It's never really summer for me until I have a Megan Miranda thriller in my hands and Such a Quiet Place did not disappoint. I love the behind the scenes seedy stories of idyllic places and Hollow's Edge has a few! Everyone is a suspect in this neighborhood and I had a great time trying to figure it out. This one was just what I needed to start my summer reading off on the right foot.
3.5 Rounded up for the ending!
A great premise and tense atmosphere made this one fun. I loved the suburban fish tank that drove this story. There is a relatively large cast of characters, most unremarkable. Ruby is quite interesting though and Harper is a big pushover (but let’s face it, in a very awkward situation).
This has a a ton of reviews (and you can’t say too much without giving things away) so I’ll wrap it up. If you like this author then you definitely won’t be disappointed.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Simon & Schuster for a copy in exchange for a review.
In this book, it's both likely and unlikely you will be surprised. There's misdirection and also like, direction? These Megan Miranda books are really always fantastic reads. There's a great market for these books and we will probably order this one at our library.
Megan Miranda has a winner with Such a Quiet Place. There are so many twists and turns as Ruby and Harper try to survive amidst the post prison time and conviction of murder by Ruby. As the neighborhood is on high alert with Ruby's return and secrets of their own, the suspense mounts. This one will keep you guessing until the very end and then sorry to know what really happened.
So we have Hollows Edge which used to be a quiet place where neighbors dropped in on neighbors, celebrated graduations, birthdays and holiday parties until the murder of Brandon and Fiona Truett. A year and half later the residents of Hollows Edge are trapped unable to sell their homes and move because of the murder and the reality that they all testified against one of their own Ruby Fletcher who is now out of jail on a technicality and has now come back. She is back in the home she shared with roommate Harper Nash and not everyone is suspicious and watching each other’s back while they are trying to figure out why Ruby is back here. Meanwhile Harper starts receiving threating notes and she realizes she has to uncover what actually happened that night and find out the truth even if it means Ruby is innocent. This was a really good read and really interesting take on what happens when you think you know what happened and make the evidence fit what you think happened and not what actually happened. I really enjoy her writing style and I really loved how everything came together and I had no clue which I always enjoy finding out with everyone else.
Thanks to Simon & Schuster and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
Such A Quiet Place by Megan Miranda made me think about neighbors. What do they see, hear and assume about the people they share a street with? It's thought provoking and suspenseful.
This was the first adult thriller by Megan Miranda that I've read, and I'm definitely interested in reading more by her. She created the perfect, slowly-building, suspenseful atmosphere that I expected and wanted. I loved the descriptions of the neighborhood and reading about the dynamics between all the neighbors. My only complaint would be that I found Harper herself as a character a little lackluster. I didn't find anything about her backstory super compelling, but the story was carried fine by her narration and I still got what I hoped for from this book.
Actual rating: 3.5 stars
I really liked this overall! It's more of a quiet, almost relaxed thriller. It's still very engaging, but it's very focused on this particular community and these day to day details. I didn't guess the overall reveal, and I really enjoy what she did with this! It was fun to try to figure out if Ruby did indeed kill the neighbors and what secrets everyone is hiding.
This setting in this neighborhood community was really nice. Everything basically takes place in this one area and the characters are pretty much just these neighbors. It almost has a locked room type of vibe with this, so I enjoyed this! It's certainly interesting to think about what secrets people keep and how well you truly know your neighbors.
I really liked Harper overall! She seems nice, though she is a bit naive. I felt bad for her at times because she does feel like an outsider in this community, and people do manipulate her sometimes. Ruby is an interesting character - she's definitely not the most likeable. She has some flaws certainly, but she can actually be a decent friend at times to Harper.
I had a fun time with this book and will read more from Megan Miranda! I'd recommend this to people looking for a thriller that's less action packed/more of a character study.

When a couple is murdered in a sleepy neighborhood, Ruby Fletcher is charged with their murder. A year and a half later, Ruby's conviction has been overturned and she moves right back into the neighborhood. The only thing that is obvious is that Ruby's motives for coming back are not innocent.
A very fun, quick read. This book definitely had you guessing the entire time. With a few big twists, this page turner is definitely worth a read!
Megan Miranda does not disappoint! This is the perfect summer vacation read. A page-turning domestic thriller, full of twists and turns. It will keep you guessing until the very end.
I have read every book this author has written so when I got approved to read this early it made me so happy. Once again she delivers. This was so good, definitely a 5 star read for me. I’m so excited to see what she does next! 🙌🏻
Ruby has returned to the scene of the crime. Her conviction has been overturned.
I loved the private and idyllic neighborhood setting. This is a close community that feels safe until Ruby shows up unexpectedly. The neighbors get together and like a team, they form a cohesiveness and pledge to not let Ruby upset the apple cart. No one wants to be her next victim!
I could feel the tension and turned the pages quickly. The slow unraveling of secrets, the trails left behind, all led to an unpredictable, well paced mystery with a few dark secrets lurking in some closets.
Overall, a nice mystery suspense read to while away the hours.
