Thank you for the opportunity to read this arc. Unfortunately, unlike the author’s other books, this one did not capture me. The first half dragged entirely, and when it finally came to the action, the outcome felt rushed and not worth the time spent reading it.
I enjoyed this book. The story of a terrible tragedy that changed a once quiet and idyllic neighborhood, this book does a wonderful job of creating an aura of suspense and oppressive paranoia. A year and a half ago, two residents of Hollow's Edge were found dead, and a neighbor, Ruby, was found guilty of the crime. But her conviction was overturned, and how she has returned and surprised her former roommate, Harper. Why is Ruby back? Was she truly guilty? Is Harper in danger? And if Ruby wasn't responsible, which resident of this seemingly tight-knit community could be a murderer? What secrets are these neighbors hiding?
This setting of this book reminded me of To Tell You the Truth, The Therapist, and even Those People. What seems on the surface to be the perfect neighborhood has actually turned out to be a prison-like enclave full of suspicion and tension. Can anyone really be trusted? Who is peeking through their blinds in the middle of the night, or tiptoeing around the security cameras in the dark?
This was a great slow-burn who-done-it. The author used the secluded neighborhood, the isolated and forested lake-side setting, and the heavy summer heat to really evoke a sense of high suspense. It was very well-done. Harper doesn't always make the smartest decisions, and sometimes I wanted to yell at her to so something different, but it did not take away from y enjoyment of the book.
I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good suspenseful mystery and wants something to read on a summer vacation!
Hooked from the start! The characters were intriguing, the story line involved. Megan Miranda is never a let down! I'd recommend to a friend.
2.5 rounded to 3.
Hollow's Edge used to be the hot spot to have a home. A quiet and peaceful neighborhood to live. It was a place where the neighbors looked out for each other, had parties and other celebrations. Until Brandon and Fiona Truett were murdered in their home in the middle of the night. Now the residents feel trapped, unable to sell their homes due to that history. Many of the residents gave testimony against the suspected killer, Ruby Fletcher who ended up being found guilty of the crime. When Ruby's conviction is overturned about 18 months later she decides to go back to Hollow's Edge. Is she there to cause havoc or is she looking for answers?
Unfortunately, this book was not for me. I struggled to be pulled into the story and thought it had so many characters that I didn't really connect to any of them. I felt like it took until about 65% for me to be invested and that was short lived. I also had a hard time keeping track of them. The overall story just felt thrown together. I did like how Megan Miranda included the neighborhood message board into the mix because in this day and age almost every neighborhood has one of those. They tend to cause more trouble so that part was relatable. I would say that this author is a hit or miss for me and this story falls in line with her others novels. So if you are a fan of this author you will probably like it.
Hollow’s Edge is a great neighborhood with many upsides such as a pool and tight knit community until one of It’s least liked couples is murdered. Every resident is under suspicion and one of them is sent away to prison, Ruby. Which was based on camera footage that one of residents had.
After a year Ruby is released and she’s back at Hollow’s Edge. Everyone is scared and suspicious of her in the neighborhood. Told in her roommate Harper's pov throughout. Was Ruby the real murderer or did someone make it look that way.
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
I was able to read this book thanks to Netgalley for letting me read this book. It's not the first book by Megan Miranda but it was the first that in my honest opinion wasn't great.
Over half of the book is so slow..... then once the book starts getting good, it's over.
The story is about a murder in a community, who united to make sure one person paid. But was it the right person.
But with the slow pace of the book, I didn't want to keep reading but I did.
This was one of the most upsetting Megan Miranda books by far.
It is her classic, who-dunnit books which I love of course. The characters were just very dull to me without too much of a development. Semi satisfying ending, won't be the first Miranda book I'd recommend to a friend.
A double murder in a quiet, idyllic neighborhood forces neighbors to turn on one of their own only to have the conviction overturned and the wrongfully accused return to the cul-de-sac bent on revenge. This was a quick and enjoyable tale woven amongst some interesting (and flawed) personalities.
If you enjoyed “Big Little Lies” or “Little Fires Everywhere”, you will probably like this as well.
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Publishing for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.
Of all the recent thrillers, this one definitely stood out for me. I couldn't wait to finish this one right away. The neighborhood, Hollow’s edge is one of the model neighborhoods with all neighbors getting together constantly, celebrating each other's lives, making their community a better place. However, everything changes with double homicide in the community and things get crazy when one of the residents, Ruby is convicted for the murders. But after an year, Ruby is back as Harper’s tenant and the whole community is literally seething in anger.
