"Hollow’s Edge used to be a quiet place. A private and idyllic neighborhood where neighbors dropped in on neighbors, celebrated graduation and holiday parties together, and looked out for one another. But then came the murder of Brandon and Fiona Truett. A year and a half later, Hollow’s Edge is simmering. The residents are trapped, unable to sell their homes, confronted daily by the empty Truett house, and suffocated by their trial testimonies that implicated one of their own. Ruby Fletcher. And now, Ruby’s back."
3.5 stars. Again, I was looking forward to reading Megan Miranda's new book that comes out this summer, and I was lucky enough to get an egalley to read. I definitely enjoyed this book of hers more than her last 2 books. I loved her book "All the Missing Girls", but none of her other books compared to that one. This one was interesting and kept me engaged. I read it in 2 days. It was a good read, I liked the twist at the ending, but when I finished I realized a few plot holes. Hence the rating. I would recommend and think any reader would enjoy this book.
Thank you Netgalley and Simon and Schuster for the egalley!
Said in my best Jack Nicholson voice...”I’m baaaack!”
With her conviction overturned on a technicality, Ruby removes her shoes and lets herself in to the house she had been sharing with her friend, Harper, startling her as she was preparing a meal. The knife clatters to the floor! 🔪
Nobody expected Ruby to return to Hollow’s Edge.
Nobody thought she would expect to move back into the house next door to the “crime scene”-the one where the murdered bodies of Brandon and Fiona Truett had been found- the crime SHE was convicted of 14 months prior.
There was no time to prepare.
An alert is quickly sent out on the “Hollow’s Edge Community Page” (which opens each chapter)
And, just as quickly deleted.
Because the neighbors have learned how to work together and cover evidence-the truth is not always told.
And, Ruby, who claims she is innocent-wants to make sure that someone is going to pay...
I have to admit...I have read only one other book by Megan Miranda-“All the Missing Girls” and I was not “wowed” by it. I never requested another until the book description of this one intrigued me, and I read a couple of positive early reviews…
I am SO glad that I decided to give the author a second chance!
I was RIVETED to this neighborhood mystery from page one!
I loved the the glimpses into the lives occurring behind the white picket fences of the backyards in Hollow’s Edge, and the vivid descriptions of the things we all take for granted like sunning by the pool, and July 4th barbecues and fireworks!
I could NOT put this one down!
I had to find out if Ruby was guilty or innocent!
Now I know-and my only remaining question is-how will I find the time to fit in all of her published books that I have missed?
Thank You to Simon & Schuster for my gifted copy provided through NetGalley!
It was my pleasure to provide a candid review!
Available July 13, 2021!
I am a fan of Miranda's books because I find them to be packed with smart details and lots of twists. The first half of this book had a lot of promise. I was quite intrigued to see what would happen knowing what Miranda's books are typically like. Unfortunately I found the last 40ish% to be quite slow. I expected some more wild twists or juicy info to come out. I enjoyed reading about Ruby and Harper but I found the other neighbors lacking in much of a story that made me care about them a lot. I wanted to hear more about them. I would continue to read Miranda's books bc I have truly loved some of her others, this one was just not for me.
Hollows Edge is a close, tight-knit community, so it is shocking when the neighborhood is rocked by a double-homicide. But they all decide that there’s only one suspect: Ruby. And she must be guilty. During the investigation, they all point the cops in her direction, except for Harper, Ruby’s former roommate. So it only makes sense that when Ruby’s conviction is overturned, that she goes back to stay with Harper. Harper is terrified- and rightfully so. Ruby has come back with a mission in mind: find out who exactly killed Fiona and Brandon. During her investigation, another shocking death rocks the community, and now no one is sure if they are safe.
Equal parts domestic and thrilling, this book will not leave fans of Miranda disappointed.
I have lived in the same apartment in NYC doe the last 12 years. I do not know my neighbors names, what they do for a living, or who they are as people....and I like it that way. The ideas of neighborhood watch patrols or a community gossip board make me nervous, all those people watching you an talking about you. Ruby spend 14 months in jail until it was proven her case was tampered with but by whom? Now she is back and everyone wants answers....or do they!? Those answers may turn up some unpleasant truths about the lies they have told themselves and each other! Another great book by Megan Miranda one of my faves!