The narrator, Harper, moves into the Hollow's Edge Community because of the quiet friendly suburban neighborhood. The amenities include a lake, a communal pool, fenced in yards and celebrations with the neighbors, as well as a neighborhood watch program. After her boyfriend leaves her, she moves in a roommate Ruby. You can find out all of this from the Hollow Edge Community Page....but what you should fear in this community is what you can't see.
"We became the very thing we feared."
"We were good people with bad intentions or bad people with good intentions."
14 months ago two of their own, the Truitt's, were found dead in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning. Ruby was charged and convicted of the crime and sentenced to 20 years in prison. She maintains her innocence and her conviction is overturned. Unexpectedly and unwanted, she waltzes back into Harper's house nonchalantly..... she's back to the scene of the crime she was convicted in view of the darkened empty home of the Truitt's.
An old cliche can be proven in this unsettling mystery "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer". The implications everyone made while advocating to protect their community, she vows to seek revenge and find out who is lying.
The community page comes alive with posts what to do now that a convicted killer is back in town. Then the posts are deleted but not before revealing passive aggression, hidden secrets and some obvious one-upping each other, but underneath they are fearful and ashamed of what might be exposed. Who is lying? Why is Harper receiving threatening notes?
You do not want to miss this riveting mystery novel from Megan Miranda. I could not wait to find out the truth behind a web of lies, but getting to it is well worth the ride unlike any other. The description and interception of the characters becomes a trail of whodunit questions and illusions of what we classify as a good neighbor. Open your eyes....
Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for this unforgettable, well-written ARC in exchange for my review.
5 kept me guessing stars
Hollow’s Edge is a lovely neighborhood with a lake, community pool, and many residents work at the nearby college. It’s lovely until one of the least liked couples is murdered. Suspicion is turned on every resident and one of them (Ruby) is sent away to prison, based on camera footage from some of the residents.
A little over a year later, Ruby is released on a technicality and she’s back at Hollow’s Edge. Fear and suspicions are running high throughout the neighborhood. We see everything through Harper, she works at the college in admissions and Ruby was living with her when she was arrested.
Even though Harper and Ruby were friends then, it’s hard to tell how things are stand between them now. Is Ruby really guilty of the murder or was she framed? Harper is torn between wanting Ruby to get out of her house and reconnecting with her friend. Threatening notes start turning up and a neighborhood Fourth of July party ends with tragic fireworks.
This suspenseful book kept me guessing and I suspected everyone! I would characterize this more as a mystery and the ultimate reveals were a surprise to me. This was my first read from Megan Miranda, but I’m definitely interested in reading her other books now!
I love megan miranda so much. I was so excited to be selected to read this. Hands down one of the best books I have read this year. I am floored, rendered speechless. I totally underestimated just how much I would love this book. Yes, it was that good. Thank you so much
I've only read one book by Megan Miranda before, The Last Guest, and I quite enjoyed it. As a result, I was ecstatic to get the chance to read an advance copy of her latest book!
I'll get straight to the point.
Here's what I enjoyed about the book:
- Fast-paced, I love me a good fast-paced mystery/thriller
- Intriguing storyline; the book had me captured from the start in a way that made me want to continue to read. I basically read this book in two sitting (would have been one of the daily happenings of life didn't get in the way).
- unreliable protagonist; love me a protagonist I'm not sure I can trust!
- Other unreliable characters; this kind of character-driven plot lets you continuously wonder where you'll end up and whodunnit?
Without giving too much away, here is what I didn't enjoy as much:
- the climax, for me, it wasn't enough; that's all I'll say
- some of the "b" storylines -- the smaller reveals were a disappointment
I expected to be really blown away by the reveals, ending, etc. but I wasn't. It fell short for me and I know part of that is because I read SO many thrillers that it now takes a LOT for me to be "wow-ed" by any of them.
I gave it a 3-star because while it is enjoyable to read, it wasn't enough for me to love it which would've rendered a 4-star.
But, if you enjoy thrillers and aren't super picky like me, then you should be able to enjoy this one.
I will start out this review by saying I love Megan Miranda and have enjoyed all of her previous books, however this one was not my favorite.
Such a Quiet Place is a character study of the residents in a tight knit community, Hollow’s Edge. After two residents, Brandon and Fiona are found dead in their house due to carbon monoxide poisoning, the police suspect foul play. The other residents are scared and horrified that one of their own could have possible killed Brandon and Fiona. The residents compare notes via an online message board, and they come to the conclusion that the murderer is Ruby Fletcher. Ruby is sent to prison but after 14 months, her conviction is overturned and she returns to Hollow’s Edge. The residents are angry about her return because they wholeheartedly believe Ruby is behind the murders but if that is the case, why does Ruby turn up dead a few days later?
Did the neighborhood’s little white lies and omissions convict an innocent person and is the killer hidden in plain sight?
Summer Beach Read of 2021!!
I love Megan Miranda novels...this might be in my top 3! I loved the location concept of the story, I loved the Hollow’s Edge location, and I loved the summer break timeline! The story had a lot of twist and turns and definitely had me constantly trying to figure who was telling the truth and who was keeping the biggest secrets! I definitely recommend this summer read!
Megan Miranda does it again! A wonderful, twist thriller that leaves you guessing until the very end.
Another simmering suspense novel from Miranda.