Ruby is not simply back to move on but is here to take her revenge for her wrongful conviction. Is she really not guilty? Is there something that the neighborhood is hiding or burying their secrets? Once I started reading it, I was so eager to know who the killer is and how the murders occurred in the first place? Add another murder into the mix, things get even crazier with all the residents worried about their buried secrets coming out now. The final twist at the end absolutely came out of nowhere and was an interesting end to the whole investigation.
An intriguing, page turner with a very interesting climax you don’t want to miss out!
I have read almost all of Megan Miranda's novels and each one is better than the last.
I couldn't put it down.
The setting is a small neighborhood called Hollow's Edge where many of the residents also work at a local college on the other side of the lake. It's the dream neighborhood where everyone attends BBQs and helps one another out but mysteriously the Truetts' have been murdered.
14 months have passed, Ruby has been acquitted for murder on a technicality and shows back up at Harper's door with nothing. She acts like she wasn't just released from jail and everything is perfectly fine. Things start not adding up for Harper. She feels like she is unable to trust anyone including Ruby. Ruby disappeared for two days for a meeting with her lawyer but something still doesn't feel right to Harper. Ruby has hidden things in her room, for example, a knife and a bunch of cash. Things are also being left out by the neighbors, not only during the investigation but even before the murders. Harper is trying to piece everything together before she's next and find who is the real murderer.
The best thing about Miranda's novels is I'm always guessing until the end. This one does not disappoint.

"Such a Quiet Place" by Megan Miranda was a fast-paced, "not what you think" novel. Although I am not a huge fan of psychological thrillers *insert anxiety and locking my front door*, this novel kept me enthralled in the drama and the mystery. For someone else it may have been easy to put the pieces of this puzzle together, but for me, I only realized the truth as it was unfolding as Miranda intended.
At the beginning of the novel I felt like Hollow's Edge, the private and idyllic neighborhood, was a place that I could see myself settling down and raising a family as a resident... by the end of the novel I saw that same self selling the house no matter the market!
There were times throughout the novel that the pace was a little slow and a few characters that didn't quite meet the mark, but overall the plot outweighed the cons.
Book review!!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
I am so excited that I was chosen to be able to review the latest book by Megan Miranda. I have read and enjoyed her other books and being able to read this one as well felt like such an honor.
Such A Quiet Place was a very quick read despite being not that short. It revolves around the story of Harper, who lives in a neighborhood in which her roommate had been accused of murdering their next door neighbor. However, her roommate was then acquitted, and has now returned.
The story is an edge of your seat ride trying to find out if Ruby, the roommate, actually did it and WHY has she returned?
I felt the pull to read this at random parts of the day. The relationships seemed very well established and written and it felt as though I knew the people in the story and could envision the location and the university at which all of the characters were employed.
I had to throw in an energy drink because I stayed up half the night finishing this book last night in order to find out the resolution of this story, and I was not disappointed in any way.
Highly recommend to anyone who wants to read something that will engage you, and not let you go.
A twisty-turny mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. Hollow’s Edge is an idyllic lakefront community where nothing much ever happens. A year and a half ago a couple was murdered, and a young woman who lives in the community was convicted based on testimony of her neighbors. When her conviction is overturned and Ruby returns to Hollow's Edge the suspense starts to build. If Ruby didn't do it, who did?
You can't settle on the truth until you've seen it from all sides.
Funny how that truth thing works. It's the he said, she said, and they said mechanics of it all. And then it filters through your own eyes and ears and emotions........
Hollow's Edge is a quiet community clustered near a small Virginia college. A majority of the residents all seem to be employed at this college as faculty, counselors, staff, or security. Professional lives seem to mingle after hours with private lives. A snug little existence until it no longer was.
Tragedy struck within the Truett home when Brandon and his wife, Fiona, were found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. After a police investigation and eye witness reports, Ruby Fletcher was arrested for murder. Ruby used to walk the Truett's dog and had access to their house. Video also placed Ruby at the scene. Done deal? Not so fast.
After fourteen months in prison, Ruby is set free when the verdict is thrown out because of tainted information. But ol' Ruby shows up at Harper's house where she was Harper's roommate prior to the incident. A bad penny on her doorstep, Harper takes her in when no one else will. The grumblings and side glances begin in the community. Pressure builds on Harper to get rid of Ruby. Maybe someone is one step ahead of her.
If you've ever read Megan Miranda before, you know that she is a master of suspense and a wizard with characters. Such A Quiet Place sets a panoramic view of a close-knit group of neighbors who go well beyond the usual Neighborhood Watch scenario. You either belong or you absolutely don't. There are no in-betweens.
