I automatically read everything that Megan Miranda writes, however this book was one of my least favorites of hers. I thought the first half of the book was really slow and I didn't care about the characters.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
I enjoyed this new one by Megan Miranda. I've been a fan of her work over the last several years and she always manages to keep me interested in each of her stories. I'd consider this more of a suspense than a thriller. It was a quick read. I definitely think readers will gobble this one up around the pool or beach this summer.
I was hooked from the first page. The characters were easy to keep track of and the storyline flowed really well. I thought the premise was creative and was satisfied with the ending. This is an easy read for anyone who loves suspense.
Ahhhhhhh this was just such a wonderful book and I just thoroughly enjoyed myself. I didn’t want to put this book down. I just fell in love with this wonderful story and it’s wonderful characters. I will most definitely be reading more stories from this wonderful author.
I really wanted to like this one a lot more than what I did. I felt that from the go that the story just seemed to lack urgency or any really fear. The deaths were a complete mess and had holes as well. I felt that the characters just fell flat for me, especially Harper and Ruby. Harper just comes off as seeming oblivious to everything and detached. The only part remotely interesting was the he said, she said narrative. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.
Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for the copy of this arc! I was so excited to get approved for this one as I am a Miranda fan! However, this was a slow burn thriller which took me a couple times to get into and read more as a domestic mystery than anything. Luckily, the twists and turns kept me guessing until the last page and I enjoyed the ending. Miranda is able to write the mystery, the twists, the setting, and the character development so perfectly. This will make for the perfect summer thriller and I can't wait to recommend for a beach read!!
This was a 3.5 star read for me, but I am rounding up to 4 because it was a quick and fun read. I don't normally read thrillers, and this book reminded me that I do enjoy the mystery and I should mix in one into my reading a bit more often.
This particular thriller takes place in a quiet, seemingly safe small neighborhood called Hollow's Edge. I loved the description of the setting and the role that it played in the mystery. I also found the map in the front of the book helpful in remembering who lives where, as this definitely plays into trying to solve the crime that has terrified this quaint little neighborhood. One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the idea that we all make assumptions about others that are often not based in reality at all. This book was a good reminder to check those assumptions and realize that we usually don't have the whole story about people's private lives. I enjoyed being taken on the ride of seeing other people through the eyes of the narrator, Harper, and watching as she unravels the mystery of what has happened in Hollow's Edge.
I found the end of some of the chapters to be a bit repetitive with Harper coming back to the same questions again and again. I also did start to figure out what the twist was going to be before Harper fully realizes it. But, these things did not take away from my enjoyment of the book. This is a fun story to get caught up in! Thank you to Net Galley, Simon and Schuster, and Megan Miranda for the advanced reader copy.
Megan Miranda knocked it out of the park again. Once again I finished her book in under 24 hours. I think that I have done that for every single one of her books. If you want a thriller that will keep your attention and not let you put it down then this is it!
The story of a quiet and safe neighborhood that is rocked by the death of two of its own in their own house. When a neighborhood resident is accused and put away for their murder the neighborhood seems to sigh with relief. But, when she is released because more evidence has come to light the neighbors will begin to see what they have been hiding from each other. What will happen when the accused turns up dead and no one seems to know what happened?! This book will have you on the edge of your seat! I loved every second of it!
I requested this novel without paying attention to who wrote it. If I had paid attention, I might not have requested it. I’ve read most of Miranda’s other thrillers and I was not a huge fan of any of them. However, this one far exceeded any of my expectations.
This book is so much more than a thriller. It’s a nuanced look at how we deal with the people who live in closest proximity to us. Our neighbors. These neighbors make assumptions about one another and ultimately three people end up dead.
This book kept me hanging on.. in a good way. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Such a Quiet Place is a classic mystery full of drama and suspense! The beginning of the book shows a neighborhood map of where each of the characters lives in relation to each other, and we learn more as we are introduced to these neighbors how such details are important parts to the book's central drama.
Ruby has returned to Hollow's Edge after being in jail for the murders of a neighbor couple. How could she so brazenly come back to a place where the other residents helped put her in prison because they believed she committed the murders? Ruby re-inserts herself into Harper Nash's life and home, which is who she was staying with at the time the Truett couple was killed. Harper isn't sure that Ruby committed the crime, but she also isn't convinced of her innocence. Still, Harper doesn't protest or deter Ruby from coming back to stay at the house with her, which was a little shocking to me. But Harper feels like Ruby has nowhere else to go and nobody else to turn to, so she returns to her role of caring like Ruby in a sisterly way.
Hollow's Edge is thrust back into the drama upon Ruby's return. Throughout the book, we read neighborhood social media page updates that clue us in to the state of mind of the residents and their continued concerns about their safety. We learn a lot about how we can't fully trust the motives of these neighbors, as their fear and anger take over and have a transformative effect upon their actions. Are they helping to keep their community safe, or are their tainted emotions having an ill effect upon their group as a whole?
The clues that came out were interesting, and it was compelling to learn how things tied together at the end of the book. I didn't have it all figured out before the answers were revealed!
