I have been a fan of Megan Miranda since "All the Missing Girls" and she remains an extremely impressive thriller writer and longtime followers of her books might be slightly disappointed in this one. It was such a slow burn, which isn't a bad thing as long as it pays off in the end. Unfortunately for me, it didn't pay off. I still enjoyed reading the book, and I read it fairly quickly because I was still always interested in finding out what was gonna happen next. I just didn't get that twisty ending I'm used to from Miranda. The character were rather bland and the actions of the characters just felt fake to me. Not unrealistic, just as if I was constantly realizing that I' reading a book, not immersed into a sneaky, sinister world while reading.
Hollow's Edge is a quiet close knit neighborhood until tragedy strikes. When the Truett's are murdered and Ruby Fletcher is convicted of the crime, the neighborhood is forever changed. A year and a half after going to jail, Ruby returns to the neighborhood and back to being Harper's roommate. Harper cannot believe that Ruby is back and just waltzes back into their lives. If Ruby didn't kill the Truett's then who did and is the neighborhood safe? This was a good thriller with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
So I definitely enjoyed the plot but the execution was off for me. I found myself having to re-read a lot. I think it was a little difficult to follow. I also wonder if maybe the medium I read this on had something to do with it. Sometimes reading it on a kindle makes it a little more difficult.
Megan Miranda always brings the suspense! This book starts in a small community where most everyone even works at the same small college. Then two of their own are found dead. Why were so many people out that night? The journey into the collective consciousness of the neighborhood gets even more involved as the story continues once the accused murderer has been released from prison and returns. I have enjoyed Ms Miranda's adult novels for several years now and this one does not disappoint!
This was my first book I’ve read from this author, and I really enjoyed it! It kept me on my toes about who the killer was. And I was actually shocked when it was revealed! It made you question everyone in the story. It was an amazing thriller!
Thank you to NetGalley for an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I have lived in a Hollow's Edge myself -- a community of academia in which where one works, banks, shops, worships, and resides are all the same place. The Fish Bowl. So, this book provided a strange mixture of apprehension, eagerness, and nostalgic nausea for me.
Having followed Megan Miranda from her debut, I devour each new book. This one, however, I chewed more slowly. I kept wanting to shout, Why doesn't someone just ASK for the truth? I kept asking myself, would I allow someone to live in my home if I had such heavy misgivings? Would I hand over my car keys? When do you draw the line between friendship and gullibility?
A savory read, but not fully satisfying.
I really enjoy Megan Miranda as an author and have loved some of her previous books – this one, however, missed the mark for me. It was fairly slow moving throughout and I didn’t find that the twists at the end made much sense to me. I had a hard time connecting with the characters, although I think the concept of the secrets and interactions in a small neighborhood was an interesting one. Definitely not my favorite of her books, but will look forward to giving her next one a try again!
A quiet neighborhood and a very quiet, slow book. It felt like not much happened in here and it really struggled to keep my interest. It seemed like one of the big twists should have been obvious to investigators at the time and therefore, would have really not made much of a book. This one missed the mark for me.
With Such a Quiet Place, I've come to accept now that Megan Miranda just isn't an author for me. I find her stories to be very predictable and bland.
Megan Miranda does not disappoint. I will say the first half of the book is a bit boring to read but after reading the second I understand why she needed to include so much info in the beginning. From the blurb, I expected a page-turning thriller. The title refers to the peacefulness of the setting, a neighborhood called Hollow’s Edge where the local homeowners’ association maintains a neighborhood watch. Such settings are always ripe for thrillers.
On one hand, Such a Quiet Place does deliver such a thriller. But mostly I found the book sad. The truth behind the murders does hold menace, but the reasons actually turn out to be sadder and more ordinary than I expected. Ruby does endure quite a lot of hostility and seclusion from the neighbors who believe she is guilty and I felt bad for her with how much bullying she had to face.
By the end of the novel, I realized how terrifying the story was. Miranda succeeds in crafting a fantastic thriller, and makes us think about where we live and those around us and what they may be capable of.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for an ARC of Such A Good Place. I highly anticipated this book, as a fan of Miranda's previous books, and it was a compelling read. The story centers around a small lake community where everyone knows everyone (or so they think) - and many of them work together, too. After the suspicious death of two members, the community rallies together to piece together camera footage and determine the culprit. But is that the real culprit?
I kept reading this book in long stretches because I felt the need to know what was going on - and maybe one more chapter would help me know that!
Add this one to your summer list if you're looking for a good who-done-it mystery!
This month, the @lovearctually club read one of my most anticipated summer books, Such a Quiet Place by @meganlmiranda! I’ve read and loved so many of Megan’s books and I personally think this is one of her best!
The book takes place in a small lake community near a big college. It’s a very tight knit place where people have BBQs and share their lives with each other. Until 1.5 years ago, a couple in the neighborhood were murdered in their sleep and one of the women who lives there, Ruby was convicted. The neighbors are unable to move away and people aren’t as close as they used to be. Ruby’s conviction is turned over and she moves back into the neighborhood much to the displeasure of everyone around them. It begins to be clear that someone else was responsible and people aren’t telling the whole truth.