As the story unfolds, Megan Miranda sits us in close proximity to these multi-layered characters who all seem to have pointed quirks that you can't help but notice. There's some bad business brewing behind closed doors and, as readers, we begin to eyeball these people in a different light. Miranda will see to it. She's that good at shuffling the cards of human nature with face cards up for viewing. Buckle up. It won't just be crickets chirping in Such A Quiet Place. Guaranteed.
I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Simon & Schuster and to the talented Megan Miranda for the opportunity.
I’m a big fan of Megan Miranda’s, she knows how to set up a great thriller with plenty of twists that will keep you guessing until the very end. This one’s another winner (though maybe not my absolute favorite of hers).
In the development of Hollow’s Edge on Lake Hollow, everyone knows everyone and is intertwined, working at the nearby Lake Hollow College or at one of the local schools, and partying together during holidays and life’s milestones. All of that was disrupted a year and a half ago when a couple on one of the cul-de-sacs is found dead, and Harper Nash’s roommate, Ruby, was convicted of the murders. But when her conviction is overturned, Ruby decides to return to Hollow’s Edge and upends the unsteady peace the neighborhood finally found. And any secrets the residents were hiding are bound to come to light.
This is a classic “how well can you REALLY trust your neighbors” story, with the answer being, basically, not at all, lol. Everyone has their own agenda and their own secrets and this strange situation really beings all of the anxieties, fears, and, yes, secrets, to light. I loved it, because it gave a real soap opera-y vibe that was just delicious.
It’s also a book where you don’t know who to “root” for, because everyone’s kind of shady. Even Harper, the main character has her flaws, sometimes I just wanted her to stand up for herself and tell someone off!
There’s plenty of twists and turns that just keep you on your toes, and I was not sure how things were going to play out at all. When the ending finally came, I did not see it coming. I mea, at that point, I didn’t even really have any theories, because there were enough twists and avenues to explore, things could’ve gone in any direction! But I love how it turned out and I think Miranda does a great job of really packing a punch in her endings. She doesn’t mess around.
This is another great addition to her bibliography and it’s a great psychological thriller that will have you questioning the people I your own neighborhood. It’s definitely worth a read!
initial thoughts: while I wanted to love this one - Megan Miranda’s books are always “must reads” for me - this one was just okay for me.
the beginning of the book was a bit slow, and the introduction of quite a few bland characters from the neighborhood, made it slow going for the first five or six chapters.
After reading an ARC of Megan Miranda's newest thriller, there is a saying that's been stuck in my head; "as safe as houses". I read it in a book and it stuck with me and the subject matter of this novel has brought it back to the forefront of my mind. After all houses are only as safe as the people that are inside of them. Harper thinks she knows her neighbors. Their tight knit college community was rocked by the murders of two of their own, by one of their own, 14 months earlier, but they united to solve the case and are starting to move forward. That is until the conviction is overturned and the accused comes back to take up residence inside Harper's home. As the community gets shook up Harper starts to question how well she really knows her neighbors? What are they all capable of? And did they get it wrong the first time? Take a deep dive into suburbia with this shaken up version of the American dream hitting shelves this summer!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ FOUR STARS for me! Thank you @netgalley @simonandschuster and @meganlmiranda for the opportunity to read this hot summer thriller before its release date on July 13, 2021.
This was a thriller unlike any I’ve ever read before, and I loved it! There are sooo many secrets in this neighborhood that will eventually be revealed. The answers may blow you away!!! Can’t wait to read more from the author!
You have to love Megan Miranda! She knows how to pull you in and keep you guessing while on the edge of your seat.
Hollow's Edge is the perfect community. Pretty homes, lovely families, amazing community, close to a lake, woods and the local college. But that perfection is shattered when The Truett's are found dead in their home. How could this happen and who could have infiltrated Hollow's Edge, making everyone second guess their neighbors' intentions and whereabouts?
Ruby on everyone's security cameras the night of the Truitts' demise. Evidence begins to surface and Ruby is convicted of the Truitt's murder. Fast forward a year and a half, Ruby's conviction is overturned and she is back. And no one is happy. Threats start showing up as notes, strange happenings begin happening again. Is Ruby to blame or is this pure coincidence?
If you haven't read and experienced Megan Miranda, Such a Quiet Place should be your first! Writing is easy to follow and you'll devour this book without even realizing it. I will be recommending this book to to others and will always be on the outlook for work by Megan Miranda. Special thanks to NetGalley, Megan Miranda, and Simon & Schuster Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. 5 stars
Ruby Fletcher was convicted of a double murder in a quiet, isolated neighborhood where neighbors all know each other's business. Fourteen months later her conviction is overturned on a technicality and she returns to the neighborhood still maintaining her innocence and determined to find out the truth and possibly get payback. Several twists and a fast-paced narrative will keep readers hooked.