The other day I was looking around my neighborhood wondering why there weren't more murder mysteries that took place in similar spaces. I've read murder mysteries that take place in small English villages, which is close, but not quite the quintessential American neighborhood. So I was very excited to dive into Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda.
Harper's former housemate Ruby is out from prison after being accused and convicted of murdering a couple on their street. Ruby is brash where Harper is reserved, so when Ruby shows up at Harper's house as though she's returning from a weekend away, Harper just kind of lets her. The neighbors who accused Ruby of murder are not happy to see her return, restart neighborhood watch and start having meetings about what's going on. And it becomes clear to Harper that Ruby isn't back with the expectation of being welcomed home but with the understanding that she was set up and it's time to get even.
This is a good locked-room type murder mystery that kept me entertained and reading. The characters were, for the most part, well-developed, though there were a few that fell flat. I always think it's odd when an author chooses current trendy names for the characters--I know children named Harper and Ruby but not a lot of twentysomethings--but that's honestly the only negative feedback I have, except a few things related to spoilers, and I wouldn't do that.
I'm so grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this story. Unfortunately, it just didn't do it for me. I think the large cast was too confusing to keep up with. The vibe of the town was great, and the premise was great, but overall just ended up being really choppy and not as engaging as I'd hoped. This was my first Megan Miranda novel, and I've heard fantastic things about her, so I look forward to trying some of her other books.
Great premise, but this book didn’t do it for me.
The characters were unlikeable (and not in a fun way) and felt one-dimensiona. The plot dragged, and the reveal was a letdown. I do love a neighborhood scandal story but I wanted more from this one.
That said: I’ve read a number of positive reviews, so there are things to love about this book — it could be a fun one for the beach/pool.
Great read! Looking forward to reading more by this author! I highly recommend this book and author to all!
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda.
Miranda provides the reader with great characters that are interesting and vividly descriptive. Hollow Edge is a great place to live, but murder and secrets create a trouble atmoshper for this bucolic area.
There are alot of characters to keep track of, but Miranda does a good job keeping the reader engaged. What goes on behind the doors of this quaint village will keep you in suspense till the last page.
Good Book - 3.5 stars.
MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MEGAN MIRANDA.
The prose of this story is ominous. It's incredibly easy to read. The setting was intriguing and the first chapter just sucked you in. Very important for me! The end was a little predictable, but sometimes that's not always a bad thing. It means my mind went where she wanted it to go. I thoroughly loved this so much.
Thank you for my copy of Megan Miranda's Such a Quiet Place- it was a fun thriller that had me hooked until the last page. The setting was beautiful, the characters well defined and the writing was solid. Can't wait to read her other books.
This book was an up and down ride for me. The very beginning was great but then it majorly slowed down. When I got to around the halfway point it got better and was moving forward, then it once again slowed down and became boring. It stayed that way. I also got frustrated with reading the main character’s same thoughts over and over. I liked the suspense but in the end it didn’t lead anywhere exciting. It was just like, “oh, ok”, so it felt like that suspense was for nothing.
True to Megan Miranda's traditional style this slow burn psychological thriller is the perfect read to pick you up out of any kind of reading slump. What I love about Miranda's storytelling is the way she utilizes female friendships, often portraying two opposites as best friends. I also really enjoyed the way the neighborhood was a big part of the story, the large cast didn't distract from the story.
Hollow’s Edge was Such a Quiet Place in this thriller by Megan Miranda. After the murder of the Truetts, the neighborhood has never been the same. When the convicted killer, Ruby Fletcher, is released from prison after only 14 months, the neighbors reinstate a crime-watch like patrol and tell Ruby’s roommate Harper Nash to send Ruby packing.
An unsuspecting Harper suddenly finds her roommate back in her house after the latter’s conviction was overturned. But the overturned conviction does not reduce Harper’s fear of Ruby as everything seems to point to Ruby’s guilt. Soon Harper is receiving threatening notes, and she becomes determined to get to the root of the murders before someone else is killed. Things are going on in Hollow’s Edge that no one can seem to explain, and everyone becomes a suspect.
The weaknesses in this novel included a lack of development of its characters: one could have easily replaced another as there was nothing differentiating them. Additionally, the convoluted timeline of the original murders only confused the plot.