I also grew up in a small lake community so this book really spoke to me! I loved the neighbors spying on each other in the book, I loved the community message boards in the beginning of each chapter. I loved that Megan used the door cameras to help further plot points and that they even caught a neighbor cheating on his wife with a door camera! I changed who I thought was responsible a few times and after chatting with a few people, I guessed (wrongly) about who it was!
Thank you so much to @simonandschuster and Megan for my ARC copy and for the lovely zoom we were able to join with Megan this week! It was so fun to hear more about her inspiration and her next book! Such a Quiet Place comes out Tuesday, July 13 and you can preorder it now. This is one that should be at the top of your summer reading lists!
4.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
I am a big Megan Miranda fan and this was one of my favorites.
To me this was a whodunnit with a twist. I enjoyed that the whole novel was set in a small neighborhood where everyone knows each other. This is a classic case of paranoia and fear causing the demise of the neighborhood. Each neighbor has a piece of the story but everyone is so anxious that they do nothing with the information that they have. Turns out this is the worst thing that could have happened.
Great story, loved the close-knit neighborhood setting, the neighborhood watch and that idea that doing/saying may be the worst thing that you can do.
The beginning was a little slow and had me questioning where the story was headed. About halfway through, it picked up and became more interesting. I didn’t really connect with the narrator, and at first, I though maybe that was done purposefully. However, as it continued, I wish there was more development of the narrator at the beginning.
Such a Quiet Place makes you think about how well you know the people you think you know. There are so many twists and turns that keep you guessing. While the first half of the book is not as engaging, the second half makes up for it.
You think you know your neighbors in a tight knit community, but everyone has secrets. This book takes place in a lovely community where everyone knows everyone and thinks that they know what is really happening. This book shows how a community comes together after a double homicide and puts one of their own behind bars. Ruby get out of prison 14 months after her conviction to return to the place it all started. Then Ruby is found dead from antifreeze poisoning. Now everyone is a suspect. People are getting pictures sent to them. Everyone points their fingers at each other. It’s up to Harper to solve the crime and the mystery behind all the events. Loved this book from start to finish. It kept me guessing who was really out to get Ruby. It makes you realize that you really don’t know your neighbors.
This book is a new type of “closed room” murder mystery for me, taking place in a quiet neighborhood. The storyline was a slow burn and I didn’t find any of the plot twists incredibly shocking. I’ve heard that this isn’t her strongest work, so I’ll have to try one from her backlist soon.
In a close-knit community, nestled outside a college campus, the neighbors regard each other as friends. A fateful night ends with a couple dead. How, why, and who brought tragedy to this quiet place? So begins this frenzied tale, with plenty of suspicious turns. Who tells the truth, who hides from it, and ultimately who pays the price for disrupting the tranquility of “Such a Quiet Place”. Thanks to NetGalley & Simon & Shuster for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Such a Quiet Place is set in one close knit community. Last year, two neighbors are found dead and now, Ruby, who was convicted of their murders, is back in town after her trial is thrown out. The entire community of Hollow's Edge is now taking matters into their own hands and pointing finger. But when some of the neighbors start getting threatening notes that they have the wrong suspect, the neighborhood is turned on its head.
Thrillers always have me on edge from the start. Who’s the narrator? What is going to happen? What clues should I be looking for?
Harper, the narrator, had me anxious and paranoid from the beginning. She wants to believe that Ruby is innocent, but she is unsure what to believe. I liked that even though she is an "insider" of the neighborhood, many times, she is treated as an outsider due to her relationship with Ruby, which makes you question her validity as a narrator.
Ruby was such an interesting character, because she was multi-faceted. carries herself with a carefully curated facade, but there seems to be something off about her. Broken up into single days over a short 1.5 week period, you see Ruby's actions through Harper's POV, which only adds to the mystery of her innocence or guilt.
The thing that I loved most about the book was the neighborhood and their gossip. The inclusion of the Hollow's Edge community page was so fun. Taking place over a 11 days, you see how intertwined all the neighbors are. They not only live on the same street, they also all work for the local school or college, leaving no separation. I was immediately invested in this story because of the characters. I was pretty proud of myself that I guessed the culprit fairly early on in the story.
The pacing would be the only complaint that I had with the book. Around the 30% mark, the pacing is a tad slow, but then ramps up significantly halfway through the book. However, the ending felt a tad rushed and did leave me with some questions of what truly happened and whether or not the murders were resolved.
Overall, it was an entertaining thriller that kept me guessing! It gave me the anxious feeling you're supposed to get when reading thrillers and provided fun twists that threw in red herrings along the way.
Thank you to Simon and Schuster and NetGalley for the advanced copy.
Oh wow this book! Another day, another summer thriller and this one was soapy!
.
I feel like this one is good going in blind but I love a good neighborhood drama. There is something to be said for all bad things happen in the heat when people are mindless and bored.
When neighbors turn in each other and start to put the blame on each other the whiplash of who to believe begins.
.
Fast paced, I couldn’t wait to find out what happened!
