This book has everything I love: a mystery, a murder, an outsider, a cul-de-sac....Megan Miranda knows what to write to get my attention.
Ruby returns to Hollow's Edge after 14 months. 14 months in prison. She's been accused and acquitted in the murder of two members of the Hollow's Edge neighborhood. She shows up at Harper's house - unannounced and by all appearances - with a vengeance.
The entire neighborhood is on alert - Ruby's back and she is ready to confront everyone who went on the stand and said she did it.
Full of tension and neighborhood drama, this is another hit from Megan Miranda.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review.
This book opens up with Ruby returning to her neighborhood, Hollow’s Edge after being released from jail. Ruby was charged with murdering her neighbors, but the charges have now been dropped so she is free. Ruby decides to move back to the neighborhood even though everyone that still lives there wants nothing to do with her. And when she suddenly walks into her home, her roommate, Harper is not thrilled to see her. Harper is still trying to make sense of the night her neighbors were killed and decides that if Ruby intends to stick around, she will do everything she can to figure out what really happened to them.
I have enjoyed Megan Miranda’s books so when I saw this one available on Netgalley, I wanted to read it. I wish I could say I loved it, but it just wasn’t my favorite from her. I think this story had potential in the beginning- some mystery going on with a little bit of suspense building up at the halfway mark, but then the ending just fell flat and felt underwhelming. The decisions made by the characters didn’t make sense to me and I just didn’t like anyone in the story.
I will definitely pick up another book from this author in the future because I know she can deliver. Thank you Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for this advance reading copy. Such A Quiet Place will be available 7/13/21.
A lovely neighborhood full of wonderful people who all get along and help each other. We all know that's never really true. This story exposes the lies we tell ourselves to feel good about our lives and shows the lengths people will go to to protect the ones they love.
"Such a Quiet Place" is like "Big Little Lies" but with more big little lies. While it starts out a little slow, the story quickly picks up speed and you'll be unable to put it down. You'll suspect every character at least once. Fantastic job by Megan Miranda!
When the Truetts were murdered, the small community of Hollow's Edge was left reeling. Even worse, one of their own, Ruby Fletcher, is convicted in their deaths. The residents are even more shocked when Ruby's conviction is overturned after a little more than a year, and Ruby is released from jail and returns right back to Hollow's Edge and back into Harper Nash's home. Harper, Ruby's former roommate, doesn't know how to deal with Ruby's reappearance. Ruby has always insisted that she was innocent. Is she back to prove what really happened? Or does she want revenge...?
I am a Megan Miranda fanatic - I will read (and love) anything that she writes. Once I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. I believed Ruby was innocent, despite the evidence against her, and I had to know her reasons for and plan upon returning to Hollow's Edge. I liked the little messages from the community page interspersed throughout the book (I'm a sucker for books that incorporate social media, podcasts, etc) as they felt like a fun little touch. The ending didn't feel like your typical thriller twist, which I really liked. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it for thriller fans. Megan Miranda, keep the books coming, please :)
This is one of the best books of the year and most suspenseful, edge of your seat thrillers I've read in a while. I read almost the entire thing in one day, and carried it around with me while I did other things. Even from the beginning it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, before any of the "action" even started, because of how wonderful the hold-your-breath atmosphere was set up. Megan Miranda's talent for weaving together a story that has you completely hooked and then ripping the rug from under you MULTIPLE times is truly fantastic. This was masterful suspense to the point where I was jumping at noises in my own house; and I read a lot of thrillers and this doesn't usually happen. I was honestly emotionally exhausted by the end it put me through the ringer. I don't want to say anything else about the plot because it's just pieced together so well and I don't want even the tiniest spoiler. If you love books that keep you guessing, have you mistrusting absolutely everyone and even everything you are reading, this is the book for you!
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Such A Quiet Place.
Megan Miranda is really the best mystery/thriller writer around today. Such a Quiet Place takes an idyllic setting and shows how the perception of a place and of people isn't always correct. There are so many twists and turns that I never saw coming, but when everything clicks into place it all makes sense. Like all of Megan Miranda's books, I cannot stop thinking about the ending of the novel and in this case especially the last lines. Not only was this an edge-of-your-seat read that kept me up until 2:30 in the morning, but it left me contemplating a deeper message about people and how we relate to each other. If you like mysteries and thrillers, definitely check it out when it is published in July 2021!
Thank you to Simon and Schuster, Megan Miranda, and Netgalley for the e-ARC of Such a Quiet Place!
Harper Nash is surprised when Ruby Fletcher’s murder conviction is overturned and thrown out. But she’s absolutely shocked when Ruby shows up at Harper’s house the next day as if the murders of their next-door neighbors, the Truetts, and the last 14 months never happened. Especially since the neighborhood all testified against Ruby. What does Ruby want? Revenge on their neighbors? Revenge on Harper? Or is it possible that Ruby didn’t actually kill the Truetts and she’s here to find out who the real killer is?