It was a good read. Some characters such as Ruby are more engaging than others. The story was slow from the beginning until the middle. I guess it is to build suspense; however, the story and conversations more or less went in a circle instead of building up the storyline. The ending was predictable, but there are some twists to the ending that I could not foresee. I like Megan Miranda's other books better.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have been a fan of Megan Miranda since I picked up All the Missing Girls one day randomly from Target when it caught my eye in the book section. I was extremely excited when I was approved for this ARC.
Her new book, Such a Quiet Place is a good thriller, It was a slow burn, and to be honest, I had to re-start reading it 3 times before I got into it. as the first two pages did not suck me in right away so i put it down. When I had more time, I sat down and made myself keep going and I am very glad I did. I had guesses allthrough the book and loved the twist at the end.
Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for this advanced copy
A GREAT read! I could not put this one DOWN!
The perfect little community where you know all your neighbors, right? Guess again!
I had some suspicions about "who done it" about 3/4 of the way through, but that did not detract from my desire to keep going. Enjoyable characters, great writing style incorporating the community message board and well done twists through the end. I am a new Megan Miranda fan and will be reading more!
Thank you for the ARC!!
Such A Quiet Place was a good domestic thriller, with a nice slow burn, and plenty of not-so-likable characters to keep you guessing right up until the very end.
Hollow’s Edge is small neighborhood like town. Quiet and idyllic- the majority of the residents employed at the nearby university lends a family atmosphere. This peace is shattered following the double murder of married residents. The perpetrator, the local dog walker is now safely behind bars.
Until now. Ruby Fletcher is declared innocent and released without fanfare. She reports directly back to the neighborhood and takes up residence with her old housemate Harper Nash. Harper is too nice, too quiet and too non confrontational to address the issues Ruby brings. The electronic community bulletin board however, is a hive of activity.
The heightened collective anxiety causes paranoia and fear. Community members are sure that a murderer has returned to Hollow's Edge. But what if they are wrong?
This was an enjoyable read. I would have preferred the characters to be a bit more complicated and likeable. I was surprised by the ending which is always a plus!
This was a FAST read, I read it during two flights! I love reading a good thriller on a plane and this didn’t disappoint. It was only my second Megan Miranda read but I know I have more in my future.
Hollow’s Edge was such a quite place. Until two people in the neighborhood are killed and the person convicted of their murder was living next door. Of course nothing would ever be the same in the community, but then Ruby, the convicted killer, returns. Through the eyes of Ruby’s closest friend and Hollow’s Edge resident, Harper, we watch the truth come out and a community fall apart.
The mystery in this one was SO fun to solve. It reminded me a lot of All the Missing Girls, but with a better timeline! I love a thriller that shifts your suspicions from character to character and this one definitely did. While I didn’t love the final reveal, mostly because I was wrong lol, this was so fast paced that it was worth it.
Liked:
-Tight knit neighborhood setting
-Clues were interesting & unique
-Quick read
-Neighborhood message board
Disliked:
-Final twist/reveal
-LOTS of characters
Reading Megan Miranda’s backlist is definitely a goal of mine now. All the Missing Girls was enjoyable despite the backwards timeline and this one had such a fun setting & mystery!
Wow! Such a great read. This one grabs you from the very first page and keeps you in suspense until the very end. So many characters that blend perfectly together into the story. Excellent!
In Megan Miranda’s latest novel, Such a Quiet Place, a small town neighborhood is shook up when two of their neighbors are found murdered in their house. What was once a quiet and friendly community supporting the local collage turns into a neighborhood where no one can trust each other. One of their neighbors, Ruby Fletcher, ends up arrested for the murder. However, when her conviction is overturns she returns to the neighborhood she used to live in. Her old roommate is scared and questions why Ruby would want to return to a place where everyone believes she is a murderer. Ruby swears her innocence and sets out to discover what really happened the night of the murder. As clues slowly unravel, she discovers some neighbors were lying about the events of that night.
This book is less of a thriller than most of Miranda’s novels and more of a slow burn mystery. It took me a long time to get into this once. The beginning through the middle were pretty slow. There were too many characters that it was hard to keep them straight and none were particularly remarkable. However, there is a twist toward the second third of the book that I was not expecting and the book really picks up from there. I did not expect the ending at all. I love murder mysteries is small towns so I loved the setting of this one. I just wish I was more invested in the characters and storyline itself and that it hooked me earlier in the book.
Overall, this was a 3 star read for me! I would like to thank Netgalley, Simon & Schuster, and Megan Miranda for a advanced reader copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. I definitely look forward to reading more from Megan Miranda as I have loved some of her previous books.
I’ve read several Megan Miranda books. Some I’ve liked, some not so much. This one is a”not so much.” Very slow. The characters weren’t particularly likeable, nor very well fleshed out. I’m sorry to give a poor review, but I’m also glad I’m done reading this book.
Thanks NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.
I didn't get to finish this in time before it expired on Netgalley. But it didn't grab my attentions which was why I kept putting off reading it.
