a seemingly perfect neighborhood. Megan Miranda is one of my go-to thriller authors and this one did not disappoint!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ruby Fletcher returns to Hollow's Edge after being released from prison 14 months after being convicted of the double murder of 2 neighbors when her conviction is overturned; much to the surprise of her other neighbors. The reason for her return - "to make her neighbors pay" for what they did to her.
I enjoyed the linear nature and pace of the story - it kept me watching all the neighbors for what would happen next.
4.5 stars. I just went back and looked at my goodreads to see if this was a high ratings and having read every adult boom by this author, it seems 4.5 stars is my normal rating for her books. Megan Miranda is a go-to author when it comes to adult thrillers. Not only do her amazingly colorful covers pull me in but I always find myself loving the stories. This one was no different. This little community was so dang creepy. It might seem like a nice place to live on the outside but inside, man they won't think twice to accuse an outsider of horrendous things if it means saving their own asses.
A highly engaging read where you didn't know what was going to happen next. This is my first Megan Miranda read, and it won't be my last. I really enjoyed al the characters in this book. Highly recommended;
I have some mixed feelings about this mystery. First, the characters in this novel are pretty horrible people. Neighbors, friendly looking on the outside (mowing each other's grass, bringing in mail, gathering at the pool, etc), but they are really egocentric and self-serving when the facade is pulled back a bit. it's hard to relate to or really care about any of them. Except maybe the nurse with ageing parents. She seems normal. One of the best bits in this novel is the neighborhood bulletin, board (much like the Neighborhood App). If you know, you know; the author nailed this...and it's hilarious. As a mystery, this really didn't get much traction for me until the final 25% or so. However, it is an easy, enjoyable read, and I'm not upset I spent time on it. Thank you netGalley and publishers or providing a digital ARC for review.
The first half of this book was slow and nothing was really happening. It felt like a chore to pick up the book. Halfway through things started to get twisty but the writing wasn’t there for me on this one.
Not my favorite Megan Miranda. It started off really slow but definitely picked up near the middle until the end of the book!
Such a Quiet Place is Megan Miranda doing what she does so well: crafting characters that are not always entirely what they seem while also being more than what they seem. The lakeside setting and the tiny little neighborhood kingdom full of characters that seem so recognizable hooked me from the beginning. From the get-go, you don''t know who to trust or whose side you're on. The cliquishness of this group of adults is so similar to what we've all seen in our own neighborhoods and towns. Without being preachy about it, Miranda does an excellent job of highlighting the dangers of exclusivity and small-mindedness while telling a really good suspense story. And while there are no heroes, neither are there true, stereotypical villains. Thought-provoking.
If suburbia skews Stepford to you, Megan Miranda’s wild new thriller Such A Quiet Place will only cement your suspicions.
Miranda is the perennially New York Times-bestselling author of the Reese’s Book Club pick The Last House Guest. She doles out enough twists to keep plot-happy readers occupied, while also infusing her cast of characters with deep emotions and conflicted motivations. She weaves humanity into her stories, which always tackle deeper themes than just whodunnit.
Such A Quiet Place is no exception. Hollow’s Edge is an outwardly charming lakeside community full of families, with access to green space and the nearby college, and an active homeowner’s association.
Joining the association also includes an invite to “a private message board, not officially regulated, initially set up with the best of intentions,” Miranda writes of the area’s Nextdoor doppelgänger. “It became a different beast after the deaths of Brandon and Fiona Truett.”
Harper Nash lives on her own in Hollow’s Edge. After her boyfriend left, she’d taken on a roommate, Ruby. As the novel opens, we learn that Ruby’s been in jail for more than a year, convicted of poisoning the Truetts. But the courts have overturned Ruby’s sentence, and she walks into Harper’s house like she still belongs.
Ruby’s reappearance kick-starts this story of a neighborhood that wants to believe it’s close-knit and idyllic. The reality is far more isolating, and often sinister. Harper is a people-pleaser who finds it hard to say no to Ruby, who has a sociopath’s charismatic personality and penchant for mischief. That pits Harper against all of her neighbors, who alternate between shock and disdain at Ruby’s return.