Megan Miranda has crafted suspenseful novels like The Girl from Widow Hills and The Last House Guest, which was a pick for Reese Witherspoon’s book club. A New Jersey native, Miranda lives in North Carolina with her family.
My review will be posted on Goodreads starting April 20, 2021.
I would like to thank Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review.
Megan Miranda does an excellent job of building suspense while keeping you guessing.
Ruby has been acquitted of a terrible crime, but is she guilty? Harper and the rest of Hollow’s Edge have been uprooted ever since Ruby came back to town upon her release from prison. Gossip is running rampant and then something terrible occurs. Will the truth come out or will the neighbors keep harboring secrets until it’s too late?
I loved Ruby and her character. I felt like she was well-written and perfectly secretive. Harper was a bit annoying at times but she got in well with the rest of the community.
This is a great thriller that will keep the reader guessing until the very end!
If you are familiar with me at all you are well aware that I am a cheap slut date who will auto-request pert near any book that has a house on the cover. When I saw this aerial shot of an entire neighborhood????? #swoon
And then I actually got approved to read the dang thing early! Despite having an absolutely sucktastic review ratio over on the NetGalley. Yay me : )
Per the above, I didn’t bother reading the blurb because – duh – HOUSE COVER. I just assumed it would feature one of my other favorite things. I’m telling you, it’s probably a good thing that (1) I dislike human interaction so much and (2) there are fairly stringent local ordinances regarding being a peeping creeper because I looooooooove looking into fictional people’s houses almost to an unhealthy extent. This book featured not only neighbors living in the same quiet little cul-de-sac-y community, but also ones who all worked together at the local college.
So real briefly, the story here is about the Hollow’s Edge subdivision and the people who reside there. A year and a half ago Ruby was convicted of the murder of two of the residents. Due to a mistrial she’s now out of jail and back in the ‘hood and making everyone uncomfortable with her presence. And then at the halfway mark things took a twist and . . . .
That’s all you get. If you aren’t a fan of murder mysteries or neighborhood shenanigans you should probably avoid this like the plague. If you are like me and really dug All the Missing Girls only to find Miranda’s other releases to not be quite up to snuff, rest assured that she’s back with a good ‘un this go around.

The title refers to Hollow’s Edge, a small neighborhood where everyone knows each other and gets along. Many of the residents work at the nearby college. Close relationships have been formed by the neighbors. So when neighbors Brandon and Fiona Truett are found dead in their home, everyone in Hollow’s Edge is afraid.
Then the evidence pointed toward Ruby, the roommate of Harper, an original neighbor. The other neighbors assumed she was guilty. There was a trial, Ruby was convicted and sent to prison. Now it is 14 months later and Ruby is out of jail. Her conviction has been overturned and she returns to Harper’s home intent on finding the real killers.
The neighbors are upset as they still believe that Ruby did kill the couple. They fear for their own lives and even set up a neighborhood watch where one neighbor patrols the street after dark.
Harper is conflicted after she discovers that Ruby was complicit in the breakup between Harper and her fiancé. She is not sure that Ruby committed the murders but is also upset with Ruby’s current behavior.
Then the neighborhood 4th of July party at the local pool brings out all the neighbors including Ruby. Several neighbors distance themselves from Ruby and leave the party early. Once the party ends, it is discovered that Ruby has been poisoned and is dead.
So Harper tries to solve the mystery of who killed the Truetts and who killed Ruby.
This book starts slowly but soon becomes a page turner. It is very hard to predict the ending as there are twists and turn throughout the book. I enjoyed this book as well as

I really enjoyed this one! This book was interesting all the way through and kept me guessing the entire time. There are a lot of characters in this book, which can sometimes be confusing, but I found it easy to keep them straight and keep up with their storylines. I really liked that a neighborhood map was included in the beginning of this book and found myself referencing back to it a couple times throughout the book. This was my 2nd Megan Miranda novel and I am definitely a fan and will be reading more!
Thank you Simon & Schuster and Net Galley for the ARC in return for my honest review!
I liked this. Miranda has a rhythm to her thrillers, and it take me a while to fall into that rhythm. But once I do, I can't put her books down. They often start a little slow (but never boring), and then pick up about 20-30% in, when they become pretty irresistible.
This one has a great twist about 2/3 through that kept me up late rushing to the finish.