Megan Miranda nails it again with her newest domestic thriller! I flew through this one because I just had to know what on earth was going on in Hollow’s Edge. I love how the twists and whys in her books are logical and she doesn’t ask the reader to make any crazy jumps. Also none of that alcoholic/unreliable narrator nonsense here! Instead we have a protagonist who could be your best friend, desperately trying to figure out what happened in her neighborhood.
Such A Quiet Place is out July 13!

The neighborhood of Hollow’s Edge and their group message board reminded me a bit of where I live. I too belong to a community watch group who reports on all the happenings around the city. This part was relatable for me. The MURDER was a whole different ball game though.
In Such a Quiet Place a young woman named Ruby is accused of killing her neighbors. Later, she is released and deemed innocent, but the majority of her community still believe she’s guilty. Since the murder, it’s been hard to sell homes in the area and the community feels trapped by the crime and resentful.
This book was not scary for me, but could be a solid psychological thriller for someone new to this genre who wants to try it out and test the waters. The herd mentality and spying aspect were creepy, but not enough to actually give me thrills. For an avid thriller reader I think this story will feel underwhelming.
I love reading stories about neighborhoods where everyone knows everyone’s business. I felt the paranoia and was on EDGE most of the time wondering who was going to pop out and do something…ANYTHING… But it was a slow burn with not a great payoff. It could have been a GREAT story but it was just good. I felt like I read a watered down version of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street (without the aliens). Solid read if you like slow and simple lock-box thrillers.
Plot: What happens to a close knit community when everyone might be guilty of murder? This one was a quick read and definately kept me guessing the whole time. Everyone had a motive and everyone is suspicious. Super surprise ending. Highly recommended.
Ugh. This author is hit or miss for me and unfortunately, this was a miss!
I enjoyed the first half of the book but by the end I was ready to throw my book. The conclusion was just so…anticlimactic. I was invested and it just fizzled out. The characters were insufferable and I did not like a single one. That could have possibly saved the book for me but alas, this one wasn’t meant to be. My thanks to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.
*I did not read Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda through an educator lens.
I really appreciate Megan Miranda's book. However, Such a Quiet Place, was not one of my favorites of hers. The characters were hard to connect with and things just fell flat in the book. The plot did not grab me and it was easy to see who had been a part of Ruby's murder, while other story lines with characters didn't get enough attention or were mentioned and then barely touched on.
How well do we actually know someone?
They can be our neighbor, someone we talk to every day, someone we see frequently - we've been inside their home and they've been inside ours, but in the end someone has the ability to choose how much they want to reveal about themselves, right?
The beginning of this book really starts a slow burn. It is all about setting the scene for what is going to happen..
We meet all these neighbors that are, quite frankly, a bit too nosey. They belong to a neighborhood watch, they have a message board to communicate, and they all have security cameras outside their homes to catch what everyone else is doing.
They are obsessed with each other's lives, but they spend all their time talking ABOUT each other instead of talking TO each other.
When we reach the 4th of July party is when the pacing of the book really picks up. Character's layers begin to get peeled back, the powerful personalities begin to show their faults and the balance of power begins to shift.
I found the plot twists to be intriguing enough to keep me on the edge of my seat. (I ended up reading the last 2/3 of the book in one sitting to be completely honest)
The twists and reveals were well written and executed perfectly.
By the end, I really felt for the character that was painted out to be a villain all along.
I think ultimately this book shows human nature's dirty side and the lengths people will go to to maintain a nice image. In Hollow's Edge, you either fit in or you don't. There's no gray area.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
This thriller is out next month. I love it! I love a good mystery/ thriller. Sometimes they are so boring and I can guess the whole story and I feel like I have read or seen the same thing over and over. This one feels different and refreshing. I could NOT figure it out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Put it on your list
I love Megan Miranda books, so when I had the opportunity to read this early, I was stoked.
Sadly, this missed the mark for me. It started off with great potential but it was such a slow burn book that I could not stay concentrated on reading it for more than 30 minutes. This story did perk up a little throughout the book, but again just fell flat.
I am just so excited to be able to read another Megan Miranda novel!!! This one was another excellent thriller and kept me guessing until the very end… amazing writing and the characters are fantastic!!!
This book follows a tight knit community where people are woven into each other’s lives due to close proximity and working together as well. When one couple is murdered, all eyes turn to Ruby Fletcher but she wasn’t convicted and now she’s returned to the community. But why? And her suspicious behavior leads us to believe she is guilty.
I have liked a lot of the author’s books in the past but this one was a miss for me. It felt slow and repetitive. There was pages of pages where seemingly nothing happened. It took 60% of the book for it to catch my interest at all. I wanted to like it but it wasn’t for me. 2.5 stars
The book kept me awake until I finished reading. I didn’t see the twists coming. A couple pieces of the mystery were not as polished, but overall a great read.
** Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. **
If I could give this book more than five stars, I definitely would. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will not want to put the book down. So much drama and secrets in this little community. This book will have you thinking all different things throughout the book and will leave you with a shocking ending.