Miranda is intensely interested in the difference between our public and private selves. “We’ve always been great pretenders here,” she writes. Her Hollow’s Edge includes couples who smile on the street and fight in their backyards, teen-age girls who skulk around after dark in the woods and mothers who mask their parenting insecurities with lemonade face-offs.
It’s against this backdrop that Ruby and, eventually, Harper begin digging into the truth of what happened at the Truetts’ house 14 months ago. Home security camera evidence and a zealous neighborhood watch both play large here, as does the collective push towards neighborhood groupthink. By the time everyone gathers at a July 4 picnic, frazzled nerves abound, and more death is on its way.
Such A Quiet Place features classic hallmarks of suspense, including threatening notes, creaking back gates and plenty of misdirection. And the insular nature of Hollow’s Edge recalls Agatha Christie-style country-house mysteries. But these familiar trappings merely gild a story that asks the most essential of questions: Who are we, when no one is looking?

I absolutely loved this book! It was such a captivating read! I couldn’t stop reading! I loved the characters and the story! Highly recommend!
I loved the twists and turns in this read. I was never quite sure who to trust, which made it all the more interesting.
Many of us live in communities that "nothing ever happens".--many of us live in a community like Hollow's Edge. However, this community had a problem--a double murder, a conviction, and then the conviction overturned and the murderess (?) comes back to live there...Add into this mix that most of the people in the neighborhood are connected by the nearby university, dating, friendships, etc. and you have a set up for (spoiler alert) murder. Who did it, why, how, and what will happen--read the book and find out.
An interesting story. Sorry it took me so long to get to it. Just read the author's lastest book which lead me to read her older ones. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
Such a quiet place is a murder mystery wrapped in a study of group dynamics and the actions those bonds can create. The book takes place in Hollows’s Edge, a quiet lake side neighborhood that was a witness to a shocking double murder where Ruby was convicted of the crime. 14 months later Ruby is released as her conviction is overturned and she tries to find the truth of what happened. What follows is a winding mystery into the secrets that people are willing to hide to protect themselves. What starts as a fast paced and exciting mystery quickly devolves into a slog as additional unnecessary plot points are added that do not help the story along. I enjoyed the ending and was surprised by the turn of events. Overall I enjoyed this book 3/5.
This book was very twisty with a very good ending. It did have a bit of a slow start but it did keep my interest and I quickly found myself intrigued and trying to find out who did it and what everyone’s secrets were.
I got this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.I think this more of a mystery than the thriller is catagorized as.This is the second book I have read by this author and I will be reading more by her.It is very slow paced and gradually leads up to the plot.
Ruby Fletcher rocked quiet Hollow's Edge when she was convicted of murdering two of her neighbors. Now, a year and half later, Ruby's conviction has been overturned and she's back in town... much to the chagrin of the residents. Harper Nash, Ruby's roommate, is terrified. No good can come of Ruby being back in town. Suspicions run rampant across the neighborhood. When Harper starts receiving threatening notes, it becomes clear that not everyone was honest about what happened the night of the Truett's murders. Maybe Ruby WAS wrongly convicted and the murder is still among them...
This was a fun, quick read, but it really didn't give what it purported to give. All the right elements were there: small town vibes, drama among neighbors, paranoia regarding a potential unknown killer. But, it wasn't developed enough, some of the twists felt cheap and anti-climatic, and the ending just kind of fizzled out. I feel like there was so much potential here, but the execution wasn't quite right. This was my first Megan Miranda and I'm sad I was so disappointed, because I have so many of her books on my shelf!
In typical Megan Miranda fashion, she weaves together a suspenseful yarn of a story that keeps the reader guessing until the end! I highly recommend this novel if you are looking for a solid mystery.
I
I have read many of Megan Miranda's books over the years. They are always fast-paced and fun reads. Just the right mix of mystery and thrill. I also enjoyed the concept of nosy neighbors who aren't always honest. I felt like this book fell a little flat compared to some of her other novels though. It was still a fun read, but it's not the first that would come to mind if someone asked me which of her books they should start with.
I am confused by the ending. I know Ruby did not commit the murder. Was it an accident or did Harper kill the trusty’s and Ruby?
